Plot: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
In this book we follow a private investigator, born with psychic abilities, named Rylee “Scotty” as she takes on a pro-bono case to find a missing college aged girl. Our other POV is the lead detective on that case, a lone wolf type, Calum. They’re paths inevitably diverge as Rylee realizes the girl she has been looking for may be the next victim of a serial killer, dubbed “The Toy Maker”. She must find this girl, while keeping her abilities a secret.
What I Loved:
I am a sucker for police procedural stories where one of the case-crackers has some sort of supernatural ability to help the cases along (think the tv shows iZombie of Lucifer). So this plot/storyline was definitely interesting to me, and I really enjoyed this unique brand of ability that Scotty possesses. The idea of a serial killer recreating classic children’s toys was pretty cool too.
What I Didn’t Love:
For such a short/quick read there was a lot of repetitiveness in this book. Sentences and points repeated 2-3 times within a page, or facts in the case repeated 5 times as if I would have forgotten after 2 pages. If this book was cut down to no repetition, I’d say we’d lose a fair chunk and I could’ve read this in an hour.
Writing: ⭐⭐
I wasn’t much of a fan of this writing style. It didn’t keep me interested, was really repetitive, and (REMINDER THIS WAS AN ARC) had too many typos/errors, and sentences that felt strange. It was hard to immerse myself in the story when I kept getting stopped by strange sentences or errors that I’d have to reread/decipher to make sense of. Also, (disclaimer: I love me some smut reading) the random smutty alleyway scene felt very out of place and probably would’ve been better as hinted at versus the reader getting the whole play-by-play.
Characters: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
I appreciate that our FMC is very capable. She knows her powers, uses them well, and is strong and able to take care of herself. I appreciate that we didn’t have to have her rescued in this story. Cal is your typical brooding loan wolf, with a sad backstory. This book felt like a buildup to a series so I’m sure his backstory will be touched on at some point, as well as a budding relationship between the two.
