I really appreciate the author taking the time to produce a book on this subject matter! However, it just wasn’t a good fit for me. I’d recommend this book to someone interested in improving their methods of self care and learning healthier coping mechanisms but is unsure of where to start.

I felt the tips and references to be vague in terms of how to care for yourself as a black woman. There are brief references to micro aggressions and sexism that are faced by black women but I was hoping for a more empathic approach to discussing them rather than just stating that we deal with them. Over all the references and tips felt superficial, like a reposting of a blog rather than an in depth how to manage emotions in this day and age. If you’re looking for a start this is it, but if you’re like me and have already been through the blog post on your feed, this isn’t going to offer more. A refresher at best.

Being completely honest, this book is in need of some editing. There were some spelling and grammatical errors that could easily be corrected with better proofreading. Also, there seems to be no real flow to the book, making the reading experience a bit unpleasant. However, there are some real gems in this book. If you don't mind a rough ride, this book will leave you with some great takeaways.

The book started out informative (for me). I was able to jot down notes and quotes that resonated with me and that I could apply to my life. However, most of the book is pretty much obvious advice for taking care of yourself. I’d say it’s a good book for novice and unlearned individuals in that area.

It helped me realize I’m on the right track with my personal growth

I have been on a journey of self-care for 10 years, so many of the suggestions in the book I already incorporate. This book is a great resource for people who are just starting their self care journey or for those who have been in the game for a while and need a reminder they are on the right path. Very well written and easy to follow.

Great tips

This book is a good guide to maintaining emotional self-care and explains why we should. This book also gives guides towards self-care as it relates to eating healthy as well as physical care for ourselves.

Would have been very good and useful if I was not a counselor or someone who has been counseled for years. I wish there would have been a section on emotional self-care for those of us who have MOOD disorders. That being said, I do recommend this to people in need of it (it’s like feelings 101). It’s therapy on how to process and handle your emotions in a book, and that is invaluable when it comes to being an emotionally mature, emotionally regulated, and self-aware adult. The writing kind of drove me nuts (as in, the format). It is very spaced out and the text seemed large. I felt the author could’ve used more contractions to seem more personable/less robotic and make the information easier to digest. I also noticed a handful of typos. Lastly, she used in-text citation way too many times and I wasn’t a fan of that. Just tell us what you want to say in your own words please.
