buddy read w Hugo

i have absolute no care about anything as i already forgot what happened. i was just so invested in John and Arthur’s story. even so, i didn’t remember what was going on that makes them hate each other at first but the relationship progress wasn’t that bad. they had their push and pulls, but wasn’t catchy makes me want to hold onto it. i also think that John shouldn’t push everything to happen between them because Arthur was struggling a lot. and when someone says he’s not ready for something big, let them 🤷🏻‍♀️ idk, if they actually had chemistry, it would be cute. so that makes me feel that John was being pushy and i hate that. and when John established his love for Arthur, i can’t feel it. what did Arthur and John ever do that make me believe that they are in love? and what makes John loves Arthur? it’s either Arthur’s cock or nothing.

and there was also not much to talk about with Hugo as it was meh :( but still, it kept me going. but anyway, thanks Hugo for reading this with me, this historical week has been a little bad for me. hope next week is better! (pray tell we got good books next time)

John Dandie is a solicitor who will do just about anything for his friends and clients. When his friend’s search for his kidnapped son leads to New York, John follows to help, but recovering the child would be a lot easier without the complication of having Detective Arthur Gleason along.

Arthur has been toying with John for months now, enjoying the cat and mouse game they’ve casually engaged in during the search, both as enemies and as allies. Arthur has been detached but determined in his pursuit and John has managed to resist his efforts, despite their attraction. But when Arthur must confront the pain of his past while they’re in New York, John must decide just what he’s willing to give up for a chance at a more satisfying relationship than he’s ever had.

I have to say, after all the anticipation of this book, the final joining of Arthur and John was rather anticlimactic for me. I expected a lot more passion and more exploration of the dominant side of Arthur’s character along with John’s need to cede control and that was never fully developed here like I expected. The emotional upheaval here was strong for both characters, especially Arthur, but it did get just a bit repetitive after awhile and it sometimes seemed that Arthur and John had the same argument/discussion multiple times. Nonetheless, I still enjoyed the story and the satisfaction of finally seeing Blake reunited with his son, I just wanted a bit more from John and Arthur somehow.

I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

The tenth & final book in this awesome series, it could be read on its own but the attraction between John & Arthur has been building since their first meeting & I for one have been impatiently awaiting this book to see where it would lead, was I disappointed? A definite no! A very well written totally riveting, enthralling read which once started I couldn't put it down. I also loved how everything was tied up. Wonderful characters, a fast paced plot that didn’t falter & that attraction between John & Arthur WOW. I’m sad to see this series finish but it definitely finished on a high.
My honest review is for a special copy I voluntarily read

A triumphant end to Blake's pursuit of his abducted son, and a revelation for John Dandie. Several problems are resolved in this story, both personal, historical, and professional, with loose ends tied together. An excellent tale, with a number of characters owning up to hidden secrets.

John and Arthur, The Brotherhood finale, book 10

Book 10 of The Brotherhood series has the group closing in on Blake’s son, Alan. We have seen both John and Arthur in previous books, and Arthur has always been suggestive of a relationship with solicitor, John Dandie. As much as John denied a spark between the two, he came to realize he wanted to get together with private investigator, Arthur, and not just a hookup, but a business collaboration, and lifetime partners. About this time, Arthur’s past jumps in between the two men resulting in Arthur pulling away from John. As this occurs, Alan has been found in Blake’s soon to be ex-in-laws, Alan’s grandparents’ summer home on Long Island. Alan is ecstatic to be reunited with his father. The rest of the book is concerned with John trying to help Arthur move on from his past and resolving the issues between the two men. We also see that Alan’s grandmother is overly attached to the boy and doesn’t want to let him go back to England to rejoin his sisters. This book is an m/m romance where Arthur is into BDSM, pain and pleasure, and is the dominant partner. John is new to the practices but realizes he thoroughly enjoys the encounters and likes giving up control since in his day to day living he is concerned with every move he makes. The heat level is extra spicy! These two opposites are an excellent paring which has been building for the last few books. I enjoyed this final installment of the Brotherhood series. I was definitely glad Blake was reunited with his son, finally, but that story arc did move a little too slowly and ended a little too abruptly. Having a reunion with the Brotherhood characters and children in England would have been the icing on the cake. Otherwise, job well done, Merry Farmer, for creating this world and these characters set in Victorian England.

“We are products of our past, but we don’t have to be prisoners of it.” ~ Rick Warren

After months of chasing Lady Selby, of ‘Just a Little Rivalry’ by Merry Farmer, so he could get his son back, John Dandie and his friends’ pursuit is finally nearing the end.

Arthur Gleason has been pursuing John Dandie for a while now. He has spent months flirting and making indecent proposals, but John has resisted. However, the trip to America gives Arthur the perfect opportunity to work on breaking down John’s walls and, hopefully, get him into bed. However, Arthur is not interested in an emotional attachment, no matter how drawn Arthur is to John. Arthur’s past lover committed suicide and Arthur held himself responsible for his death and swore to never fall in love again. When John’s behavior toward him changes, Arthur isn’t sure what to do. He isn’t sure how to handle the “softer” feelings he has for John, so Arthur does what he has always done – he is nastier than ever, mistreating John in bed, hoping it will push him away. The problem is, their encounter backfires. Instead of the disgusted reaction Arthur expects, it lights a fire in John that is insatiable.

John finds Arthur’s behavior distasteful but acknowledges that there is chemistry between them. When working together, John begrudgingly admits that they make an excellent team. They have followed many clues presented to them and, finally, have tracked down Lady Selby and Blake’s son, and his return to his father seems inevitable. On this trip, John sees a different side of Arthur, one that intrigues him. He realizes that Arthur’s reckless, off-putting behavior is nothing more than a defense mechanism meant to keep others at arm’s length. Once John figures this out, he tries to endear himself to Arthur, which makes Arthur even more belligerent. Finally, John grows tired of Arthur’s push-me-pull-you attitude and does the only thing he can – he walks away.

‘Just a Little Rivalry’ is a superb ending to a complex whirlwind of emotions for the many colorful characters in the series. Although the men and their circumstances vary, one theme prevails: even though forbidden in their day, love found a way. I will miss them all. Thanks, Merry.

Yessssssssss hello bondage my old friend. I am delighted to find you in this series, tastefully and historically done.

So we finally get to John and Arthur, who have been sniping at each other in the back of probably four other books by this point. I liked how Farmer wove in Arthur's time in the Navy and the global connections he got out of that, in the sense that it really was true that the British Empire covered the world and we sometimes forget that historical British tales must be far more aware of the sheer size of the globe for it. I'm not wild about some of the ways Japanese culture is presented through that narrow lens of Arthur's experience. I am wild, however, about how John and Arthur batter each other apart--somewhat literally--as they begin to recognize that neither of them are vanilla and that's okay. Arthur's deep fear of how *real* John is makes sense; there's a fabulous quote on p. 101 that Arthur "was the man who found people so he didn't have to go in search of himself." Both of them, even within the societies that allow them to be themselves, have been living with masks and watching them realize that was fascinating.

Very glad to see the end of the Lord Selby arc and how complicated and ridiculous that was. Still want to drop kick Annamarie. It was so good to see Selby getting to be the good dad he is, though, especially in light of how many judgments people were making about him just because of his love for Niall.

Superb Ending

OK, let's get this out of the way: This denouement to a brilliant series is full of back and forth surprises, shocks and sometimes totally illogical developments. However, it has so much credibility because Merry Farmer has done her homework and brings use New York City and Long Island around the turn of the 20th Century perfectly.

Except.

The only question I would have is that most of the story takes place in the Long Island town of Peconic, which does not exist but a bay and river of the same name defines the split of the island's far eastern fork. The problem is that the town of Peconic is supposedly located on Long Island sound, which is the northern part, and I would assume that Ms. Farmer's location is basically the western end of what is northern fork.

So, I got that out of my system.

Now to the tale which gives us the mysteriously discreet but extremely lonely John Dandie (on the cover), and no doubt off the page in that pose is Arthur Gleason. He is the gruff private detective who has joined Dandie on his excursion to America to finally track down and rescue the Duke of Selby's young son from the clutches of his ditzy mother and very rich grandparents.

That plot line is filled with all sorts of surprises and logistical issues (as always in this series) but it's the dynamic created by John and Arthur that weaves another spell that moves the whole story into a tightly wound bundle and tosses it out there for the reader to unravel.

In the end this is an exceptionally satisfying conclusion to a brilliant series and it's also a sweetly set up scenario for another series, "The Slippery Slope" which is New York City's chance to shine.

Bravo!

John and Arthur

John Daniel has finally arrived in America to find Blake's son Alan. Working reluctantly together John and Arthur have been frienemies since they have known each other, and being in a foreign country, Arthur's ups the flirting. In the Slippery Slope John recognises a face from his past. Chasing him, he disappears. John and Arthur discover Alan's whereabouts....

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story! There's so much drama, intrigues, mystery, revenge, kidnapping, reunions, villians, and heroes. The characters are interesting, complex, realistic, have depth, and can't help but feel empathy for them. The secondary characters have predominantly featured in the series and they finally get their happy ending! The story is well written, fast paced and compelling to read. Written from dual POV gain insight into the thoughts, feelings, and emotions of John and Arthur. There's an HEA!

This is so bittersweet for me. This is the end of this particular series but not the end of our friends. If you've not started The Brotherhood I highly recommend you do. It will not disappoint. Here we have Solicitor John Dandie and Detective Arthur Gleason. They started on opposite sides but are now working together to help the Duke of Selby find and bring home his son. These two men have had electricity passing between them from the first meet. They butt heads but when they work together it's grand. Arthur just took my heart. I already loved John. Put them together and I was just giddy happy. Learning Arthur's past will tug at your heart strings. See what happens when the REALLY work together. You can't miss the conclusion to the chase for Blake's son. This was the ending we've been waiting for and Merry did not disappoint. I highly recommend this book and the series. Merry's writing is pure joy with a lot of zizzle.

Well, Lord Selby’s search and recovery has finally ended. His son has been returned to him in such a fashion that makes you feel so good. The main story in this book is John and Arthur and two more different people you will never meet. Arthur reminds of Everett. I loved that through this series Arthur and John were at loggerheads not only with John being a solicitor and Arthur a detective, but on a personal level. Merry knows how to turn a seemingly lightweight situation into hardcore pain to the heart. I never saw that coming with Arthur. Merry torments him throughout most of the story. It is heartbreaking. She also lets John be the one to calm him down and show him caring and love. I thought this was a great ending to the Brotherhood (for now).

This conclusion to the Brotherhood series was a disappointment. I love John Dandie, but Arthur Gleason has been less and less of interest. He’s a bit too cruel, though we learn why in this book.

They have some chemistry, but this is outside Farmer’s usual style in terms of sex scenes, not my thing.

I also didn’t like the fact that Blake and Niall stayed with his in-laws so his son could “visit”, that made no sense, and all along everyone kept saying they didn’t trust little Alan’s grandmother, yet nothing was done.

The best part was the investigation of Mr. Stone, a potential business partner for Mr. Cannon, with the dinner scene and John explaining the differences between barristers and solicitors being a highlight.

Too bad, the series itself is solid, and the author writes romance and humour well.

A Heart racing conclusion to a wonderful series

What a delicious and past paced story! What can happen on a ship crossing the Atlantic? Well if it can happen it does. What can happen when a Duke wants his son, who has been taken by his wife from London to New York?. Can a Duke divorce? Can he gain custody of his son and heir?
Can a grandmother get custody when the boy's mother does not want him?
And then there is the side story!
Everything moves quickly. Everyone finds their true love.
I am left wanting more, that's for sure.
Anyone who has read this series will want to read this wonderful conclusion. Get it now!

This being the last book in the Brotherhood, the Duke of Selby has found his son and plans to return to England with him but there is conflict that delays the reunion. John and Arthur’s relationship is like the waves on the ocean, full of highs and lows and eventually smooth waters. The story is full of people struggling to attain their ultimate goal. It is entertaining with lots of details that makes for a great read.

Meh.

Arthur didn't grovel enough, John was too forgiving and approaching doormat territory and considering what's happened throughout the series and their supposed jobs, how none of them didn't at least suspect the Mrs Canon wouldn't at least attempt something was ridiculous.

I had high hopes for John and Arthur but I was disappointed.

This was excellent. I knew I loved Gleason. The angst and the push-and-pull between Arthur and John was just perfection. I love their complicated personalities and the compromises they have to make with themselves and each other. What a great end to a great series. I'm going to miss Darlington Gardens and The Brotherhood.

Love in a Different Way

Arthur and John have a very different kind of love.
Mystery and intrigue make up a very different kind of story.
Merry Farmer writes a good story even if it is M/M.

Thinking of something out of the ordinary for people today, then transition it to the age of the late 1900's, that's what you have to think of reading the fabulous new Brotherhood edition.

Some of the previous issues are now coming to a head, but new intrigue is starting.

Believe me you want to read the newest edition not only to see what happens now, but also to you want to see what's happening next!!!

Enjoy the read, you'll never be disappointed!!! Saying anything more would just spoil your appetite, so I shall leave you to dive into the novel.

Just a little rivalry, and a whole lot of love. Ms Farmer has knocked it out of the park on this one. Not only has the ongoing story throughout the Brotherhood series been wrapped up, but we also see the ongoing tumultuous relationship between Solicitor John Dandie and Detective Arthur Gleason reach the fireworks we were hoping for. I'm not sure I could recommend this one as a standalone, because of the previous mentioned ongoing stories, so do yourself a favour and read the series. Can't recommend enough.
