It’s time to party! This how-to guide will turn any gathering into a cheese-filled opportunity for connection and self-care—from the bestselling author of That Cheese Plate Will Change Your Life, “the grande dame of cheese boards” (USA Today).
“The ultimate party planning guide . . . You’re going to love this cookbook I am obsessed with.”—Gina Homolka, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Skinnytaste Cookbook
If you’re in the mood to celebrate life, anything can be a party. There’s nothing like the positive energy of being together, a festive atmosphere, and the spark of laughter and conversation—around the cheese plate, of course. But a party doesn’t have to be a big event; it can just be a mindset. The very act of making a cheese plate builds space for creativity and settles you into a self-care mood, and now, Marissa Mullen takes the art of mindful plating to the next level by turning self-care communal.
Featuring forty new cheese boards for parties of all kinds, thoughtful drink pairings, color themes, floral arrangement tips, tablescape ideas, playlists, and cheesy party games, this is the ultimate party planning guide. From cheese platters themed around holidays and special events, to dishes like gooey fontina dip and lush buffalo mozzarella caprese, and clever creations like the Thanksgiving Charcu-turkey and the Birthday “Cheese Cake,” these communal meals celebrate the way we connect with each other, and take cheese boards from a dish to a lifestyle. After That Cheese Plate Wants to Party.
I’m such a fool…I’ve been messing up charcuterie all this time…this book opened my eyes…
That Cheese Plate Wants to Party: Festive Boards, Spreads, and Recipes with the Cheese By Numbers Method by Marissa Mullen is all about making a fun cheese board and what to pair with it. It’s wonderful…
I have not previously heard of the “cheese by numbers” method but it makes so much sense in hindsight…
The author goes through a thorough breakdown of how to mix and match various items to maximize the effectiveness of your board. He tips more than help with ideas on creating your own.
Fortunately if you don’t have that creative spark, she has lots of suggested layouts.
Using a variety of ingredients, each cheese plate example includes what items to include (categorized along the cheese by numbers method), has a little summary on the vibe or event the plate is suitable for (even if the name doesn’t always make sense), and finishes it off with photos of how to assemble the cheese plate in the proper order (to keep it organized).
Assuming you have access to all the suggested items, it’s very easy to assemble them…
After the MANY plate options, she also has some recipes for dips and snacks to include with your cheese plate as well as some drink options (some of which can be served as mocktails).
The author also includes some tips for cheese plate hosting including games you might play…
Colorful photos, original combinations, comprehensive menus. Mullen’s second offering knocks the party cheese plate out of the park. The added touch of how to create flavor combinations from each plate elevate this book above other similar offerings. The inclusion of recipes, beverage and wine suggestions, and party games round things out by covering all aspects of the needs of a social gathering.
That Cheese Plate Wants To Party has several unique features including a Spotify play list for each board or plate, color coordinated arrangements and a six step arrangement strategy to aid in creating each presentation. It also includes a variety of recipes and a section on drinks. The art work is very good and colorful.
I've only made one platter ("that Bachelorette plate", p. 150), but I was very happy with the results.
What a great book! I love everything about it. Mullen begins with color palates to set the mood of your cheese party. Graphics in which the content of the board is numbered are very helpful. Anton of recipes follows. Next, drink recipes and pairing suggestions round out the food/ drink portion. Next, she offers suggestions for “cheesy” games. If you like a good cheese board, this book is a fun one.
I had no idea that there was a Cheese by Numbers method. Every plate looked gorgeous, and I got a ton of ideas for future parties thanks to this book.
However, there are some ingredients that are not easily accessible to the general public due to their price. If you are going to make a cheese board with one of these, be prepared to pay quite a bit to obtain enough of it for your event, or be prepared to make more affordable substitutions.
it was pretty and i did like the method of just knowing you need 6 categories on a cheese plate, but a lot of the recipes were either self explanatory or prebought items. would be a nice reference but i don’t feel like i learned much—give me infographics or give me death (she did have an infographic but i’m greedy)
Unique and diverse ideas, such as cheese plates by color (the blues, or warm tones), or an in-flight cheese plate that you bring with you when you fly. She also has fascinating drink suggestions, including mocktails.
You do need a good cheese store nearby to be able to make many of these plates (although there was one where all the items were from Trader Joes).
This book has fantastic ideas on how to create all sorts of themed boards for gathers and just a night in. By far one of my favorite cookbooks this year. Really easy to follow and the ideas are fresh and innovative. I loved this one so much that I decided to purchase it.
