!از زیبایی این کتاب هر چقدر بگم کم گفتم
اساطیر یونان یک کتاب کوتاه و پر محتوای دیگه از نشر دیکِی هست که خدایان و قهرمانان یونان باستان رو به سادهترین و با زیباترین تصاویر ممکن معرفی میکنه. این کتاب میتونه بهترین نقطهی شروع به دنیای اساطیر باشه چون متن بسیار سادهست و تصاویر بسیار واضح و به یادماندنی هستند. البته برای کسانی که آشنایی دارند هم میتونه جمعبندی خیلی خوبی باشه

برای خوندن ایلیاد این کتاب مقدمهی خوبیه چون خدایان و قهرمانانی که در ایلیاد هستند رو معرفی میکنه و بعد هم خلاصهی کل داستان رو میگه. برای خوندن اودیسه هم اینجا یک خلاصهی تصویری از کل سفر هست و اگر به اسپویلر کتابهای ۳۰۰۰ ساله حساس نباشید، میتونه مقدمهی کتاب باشه

This is such a wonderful illustrated edition of Greek Myths! The style is really sleek and well put together, and I love the small tidbits of added information such as the "sacred symbols" for each God that could be followed up for more stories if interested. Not only that, but the vibrance and simplicity of the illustrations act as a really lovely combination with the stories themselves.
The way this is written is something I really appreciate. Despite aimed at a younger audience, it's not over-simplified or condescending in any way, instead enacting the storytelling tone often used for such tales. Even more appreciated is the way these stories aren't romanticised, as is often the case in many interpretations. The nature of people's relationships aren't raised on a glamorised pedestal, instead merely explained as part of the story. It allows for varying interpretations on behalf of the reader themselves, rather than immediately setting a particular view in mind.
I also really loved the addition of the final section, a part dedicated to explaining how we know about such myths. From the artwork to the act of storytelling itself, it's a topic I've rarely seen mentioned in greek myth collections, and is a nice addition for anyone inspired to follow up with further research.

Growing up I loved Greek myths, but my schools didn't offer many books on them. I googled them on the Internet, but nothing was as fun as a good book growing up. I'm super pumped to grab a non-fiction children's book about greek myths! Ah, what a time!
There's a brief introduction to Ancient Greece and myths before the real action starts. Once you're in, it gets going and it's great! It brings to life the famous greek myths about how the world came to be, and it's told in a really compelling way with exciting pictures with it. Many (and I mean MANY) of the gods get bios as well as their stories told. It's a great collection that is made fun, fast and addicting. I honestly wish this would have been around for my greek studies back in grade school! This is a marvellous resource I highly recommend!
I absolutely love the art work. It has those greek mural vibes and was really impressive! Those stood out massively to me since they were so gorgeous and attention grabbing. Easily middle graders up to adults will enjoy this book.

I used this as the basis of my Greek Mythology unit with my fifth grade students who have learning disabilities and they LOVED IT.
I was a bit worried as the majority of my students struggle with reading and grasping characters/character traits as well as the majority of them are very, VERY Christian. But we were able to have some WONDERFUL discussions about the differences in religions, differences in cultures and they really loved hearing all of the stories about the gods and goddesses. I think hearing the stories and learning about how this was a real religion to the ancient Greek people really opened their eyes a bit - they had SO many questions and made amazing connections to their own beliefs. As well as when they learned something that directly went against what they believed, rather than saying that it was wrong, they asked about it and had many "oh, so not everyone believes the same things when it comes to god(s)" moments that were beautiful to watch.
They really surprised me with how much they loved the stories and how quickly they grasped everything and I really believe that it's because this book is written in SUCH an accessible and easy-to-understand way. They also adored the pictures and loved flipping through the book and looking at the illustrations while I read the myths to them.
I will 100% be using this for my Greek mythology unit from now on!

Egal ob Kind oder Erwachsener, die Geschichten der griechischen Mythologie begeistern einfach jeden. Da sie aber oftmals sehr klassisch gehalten werden, gehen viele Geschichten unter oder verwirren aufgrund der vielen Verzweigungen. Und da ich mich nicht scheue, Erklärungen auch in Kinder- oder Jugendbüchern zu suchen, zog mich dieses Buch einfach magisch an.
Es wird zwar als Buch für Kinder beworben, dürfte aber Jung und Alt gleichermaßen erfreuen. Hierfür dürfte als allererstes die Optik sorgen, denn schon beim Durchblättern faszinierten mich die Illustrationen, welche nicht nur herrlich farbenfroh gehalten waren, sondern oben auch ihren ganz eigenen Stil hatten. Die recht kantigen Darstellungen erzeugten einen Mix aus antik und modern, welcher aber stets klar und deutlich war. Egal ob die Darstellung von Göttern, Helden oder ganzen Mythen, man setzte alles unglaublich gut in Szene und erschuf dadurch eine ganz neue Art diese kennenzulernen.
Doch die Optik wurde noch von einem übertroffen und dies waren die Texte. Egal ob Beschreibung, Geschichte und Auflistung, alles wurde nicht nur in einer unglaublich angenehmen Schriftgröße dargestellt, sondern auch mit einer Leichtigkeit beschrieben, das selbst die verzwickteste Handlung plötzlich Sinn machte. Wer einmal ein Buch mit den griechischen Mythen gelesen hat, wird wissen, wie ausufernd manche Abschnitte sein konnten. Ich verhaspelte mich immer wieder in Geschehnissen und fragte mich schließlich was hier gerade überhaupt passiert war oder wie es dazu kam.
Eine Komplett-Sammlung der griechischen Mythen ersetzt das Buch aber leider nicht, denn es wurden nur sehr markante Geschichten herausgesucht. Für Personen, die noch nie die Mythen über „Midas goldener Hand“, „Die Irrfahrten des Odysseus“ oder „Orpheus und Eurydike“ gelesen haben, dürfte sich hier aber ein wahrer Schatz auftun. Mein persönliches Highlight waren aber, neben den Mythen, die wundervollen Beschreibungen der Götter. Neben Herkunft, Kinder und Zugehörigkeit, zeigte man hier auch auf, mit was für Symbolen man sie verband. Ich fand dies unglaublich spannend.
Dieses Buch ist nicht nur eine Schönheit, sondern auch noch randvoll mit Wissen gepackt. Selbst wer viele der Mythen schon kennt, dürfte überrascht sein, wie leicht sich manche doch lesen lassen. Ich erfreue mich selbst nach mehrmaligen lesen an diesem Buch, denn die obengenannte Mischung macht es einfach zu etwas ganz besonderem.

Stunningly written and beautifully illustrated, the author has succeeded in breaking down the ever-so complex Greek Myths to an introductory level for children.
It’s incredibly engaging with a perfect balance of lyrical writing and short sentences for young children. I am definitely buying copies for the little ones in my family!
The author also went about about abuse and sexual violence of Greek Myths in very tactful, child-friendly way. For instance, it says that Zeus loved a woman and then she “became pregnant”, instead of saying (as some children’s Greek Myth books do) that the woman “fell in love with Zeus and had a baby with him” when there wasn’t any consent on the woman’s part at all and it was, in fact, rape.
No matter if you’re an old hat at Greek Mythology or are looking to delve into these crazy stories for the first time, this is an excellent book that I cannot recommend this enough. It is for everyone, Jean Menzies (author) and Katie Ponder (illustrator) should be very proud.

This was a decent primer on the titans and the Olympians. This was a good start to learning about Greek mythology for children and laypeople alike, without passing judgment or commentary on the inherent sexism and gender role expectations.
Gorgeously illustrated, the images were as enticing as the text itself.
This book gave a good basic overview and I would recommend it to beginners interested in mythology. I can't help but wonder if the five star reviews written by the author's friends should include a disclaimer in their review and whether they are unduly inflating the star rating for this book. For someone wanting more in depth coverage, I would recommend looking elsewhere.

This is the perfect introduction to Greek mythology. The illustrations are absolutely amazing and the stories are easy to understand.
I adore mythology and I've been wanting to read more these past few years. However, I remembered nothing so this book helped me learn and remember so many things.
It's a simplified encyclopedia of Ancient Greece, their gods and the stories that we know today, from the Minotaur to Pandora.

Skvelý úvod do mytológie pre všetky vekové kategórie.
Ak ste dospeláci, ktorí sa v gréckej mytolígii nevyznajú, táto kniha je rovnako pre vás, ako pre deti, pre ktoré je pôvodne určená. Dozviete sa základné informácie, nejdete príliš do hĺbky a zistíte tak či vás to vôbec zaujíma. Mňa strašne, takže idem zháňať ďalšie mytologické knihy a filmy! A ešte navyše ju dopĺňajú krásne ilustrácie, ktoré vám pomôžu si všetko predstaviť. Skvelé fakt, nečakala som, že ma to bude tak baviť, a že ma aj taká detská kniha niečo naučí :D

This is a beautiful book. The illustrations are clean and bright and clearly explained.
It is also a very useful and informative book. It uses simple, straightforward language to explore, describe, and link Greek gods, heroes, and history. It is very much a picture book, but one that remains relevant with age. I'm in my 60s and greatly enjoyed it, but it is also very approachable to middle grade or even younger.
This book will remain on my shelves as a treasure, and I'm sure it will inspire many young people to further explore the ancient world.

Jean Menzies has put together something truly remarkable in this DK edition of “Greek Myths”. Drawing upon Hesiod, Homer, Apollodorus, Ovid and more, we are presented with a chronology of the most prominent gods, goddesses, monsters and mortals from Greek mythology. Each myth is captivatingly told in succinct and simple language, making it a highly accessible read. Though undoubtedly aimed at younger readers, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this book to adults as a useful preliminary, before jumping head-first into the aforementioned classic texts in the Graeco-Roman canon. The illustrations provided by Katie Ponder deserve equal credit; they are beautifully idiosyncratic and colourfully variegated - you could not hope to find imagery better suited to complement and heighten these evocative tales.

This is a well-illustrated guide to Greek myths for kids. The stories are just the right length to keep attention and provide the basic story and there are lots of little extras throughout. The artwork is bright and engaging. We still have an all-time favorite Greek mythology book in our house but this is a really nice entry to the theme.

Solid introductory overview of Greek Myths in a beautiful book with great paper, colors and illustrations. If you have a kid or a friend interested in Greek Myths this is an outstanding option.

Ancient Greece and Greek Mythology remains one of the most popular topics among classrooms, libraries and living rooms, a quick book search for ‘Greek Myths for Kids’ brings up a wealth of shining recommendations – old favourites and new wonders – covering every story and angle imaginable. It’s hard to imagine that there’s any originality on the subject left. Yet, Jean Menzies’s collection, Greek Myths, arrives on my doorstep with an enchanting gold foil cover and pages upon pages of tales and portraits and information that promises excitement, curiosity and humour. A glistening star in a sky full of twinkles.

Ancient Greece and Greek Mythology remains one of the most popular topics among classrooms, libraries and living rooms, a quick book search for ‘Greek Myths for Kids’ brings up a wealth of shining recommendations – old favourites and new wonders – covering every story and angle imaginable. It’s hard to imagine that there’s any originality on the subject left. Yet, Jean Menzies’s collection, Greek Myths, arrives on my doorstep with an enchanting gold foil cover and pages upon pages of tales and portraits and information that promises excitement, curiosity and humour. A glistening star in a sky full of twinkles.
From the very first page of Greek Myths, Menzies takes us back in time to the beautiful Mediterranean and introduces us to a flurry of great gods and goddesses, heroic mortals and terrifying monsters. From the fall of Ouranos, to the war of the Titans, to the birth of Athena, Menzies uncovers the classic, the epic and even the outrageous across well known favourites, as well as some stories you might not have heard before. And still we dive deeper. With additional spreads on Greek myths today, ‘Greek Storytelling’ and ‘Worshipping the Gods’, Greek Myths guarantees an impressive and immersive experience.
What struck me the most with Greek Myths though was Menzies’s fairytale-esque retellings. With specialities in Greek Literature, Athenian Law, Greek Mythology, Menzies doesn’t overwhelm her reader with context and knowledge. Instead, her approach, which is both charming and engaging, captures the joy and importance of storytelling, gently reinforcing the notion that these great adventures and tragic disasters have been passed down and enjoyed by many generations. Coupled with digestible chunks of background information and a useful pronunciation guide, Greek Myths is a perfect introduction into the lively world of Greek mythology.
It is without doubt that this stunning, stylised book is a true labour of love for both Menzies and illustrator Katie Ponder.
Ponder’s illustrations are a spectacular visual feast! Beautifully contemporary, Ponder has masterfully re-imagined the myths with a fresh, stylish twist for today’s reader, and effortlessly breathed a new life into this mythical world. Utilising every inch of the page, the bold, striking colour palette, fused with the dazzling profiles of the gods is just utterly hypnotising.
A book to pore over or simply dip in and out of, Greek Myths will be treasured and loved by many for sure.

Gorgeous artwork to go along with these wonder myths. I have always loved reading about the gods and their shenanigans, and this will be a lovely addition to anyone's library, especially those with young children. My favorite story of the bunch was that of Eros and Psyche, theirs has always been one of my favorite romances, and this was a wonder interpretation of the story.

More accurate rating: 8.5/10 for myself as an adult, but 5 stars is accurate enough considering this is primarily aimed at younger readers.
I basically took a point away for the book not featuring Hecate. 😜 Some tales are also, ahem, given a bit of moral white-washing, because it's meant for children, which made me smile even though I realise there's a valid reason for it. 🙃 Otherwise yes, it is a lovely, and prettily illustrated compendium of Greek mythology, and was quite the cozy read for this inveterate mythology nerd.

The lovely Shannon was kind enough to gift me this glorious copy of Jean’s book of Greek Myths recently and I had the best time reading it this weekend!
Aimed primarily at kids (although I learned loads!) it takes the reader on a journey through the myths, legends and hero’s of Ancient Greece and shows how those old stories still show up today.
It’s cleverly written, gorgeously illustrated and I’d highly recommend it!

Interessant für jeden, der sich nochmal einen ganz einfachen Überblick über die griechischen Mythen verschaffen möchte.
Die Geschichten sind schnell erzählt und bilderreich illustriert. Ideal auch für Kinder.

I love the range of stories included in this collection. There is definitely something for everyone. I adored it. I know that as a child I would have never wanted to put this book down. I would highly recommend it. Also the illustrations are beautiful and the colour palette used for each story or character is stunning.

واقعا دوستش داشتم، نقاشیها و انتخاب رنگش فوقالعاده بود. خیلی به فهم ارجاعات کمک میکنه و درعین حال روان و بامزهست. برای خودم قسمتهای مهمترش رو خلاصه کردم ولی مجبور نیستید بخونید اصلا.
خدایان
خدایان از هاویه (chaos) به وجود آمدند.
اولین خدا گایا یا مادر زمین بود. گایا طبیعت بود و رود و جنگل. گایا اورانوس یا خدای آسمانها را به وجود آورد و از آمیزش آن دو تایتانها حاصل شدند. گایا غیر از تایتانها، سایکلوپسهای تک چشم و هکاتونکایرسها را هم به دنیا آورد که به خاطر ظاهر نامطبوعشان مورد خشم اورانوس قرار گرفتند و رانده شدند. البته که مادر طبیعت مانند هر مادر دیگری این رانش را بر اورانوس نبخشید. گایا با همکاری پسریش کرونوس با داسی مضرس اورانوس را زخمی کرد. از خون اورانوس که به دریا میریخت آفرودیت، الههی عشق و فیوریها، سه الههی انتقام زاده شدند. اورانوس از قدرت کنارهگیری کرد و به قلمروی آسمانها گریخت و کرونوس جانشین پدر شد. او سایکلوپسها و هکاتونکایرسها را از درون گایا-جایی که اورانوس آنهارا حبس کرده بود- آزاد کرد ولی بلافاصله بعد از دیدن آنها از شدت ترس و اشمئزاز به سرعت برشان گرداند. این اقدام احساسات گایا را به شدت جریحهدار کرد و باعث نفرینشدن کرونوس شد تا به همان شیوه که اورانوس از قدرت برکنار شده بود روزی توسط فرزند خودش از تخت فروکشانده شود. کرونوس که با خواهر خود، رئا ازدواج کرده بود صاحب ۵ فرزند شد: هرا، دیمیتر، هستیا، هادس و پوسایدون. کرونوس برای جلوگیری از وقوع نفرین مادر تمام فرزندانش را بلعید و بچهها به علت نامیرا بودن، درون شکم کرونوس بزرگ شدند. فرزند ششم یا زئوس در خفا به دنیا آمد و بعد از بلوغ با مسموم کردن پدر خواهر و برادرانش را آزاد کرد. پس از آن جنگی بین تایتانها و خدایان قدرتمند جدید درگرفت که ۱۰ سال طول کشید و با کمک گرفتن زئوس از داییهای قدیمی (سایکلوپسها) بلاخره خدایان جدید پیروز شدند و تایتانها را به قلمرو زیر زمین تبعید کردند. عصای سه سر پوسایدون، صاعقهی زئوس و شنل نامرئی هادس از جمله هدایای داییها به خدایان جدید بودند. اطلس از فرزندان تایتانها بود که به علت جنگ علیه خدایان جدید نفرین شد تا ابد وزن آسمان را بر شانههای خود حمل کند. پوسایدون، زئوس و هادس قلمروها را کاملا عادلانه با قرعهکشی به کمک سنگریزههای رنگی بین خود تقسیم کردند. زئوس خدای خدایان، پوسایدون خدای دریاها و هادس خدای دنیای زیرزمین و مردگان شد.
زئوس معشوقههای بسیار داشت. دوقلوهای او، آرتمیس و آپولو خدایان شکار و موسیقی از لتو زاده شدند. آتنا خدای دیگر شکار و فرزند مورد علاقهی زئوس از متیس، خدا�� پند و اندرز به دنیا آمد. دینوسیوس محصول مشترک زئوس و سیمل بود. هرمس فرزند زئوس و نیمفی به نام مایا بود که چنگ (لیر) را به آپولو هدیه کرد. هفستوس حاصل بکرزایی هرا بود و خداوند آهنگری نام گرفت و با آفرودیت ازدواج کرد. او به علت پایین انداخته شدن از کوه المپ توسط زئوس میلنگید و بر خلاف سایر خدایان سوار الاغ میشد. دیمیر الههی محصولات کشاورزی و گندم نیز از زئوس صاحب دختری به نام پرسفون شد. پوسایدون با نیمفی به نام آمفیریت ازدواج کرد و از او صاحب پسری به نام ترایتون شد که اولین مرد دریایی (با بالاتنهی انسان و پایینتنهی ماهی) گردید. سلین و هلیوس به ترتیب خدایان ماه و خورشید و مسئول نظم شبانهروزی بودند. ائوس نیز خداوند طلوع و غروب و مسئول رنگ صورتی آسمان هنگام گرگ و میش و باز کردن دروازههای المپ به هنگام صبح بود. هستیا خواهر هادس ربالنوع آتش و مسئول گرم کردن کانون خانواده و نگهداری از خانهها و شهرها بود. هرمس پسر زئوس و مایا نیز خدای پیامرسان بود که ربالنوع سفر و رویا نیز شمرده میشد.
هادس، پرسفون دختر زئوس و دیمیتر را با خود به دنیای زیرزمین برد تا همسرش باشد. دیمیتر از غم دوری دخترش دست از مراقبت از محصولات کشید و گیاهان شروع به پژمردن و خشکیدن کردند. پرسفون نیز به علت خوردن ۷ دانهی انار در دنیای زیر زمین طبق قوانین وضعشده دیگر نمیتوانست به سطح زمین برگردد. زئوس برای جلوگیری از خشکیدن محصولات و نابودی انسانها موفق شد ترتیبی اتخاذ کند که پرسفون بتواند ۶ ماه از سال به سطح زمین برگردد و باقی آن را زیر زمین بگذراند. به این ترتیب فصلها به وجود آمدند. با شروع ۶ ماه دوم سال و رفتن پرسفون به زیر زمین، پاییز فرا میرسید و گیاهان شروع به خشکیدن میکردند. دیونیوس نیز که فرزند زئوس و سیمل بود و از ران پای زئوس زاده شده بود جوانترین خدا و مسئول تئاتر، جشنها و شراب گردید.
انسانها و خدایان
اوریون: پسر پوساسیدون و شاهزادهی کرت، توانایی راه رفتن روی آب داشت و در شکار خبره بود و بیشترین وقت را با آرتمیس الههی شکار میگذارند. اوریون توسط عقربی غولآسا کشته شد. با درخواست آرتمیس روح اوریون به آسمان فرستاده شد و ستارهها و صور فلکی اوریون یا شکارچی را بهوجود آورد.
خلقت انسان: پرومتئوس و اپیمتئوس دو برادر از تایتانها بودند که در جنگ خدایان در جبههی زئوس جنگیدند و در برابر زئوس به آنان مسئولیت پر کردن زمین با اشکال مختلف حیات (به ترتیب انسانها و حیوانات) را محول کرد. بعد از خلقت انسان از گل، زئوس از آنها خواست در ازای زندگی روی زمین به صورت دورهای و به نشانهی سپاسگزاری به درگاه خدایان هدیه تقدیم کنند، هرچند در نهایت از هدیهی آنان ناخشنود شد و استفاده از آتش را برای زمینیان ممنوع کرد. پرومته بر خلاف خواست زئوس آتش را به صورت پنهانی در ساقهی رازیانه به زمینیان هدیه داد و مورد خشم زئوس واقع شد تا به کوه کوکاسوس زنجیر شود و هرروز بعد از حملهی وحشیانهی عقاب و خورده شدن جگرش بمیرد و روز بعد مجازات تکرار شود. بعدها هراکل، پسر زئوس او را ازین مجازات رهاند.
پاندورا: اولین زن فانی بود که زئوس به شخصه او را خلق کرد و اسمش را پاندورا به معنی "تمامی هدیهها" گذاشت. پاندورا به اپیمتئوس هدیه شد تا همسر او باشد. زئوس به او ظرفی با در بسته هدیه کرد تا با خود به زمین ببرد و به او توصیه کرد درب ظرف را باز نکند. پاندورا بر کنجکاوی خود فائق نمیشود و سرانجام ظرف را میگشاید و تمامی شرها از ظرف بیرون ریخته و زمین را دربرمیگیرند. پاندورا موفق میشود درب ظرف را پیش از خروج کامل محتویات ببندد و به این ترتیب امید داخل ظرف باقی میماند تا رهنمون پیکار انسانها با شر باشد.
ارفئوس و اوریدیس: ارفئوس چیرهدستترین نوازنده و موسیقیدان روی زمین و فرزند آپولو بود تا آنجا که آپولو چنگ خود را به او میدهد تا آوای موسیقی ارفئوس را بشنود. ارفئوس همسری به اسم اوریدیس داشت که با گزش مار جان خود را از دست میدهد. خدایان که از شنیدن نوای حزین چنگ ارفئوس به ستوه آمده بودند ترتیبی میدهند تا او بتواند با هادس ملاقاتی داشته باشد و با پادرمیانی پرسفون همسر هادس شانسی دوباره به این زوج داده میشود. هادس به ارفئوس و اوریدیس اجازه میدهد دنیای زیرزمین را ترک کنند به شرطیکه تا خروج از دروازهها ارفئوس به اوریدیس نگاه نکند. ارفئوس موفق نمیشود به دستورات او عمل کند و اوریدیس را بار دگر از دست میدهد.
دنیای زیر زمین
تارتاروس تاریکترین بخش دنیای زیر زمین بود که تایتانها به آن تبعید شده بودندو جایگاه خاطیانی بود که گناهانی بزرگ مرتکب شده بودند؛ از جمله سیزیف، تانتالوس و داناییدها. سیزیف مجبور بود هر روز سنگی را به بالای تپهای بغلتاند و روز بعد دوباره این کار را تکرار کند. داناییدها نیز محبور بودند در ظرفی که هیچگاه پر نمیشد را تا ابد آب بریزند. تانتالوس نیز نفرین شده بود تا ابد در برکهای در مجاورت یک درخت بایستد ولی هیچگاه نتواند بنوشد یا سیبی بچیند. فِیتها سه الههی تقدیر بودند که نخ زندگی فانیان را با چرخ نخریسی میگرداندند تا زمان قطع آنها به هنگام مرگ فرا برسد. رود آکرون نیز رودی بود که ارواح برای رسیدن به دنیای زیرزمین باید از آن میگذشتند و سوار قایق کارون میشدند و به عنوان عوارض به او یک سکه میپرداختند.
دنیای قهرمانان
پرسئوس: پسر زئوس و دانایید احتمالا یکی از شناختهشدهترین قهرمان است که مدوسا را میکشد و سر اورا برای پولیدکت عموی خود میبرد.
آمازونها: گروهی از زنان جنگاور بودند که در جنگ تروی به پاریس کمک کردند و برای کمک به آتلانتینها گورگونها را شکست دادند.
جیسون و آرگوناتها: جیسون توسط عوی خود پلیاس مامور شد پوست گوسفند زرین متعلق به شاه آییتیس را به دست آورد. او و سایر همراهانش سوار بر کشتی آرگو راهی سفر شدند و به کمک دختر آییتیس، مدهآ موفق شدند به پوست زرین دست پیدا کنند.
مینوس و مینوتار: مینوس پادشاه کرت هیولایی نیمه انسان و نیمه گاو را در هزارتوی جزیره زندانی کرده بود و هر سال 7 پسر و 7 دختر یونانی قربانی مینوتار میشدند. تا اینکه تسئوس شاهزادهی یونان تصمیم میگیرد مینوتار را از بین ببرد و آریادنه دختر مینوس به او در این راه کمک میکند. در مسیر برگشت، دینوسوس خداوند شراب عاشق آریادنه شده و او را به همسری خود درمیآورد و تسئوس دلشکسته راهی یونان میشود. مینوس نیز سازندهی هزارتو ددالوس را تنبیه کرده و خروج او را از کرت ممنوع میکند. ددالوس و پسرش ایکاروس موفق میشوند با چسباندن پر پرندگان با موم بال بسازند و از کرت فرار کنند ولی ایکاروس بر خلاف توصیهی پدرش به خورشید نزدیک میشود. موم ذوب شده و ایکاروس سقوط میکند.
هراکل: پسر زئوس که به علت طلسم هرا همسر و فرزندان خود را به قتل میرساند و برای رستگاری مجبور میشود 12 ماموریت خطرناک را به انجام برساند و پس از آن به درجهی خدایی نائل شده و به المپ میرود.
اودیسئوس: حاکم جزیرهی ایتاکا که در جنگ تروی ایدهی ساخت اسب چوبی را میدهد و باعث پیروزی یونانیان میشود و در مسیر بازگشت به خانه از تروی دچار مصائب فراوان میگردد و تمامی همراهانش را ازدست میدهد. از جمله این مصائب رویارویی با جادوگر قدرتمند سیرسه و نیمفی به نام کالیپسو هستند که اودیسئوس را به مدت 7 سال زندانی میکند. اودیسئوس پس از 10 سال به ایتاکا و همسرش پنلوپه باز میگردد.
آنلانتا: دختر پادشاه آرکادیا که توسط یک خرس بزرگ میشود و برای انتخاب همسر مسابقهی دو برگزار میکند تا هرکس از او سبقت گرفت را به عنوان همسر اننخاب کند. هیپومنس با سه سیب طلایی او را فریب میدهد و در مسابقه برنده میشود.

خلقت انسان: پرومتئوس و اپیمتئوس دو برادر از تایتانها بودند که در جنگ خدایان در جبههی زئوس جنگیدند و در برابر زئوس به آنان مسئولیت پر کردن زمین با اشکال مختلف حیات (به ترتیب انسانها و حیوانات) را محول کرد. بعد از خلقت انسان از گل، زئوس از آنها خواست در ازای زندگی روی زمین به صورت دورهای و به نشانهی سپاسگزاری به درگاه خدایان هدیه تقدیم کنند، هرچند در نهایت از هدیهی آنان ناخشنود شد و استفاده از آتش را برای زمینیان ممنوع کرد. پرومته بر خلاف خواست زئوس آتش را به صورت پنهانی در ساقهی رازیانه به زمینیان هدیه داد و مورد خشم زئوس واقع شد تا به کوه کوکاسوس زنجیر شود و هرروز بعد از حملهی وحشیانهی عقاب و خورده شدن جگرش بمیرد و روز بعد مجازات تکرار شود. بعدها هراکل، پسر زئوس او را ازین مجازات رهاند.
پاندورا: اولین زن فانی بود که زئوس به شخصه او را خلق کرد و اسمش را پاندورا به معنی "تمامی هدیهها" گذاشت. پاندورا به اپیمتئوس هدیه شد تا همسر او باشد. زئوس به او ظرفی با در بسته هدیه کرد تا با خود به زمین ببرد و به او توصیه کرد درب ظرف را باز نکند. پاندورا بر کنجکاوی خود فائق نمیشود و سرانجام ظرف را میگشاید و تمامی شرها از ظرف بیرون ریخته و زمین را دربرمیگیرند. پاندورا موفق میشود درب ظرف را پیش از خروج کامل محتویات ببندد و به این ترتیب امید داخل ظرف باقی میماند تا رهنمون پیکار انسانها با شر باشد.
ارفئوس و اوریدیس: ارفئوس چیرهدستترین نوازنده و موسیقیدان روی زمین و فرزند آپولو بود تا آنجا که آپولو چنگ خود را به او میدهد تا آوای موسیقی ارفئوس را بشنود. ارفئوس همسری به اسم اوریدیس داشت که با گزش مار جان خود را از دست میدهد. خدایان که از شنیدن نوای حزین چنگ ارفئوس به ستوه آمده بودند ترتیبی میدهند تا او بتواند با هادس ملاقاتی داشته باشد و با پادرمیانی پرسفون همسر هادس شانسی دوباره به این زوج داده میشود. هادس به ارفئوس و اوریدیس اجازه میدهد دنیای زیرزمین را ترک کنند به شرطیکه تا خروج از دروازهها ارفئوس به اوریدیس نگاه نکند. ارفئوس موفق نمیشود به دستورات او عمل کند و اوریدیس را بار دگر از دست میدهد.
دنیای زیر زمین
تارتاروس تاریکترین بخش دنیای زیر زمین بود که تایتانها به آن تبعید شده بودندو جایگاه خاطیانی بود که گناهانی بزرگ مرتکب شده بودند؛ از جمله سیزیف، تانتالوس و داناییدها. سیزیف مجبور بود هر روز سنگی را به بالای تپهای بغلتاند و روز بعد دوباره این کار را تکرار کند. داناییدها نیز محبور بودند در ظرفی که هیچگاه پر نمیشد را تا ابد آب بریزند. تانتالوس نیز نفرین شده بود تا ابد در برکهای در مجاورت یک درخت بایستد ولی هیچگاه نتواند بنوشد یا سیبی بچیند. فِیتها سه الههی تقدیر بودند که نخ زندگی فانیان را با چرخ نخریسی میگرداندند تا زمان قطع آنها به هنگام مرگ فرا برسد. رود آکرون نیز رودی بود که ارواح برای رسیدن به دنیای زیرزمین باید از آن میگذشتند و سوار قایق کارون میشدند و به عنوان عوارض به او یک سکه میپرداختند.
دنیای قهرمانان
پرسئوس: پسر زئوس و دانایید احتمالا یکی از شناختهشدهترین قهرمان است که مدوسا را میکشد و سر اورا برای پولیدکت عموی خود میبرد.
آمازونها: گروهی از زنان جنگاور بودند که در جنگ تروی به پاریس کمک کردند و برای کمک به آتلانتینها گورگونها را شکست دادند.
جیسون و آرگوناتها: جیسون توسط عوی خود پلیاس مامور شد پوست گوسفند زرین متعلق به شاه آییتیس را به دست آورد. او و سایر همراهانش سوار بر کشتی آرگو راهی سفر شدند و به کمک دختر آییتیس، مدهآ موفق شدند به پوست زرین دست پیدا کنند.
مینوس و مینوتار: مینوس پادشاه کرت هیولایی نیمه انسان و نیمه گاو را در هزارتوی جزیره زندانی کرده بود و هر سال 7 پسر و 7 دختر یونانی قربانی مینوتار میشدند. تا اینکه تسئوس شاهزادهی یونان تصمیم میگیرد مینوتار را از بین ببرد و آریادنه دختر مینوس به او در این راه کمک میکند. در مسیر برگشت، دینوسوس خداوند شراب عاشق آریادنه شده و او را به همسری خود درمیآورد و تسئوس دلشکسته راهی یونان میشود. مینوس نیز سازندهی هزارتو ددالوس را تنبیه کرده و خروج او را از کرت ممنوع میکند. ددالوس و پسرش ایکاروس موفق میشوند با چسباندن پر پرندگان با موم بال بسازند و از کرت فرار کنند ولی ایکاروس بر خلاف توصیهی پدرش به خورشید نزدیک میشود. موم ذوب شده و ایکاروس سقوط میکند.
هراکل: پسر زئوس که به علت طلسم هرا همسر و فرزندان خود را به قتل میرساند و برای رستگاری مجبور میشود 12 ماموریت خطرناک را به انجام برساند و پس از آن به درجهی خدایی نائل شده و به المپ میرود.
اودیسئوس: حاکم جزیرهی ایتاکا که در جنگ تروی ایدهی ساخت اسب چوبی را میدهد و باعث پیروزی یونانیان میشود و در مسیر بازگشت به خانه از تروی دچار مصائب فراوان میگردد و تمامی همراهانش را ازدست میدهد. از جمله این مصائب رویارویی با جادوگر قدرتمند سیرسه و نیمفی به نام کالیپسو هستند که اودیسئوس را به مدت 7 سال زندانی میکند. اودیسئوس پس از 10 سال به ایتاکا و همسرش پنلوپه باز میگردد.
آنلانتا: دختر پادشاه آرکادیا که توسط یک خرس بزرگ میشود و برای انتخاب همسر مسابقهی دو برگزار میکند تا هرکس از او سبقت گرفت را به عنوان همسر اننخاب کند. هیپومنس با سه سیب طلایی او را فریب میدهد و در مسابقه برنده میشود.

4 out of 5 🌟I can read this all day!
If I say that 'Greek Myths' are beautifully illustrated, it'd be an understatement. This book is just gorgeous. I want to print out every page and put on my wall. I love everything from page design and how text is perfectly fitted inside the pictures to the font-face which is enough fancy to draw my attention but ordinary enough to read.
The myths are sorted chronologically from the creation of the world and gods to the more recent events in Ancient Greece's beliefs. The stories are brief and summarized, there isn't too much narration just the chain of events, hence it reads more like a textbook, not a leisure publication. Despite the title covers a great number of details and it's perfect to learn Greek Mythology.

For personal enjoyment I would award just 3 stars, BUT I am aware this is a children’s book and I’m in my 40’s!!!! As an adult I obviously am looking for more detail, more description. But as a child, this is a great book for giving a really good view of the Greek Myths and legends! I would have cherished this book as a 10 year old!!! Great artwork, short stories with simple dialogue. Also, the pronunciation guide at the back, now come on, I really appreciated that! And also, the correct version of Herakles not the Disney version, yes, ok this book is great!!!!!

This was a delightful read! I love the way that it was written, it gives so much information in short paragraphs and really taught me a lot that I didn't know. I liked especially the parts of the real life in Ancient Greece, how the god were worshipped, by whom, where. I also loved the two-page spread with all the gods, I can imagine reading it to a children and going over everything that they learned in the book about each god.
And for the first time I was actually curious about the Illiad and Odyssey!? That was unexpected haha
I really recommend if you are interested in Greek Myths at all. It's informative, inspiring, beautifully illustrated, entertaining. It will definitely be a book I will read to/with my children in the future.

What an amazing book to learn about Greek gods and heroes quickly and easily! This book is the best introduction to Greek myths, with spectacular illustrations that made the journey easier and more enjoyable. At the end of the book, I discovered that the author hosts a podcast and a YouTube channel. I highly recommend checking them out!

I had a good time reading this book to my sister, who is very interested in Greek mythology. It is presented in a way both younger and older audiences can enjoy, and I appreciated that my sister and I could have further discussion and use critical thinking over what we read.
