Rate this book

Dragons are mythical creatures. But in truth, dragons are neither mythical not creatures, per se.

After finishing watching and reading BLEACH, it was only a matter of time until I discovered the existence of another Tite Kubo's masterpiece - Burn the Witch. I watched the anime version first, and it was fantastic, so, naturally, I had to pick up the manga version as well.

First of all, I want to say that I'm overjoyed that Burn the Witch exists within the BLEACH universe and I'm looking forward to see all of my beloved characters interact with one another (it has to happen eventually, right? I mean, Ichigo did study in London so he HAD to stumble upon Wing Bind at some point, right??).

Anyways, in Burn the Witch we're following two teenage witches, Ninny Spangcole and Noel Niihashi, who works for an organization called the Wing Bind with a specialization to rear and conserve dragons. Yes, that's right, the BLEACH universe has actual DRAGONS. And these dragons can be found in Europe. In EUROPE!! (in Great Britain, to be exact) Can you believe that something exciting is finally happening in this continent?? UNBELIEVABLE!! There is also the concept of the magical, Reverse London, which I adore!

Within several short chapters Tite Kubo managed to show a fantastic story with incredibly likeable characters with a ton of potential to grow. I'm in love with both Noel and Ninny (less with Balgo and Macy), and Bruno must be one of the coolest characters in the BLEACH universe (I said what I said). There were so many things to discover within these relatively short chapters, I was once again mind blown by Tite Kubo's creativity. This world is as amazing as BLEACH's Japan. I shouldn't be surprised, but I was still swept off my feet. Not just by dragons (they are a big reason for it, though), but by all the interesting, magical stuff that was mentioned during the story.

"It's time to shine, Niiha! You're doing it for the money! I'm doing it for the achievements! And if anybody asks, we're doing it for social justice!" [Ninny]

Both Ninny and Noel are such fun characters to be around and I love their dynamic. Ninny is the energetic and sarcastic one, with a clear goal that she's dutifully following. Noel is the quiet and more reserved one, who wants to think things through before acting. They are different in every aspect, but manage to work surprisingly well as a duo. The only complain I can have is the lack of their backstory. We find out that they came from the Front London, but how did that happen and what kind of lives they had before? What about their families, their friends, their occupation? I just need to know!!

There are also the characters of Balgo, Macy, Bruno and Billy Banx Jr (yes, I count him too). Balgo is a more irritating and less entertaining version of BLEACH's Kon. He's supposed to be the comic relief of the story, I guess, but for me it doesn't work. He's just there to cause problems for our heroines and for making heart eyes in Noel's direction. Macy is quite the same, but more obsessed with Ninny than Balgo is with Noel. She transforms from a quiet character into a violent one in a matter of seconds whenever she sees a person standing close to Ninny. It wasn't cute and it wasn't endearing, and it certainly wasn't funny.

But Bruno and Billy? I ADORE them. As I said, Bruno is the coolest. Easily. He acts as the story's antagonist, in a way, so I should dislike him on a spot, but how could I?? He's handsome, and powerful, and funny, how can I not love him?? He's quite a manipulator, trying to do anything to be recognized and written in the pages of history. I wonder why he's so adamant at being famous, if he's already in a high position in the society (as one of the Top of Horns members). Where is his backstory, Tite Kubo?! I just want to know!! Oh, and I adore Bruno's bond with his dragon. I adore the dragons in general, both the cute ones and the scary ones, but the bonds between the humans and the dragons will always have a special place in my heart. The Bruno and his dragon bond isn't shown in a flashy way, but you could see it in the smallest of ways, and that's enough for me to know that Bruno Bangnyfe is a good person, worth to love. Bruno Bangnyfe has a heart, you guys! ;)

When it comes to the character of Billy Banx Jr (who's Ninny and Noel's boss), he's an interesting mystery. He seems like the fun old guy who's content on sitting in the safe walls of a building instead of fighting, but in the truth he's a guy with great skills. I wonder what kind of power he actually has and what was up with his heritage!

There are also Bruno's colleges from the Top of Horns organization. The designs of these characters are top notch, but all they do is just show up in one scene. It reminded me of the cool designs of the OG Gotei 13 in BLEACH that was shown in the flashback to never be shown ever again. How can you make such awesome characters and do nothing with them?! I'm angry in their behalf!

And the dragons?! The dragons are so cool! There are so much info about them and still so much to discover, I have chills when I think about it. I hope that Tite Kubo will go back to this story one day, because it truly has a ton of potential. Everybody anticipates BLEACH's Hell Arc (me too), but I wish that the author focused more on Burn the Witch (and a potential crossover?? Maybe?? Please??). I will patiently wait for it to happen!

It's hard to recover from an opening scene that has a creepy character trying to peek up the skirt of one of the main characters. It's even harder when that creep becomes the ongoing comic relief and possible romantic interest. Ugh.

I didn't realize this was part of the Bleach universe when I got it from the library. I tried that series once a long time ago and dropped it fairly quickly. This one is no improvement -- it's all bickering and battles -- and I'm dropping it now.

Actually, I'm just realizing there may not be anything to drop. It's been five years since this first volume, and there is currently no sign of a second on the horizon. Same difference to me.

"We're fighting a fairy tale here. What else are we supposed to rely on, huh?!"

The beginning of a promising series.

I was quite intrigued by the premise of the story, so I am quite relieved that it did not disappoint. The concept, the characters (some more than others), the system's rules—all of it made me appreciate the story. I love how it is set in the same universe as Bleach, which makes me all the more excited for when I start reading the series again for a nth time.

My favorite bit, though, has to be the fairy tales connected to dragons. I loved Cinderella's design and abilities. (Honestly, the reveal and fight really made it 10x better.) It was also great to discover the different units and meet their leaders. (My favorite, thus far, being Bruno Bangnfye, to the surprise of no one.)

I hope there will be news soon concerning the next volume in the series.

Mangaka Tite Kubo returns with a brand-new series that has an original concept centered around witches and dragons while juggling some of his titular character concepts.

His character designs are, however, as stunning as ever, sharp and sexy. It's too early to tell if this will deliver on its ideas, but it's not bad.

At least it's enough (sort of) material for the anime movie (split into three episodes) to work with.

Yours truly,

Noel Niihashi and Ninny Spangcole are witches. They work for the Wing Bind in Reverse London their job is to deal with dragons. Either the domesticated ones that get used for resources or the eradicating the violent ones. There are two Londons...Front London, where the humans have no idea that dragons exist and believe Reverse London. Reverse London is not a myth at all, residents here can see dragons and they are fully aware of Front London. But although they are two separate places they are still somehow linked.

It's been a long time... A LONG TIME..since I've read any manga. So while I didn't LOVE this tome I certainly didn't hate it. I'm definitely into the witches and dragons story line and I'm excited to see where it goes from here.

I was very interested in this one when I heard about it. Sadly for me, this one didn't quite land for me. I just didn't connect to the story. The art is lovely, and I do think that people are going to love this one. It just didn't connect for me, and I'm sad about it.

Started off slow but it got better. I’m hoping volume two odds better. The story is more like a 3.5 but the artwork pushes it to a 4.

I really loved this! It was so great to come back to Juno’s art style and seeing new fun creature and character designs. I really enjoy the set up for this larger story with a built in system of things to tackle in the future. I can’t wait to see where this goes when it resumes and I love that Kubo can create at his own pace now!

"If words won’t convince you… maybe death will."

This was an okay read. Parts were fun while others kind of bored me. The art style was amazing but it wasn’t enough to save this book. Probably won’t continue with this series.

3.5 estrellas.

I'd seen the adaptation and said I'd read the paper version to familiarise myself better with the universe, but I was so bored. I found this tome messy, with characters I don't necessarily want to follow any further. I have a hard time telling myself that it's the same author who wrote Bleach.

I absolutely love the overall lore of this story- a reverse, dragon London. It’s fun and silly. The dragon designs are at times that classic brutal monster and others a cute little potted plant or pool cleaner. This is for a younger crowd and deals with more personal, petty dramas but the characters are interesting enough.

I felt like I was reading this and sneaking into middle school drama- a little odd. Also, why do so many perverts obsess over schoolgirls, always gave me the ick!

Sep. 13 - 2020: Good start. Very different from Bleach, but in a way that I'm really digging. Excited for part 2, whenever that's coming. My biggest complaint was that it was only 4 chapters long, so I'm glad to find out this was just setup for a longer series. Can't wait to see where that series goes.

Nov. 17 - 2021: I bought the volume, and re-read it. Still very excited for part 2... Like a year later. I'm assuming Kubo is busy with the new Bleach arc, No Breathes From Hell. Once that's done I'm sure we'll get at least an announcement about Winged You To. Just gotta wait. But until then, I'll probably re-read this volume a couple times. I also got to read the pilot chapter for the first time, and that added a lot of cool context to the series. All in all, fantastic read.

Imagine Taking THAT For A Walk!

A decent read. I enjoyed it but I thought because it was being promoted as a one shot that it would have a contained story which it didn't really. Things were left unresolved or up in the air. There was also a character that really annoyed me and took away a bit of my enjoyment. However that said, I loved the artwork and most of the characters, the world was fascinating and I would be interested in reading another volume. Worth a read if you're a fan of Tite Kubo!

I really like the idea of a different branch of the Soul Society from Bleach operating in London to take care of rogue dragons, so the premise had me intrigued from the very beginning. I don't think there are enough pages to fully get a sense of the characters and the deal behind the scenes in the WB, but there is definitely enough to get me interested in exploring more.
The art is as eye-catching as Kubo's has always been, with the same caveat that he only seems to know variations on three character designs.

An unfocused, unsatisfying story about witches living in London who work in some alternate-ish London, protecting the populace from dragons, which could be actual dragons, but could also be, like, ghouls and other creatures that want to/can cause harm.

Also, it's death-penalty illegal for the magical populace to even come into contact with dragons. Gee, that rule sure makes sense when it's shown that at any time a dragon could just go rampaging around your neighborhood and knock into someone.

I wanted to love this. I love fantasy. I love graphic novels. The description on the book sounded amazing-like this was going to be exactly the sort of thing I love. The cover looked like this might be funny. I was a bit bored reading this. And the jokes seemed to be mostly of the Boobies! Panties! variety. If that’s how you get your chuckles no harm no foul but…. No thanks.

This manga was such a pleasant surprise! Burn the Witch’s world and story ended up being very different from what I expected, but in the best way possible for me. I fell in love with everything it had to offer and am incredibly excited to read more whenever Kubo makes the “second season” happen.

The subtitle for this volume, "Don't Judge a Book By Its Cover," is perfect for a variety of reasons. First, the version I got came with a plain plaid slipcase, which...isn't the most engrossing choice. But in a way, it's fitting, because I went into this series blind, just curious to see what Tite Kubo was up to, post-Bleach. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I certainly wasn't prepared for Seriously, when I got to the big reveal at the end of the first chapter, as to what exactly "WB" stands for, I was absolutely delighted by what could come of this. Because, let's face it, it was clear Kubo was getting burnt out by the end of Bleach. Seeing his confirmation of this in a brief note at the end of this volume about how happy he is to be able to draw manga at his own pace has me very excited to see what he can do with Burn the Witch

That said, there were times I found myself wishing Kubo had taken a slightly more leisurely pace, now that he can. We go from a revelation about Balgo that places him in the care of Noel and Ninny, our protagonists, to Balgo becoming a wanted man, to learning about a set of uber-powerful dragons, to having one of those dragons show up in what really amounts to a rather short span of time. At times, it feels like we don't have much of a chance to just breathe and appreciate the world Kubo is building here, and that's a shame. Reverse London is interesting. The workings of Wing Bind are interesting. The dragons, their types and uses to Reverse London society are interesting. I just wish we had a bit more time to get acquainted with it all before things start blowing up.

Still, that's about the only real complaint I have about Burn the Witch. The art is great, and it's refreshing to get back to what Kubo can do when he's not rushed. Some of the characters initially seem a little flat, but likable, and they're beginning to get fleshed out. And as I said, the world is just neat, and knowing what I do in the spoiler tag above, I'm really excited to see where this goes.

This was really good.

I had a lot of fun reading this, the story was intriguing and had a good pace. The comedy was on point, i chuckled more than i thought i would, and the action was amazing. I love the art, so clean and some of the panels were incredible well done. I haven't read Bleach but i've always liked Kubo's art style, this looked so good.

All of a sudden, Balgo became interesting character to me, i like the fact that Kubo toned down his pervy side. Noel and Ninny's interactions are one of the best things in this manga. I also like all the new characters, the new Gotei 13 looks really cool. I liked the whole zodiac sign thing going on.

The only thing i didn't like (that much) are those weird guns, they don't look good ar all.

Overall, i know there a second volume/season that's gonna come out and i can't wait for it. I hope it gets serialize cause this shit is good.
