Stalker by Gemma Rogers is a well-written and gritty psychological thriller. The story takes place in London and starts with our protagonist Eve Harding being assaulted and raped while walking to a train station. The police are unable to find her attacker so Eve seeks to find him herself and get her revenge.

This is one of those books where it is hard to know who is the cat and who is the mouse. The atmosphere is palpable. The emotions seem real with hurt, anger, frustration, a feeling of helplessness, and then a need for retribution.

The novel does skip backward and forward in time and personally, I would have liked a straight timeline, but Rogers did a great job with this format as well as switching between Eve, the attacker, and the police at various times. The chapters are well labeled so the reader does not have to guess as to when events are occurring.

Does Eve find her assailant? Does she get her revenge? Or does the attacker determine who she is and come after her again? Will Eve find happiness, prison or death?

I highly recommend this book to those that enjoy psychological thrillers, but bear in mind that the attack is depicted in strong detail. I believe this is an author to watch and I look forward to her next book.

Many thanks to Boldwood Books, Gemma Rogers and Net Galley for a digital ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review. Opinions are mine alone and are not biased in any way.

I'm going to be honest I almost gave up on this one but I'm glad I stuck it out.

The reason I almost stop was just because, everything in the book was just so dark one struggle after another, I prefer a mix of both up's and downs in dark books or it can just get to depressing.

That being said it ended up being OK and I thought the ending was not completely obvious which I did like.

Happy Reading 📚📗📗📙📒📙📚📗📘📕📔📖📙📚📒📓📘📗📖

The background is a brutal crime, but the book is a psychological thriller. There is a reasonably interesting cat & mouse game between the criminal & the victim. The pace is very slow though and beyond a point there is not much to look forward to in the story.

Eve Harding is raped on the way to the station. No DNA evidence is available and the police reach a dead end in the investigation. Eve shares a flat with Ben (who is not a romantic partner), who is very supportive. The company Eve works at is to merge with another and some layoffs seem eminent. Eve in any case, is not in a mental state to work and decides to take a severance package. Eve is determined to find the person who assaulted her and has some ideas on how to pursue the hunt.

The story is told in two timelines which are not too far apart in time periods. This is in fact a story where a linear timeline would have worked better according to me. Other than the pace being slow, there is hardly anything to look forward to in the last ~30% or so. Eve’s pursuit of her attacker while interesting from a psychological standpoint is simplistic, unrealistic and predictable. The writing is good and I do hope to read more of Gemma Rogers books.

I listened to the audiobook and the narration by Georgia Maguire was good.

This story is about Eve, a woman who was brutally assaulted. She was raped in road daylight when she was on route to meet a friend. She vows to get revenge on the man who assaulted her. The police can't find no trace of him. She had went in the shower before contacting them. Eve decides to start her own investigation. She wants him caught before he wrecks anyone else's life.

*WARNING* The rape scene is very graphic!

This is quite an enjoyable read ut the subject matter won't be for everyone. Emotions are high with anger and frustration. The chapters kept jumping from character to different character with nothing obvious to tell us we were reading about someone else. Does she find her assailant? You will need to read the book to find out. Over all, a decent read.

I would like to thank Netgalley, Boldwood Books and the author Gemma Rogers for my ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Well, this story started and continued and then it ended. There was a kind-of red herring and then a non-twist at the end. I was expecting something surprising but nothing happened to make me say "holy moly!!", instead it was more "okay, that happened just as it was laid out to happen".

I guess I had greater expectations.

Also, I listened to the audiobook. The narrator is a good narrator, but not a great voice actor. Most of the female voices sounded exactly the same, so it was difficult to keep track of which character was speaking.

Trigger warning: graphic rape scene at the beginning of the book. I did like the revenge plot, but it was not a "who's stalking who" story as there was only one stalker.

Anyway, it was fine but a bit predictable. I wouldn't recommend it. I don't agree that it's for fans of Caroline Kepnes' "You", which I thought was innovative and unputdownable.

This being my final book of the authors to read for now, as am then’up to date’ on her work,I pretty much knew I was in for a good read
What I didn’t know was what a powerful and harshly realistic read it would be…
There are trigger points of rape and sexual assault and the victim recollecting this and these events are written disturbingly but shows, as the author intended, the horror and evil this act brings to the victim and how it then affects their life and actions
Got to say to equal it out a bit the book is peppered with dry humour and also talk of food, as this authors books always are,it gives it a bit of normality of life throughout which I think works really well
All is not as you might think at the beginning of the book though, let’s say never presume and will leave it there
As said a powerful emotive and striking read that will, if like me, affect you as reading it

*Dangerous Liaisons*

‼️Trigger Warning Violence against Women‼️

This book had an intense feeling throughout, it is told over 2 timelines via Eve with a few pov’s from the culprit.

This is a story about Eve who was out taking a walk through the park at 8am on the way to meet her friend Jane. It is broad daylight but she is grabbed and attacked from behind which leaves her in a daze, paralysed with fear. All thoughts of meeting her friend disappears when she goes home and takes a bath…

She calls the police but she has no faith in them. With support from Ben her lodger he coaxes her to start living. He takes her to his gym and she slowly builds up her confidence. With her newfound strength she is on a mission to exact her revenge.

Her plan is bold but has she really thought it through? She is armed with a new look and contact lenses to change her appearance, when the crucial time comes to exact her revenge, will she live to tell the tale and who is playing who?

This is great debut novel by Gemma Rogers.

Eve Harding, early one morning, is brutally assaulted both physically and sexually. This is every woman's worst nightmare.

WARNING: This may be a trigger for some women as the rape scene is graphically described.

She makes some mistakes along the way ... she finds her way home afterwards where she bathes trying to get his touch, his smell gone. Eventually she does call the police, but she can't identify the man. He was dressed all in black and wore a mask. Police have nothing to go on and no one is arrested.

Eve wants justice ... she wants revenge ... all on her own terms. And so starts her own investigation.

In this game of cat and mouse.. who's stalking who? How far does one go to seek justice?

This gripping fictional tale bounces back and forth in time... rotating between the attacker, the police, and Eve herself. There are plenty of twists and turns to keep the plot moving at a fast pace.

Many thanks to the author / Boldwood Books / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

During the time of lockdown i thought it would be a brilliant idea to start a little book club with me my Mum & my sister, we all love books but have vastly different tastes when it comes to our literary choices. This was my Mum's first choice for us to read..

Here's our ratings...
My rating 3.5 Stars
Leonie (sister) 5 Stars
Elaine (Mum) 5 Stars

As i have said i read this as part of our little 'Book Besties' book club so it isn't something i would usually navigate towards however i did find myself enjoying Stalker when i picked it up i read & listened to it via Scribd.

Stalker is the story of Eve Harding, one day when going to meet her friend she is raped in broad daylight, the rape scene is pretty graphic and happens early in in the story, obviously this is a story about someone who has been raped and the events that take place after that so if sexual assault is a potential trigger for you i would avoid this book completely.

Eve has been raped and the aftermath of her sexual assault puts her on a destructive and obsessive path, if the police can't catch her rapist she will. The Stalked becomes the Stalker as Eve's world becomes consumed with finding her rapist and stopping him from hurting anyone else, the police are getting no where and Eve wants vengeance and takes justice into her own hands.

This book is full of clever little twists and turns so i won't be going into the plot in too much depth as i would like to keep this review spoiler free. Rogers has an easy and enjoyable writing style which made reading this an enjoyable and fast paced read.

Though i have only rated this a 3.5stars this is in no way a bad review, i enjoyed the book but it just wasn't something i usually enjoy so though i did enjoy stepping out of my comfort zone it wasn't a five star read for me, however as you can see my mum and sister both rated it five stars so to someone who enjoys this type of genre i think you would thoroughly enjoy this fast paced and clever read.

Quite a breath taking read in some ways. My first book by this author, I was taken in by the swift pace of the story.

Eve was raped, but she had washed away the evidence before calling the cops. Hence the cops were helpless. Frustrated, she decided to catch her rapist.

A book which was thrilling in its cat and mouse game. The whole atmosphere was tense, I was gasping at different points in the story. My heart seeked vengeance and nothing could make me stop reading.

Emotions were plentiful, some made me feel helpless. The attack on Eve was pretty graphic, but the need for revenge which it evoked in me was quite momentous.

An emotional read.

In her debut novel Gemma Rogers plays a cat and mouse game of who is stalking who:

Eve Harding is walking to meet a friend when her world is completely destroyed when she is grabbed and violently sexually assaulted. Her world completely changes, how she sees herself, her body, everyone around her as well as the places she is familiar going. She wants her assaulter found and punished, but he has eluded the police. Then Eve comes up with a plan, she will not stand by and let this man destroy another woman's life. Eve now has a new mission in life, try to find the main who assaulted her and make him pay.

This was really impressive for a debut novel, I felt that Rogers laid out the story she wanted to tell really well minus at the beginning when I found the time jumps a little bit confusing as they are fairly close together. I wish she would have used titles like before and after or 6 months before or 6 month after. However, I do like books that tell the story where the time frames get closer and closer together, which Rogers does here. This also heightened the suspense throughout the book as you begin to wonder how did Eve after everything end up in the jail cell?

I think that Rogers did a great job in not romanticizing rape in any way, from the rape itself to showcasing the fact that there is not only an physical toll that the victim can experience but the emotional one as well. Rogers does not sugar coat a thing. Do I think that Eve was maybe outside the norm of "recovering" so fast, sure, but I think that all the other aspects that Rogers presented around sexual assault in this book were glamorized at all that this can be overlooked.

Speaking of Eve her growth within this book is amazing, from devastating and destroying her life to trying to take aspects of it back to hunting down her assaulter, you cannot help but cheer for her all along the way. Eve just seems like such a real person throughout and you really get to know her as majority of the chapters feature her. There are a few chapters from the detective, which were good, rounded out part that side of the story but there were also chapters featuring her assaulter. Normally, I like when an author put the bad guy front and center as you as the reader gets to know them better their motives, but in this case I wish Rogers would have held them back. They heighten some of the suspense as you wait for Eve to find out the information that you as the reader know, but I personally think they gave away too much and would have preferred to be left in the dark.

I know I have put quite a few things in this review that wish were different in the book (and I guess I will add that I was kind of hoping for a more realistic ending) but all that said this was an awesome debut novel I did not want to put the book down, and I highly recommend this book who like psychological suspense reads as well as cat and mouse thriller books. I look forward to reading Rogers next book.

Enjoy!!!

Cari lettori,

Buona lettura!

Author : Gemma Rogers
Stalker
4 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Stalker by Gemma Rogers is a gripping edge-of-your-seat revenge thriller. Right from the starts it grabs my attention. This well written story has good character development and a twisting, dark plot that - though tragic touches on rape and revenge .This book is definitely dark and twisted and not for the faint of heart. The very first chapter starts off with BANG. From there the story does not slow down until the very last word. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough. I had to know just how far Eve would go to protect other women from having to go through what she did and if she would go through with her revenge plan, all while holding my breath. I was so glued to the pages that i tuned out the world and read it in just a few . Sadly this is something that happens everyday in this messed up world we live in. I am looking forward to reading more of her books. Right now this book is free to read on kindle unlimited.
