Fairy magic has no place in the modern world – or does it?

Ashley Adams doesn’t have time for haters. Already too busy dealing with dead bodies after her stepmother purchased a mortuary, she is ready to put the lid on her judgmental peers and finally bury her high school experience. Falling in love was the last thing on her mind.

Too bad fate had other plans when the local celebrity lands in her life.

Pop sensation Harry James is ordered by the court to attend public school for his senior year or face jail time. He can’t afford any bad press if he wants his summer tour to go ahead. But when he ducks into the mortuary where Ashley works to escape a mob of fans, he wonders if he is chasing the wrong dream.

High school mean girls, a controlling publicist, and scheming stepsisters want to keep Ashley away from Harry. After all, everyone knows the popstar doesn’t belong with the social outcast.

If only they had some fairy magic to help them find their happy ending…

Ashes is a fun and snarky standalone YA romance. If you like captivating characters, emotional twists and turns, Fairies and Cinderella retellings, then you’ll adore MK Harkins’ fast-paced tale.

Contains mild swearing and off-page violence.

MK has always been a voracious reader. After hitting a dry spell of reading material, she decided to write the kind of book she'd like to read.

This resulted in the creation of her debut novel, Intentional. (Award for Best Sweet Romance - eFestival of Words- August 2014)

Unintentional, her second book, is based on the life of one of the characters in Intentional. Unintentional was written as a stand-alone book.

Breaking Braydon, Taking Tiffany, The Reader, The Jack, and Famous by Default have all been released on Amazon.

Ashes, the first book in a new series of modern-day fairy tale retellings, releases in May 2022. (Five more books in the series to follow)

When she's not writing novels, she likes to spend her free time traveling the world, splashing in mud puddles (She lives in Seattle, what can she say?), watching movies and reading (!)

She LOVES to hear from her readers!

Honestly, this book was a DNF for me and that was super unfortunate as I really like retellings. It feels like this wasn't edited so M.K. Harkins wasn't given revisions or anything. I read 5 chapters and it read like how older generations think teenagers speak like very much "Sup friend! I too am a teen that likes teen things" just very cringe and hard to read. But my biggest point would be in chapter 1 when the friend says "He might like an exotic, Polynesian beauty like you" Like uhhh?? Why would you describe anyone like that? I just basically lost interest in everything after that. Also tbh this is basically the movie "Another Cinderella Story" just with changed names and the stepmother has a different occupation. Other than that it's the same retelling except this book does not pull it off.

I am a sucker for fairytale retellings, so I was super excited to see this new Cinderella-based story. Sadly, it didn’t really live up to my admittedly high expectations.

I received an advance review copy from BookSirens for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

I liked the concept of Prince Charming as a bad boy celebrity type and Cinderella as a girl who is the social outcast who works at the funeral home. The story itself was surprising and takes you on many…many twists and turns. It is by no means a believable storyline, but it is entertaining I guess. I think it’s meant for a younger teen audience based on the writing style, but it includes a lot of profanity, drugs, violence and bullying.

The relationship and the plot were very rushed. Plus the characters were not very likable aside from Ash and her best friend (although Ash was portrayed as that perfect misunderstood kind of girl who is actually gorgeous and amazing but nobody sees her true worth). Even Harry and his bestie were kind of misogynistic and gross at times.

The story fell apart for me when the main character was described (both in the narration and by other characters) as an “exotic Polynesian beauty” or constantly by the shape and color of her eyes. It was a little too casual and not called out for being being problematic and racist which made me feel not great at all.

The dialog was kind of cringy at times and the adults in the story were often rather unbelievable. There’s also this magic element that vibes with the fairytale retelling theme, but felt very out of place in this story. I could have done without it.

Overall, not my favorite book that I’ve read this year. Sorry!!

Thank you Netgalley, Victory editing and MK. Harkins for this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Ashes is a retelling of the famous fairytale "Cinderella". I love reading retellings but was not very pleased with this book. At first when I started reading the book it was quite interesting but as the story progressed I felt that it wasn't as good as expected. The book follows the characters Ashley (our Cinderella) and Harry (our prince charming). Ashley at first is seen as a person who has given up entirely on love and can also be said to be cold-hearted because of the circumstances that led her to her current situation. Throughout the book I found her to be dependent a lot on her step family.
Harry on the other hand I found was quite submissive. He is seen as a very weak character who initially cant stand for himself and for the people he cares about. His continuous hot and cold attitude towards the FMC was very disregarding.
The overall plot was good with all the mysteries but I felt there were a lot of loopholes in the story. I feel another reason I may have not liked this book may be because it has a bit of an insta-like trope which I dislike a lot. There weren't many get-to-know instances except the obvious ones. Towards other characters like George, Laura, the step family and Britney I had a lot of mixed feelings and some of the reactions in the book werent apt.
Overall the book is a 3/5 stars read.

This is one of those light reads that go down easy. I finished it in two sittings, and only because I had things to do in between. It is a modern-day retelling of Cinderella with enough twists and turns that keep you guessing how it will end. I mean, we all know how the original story tale ends. But although you generally know that "Cinderella" will get the prince and the evil stepmother and stepsisters will lose out, it was hard to figure out the details, and that kept the story fun for me. Occasionally the dialog had me cringing, but overall, I really enjoyed the banter between the characters and greatly enjoyed karma biting the bad guys in the butt. This ARC includes a preview that suggests that the next book will be about the same characters, which should be a lot of fun. When I first learned about this series, I thought each book in the series was going to be about a different fairy tale retelling, but I really liked the main characters in this story and am looking forward to reading more about them. If you enjoy modern retellings of fairytales, give this quick read a chance!

Ashley Adams is used to being tormented, between the bullies at school and Veronica her step-mother who is determined to drive her away. Ashley has one friend though at school and often puts herself in harms way to protect her. Lately though all the focus at school has been on Pop sensation and bad boy Harry James. Harry will be attending her public school as part of his court appointed plan to get him to straighten up. Ashley plans to keep under the radar, but that quickly changes when Harry ends up needing help hiding from overzealous fans. The connection is instant but what happens when real life creeps in and Harry is forced to chose between what he wants and what he is told to do?

This was a wonderful retelling of Cinderella. Had some twists that made the story a bit more intense. I enjoyed Ashley, for all the hits she has coming her way she keeps her head up and is focused on what she needs to do to get on with her life. Harry grows up a lot in this book, he is often misunderstood and of course always in the spotlight. Definitely would check out the next book in the series.

The playlist in the intro gives you a good indication of how heartbroken and shocked you’ll be throughout the entire book. I swear, the amount of twists and turns just about made me dizzy. The amount of obstacles that Ashley and Harry face are so obvious to point to disaster, but you can’t help but root for them! With the horrifying life that Ashley now is dealing with after the death of her father, you know how much she deserves love and happiness. I love how she stays so strong in the face of Veronica and her step-sisters, but still so sweet with her work and those around her. Laura is such a warm welcome and I love her character. I love how she allows Ashley to be protective of her and how they build each other up to handle the high school dramatics.

It’s hard to write a review for a book like this one without spoiling anything. It’s truly just something you have to read for yourself for you to understand why it’s such a whirlwind!

I received a copy of the ARC file on behalf of the author to review. I’m no stranger to retellings of fairytales so my expectations were high. The story is beautifully written with a fresh and modern take on the characters, whilst retaining the true essence of the story.

From start to finish, the author takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions, with plot twists galore. I simply loved the character development of both the protagonists and antagonists, really pulling you to root for the characters to get what they deserve. The added angle of murder and intrigue is inspired.

This book is probably aimed at lovers of YA (regardless of your actual age) and I’m now looking forward to reading the next part of the story.

I received an ARC copy from the author, having already read a number of modern twists on classic stories.
Ashes does not disappoint.
A modern twist on Cinderella, you are introduced to Ashley, made to work in the funeral parlour of her stepmother and stepsisters, and her Prince of Pop, music star Harry James.
With not just 1 but 2 fairy godmothers (who you don’t know the identity of until the end), Ashley and Harry and thwarted in their journey of true love.
No spoilers here, but this is a book I haven’t been able to put down. I cannot wait for the second book in this series.

Thanks to NetGalley and Victory Editing Co-op for my copy of Ashes.
This book was just what my heart wanted. I love retellings and this one didn't disappoint. It was everything I ever wanted from a Cinderella retelling although I felt an element of the Cinderella story was missing. I did not find myself missing it all that much. I read this book in one sitting and could not take my eyes from it. I loved the twists and turns and the additions that make this book a modern fairy tale. I loved the relationship between Harry and Ashley and how they faced similar issues in their lives and how they faced their personal struggles individually and together. Their relationships with their friends were amazing to see. I can't wait to read the next book in the series. I would love to say more but I don't want to spoiler anything.

👠 The story 👠
Ashley is working in her family’s funeral home when the Prince of Pop comes looking for help.

First of all, I absolutely adore this cover. As soon as I saw it, I wanted to read the book. Another great touch is the fact that there’s a playlist at the beginning of the story (although I couldn’t find it for some reason, but that’s beside the point). The story itself started quite promising, with a fairy godmother(s) meeting! This immediately made me interested to see what would be happening and made me quite excited. Funnily enough, I predicted the entire story after like 2 chapters. Every plot twist, I’m not kidding. Still, I think it was a very enjoyable story, very lovely, and a cute adaptation of the original Cinderella story. There were some cute scenes in here, although there were some very cliché ones as well.

However, I felt like the whole ‘Veronica problem’ was resolved quite suddenly and quickly in the end. I felt like we were working towards that point for a while, and then it was suddenly just over. I also thought this book was a standalone, so I didn’t really love it when it ended on a cliffhanger. I do wonder if we’ll get a story about Laura as well since there seems to be a potential love interest for her.
“The feels are good for healing. They aren’t fun, but they exist for a reason. Quit trying to conquer them. Give in then move on.”

👠 The characters 👠
⚰️Ashley⚰️
Ashley was an interesting character. She definitely wasn’t your usual Cinderella, but this made it interesting. I liked the fact that she was working in the funeral home because it’s something that you don’t see very often. I must admit that it was a bit weird how she was telling everyone not to fall in love with Harry and all that, and then basically fell in love with him the minute that they met. I don’t really love the insta-love trope so that was a bit too soon for me.

🎤Harry🎤
Just like Ashley, Harry was an interesting character. I must admit that I’m still a bit confused about what he wants in life though, since I kept wondering what he wanted with his life since he seemed to love all those things in an equal matter. This confused me, since he seemed to have so many interests. Like I said for Ashley; he fell for Ashley real quick, which I didn’t really love.

🍪🛍️Side characters🔥🐎
Many of the side characters were your typical side characters, such as the evil stepmother Veronica and her daughters Maggie and Marta. They obviously sucked, but even more than they do in the original story. I saw it coming, and I hoped I was wrong, but they definitely suck. Laura and George were cute, and I was really shipping them. The fact that Laura is allergic to nuts just like Ashley was a weird coincidence, I mean, how often does that really happen? I don’t know, that just made me frown a bit.

👠 The writing 👠
I enjoyed the writing style; no use of overly difficult words and easy to read sentences. There were however some mistakes in writing, such as missing quotation marks, so please contact me M.K. Harkins if you want to know which ones stood out! Most importantly, it’s Nikkie de Jager and not De Jagar – my Dutch origins are not okay with that ;)

👠 Overall conclusion 👠
Overall, I thought this was a very cute story. It wasn’t insanely original, but still really enjoyable, with a cute romance. It was quite a predictable read, but that just made it easy to read; I finished it in one night. I don’t really like the insta-love trope, so that’s a personal thing, but it was enjoyable nonetheless. I adore the cover, I know I’ve already said it, but it is important to mention it again.

I love a good fairytale retelling and this is a great modern day retelling of Cinderella! Well written we descend into Ashley’s world as she tries to finish school and get away from her evil stepmother and step sisters and the funeral home that they run. Yep you heard me our modern day Cinders looks after the dead and makes them look good for their loved ones. Enter singer heartthrob Harry who’s been sent to Ashley’s school to finish the year out by the courts! They have instant chemistry but so many obstacles are thrown in their path, twists and turns thrown in our path and not one but two fairy godmothers to help them on their way. It’s a great read, a rollercoaster of emotions and some great characters ( and some not so great!) and I cannot wait to continue their journey in the next book!

Ashes is the first instalment in the Modern-Day Fairy Tale series by M.K Harkins. It is a modern retelling of the beloved fairytale, Cinderella- with some drama, angst, fairy godmothers, magic, and of course, romance.
We meet Ashley, who has been put to work in her stepmother’s funeral parlour and has no time for love. But fate has other plans when pop music sensation Harry James turns up in her life. Will he turn out to be her prince charming? No spoilers here, you will really need to read the story to discover all the developments for yourself….

Ashes is a sweet retelling of Cinderella with all the characters we love or love to hate. The prince (PopStar) finds his Cinderella working in a Morgue. Both must finish High School but the Evil Stepmother and stepsisters are plotting away...
Spend your money - the book is worth it. Great character development, lots of plot twists. I am looking forward to the next story in the series.

I received an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion but the best recommendation I can give is that I have shared it with my teenage daughter.

Mmmmm where to start. I have mixed feelings about this book. MK has some wonderful stories out there especially The Immortal Series which I love.

Ashes is a fairy tale rock-star romance but with an interesting twist. This modern-day Cinderella is definitely intriguing and unique.

I like a retelling if it is done well. Unfortunately, whilst the premise of the story is a good one, I think that MK missed the mark in pulling it all together with the all the right elements, some actions and a few conversations and wording. That’s not to say I didn’t like the story because I did but with a few changes I think it could be a really good story.

Please give the book a read because these are just my thoughts and may not be your thoughts.

This book features such a pure and innocent love story, that was like reading a more realistic fairytale book. I loved the fact that by reading this, I was transported back to when I was 6 or 7 sat reading Cinderella... it was wonderful!

If you want too read a book that is easy to read, enjoyable and well written, I highly recommend this one!

I love the mix of all the modern day Cinderella tales! Some are sweet and some are spicy! This is a teenage semi-sweet version with lots of chemistry and angst. Ashley and Harry are great together, and it’s a cute retell.

This was a cute read! This is a (sometimes morbid) re-telling of the classic story Cinderella. It's set in a modern time, with a teenage pop star instead of a prince. This is definitely a YA book, you can tell mot only in the content but also in writing style. I enjoyed reading this book as it was different than other reimagined stories I've read in the past. This is the first time I've read this author before and I'm excited to read more stories from her in the future.

I absolutely love all kinds of re-tellings. This one has to be one of my favorites! The author put such a fun spin on the classic story. The MC working at a funeral home and that's why she gets her nickname was genius. I like how the guy worked through his issues and evolved throughout the story too. It always is a plus for me when it's not just the MC that grows, but the other people in the story as well. as per usual for this premise, her step-mom and step-sisters are co-co for coco puffs, but this evil step-mom takes some cake! I hope Karma gives that woman everything back and then some! I will be 1ooooooooooo% reading the next book. I'm excited to see what else this author cooks up!

I might have doubted requesting an arc of this book for a few very short minutes. And then I decided that you can't go wrong with a Cinderella retelling. Not even when it's mostly a contemporary book. And certainly not with a pretty cover like this. I'm therefore very thankful that the author made this book available to request from BookSirens and I can already say that I couldn't have read this book at a better moment. I so needed a happy cheering up book promising me all will be well!

In a lot of ways this book reminded me of the A (Another) Cinderella Story movies which I loved so much when I was younger. Of course we all know the ingredients of the story: We have a girl with a stepmother and two stepsisters and a reason to stay with them. She has a job that makes sure she's not as perfectly painted as a lot of her high school classmates and of course she catches the eye of that one guy everyone wants to have.

Even though there is quite some drama in this book, I never felt like the characters were making things harder than they had to be. Of course, at some point a little bit of honesty wouldn't have hurt, but I also understood why the right moment and right place never arose. And there's one thing that was crystal clear in this story: the two main characters loved each other very much and literally nothing could change that. It was a matter of changing the circumstances.

And there were quite a few obstacles and circumstances to change. I have to admit that at some point it all felt like a little much and extreme, but by then I had already grown so attached to these characters that it couldn't bother me too much. I was rooting for them, screaming at the book, hating all the people trying to hurt them and keeping them apart and counting down the pages until things would finally get a little better.

If you loved the A (Another) Cinderella Story movies as much as I did, you will certainly enjoy this book too!

I received an ARC copy from the author and I am glad that I did. While the start of the story about the fairies was a little confusing (although it makes sense when you get to the end), it didn't take me long before I totally got into the story. I have read a lot of retellings of Cinderella but I thought this modern twist was one of the better ones. Overall it was a great read, I just wish it had been longer as I didn't want it to end!

A super satisfying read

Ashes is a bitter-sweet, swoon-worthy, cindrella re-telling, that will definitely win your heart. I loved every bit of this story. From the most adorable characters that I have read about (the protagonists) to the plot, everything is developed in a masterful manner.

Plot is full of drama, romance, jokes and suspense. I mean there are events in the book that are totally unexpected, surprising and these add soo much flavour to the entire story.

Ashley and Harry are amazing characters. Character development is on point. I love the fact that Ashley referred to her step-sisters as brat 1 and brat 2. I couldn't stop laughing at that. Ashley has a good sense of humour. On the other hand, the arc of the character Harry is commendable.

I think this book has the most satisfying ending. It was fully of surprises, and drama.

This book is a re-telling done well. I would definitely recommend this to everyone.

There isn't anything not to love. I knew from the title ,that this book would be something special. Fairytale retellings rock and the modern twists are the cherry on the top.
Funeral parlours and rock stars not exactly your conventional pairing but in this story somehow is works . It's alluringly written and thank goodness Ashley is not a total pushover. Cinderella with spunk!
I'm already eagerly anticipating the next book with someone more ( hopefully) guess appearances from "Cinderella" and her rock star 🌟
Love , love , love xoxo

very enjoyable story

Ashley is Cinderella in this modern day story of an awful step mother and step sisters trying to steal the life and inheritance belonging to Ashley. Ashley meets a pop star who’s been ordered to finish high school at her school. He’s chased by all the girls except Ashley. Her sisters are chasing him to obtain fame for themselves.

It’s a clean book suitable for any age. There are a few responsible references to drugs.

I never knew how much I’d like retellings!

Ashes by M.K. Harkins is the first in the Modern-Day Fairy Tale Series and was an unexpectedly amazing Cinderella retelling. It was so beautiful yet can continue to offer more! Ashes is a story of a girl named Ashley who lost both of her parents and is stuck with the worst step family ever. They want her trust fund, so they do the bare minimum to take care of her until she’s of age so they can take her money. She ends up meeting a guy and best friend who help her start to get out of her shell and back to herself, which gets the rollercoaster of a ball rolling.

All that I can say is wow! I didn’t know what to expect when I got this book, but I went in with open arms. I totally got the love back! I couldn’t put this down. I love a good Cinderella based or themed story but changing things to modernize it and make it relatable to our society took it to another level. I enjoyed the modernized perspective of the love or lack thereof, women experience today in addition to the relatable struggles Ashley and Harry experienced.

A super plus was the fact that Ashley was a girl of color rather than the traditional character design. It was a breath of fresh air to experience something different. The character designs were fantastic. We were able to experience the struggles that everyone was having plus we got to see the parallel struggles of Harry and Ashley. Let’s not forget their meet-cute, which was awkwardly adorable! I really enjoyed this story!

The ending felt a bit abrupt but it gave a closing. I wish there was a little more to it but I’m definitely intrigued about the next book in the series, Red.

I’d highly recommend this to anyone who loves a good Cinderella story but wants something a bit different.
