Can a vampire hunter ever trust a vampire?

After years on the sidelines, Zack Wright is ready to prove he’s worthy of his family’s monster hunting legacy. He’s even got the details to the perfect first hunt. All he has to do is delete an email, kill a vampire, and join his family on the road.

Roger has survived his sire’s cruelty for three hundred years. He conspires with his closest allies to put an end to their torment. But one night in 1989, he falls into a magical coma. He wakes over thirty years later—with a hunter attempting to drive a stake into his heart.

Confused and weakened, Roger needs every advantage he can grasp. He offers Zack the opportunity to hunt his infamous sire. Taking down a legendary vampire would catapult Zack’s reputation and cement his place in the family legacy. However, to get close to their prey, Zack must learn how to be Roger’s pet. It’s supposed to be an act, but Roger is gorgeous, seductive, and genuinely caring.

Catching feelings wasn’t part of the plan. And despite the idyllic small town, someone keeps attempting to hunt the hunter. Can Zack learn to trust what should be his immortal enemy? Or will someone remove Roger’s new ally before they have a chance to bond?

Wrong Hunt is the first novel of a series featuring the same lead characters. Strap in for a slow burn enemies-to-lovers, a trauma-repressed vampire, a hunter who has his world turned upside down and shaken, and a supernatural LGBT+ utopia that’s unfortunately only on paper.

JS HARKER loves stories. She was one of those kids who always had a book in her hands and spent many hours adventuring with her siblings. These days she wanders into her imaginary worlds and conjures up tales of magic, passion, and happily-ever-afters. She currently lives in the part of the Midwest that makes Tatooine look interesting by comparison (not that she’s ever obsessively thought about becoming a Jedi or anything).

On the whole, this was a pretty entertaining read, and I enjoyed it. It had mean family, which I have such a weakness for - saddest boi zack being bullied by his mean family!! how dare

and then he finds out they're also terrible and judgey and he finds acceptance and niceness in the alleged enemy (vampire/supernaturals) and has to face the pull between being accepted (maybe) by his mean family and everything he's known, vs being accepted by actually nice people...such the best.

That part was actually pretty light - Zack didn't face a whole lot of tension accepting that his family sucked and the supernaturals were nice, especially because his family (especially brother!) were OTT Evils. I don't mind that though.

I liked that the romance and plot were well woven together, it never felt like one got in the way of the other. It also never felt choppy.

However! My one major gripe, that deducted half a star, and had me considering rounding down to 3 after enjoying this as a solid 4 star:

This is abruptly closed door. Like "slammed in your face" closed door. It doesn't fit. There's solid initial sexual encounters, and then abruptly nothing. Skip to morning. Skip to "we had tons of sex lol" ok?? show me!

This was especially egregious to me because of the loss of emotional intimacy. Zack has a lot of hangups and insecurity around sexual stuff, it's mentioned and carried through the whole book. It would have been the absolute best moment to see him being nervous and then Roger being accepting and sweet and caring!! But we skipped that. It felt like a really big loss in the story and the development of their relationship. >:(

This is also the beginning of a series, not really a cliffhanger ending. But clearly unfinished storylines, which is fine. I kinda guessed it would be.

Overall, this was a solid start, a nice read. Unfortunately it shorted itself in the emotional intimacy scenes and made me cranky. I'll probably still keep an eye out for the rest of the series.

A Joyfully Jay review.

3.75 stars

Wrong Hunt is the first book in J.S. Harker’s new Fang and Dagger series. I love an enemies to lovers story and this one has such a fun and clever set up. I enjoyed both the hunter versus vampire element, as well as the idea of Roger waking up having lost more than 30 years of time.

We meet Zack first and see how hard he is working to prove himself to his family. They are renowned hunters and it is their life’s work, spending all their time training and on missions. While Zack is just as skilled as the rest of them, and he zealously believes in the calling to kill evil supernaturals, his one past mistake means that no one trusts him now and they won’t let him come along on their hunts.

This story does resolve one of the main issues in terms of the current threat to the men, but the bigger picture question of who put Roger in the coma, as well as the pending takedown of Roger’s sire are still left open.

I liked a lot of things about this book: it’s an engaging take on the vampire/hunter enemies-to-lovers romance, and both Zack and Roger have some really compelling moments as characters. The paranormal world building is deftly done: there are layers of supernatural society and complexities and moral ambiguities and depth aplenty, something that Zack, brainwashed by his paramilitary family of hyper-violent, overzealous hunters, has to learn on the ground as his unconventional alliance with Roger begins to develop into something more. I adored Zack as a character: he’s smart, he’s thoughtful, he has a kind heart despite the gaslighting and emotional abuse his family have been subjecting him to for years. His interactions with them increasingly broke my heart, and I don’t wish any of them well. He and Roger, however, I definitely want to see succeed. There’s still plenty of intrigue and peril afoot for them. I definitely found the storyline easy to invest in, and I want to know what happens next (there’s more to come in this series, clearly, and a bit of a cliffhanger at the end of this book).

Wrong Hunt is the first book in the Fang and Dagger series. It’s a paranormal story. Zack is a vampire hunter, he lets a new vampire escape. When he fails he ends up being a researcher. He tries to redeem himself but things go wrong! I really loved Zack and Roger. Overall, a great story. I cannot wait to read more in the series.

WRONG HUNT was so much fun and I loved the tension between vampire Roger and vampire hunter Zack! They had great chemistry and Roger's flirty, charming, persona made him hard to resist for Zack even though Zack knew he shouldn't be falling for the enemy. Together they make a deal to kill an evil coven leader but that means Zack will have to pretend to be Roger's pet. Along the way, Zack learns things aren't quite what they seem and even humans can be monsters. Most of the book is setting up the beginning of their relationship and their plan to take out Seamus but there was some nice spice and a great look at vampire politics.

I really liked it the first time and as I got the second book, I had to re-read it. and it was again a joy to read

first review
I am really lucky at the moment as the last few books I read have been great.

This one is my first book by this author and after the rollercoaster I just went through, it won't be the last.
I enjoyed this slightly different view on the paranormal world and had fun reading the story.

At the heart of it are Roger and Zack, and both are fantastic characters as they are very complex and interesting to read
Especially Zack. He has to work through a lifetime of conditioning and has to find the confidence to trust himself and his decisions. I loved that he didn't wallow in his anger but tried to find the truth.

Roger is equally interesting, although we get only glimpses of his previous life. Can't wait to discover more about him.

The secondary characters compliment the story perfectly and I really hope some of them get their own story .... after Roger and Zack finish their adventure.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and recommend it fully for everyone who loves a good story and/or vampires.

An ARC was provided by GRR and I am happy to give my honest opinion

I enjoyed this book. It was a fun, interesting read. Good world building. I liked the dynamic between vampire Roger and hunter Zack. It was a very slow burn romance between them. As interesting as I found the story, the romance aspect felt secondary to the story itself. I was disappointed that we don't really get a full love scene from them and all the good stuff happens off-page. This is the first book I've read by this author, and I would read the next book. 4 stars.

This book took a little while to pick up the pace, but the main characters are compelling enough that they kept my attention. I absolutely love the in depth lore of Vampires here, which has some novel facets that really bring the story to life. The enemies-to-lovers trope mixes with the insta-lust trope, but in a way that felt authentic. Additionally, we have my favorite: dual 3rd-person POV, so nothing gets missed, which I ADORE. So although the story dragged for the first half and I almost set it down, I'm happy I stayed with it until the end. Although I'm not instantly racing to pick up book two.

Knowing what I know now about this book, would I still read it if I went back in time?
Sure!

See below for the four criteria I use to decide whether and when to read a book

CHARACTERS: Roger is fascinating as a vampire: older and powerful, but because he's been in a 30 year enchanted sleep, he's weak physically at the beginning and at the same time, struggling to come to grips with everything he doesn't know from the past 30 years, as well as enough undead trauma to truly make him a character worthy of my time and emotional attention. I absolutely loved the push/pull give/take of strength/vulnerability between Roger and Zack. Zack comes from a hunter family, knows how to hunt, but because of his compassion is blacklisted from going on hunts with his famous family. He grapples with the discrepancy between his own morals and the morals of his blood family. What exactly does it mean to be family? And then there are a host of supporting characters that are all lovely in their own right.

PLOT: The plot mainly focuses on hunter and vampire choosing to team up and fake a vampire/human pet relationship in order to get close to the oldest and evilest of the undead and Roger's sire so Zack can kill him. The reasons behind his evil and power are really fascinating so I won't spoil that here, but I love this bit of vampire lore for this world. They struggle to come together while also fighting against the mysterious person (or people?) who want them dead. Can they stay under the radar long enough to survive to put their plan into action?

EMOTIONAL INTENSITY: There is no good/bad here. Sometimes I just want a low-investment entertainment read whereas other times a high-stakes 'I need a therapist to recover' is what I need.

3:5/medium. The world is lush and the backstory brilliant. I think it was the slow-pacing that kept me from diving too deeply. But by the end the author really hits some deep themes, so it's not a beach read!

CATHARTIC FULFILLMENT: Is the emotional journey worth it? Do I finish this book feeling that I've crested the wave of the climactic moment and everything has been settled, leaving me settled and fulfilled?

95%. I was absolutely thrilled, again, that because of the dual-POV we didn't have to miss anything. This first novel wrapped up well, perhaps too well, seeing as I'm not instantly racing to read the next book. But I appreciated that they didn't make it through the ending unscathed and that we had some time to actually sit with the aftermath. I'm glad I read this one.

Wrong Hunt is entertaining enough and a solid series starter; I just couldn’t get into it. The set-up is good, and the concept of them coming up with a plan to take done the worst vamps in the country sounded great. . .except for how none of that happens in the book. They have a rough sketch of “get Zack in there to kill monsters with magic dagger”—the end. If there had been a few more scenes of strategizing, it wouldn’t have seem so repetitive as most of the interactions dealing with their goal is Roger trying to teach Zack protocols for vampire society and being pissed. Actually, Zack spends most of the time in the book pissed and popping off at Roger even in situations where it can get them killed.

Zack is cool-headed in a fight, but he’s a liability when he can’t stab something. h is portrayed as the intelligent one, the person in the family that plans the hunts; yet, he can’t keep his cool once? He can’t put a pin in it and wait till an opportune (and less dangerous time) to get answers? Though Roger doesn’t help since he doesn’t go over details with Zack beforehand, and after a while he should know Zack’s short fuse. When introduced to Zack, he's so desperate to be accepted by his family and constantly on the defensive from being beleaguered by his golden boy older brother, his true personality isn't shown. Maybe his more impetuous and easily angered side is part of his real personality and/or he's taking out his repressed anger on someone he can be mad at.

Despite being irritated by his constant lack of self-preservation, Zack’s an easy character to root for. He’s too kindhearted for his extremist family, and so used to being disparaged and unvalued he can’t see how skilled and great a person he is. It’s like all his family saw his kindness and targeted him relentlessly throughout his life, but he called it family bonding to get through it. He and Roger are both “sad [monsters] made of trauma”. Roger is definitely the calm to Zack’s storm. He’s had centuries of betrayals, danger and pain under his belt so he’s less invested in the emotional wtf of what happened to him and more focused on his original mission. Like Zack he’s too kindhearted for the family of monsters he’s been born into. Roger can see Zack’s strength and similarities in their situations, and Zack eventually comes to trust Roger.

Roger being left in Taliville is a blessing for him, but he and Zack’s presence in a supernatural community is almost too conveniently handled considering they have a Wright family hunter in their midst. There’s also some inconsistencies that are distracting, but overall the story is good. I like many of the secondary characters and Zack forming connections with some in the town which helps him accept the truth that has lived in the back of his mind—his families' extreme views are barbarous. While it's sad that I was more interested in some of the side characters than the MCs, hopefully, I’ll be more invested in Roger and Zack as a couple in the next book.

3.5 stars rounded up. Quite a pleasant surprise as this author was new to me.

I enjoyed the premise of the book quite a bit, with the hunters versus vampires set up handled quite well. Zack, the black sheep of his hunter family, takes it upon himself to handle a mission on his own. However, there turn out to be a few complications as Zack finds out that the world of the paranormal isn’t quite as black and white as he has been taught by his family, and finds himself in an alliance with Roger, a centuries old vampire, to bring down Seamus, a vampire kingpin.

The relationship between Zack and Roger is handled well, overall, with a slow burn relationship in the offing as Roger must “train” Zack to be a vampire pet in order for his plan to take down Seamus to work. These training sessions are part of a vampire society crash course that Zack embarks upon, with some interesting ideas brought forth by the author (even if they seem somewhat like a Victorian version of BDSM).

I thought there were a few inconsistencies here and there in the plot and characterizations that detracted a bit somewhat for me. For example, the sexual component of Zack and Roger’s relationship went from zero to sixty I thought, even though it’s been established that Zack, while not a virgin, hasn’t exactly had a great history sexually. There was a bit of a missed opportunity here, I thought, for a more romantic approach taken.

And the general setup with Zack being a hunter in a town full of vampires was both intriguing and confusing. While it’s shown that some of the vampires don’t mind Zack’s presence I had to ask myself why they let him stay there. Maybe there’s a reason for Nell (the head vamp in town) to let him be besides Roger’s plot against Seamus.

Despite those quibbles, I did find myself eagerly turning the pages in this story and wanted to know more about these characters. The story ended on a cliffhanger of sorts with the main story arc still being dealt with, but it’s a story I’ll be there for with the next installment.

Wrong Hunt is the first book in the Fang and Dagger series, and I was curious from the moment I stumbled upon the story. As someone who is always looking for new vampire reads – and someone who has a weakness for stories involving hunters – I went in with high hopes.

I will be entirely honest and say that I was a bit dubious when I started Wrong Hunt. The writing style felt a bit too chunky for me, and there were points when it did not flow as well as I’d hoped, yet the story had me hooked. In fact, I was so into the story I was able to overlook the fact that I did not love the writing style to the level I had hoped. With great characters and a story that contained so many intriguing elements, Wrong Hunt quickly became a story I could not put down. I was deeply invested in all the elements, desperate to see how everything would come together. While some elements were a little too easy for my linking, it did not distract from how addicted to the story I was. When I finished, I instantly found myself eager for the next book.

All in all, Wrong Hunt was a fun introduction to the Fang and Dagger series. With plenty more to explore in the world, I have high hopes for the future of the series.

What do you get when you put a snarky slightly insecure hunter with a 300 year old smexy dominant vamp?

One very entertaining tale guaranteed to leave you with a book hangover!

This is packed with humor, snark, suspense, mystery, sexual tension, action, twists, OMG moments that you won't see coming, betrayals, and more steamy smexy

This starts before the confusion begins and then wakes us up with no idea how we got where we are
That is most of the fun, to be honest
And the running plotline

Zack is just adorably naive and determined to prove his worth.
Sometimes he was quick to pick up the nuances but for the most part it took visuals
I just wanted to wrap him in bubble wrap
His family had my hackles up from the beginning. Just a bunch of know-it-alls who felt he was not quite up to par with the rest of them
They didn't know ZACK!

Roger awakens from a coma to find he has lost 3 decades and doesn't know how he got where he is.
He does however know that his plans have not changed
Especially now that he has a sidekick that makes his heart beat once again...
Among other things

This is the first in a series. It doesn't end on a cliffy more of a to be continued.
It is available in Kobo Plus

Left alone while his family goes on yet another monster hunt, Zack intercepts an email meant for his brother Cal. It's a single vampire kill in a small town. The vampire is harder to kill than Zack thought and he ends up a prisoner.
Roger partied hard one night in 1989. When he wakes up, it's 2021. Locked into his coffin for 32 years, he finds out he's no longer in Chicago, but Taliville, Tennessee. Luckily, the town is a safe haven for paranormals and the territory of his friend, Nell.
The dynamic between the two is a bit prickly as they form a reluctant truce. Roger wants to kill his sire and his sire's oldest fledgling, and Zack is all in. They go from enemies to allies to lovers towards the latter part of the story. When Zack is attacked by his brother, Roger realizes he has feelings for the mortal.
The author takes their time with the worldbuilding. The secondary characters are well developed. It is well written, but not really for me. I committed to an ARC of book two, but don't think I'll go any further after that. The story ends on a to be continued and maybe a tentative HFN.
I received an advance copy of this book and this is my honest review.

It's an overall nice book, but I'm not sure if it's for me. Not the worst vampire/hunter book I've read, but also one of those books where you have to be ready for every cliché possible. On the other hand, the idea that a single, young mortal hunter could ever overpower an old vampire in direct combat is so unbelievable.

Also, to me, the dynamic of a lovely old vampire falling in love with a young, confused post-teen in a dom-pet relationship is boring. And the overly erotic content throughout the entire book, plus the immature, juvenile, and over-responsive reactions of Zach, borders on teen softporn.

There are good things, though! The plot is believable, and the vampire society is interesting. There's action, but it's not one of those books with unbearable torture or excessively gory scenes.

Well, overall, it's not a bad book, but it's far from being my favorite. I'm a little curious about the sequel, but not sure if it's worth it. So, if you are looking for a plain MM vampire story, it's a good choice, but I would recommend lowering your expectations.

Great start to a series I will be continuing.

Love the world the author built for us filled with all kinds of supernaturals and covens and hunters and rules.

I liked both MCs, though Zack annoyed me at first. Once I got to know him and understand his backstory, he really grew on me.

I guess I felt the same about Roger. But again, once you learn how he got to where he was (even though we don’t know exactly how he got in the coffin) he really blossomed into a multi-dimensional character.

Both Zack and Roger come with a lot of past trauma. Zack from his blood relatives and Roger from his coven. Much of the backstory was really tragic and explained a lot about how each MC reacts to things.

This is a fun read that takes the classic vampire-hunter trope and twists it. The tension between Zack and Roger fills the story, along with their wit and charming interactions.
Zack, eager to step into his family's legacy, finds himself in over his head.
Roger, with his hidden layers and vulnerability, creates a dynamic about trust and redemption.
Harker's world-building grounds the supernatural in a small-town feel and adds depth. Watching the slow-burn romance unfold makes their eventual connection feel earned and satisfying. The hunt for Roger's sire and their personal growth increase the stakes. Each character's struggle to let down their guard is engaging and real.
Wrong Hunt blends urban fantasy and romance, setting up for more adventures in the series. It's a solid start that leaves you wanting more.

It took me a couple tries to really get into this book, and I wasn't sure I was going to finish, but I finally got to the end and found myself starting the next book. This one ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, and I found myself invested just enough to need to know what's going to happen. This particular book just seemed to move very slowly, and I found myself not always liking Zach very much. I mean, I understand he was raised by hunters to hate everything supernatural, but even when living among them, he still allows his prejudices to take control of his thoughts, and that just made me mad. I love so many of the other characters, and I almost wish we would be reading more about their stories next.

"Wrong Hunt" by JS Harker is an interesting mix of enemies to lovers. Zack Wright is trying to prove himself to his emotionally abusive family, and his target is Roger, a vampire just waking from a magical coma. They end up teaming up to take down Roger’s sire, leading to an unexpected partnership.

I enjoyed the slow-burn romance between Zack and Roger. Their evolving relationship added some nice tension and tenderness to the story.

However, some parts of the story felt a bit underdeveloped, and I found myself wanting more depth in certain areas. Overall, "Wrong Hunt" was an okay read—entertaining but not quite as gripping as I had hoped. If you enjoy supernatural romance with a mix of action, it’s worth checking out.

I enjoyed this entertaining vampire/hunter story. It mixes up the notion that all vampires are bad and all hunters are good. Hmm, not so fast. Zach has some things to learn about vampires and his family, and it's not all going to be what he expects. I enjoyed the world-building, action, and the characters of Zach and Roger. The romance left me wanting more heat. It's slow-burn, but with plenty of UST, then it kind of skips to 'after.' I would have liked more of the sexy acts. That said, I still enjoyed the story and will continue with future books, just maybe with a toned down expectation for on-page steam.

I received an ARC and am voluntarily leaving this honest review.

I accidentally pulled an all-nighter reading this. The lore and the characters and the world building was really great, and I liked the process of Zack's deconstruction and the tension between what he knows in his heart is right and his need for his family's approval. It also seemed like he'd never had real friends before (because oh my god, his family. His entire extended family!!!) so seeing him make real friends was lovely. Roger's backstory was also interesting, and I'd love to learn more about how he was made and his earlier years. I am about to hit the next book in the series though, so I'm quite excited for that!

I have read many books about vampires but I found this version by JS Harker to be a really interesting take on it with a complex vampire society. You start off feeling sorry for Zack as he is treated badly by his monster hunting family and Harker teases us with so many mysteries about monsters and monster hunters that you really can’t tell what is the truth in this volume of this series about the same characters. Harker makes this confusion very entertaining to follow and the slow burn between Zack and Roger is delightful. I’m hoping for great things from the rest of the series if this is how well it begins.

Zack Wright is the black sheep in a family of ruthless legendary monster hunters, after a slip up he lands himself in the path of a charming vampire with a dangerous mission that could benefit them both. Wrong Hunt's characters were so likable, my personal favourite minor characters were Blake and Josefine and I absolutely loved the small town setting combined with supernatural social etiquette and the chemistry between Roger and Zack. Overall, I'm intrigued to see where the story goes next and hoping for some of the Wrights (not Cal, never Cal) to have a redemption arc.

This is my first J.S. Harker book, and I want more! I really enjoyed this, so much that I'm itching to read the next one. I couldn't put this down. Unfortunately, life came and I was forced to put it down. There's a Supernatural/Buffy feel to it. A family hunts supernaturals, who they dub "monsters." Zack soon realizes that not all supernaturals are monsters, and maybe it's the people closest to him that are actually the monsters. I loved the characters and the plot of this story, and I'm excited to see where this goes.

"Wrong Hunt" is the awesome first part of Zack and Roger's story. They're both well-rounded, flawed characters that don't fit into the typical hunter/vampire clichés. The plot was great and I loved the bantering between the two MCs. On a side note, I also liked that the female side characters actually have personalities and are not just there as potential love interests or to cause drama between the MCs as in so many M/M books. I'm really looking forward to the second book.

This book was ok, but not totally my cup of tea. Zack was so ANGRY and while I get it, his family sucked, but it made for a super slow burn to his relationship with Roger. Since most of the rest of the book during the build-up was like the vampire society version of charm school, a little heat would have livened things up.
The story ends on a bit of a soft cliffhanger, with no resolution to the two main storylines.

This is the story of Zack and Roger. It is the first book in the Fang and Dagger series. The world created by this author is amazing and I love the unique spin on the vampire /hunter trope. The mystery and intrigue keeps you riveted. It is written wonderfully with beautiful complex characters. Can't wait to see what happens next. Definitely recommended.

I received this book as an Arc and I am happily reviewing it voluntarily.

This was a well-written and entertaining story. There is a soft cliffhanger at the end though.

Zack has a hard life and past and the story goes into detail about it. Roger’s past wasn’t as detailed as Zack’s but we do get to know a bit about his interesting past. I enjoyed watching Zack and Roger accept one another and grow together. I just wished there were more sexy times.

I’m interested to see if there will be more to this couple and will be reading the next book.

Loved Zack and Roger, both individually and together. Zack is interesting because he's flying blind here trying to prove something to his family of "monster hunters" but it turns out there's lots more to that story than he knows. Roger is also on the back foot as he's done a Rip Van Winkle and awakened to Zack trying to kill him. Watching these two form a partnership that deepens as time goes on made me very excited to read more in this series.
