The A Struggle for Reformation is the most current and comprehensive book on the total history of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ). Furnishing information on the past two centuries of the denomination, Cummins follows the writings of Disciples' history and reformation.
Well-written introduction to the Disciples of Christ. Highly recommended for studying the splits between independents and the DOC. I was looking for an introductory text on our understanding our liberal first cousins, and this book was very helpful and readable.
Good, solid history of the Disciples of Christ. Especially helpful, I thought, in the discussion of the issues leading to the division that occurred in the early to mid 20th century as well as the steps leading up to "restructure" and it's aftermath.
I also appreciated the discussion of the tension inherent in the twin commitments to "restoration" and church unity. Not completely new, but clearly laid out.
this is simply the best comprehensive history of the Disciples that I have read to date. He pulls in much of the more well known histories and adds the Post-restructure histories up to and including Sharon Watkins. It is diverse, evenhanded - recognizing that not everyone sees our history in the same way, and well written.
