Scotland's Melody

Rate this book
Melody Foster has been granted every luxury available save one: the ability to love whom she chooses. When her father reveals that she is to marry a wild Scot she’s never met, Melody defies him and declares she will never marry without affection. Her choice to marry Richard, a footman in her father’s household, prompts her family to disown her, and she goes to London to risk everything for love. But she is blindsided. Without a penny to her name, her love is worthless to Richard, and he decides to change tactics. Perhaps she could still serve a purpose—after all, her family can’t sit idly by while she is held for ransom . . .

Desperate to escape the man she thought she loved, Melody finds allies to aid her: first, her old governess and then Cameron Findlay, a handsome stranger who is startled by the distraught young woman who catapulted into his life. Cam finds himself sympathetic to the young woman’s plight, so he and his sister agree to take her on as a servant in their household. Cam and Melody are powerfully drawn to one another, but can Melody ever trust her heart when it was so terribly wrong before?

I started this book one day and finished it the next! I was completely taken in with Melody and her situation. She truly was a stubborn young woman and her impetuousness lead to some not so nice consequences that she had to get out of. "When I planned my trip to London, I had meant only to find Richard Cole. I did not expect to be running from him."

In short, Melody falls in love with a footman, refuses the marriage her father has arranged for her to a man in Scotland, her father disowns her and fires the footman, she runs away to London to find the footman, she finds the footman only to discover he never loved her and only wanted her dowry. Now she's running away and hiding from said footman. This does sound like something that would happen to a 19 year old headstrong girl.

I loved Melody's story! I liked that Melody's former governess took her in, and that Melody was willing to learn to clean and cook even if she wasn't very good at it. I was happy she had someone who cared about her and could also give her advice. I LOVED her meet cute with Cameron in the carriage. I thoroughly enjoyed all of her interactions with Cameron and his sister Elsie. I would love to see more of Elsie, especially after the way the epilogue ended!

I thought Melody could be rather funny and her internal dialogue had me giggling to myself quite often. I liked seeing her change and grow as the story progressed. She'd been hurt by Richard's deception and didn't know if she could trust herself again, even though she could see that Cameron was nothing like Richard. I loved watching Melody and Cameron fall in love and was sad when the book ended. Be prepared for a book hangover.

I was pulled into this story right from the beginning and couldn't wait to see where Melody ended up after her decisions led her down a road she wasn't expecting.

I liked how the author opened the book! Great way to grab the reader's attention and set the stage. There were flashbacks that the author included in the story which I really enjoyed getting a better understanding of what had happened prior to the opening of the book. Especially since we saw it as a whole scene instead of the main character just explaining it to another character.

I loved the theme of Fate in this book and how it all played into the story and how the story played out. It left me smiling and very happy!

Melody was a character who definitely knew her mind and what she thought she wanted. But after making some decisions that didn't quite pan out how she thought they would, she became more guarded and unsure of herself and what love truly is. I liked how the author addressed that aspect of the story and the tension that it brought to the story.

Cameron and his sister are definitely some of my favorite characters in this book. I loved their sibling relationship and their fun wit and banter. They're very quick on their feet. Combine them with Melody and you get several great scenes! I was laughing and smiling and doing some swooning as well.

There's a sweet and slow love story that will touch your heart and have you cheering for these two! I loved how the title fit into the book as well. And all the Scotland scenes! Be still my heart! I need a vacation to Scotland pronto!!!

I hope you enjoy it if you pick it up!

While I found the writing style to be a little simplistic, I enjoyed the chemistry between Cameron and Melody. Their love story was sweet and wholesome. It was lovely to see Melody grow into herself and chart her own path. As well, her friendship with Elsie was endearing and kept me reading. I really want to visit Scotland now! Overall, this was a sweet romance that played out exactly how I expected it to.

Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion!

This book is completely enthralling, I could not put it down! I was swept away so completely that I finished at 1am. Melody was one of the most stubborn and headstrong characters, she was determined to do things her own way. Cameron and Elsie were delightful characters that felt like friends.

The entire book I felt like I was right there alongside Melody. I felt her fear as she ran from those who wanted to capture her, I felt her joy at being seen for who she was as a person and not her dowry, and I felt the love as she feel deeply for one who saw her for who she truly was. The sparks were flying off the pages as the chemistry heated up between Melody and Cameron. There was a twist to the story that kept me page turning. I was wrecked by the time I finished the last page. And the ending?! Seriously, I may need therapy…. You will have a book hangover for sure with this clean regency romance with all of the feels!

I made the mistake of starting this book in the evening. I didn't get much sleep. I woke up early to finish the book. I did not want to put this one down.

Melody wants to marry for love. I wholeheartedly support this. She finds out the hard way that not all men are honest or have her best interests at heart. Her mistake of running away to the wrong man led her to the right man.

I loved Cameron and his sister. She couldn't have chosen to hide in a better carriage. When she met them she found the path to happiness. Not to say that they were perfect or that there weren't challenges to overcome in the book. There is a lot of story in the middle that left me captivated.

I could not give Scotland's Melody a higher recommendation. I loved this book and would want to read it again.

This is my first book by Katie Stewart Stone and it definitely won’t be the last! From the get go, the story starts off with a bang. The main character, Melody is running for her life after her decision to run off with the footman instead of agreeing to an arranged marriage proves not only unwise but dangerous. Cut off by her father with nothing to recommend her she finds her old governess in London and is taken in. Instead of relying solely on her governess for support, she applies herself to learning to become a servant.

After trying to escape Richard, the evil footman, again, she winds up in the carriage of a wealthy man from Scotland. Cameron and his delightful sister Elise rescue her from the situation and take her in as a servant. As Melody becomes closer to the family, she can’t help but like both of them. They show her the love and acceptance she’s always yearned for. But, what happens when Cam shows he might have feelings for her? Will she run away or trust her heart which has led her astray before?

Cameron is such a swoonworthy hero! I loved his Scottish brogue, his witty repartee, his romantic side, and his patience with Melody. He does withhold some key information from her which adds unneeded complication to the situation, but his motives are understandable. Elise was an absolute delight. She’s such a kind, spunky, open hearted person and I loved her passionate response to life. I can’t wait to read her story.

Melody is a character who grew on me. The story is told from her point of view, so we’re only getting her observations. She’s headstrong, stubborn, passionate, and impetuous. She definitely learns some hard lessons as the story progresses. I understood her need for caution in developing a relationship with Cam, but I really felt sorry for him with her push/pull responses. I did admire her ability to make the best out of her situations. Instead of complaining about her fate, she accepts responsibility. I also loved the messages of family reconciliation and forgiveness.

The castle in Scotland is a dream! I loved the hidden passageways, the gardens, and the beautiful descriptions of the setting. I also enjoyed the poetry, harp playing, and other unique aspects of the story. There’re elements of mystery and danger, hidden identity, as well as sizzling romance clean Regency romance fans will enjoy. While it’s more modern than traditional Regency, it completely drew me in and I can’t wait to read more, especially with that epilogue! I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own and I was not required to provide a positive review.

Thank you, Net Galley and the author, for giving me an ARC in exchange for an honest review, all opinions are my own.

Where to start, I had seen this lovely novel presented on Instagram a few days ago and I had been elated to see it in Net Galley for an early ARC. I was over the moon about it, as the characters seemed to be strong, witty, and held well-written. I do not have a degree in how history is or was back in the era that this book is set in, so for a novice like me--I look for characters that will garner my attention and make me want to get to know them.

Katie Stone did an excellent job at writing the characters and their backgrounds, to fully fleshing them out by mid-way of the book. However, as I continued to love the flirtations between Melody and Cam, Melody pulled a doozy out of the left field, leaving me floored. The fact that she would make an accusation of such a nature and then further berate Cam into nothing, was repulsive, and the fact that he was willing to forgive her and be guilt-tripped by her own insecurities? That is not love, that's manipulation and narcissistic behavior at its finest.

Melody continued to be manipulative, disguising it as being cute and flirty when I saw a weak and deranged young woman who used her wiles to manipulate a man she already knew had feelings for her. I couldn't continue with the novel because this book just encourages narcissistic behavior in relationships, and I am not for that. With all that Melody hurled at Cam, he should have left her and never looked back--I honestly couldn't even stomach how he easily forgave her for the despicable behavior after just dancing with her at a ball? Then Melody had the audacity to make ground rules while purposely flirting with him, and Cam accepted her terms after she legit accused him of something that shouldn't be taken lightly while guilt-tripping him for days?

No, just no. That's not romance, that's not how it should ever work. I just--no. This book is not for me, and just a fair warning to others who do read the novel, we may have differing opinions, and you have the right to it--as I do to mine. I felt this novel could have been a major hit until that vapid and unnecessary scene. There was just no turning back or fixing a relationship with how she kept acting afterward, it just, you cannot treat people that way and tell them you love them. With the utmost respect to the author, this novel is given 2 stars, and the only reason for the two stars is for Elsie.

Scotland's Melody has a very rambunctious female main character. Melody is nineteen, stubborn, naive, and running away with a man who she thinks she's in love with. Her father disowns her after Melody proclaims she's not marrying the stranger from Scotland that her father chose for her. Melody soon learns that "her love" was fake and he's after her and her family's money.

This book has Melody running away a lot from men, her family, and her feelings. I truly loved Scottish brother and sister, Cam and Elsie. {I'm excited to know that Elsie's story will be the next one written. She had quite the personality and spirit.} They took Melody in when she needed help and taught her some things about life too. Soon Cam is falling for Melody but there are trust issues. I felt for Melody as she had already had her heart broken once and was scared to love again.

The big "mystery" is soon revealed that causes much angst but is resolved well. Melody changes so much from the beginning of the story as an impetuous girl to a young woman. It's a fun journey to see her take and also it's wonderful once the setting settles in Scotland. One of my favorite scenes takes place with Cam reading a poem to Melody. I found a video of a Scotsman reading the poem and his voice makes your toes curl. I included this video with my review on my blog if you are interested.

Overall this was a sweet story, easy to read, and I loved how Melody and Cam finally came together.

I enjoyed this original romance and the journey it took me on. I'll be the first to admit that initially I wasn't sure how I felt about Melody and her naivety as well as somewhat selfish and spoiled nature, but the author did a good job of having her character grow and by the end of the book, I came to like her. The supporting cast was wonderful. Elsie in particular was a great side character and after that ending, oh boy oh boy, I need the next book!
Cam was a great hero and I liked the way the cover was pulled back on him and his motivations as the story unfolded. There were a few things I predicted, but I felt the connections and chemistry and enjoyed the book so much I didn't put it down but finished it easily in one sitting.
I received an advance reader copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I recommend this book.

I really enjoyed this book. I liked how Melody was trying to run away from her a future she thought she didn’t want because she felt like she knew best only to end of getting into lots of trouble. I liked how through out this story she came to realize that Scotland and the people were not what she thought they would be like. I liked the romance between Melody and Cameron. I liked that even though Cameron knew who Melody was he was willing to respect her want for secrecy. I liked the characters and would love to see more stories with them in it.

I absolutely adored this book. It was a joy to read. Melody is a hoot. She is headstrong, stubborn and a pure delight. I loved her instantly. I thoroughly enjoyed how the author wrote her character. Then I met Elsie and I felt the very same way. She is another wonderful character. Cameron was a Scottish dream. He was clearly smitten with Melody from the start, but waited patiently for her to come around and figure things out. The last parts of the book were extremely sweet when Melody abruptly changes direction and tends to things that were left behind. There very tender and sweet moments that brought some tears. I loved how the book was written too, simply from Melody's perspective. And oh the things that went through her mind, I was laughing out loud and smiling a lot. I look forward to more books from this author.

2⭐ DNF @ 12% due to multiple bookish pet peeves (see below). I picked this up because 1. Scotland and 2. It was a nomination for the Swoony Awards. I think this author has potential if she gets some better beta readers. She has good ideas! Just needs a bit more polish.

Things that bothered me:
• Melody kept making foolish decisions. Incompetent characters need more redeeming qualities than being hardheaded and spoiled. . .
• 1st person POV. This book would have been stronger in 3rd person. 1st person is hard to pull off and should only be used if it adds to the voice of the story like A Lady’s Guide to Fortune Hunting or Yours is the Night or a modern romcom. But this time it detracted from this book.
• Historical inaccuracies. I read a lot of historical fiction. Sometimes if the story is fun enough, I can let them slide, but little things kept irritating me—like the fact that she introduces herself to someone and then gives her first name with barely an acquaintance.
• FLASH BACKS every other chapter in the beginning of the book. Flashbacks pull me out of the story unless they have a really good purpose, but every other chapter?? Especially when they could easily have been incorporated other ways. No thanks.
• Too predictable. Romance is predictable right? It's the 'how' that intrigues me. But I just saw the twist coming way too early and it took away some of that ‘what will happen’ magic.
• Illogical character choices. Even if a father cut his daughter off from her inheritance for being disobedient and running off with a stable boy, that doesn’t mean he wouldn’t pay for her kidnapping ransom!
• One of the big clinchers for other readers occurs around 55% or Chapter 16. Having already decided to DNF I skipped ahead. Anyway, not the romantic tension I was looking for . . . just more of our immature heroine being a bit of a brat. 😬

“I harbored ill feelings toward Mr. Finley for a few days after our conversation about my past. My personality was childish like that.” 🙄

The concept was good, but I'm sorry, Mr. Finley deserves to be treated way better than he is by manipulating, moody Melody.

In Scotland’s Melody, a 19-year-old flees an arranged marriage, only to be betrayed by the man she loves, disowned by her family, and left to fend for herself in London.

I appreciated the overall plot of the story. It’s difficult to not enjoy Scotland as a setting either once we get there. The relationship between Melody (the protagonist) and Elsie was sweet; however, their relationship does NOT pass the Bechdel test. The book as a whole barely passes the Bechdel test.

Unfortunately, the writing is overwrought. It seems that there was abundant use of a thesaurus, even when the fancier words break the flow of a sentence or the overall narrative. The first-person POV is also not well executed. There is a lot of telling, in part because of this POV I suspect. For example, “His eyes were tight, but he wore an easy smile as he walked away.” I understand what the author is trying to convey here - but this sentence just doesn’t make sense.

From a plot perspective, while the protagonist grows over the course of the novel, she’s ultimately saved over and over again by a man. (A man whose accent is written out in an unnecessary fashion most of the time he has any dialogue. Mild spoiler: Also a man who experiences insta-love with a portrait.)

Finally, this story is more of a classic Regency in that it doesn’t push against class or interrogate social standards. In fact, it aggressively seemed to reinforce them. Perhaps Melody should have listened to her father to begin with. Perhaps she shouldn’t have trusted the footman without money or land in the first place. Perhaps only the rich deserve the rich. It’s a slippery slope. With writers like Courtney Milan, Sarah MacLean, Alexis Hall, Cat Sebastian, and many others trying to push at the very least feminist, if not always overtly diverse or queer, stories that break the mold - this Regency was a little disappointing to read.

Thank you to NetGalley for this e-ARC!

Melody is 19 and flees her family home after her father announces he has arranged a marriage for her. She believes herself in-love with a footman. After finding him in London she realizes he was hoping to use her for getting her dowry or a ransom. But her father has disowns her. Again she runs, eventually taken on as a house servant by Cameron which quickly changes to companion for his sister Elsie.

There is attraction between Cameron and Melody but she is hesitant to trust her feelings as she has been mistaken before. The characters are well developed as are their motivations. The story plays out very predictably. If you’re surprised by anything, you don’t read a lot of historical romances. There is occasional awkwardness in writing because the story is told in first person from Melody’s POV. The meaning is there but you get a lot of information about Cameron’s feelings or reactions based on how she reads his face.

A few things I didn’t love. I found Melody’s vacillating on trusting her feelings frustrating. I understood her reasons but you can’t break rules of society by freely kissing and then keep putting Cameron on perpetual hold. Her father explaining he regretted his actions didn’t make a lot of sense. When did he regret it? Not when he told the footman he wouldn’t pay a ransom. Nor did he make any effort to try and find his 19 year old daughter. Her sister was able to find her, but he didn’t try. And what was the actual moral of the story. She should have just stuck to the arranged marriage? Nothing she did on her own really accomplishes anything.

My favorite character in the story is sister Elsie. She is fun, helpful and has her own love interest. I care enough about her to look for her story in Stone’s next novel. Thank you to NetGalley and Covenant Communications for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was a tough one to rate. I was ready to give it four stars as it was wrapping up and then I read the epilogue and just got mad and wanted to give it one star. My recommendation is that, if you decide to read it, quit after the last chapter and don’t read the epilogue. It is not necessary or essential to the story. I liked the characters and the story, it was predictable and I did get weary of Melody’s lamentations but then she would go back to being a fun character. Cam’s sister was a delight and added so much to the story. So, I recommend all but the epilogue.

Read it for the:
- Hidden Identity
- Banter and Flirt
- Quick-paced plot
- Cast of Characters
- Irony

This book was just what I needed. Sweet, light-hearted, and well-paced, Scotland’s Melody was a great read and intro to this author's writing style for me.

I enjoyed the main characters, Cameron and Melody. Cameron was the ideal lead for a hero, being level-headed and flirty at turns, I loved the fact that even though this story is told completely from Melody’s POV, you can clearly see his thoughts and feelings and how deep they ran for Melody. Melody grew on me as the story went on. She’s strong-willed, impulsive, and witty which made for some funny moments. To be honest, there were a few parts that I felt she needed to pause and think about her actions before making decisions, but that was her personality and it was clearly seen from the get-go.

While I would have liked to see both characters undergo a bit more growth, I was overall satisfied with the dynamic and the romantic tension between the two. The swoon factor was present every time they were together, and I loved they brought out the in each other. I enjoyed their relationship and found Melody’s hesitation to pursue it realistic-considering her experience with love before. This made for a back and forth that served the angst needed to give this story needed to round it off.

While this is a historical romance, I liked the author's modern voice and felt it worked well with the story and didn't take away from the reading experience, it even added to the humor factor. I loved the irony woven through the plot. I liked the secondary characters as well, even though the villain kept showing up at the most untimely moments. My favorite secondary character was Elsie, Cameron’s younger sister. She was a ray of sunshine and I need her to get her own story. The potential there is for a second book! I love the setup already.

If you're in the mood for a page-turning, swoony read with plenty of Scottish vibes, this one is for you!

To say I loved this book is almost putting it mildly!
Worth more than just 5 stars!
I enjoyed it so very much - on many levels.
This book was well written, has excellent characters and engaging storyline. It kept me eagerly turning pages right to the very end (which was great too!).
The romance is clean, with great kissing scenes.
No bad language.
I love this author's writing style. Her stories flow well, with good descriptions, dialogue, and chemistry between Melody and Cameron.
Cameron... I really love his character!! Kind, charming, and full of surprises, and of course handsome, with a delicious Scottish brogue... sigh...
I was given a copy of this book, but am not required to give a review. This review is my own opinion, and is gladly given because this book captivated me, and was entertaining.
I totally look forward to this author's next book, and I highly recommend this one!!

I love a good Regency tale and I would say Scotland's Melody by Katie Stewart Stone has all the elements of a good story. A rebellious young lady, an evil villain and a heroic young man all add up to a grand adventure. The characters were likeable and the settings were great. I gave it 4 stars because as much as I enjoyed it I saw the ending much too soon. I do look forward to reading the next book as I want to read Elsie's story.

So brew up some tea and curl up for a very enjoyable read!

I was given a copy of this book with no expectations. All thoughts are my own.

Overall, this book was a winner for me. I have been thinking about this book for a few days and how to review it, and I realized that I don't think I have read one quite like it. There were elements that I don't really remember in other books before and I liked the combination of tropes.

I think what drew me in was the flaws in each character. That may sound odd, but I appreciate that both of the MC were not picture perfect. They each had their flaws that made them more personified. Melody was rash and didn't always think things through. For example, marrying a man she didn't truly know and rejecting her family 100%. I can understand being upset with her circumstance, but she took it a bit too far. However, I can appreciate her kindness and longing for something pure and wholly hers, instead of it being made up for her. Melody was also practical. She was hard working and didn't think herself above trying to work, which most women of her social standing at the time would have never thought of. I will always love Melody for that.

Cameron had flaws too, which were mostly found out near the end of the book so I won't go into so much details to avoid spoilers. But his flaws were also coming from a pretty genuine place, much like Melody's. They were not out to hurt someone, but to try and find happiness, they allowed their flaws to come into play. I loved that Cameron was there for her though. He didn't look over her or through her.

Those may seem negative, but to me it was big plus. There are so many books that have these perfect characters and it can seem out of touch. But to find a book that shows how sometimes our flaws and weakness can actually bring us to something that has the potential for much greater happiness? That is one to pick up. I loved finding that in these two characters. It allowed me to enjoy the more perfect aspects of fiction more effectively.

I liked that there was a string of events that led Melody and Cameron to find one another, and that there was healing in the course of the book. I enjoyed watching Melody come to see Scotland in a different light through the book. I don't know anyone that truly doesn't like Scotland in one way or another, so it was fun to watch her go through a transformation that way.

I could easily see myself picking this one up again. Katie Stone did a great job bringing in some interesting challenges these two MC's went through.

A charming, sweet Regency romance for those who believe in fate and second chances. Melody runs away rather than be forced to marry a man she doesn’t know from Scotland. The man she thought she loved, only wanted her money and she had to run for her life. Her running brings her to a strange carriage and she meets a Scottish brother and sister. She agrees to accompany the pair to Scotland. Melody realizes her mistakes and opens her heart.

I loved the Scottish words and locations. The romance was slow burn with some delicious kisses. I adored the phrase, “Love awakens you.”

This was a sweet and fun book! It is the first book that I have read by Katie Stewart Stone but I really enjoyed it! I am definitely going to be reading more of her books. Scotland’s Melody is written by Katie Stewart Stone.
Melody was a complicated character. There were times when I was so frustrated with her and her decisions. However she grew on me throughout the book and I love getting to see her grow and mature. Melody was young and in love but she made a mistake however she ended up paying for her mistake.
Cameron was a lovely character. He was so interesting to read about and I loved getting to know him more. He was so complex. However Cameron was kind and I loved how he cared and teased his sister. Cameron had to come to grips with his feelings and learn how to interact with Melody. She was not what he had expected and had changed things.
I adored the romance that grew between Melody and Cameron. It was sweet to read about them connecting and getting to know each other. I love how they became friends first and then they grew to love each other. The plot was interesting and I was really engaged in the story. I wanted to see how Melody and Cameron were going to overcome their differences. There were so many surprises along the way and I loved it!
I love Cameron’s sister and I saw hints of a second book which I am super excited for. Sibling relationships are one of my favorite things to read about and I adored their relationship. I liked the family aspects in this book.
Scotland’s Melody was a wonderful sweet book! I really enjoyed it and I definitely want to read more by this author. Scotland’s Melody is a clean historical romance.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the publisher through Netgalley. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, a positive review was not required.

This one was just okay for me. I felt like the story dragged and the Melody was a bit annoying. I liked Cameron, just couldn’t see why he was interested in Melody. 🤔

Scotland's Melody is a sweet story that I thoroughly enjoyed and am happy to have read. I kind of want to just go back and re-read it a second time. There are so many swoony moments between Melody and Cameron and I loved him as the hero. There are themes of love, loss, trust, etc. These things are heavy and are unique for everyone and everyone processes these things differently, as well. I liked the line when Melody thought that love was enough for her, to compensate for her sacrifices. But when love isn't there- could she continued to live with her sacrifices? Love seemed to be a luxury in that time period and Melody was trying to do everything she could to seize it, but was left battered, bruised and unfortunately as sometimes happens, bitter, in the process.

These characters are flawed and human, learning many hard lessons, oftentimes the hard way. I think that makes it a little hard to enjoy the story for some. I have read other reviews and the things that people didn't like about the novel. I can see where they're coming from, but I guess I can also see things a bit differently and try to see Melody and her actions in a different light. Melody, for better or for worse, hasn't known anything different in her life than being raised to be spoiled, entitled and accomplished. This was life of privilege those of her class enjoyed. With the little say that women had in their own lives at that time period, she wanted to have a say in who she married and preferred she married because she loved them. She, as a sheltered young woman who didn't know any better and had little experience with the world, chose incorrectly and makes an enemy of those that love her instead. She gave her heart freely to someone that didn't deserve her or take care of it. She comes to quickly regret her decision and harsh lessons follow. She didn't go crawling back to her family, she owned her choices and did what she needed to in order to follow the course she set in motion for herself. She tried to learn new skills to be able to provide for herself all while nursing a broken heart from not only a deceptive man, but also from losing her family. Having to completely adjust to a new life with still mourning severely must've been very hard for her. Life doesn't stop moving just because something sad happens.

Melody tries to have hope, but her trust in not only others has been shattered, but more-so trust in herself is gone. She doesn't trust her ability to make wise choices and is fearful of being rejected and hurt again, as is anyone who has been hurt. Who would willingly go through that again? She is torn between her mind and her heart and as a result in trying to guard her heart, she has some further trials and heartaches. I agree that she lashed out unnecessarily at Cameron and was rather cruel. I can only assume this was a "fight or flight" situation and she chose to fight, because it was easier than accepting the truth, even though it was completely wrong. I think Cameron was hurt, but understands how much Melody is hurting and is so good at being patient in earning her trust and letting Melody heal. I see this in kids, they would rather fight and blame someone else than admit to being wrong, oftentimes saying very hurtful things, letting fear and emotions drive their words and actions. It's not fair and it doesn't make it right, but sometimes parents just have to be patient, taking the brunt of children's misplaced anger and hope that they can eventually see reason and let their love for them comfort and heal them. Cam has known all along who Melody is and has known that he needed to give her time and I can only hope that he realizes Melody doesn't truly mean what she says, that her fear is driving her words and actions.

I wish Melody had learned faster who she could trust, but of course, I think she had to trust herself, forgive herself and allow herself happiness again after the pain she caused everyone. Forgiving one's self and allowing yourself the ability to feel like you deserve happiness again is a battle in and of itself. I do like the lessons that she learned, not that her father was right and she should've just listened to him in the first place, but that we should open our minds and hearts to other possibilities and not judge prematurely. Obviously not every situation or arranged marriage would work out so well, but if you never try, you would never know. I hope the little cliffhanger at the end of the book turns into Elsie's story. She was a sweet, fun character as well and I hope we get to see her future happy ending.

When Melody (19yo) ran away from home to marry the man she was in love with instead of the man her father chose, she didn’t imagine actual running would be required. Instead of living each day buoyed up by true love, Melody finds herself struggling to move forward with her new life as a disowned woman with no prospects. Determined as she is to forge her own path, Melody struggles to accept Lady Fate’s constant involvement.
Strong and independent female lead characters are becoming more abundant, and I enjoyed reading how Melody’s determination to make her own choices actually backfires at first. Melody wants to be independent, but she has to learn how to also be wise and accept help. There has to be a balance, which is a painful lesson for Melody to learn. Also, if you want a happy ending, don’t read the epilogue – it’s just build up for another book.
Melody, Richard, her family, and her friends are English. Cameron, Elsie, and their family, friends, and servants are Scottish. The mature content rating is for alcohol use and kidnapping; the violence rating is for fistfighting and knife use.

I always wonder what I would do in a precarious situation. Because Melody refuses to enter an arranged marriage, and instead runs off to marry a footman and is cut off, she finds herself in crazy circumstances--over and over again. I can't blame her for wanting to take charge of her own future, but the challenges she encounters made my heart pound.

Although Melody wanted to control her own destiny, she seemed to have trouble deciding on what exactly she wanted. There was a bit of wishy-washiness, but nothing a little time, trouble, and growing up couldn't solve.

After escaping a threat once again, by jumping into a random carriage, a new risk arises...in the form of an attractive, attentive Scotsman. Be still my heart! Cameron is Scottish perfection (I listened to this and yes, delightful). He is a swoon-worthy hero for sure. I enjoyed Cam's interactions with Melody, and the relationship they each had with his sister.

Such a charming and sweet story!

I liked that melody was a strong willed character and that she was so determined to marry for love that she was willing to be disowned by her well off family to marry the footman Richard.
That’s not how the story goes of course. The unknown Scotsman, that Melody Foster’s father had arranged a marriage with for Melody does end up playing the part of rescuer, as Melody learns of Richard’s true intentions of using her for random to get her dowry to pay off debts.

Melody uses her strong will to learn trades beneath her station with the help of a former governess. She wants to be self sufficient and not be fooled again by her feelings.

Cameron, knows who melody is and the secret he keeps might prove to his undoing when he hires Melody to be a companion to his sister Elsie.

Elsie and Melody are fast friends. Confiding in each other. Elsie is waiting for her Mr. Anderson before they are married after he goes to India to make some money. The book ends, with a carriage pulling up and Mr. Anderson’s business partner getting out after a two year wait.

Lovely regency romance! Stone delivers exactly what is expected from a Regency Romance written in the 2020 decade - a determined, feisty heroine, a flawed but loving family of origin for the heroine, and a lovely growth arc for our main character!

I loved that the setting for a good portion of the book was Scotland! It’s not often I read a regency romance set in Scotland and it was such a refreshing change. I enjoyed that Melody held the view of Scotland that the English elite held at the time - that it was a backward, barbaric place - and her experience coming to realize she was wrong.

The hidden/mistake identity trope was utilized uniquely in this novel as well. I can’t say much without being spoiler-y, but I can say that I very much enjoyed it!

I’ll be reading more of Kate Stewart Stone’s work for sure!

Scotland’s Melody by Katie Stewart Stone

Are you ready for a new book boyfriend?? Because I guarantee Cameron makes the list. He’s all things swoony, sweet, and manly. And if it wasn’t obvious from the title, Scottish. Need I say more?

Well, I will anyway, because this book isn’t just about Cameron. It’s also about Melody, a girl so headstrong and independent she’s constantly getting herself into scraps. She’s a little bit infuriating at times but who isn’t. I think it makes Cameron love her all the more.

Cameron and Melody are so perfect for each other. Their meet cute is adorable and includes mistaken identity, damsel in distress, and humor. Cameron’s sister plays the part of meddlesome matchmaker and brings a whole new level of fun to the story.

Read it for:
🌹 The meet cute
🌹 Mistaken Identity
🌹 Scottish brogue
🌹 Family healing
🌹 Fantastic side characters
🌹 Clean, slow burn

Content: kidnapping, illness, family disownment
