Very boring as Ms Mason tried to make it unnecessary dramatic. You realize that H is very, very dumb and if not for his old servant, he'd be dead. h falls in love after some vigorous lovemaking and nothing else. Not a fan of the period to book was set in.

In this one, besides not developing the plot, both MCs suffer from lack of character development. The h starts off as a bratty chit who despises H for being a poor peasant. By the end, when H's titles and wealth is restored, we are yet to see her evolve into a more caring and compassionate personality towards others, especially her poor subjects. I loved my previous Mason books because the heroines were so feminine and sensitive towards others. H seems to regress as the book goes on.

Decided to pick up one of my dead tree books to read. Connie Mason was an old favorite and wanted an old historical. I can definitely say that reading this was an experience and it definitely reads differently at 47 versus me probably reading it in my early 20s. LOL

The heroine annoyed me with her constantly "I hate you" to the hero and all that jazz. "I wanted to marry the" other guy stuff too. Oh and then she finally runs away and is of course taken by the guy she was supposed to marry in the beginning and then only later realizes she was better off and safer, with the hero.

But ah, the hero. He was even worse with his constant belief that she continued to betray him, yet he loved her and wanted her any way. She was his, so that was something. Nor was he horrible to her even though he believed the worst.

On the plus side it did have one of my favorite tropes, pregnancy but we didn't get to see the baby be born even though she was pregnant through about half the book. I at least want to get my epilogue with babies!

We also had the heroine almost dying in the hero's arms trope as well. That always gets me. However, it wasn't enough to make me really love this book and want to hold it to my chest and squeal over it.

There also weren't many sweet moments between the two of them. That's what I like to read about now. I just want more of the sweet and loving moments between the hero and heroine. We really don't get that much in these old historical books. It's always fighting. And a word of warning that there is forced seduction in this book as well.

Anyway, I may keep this one because of the nice clinch cover.

First reaction? Shock!

This was the first book by author CM that I have read. I found it to be an enthralling read, and I didn't expect it to capture my intrigue the way it did.

Jaime is a character that I found interesting in the sense that he wasn't afraid to step into a challenge if it assisted him in his quest for revenge from a wrongful death of his father, and to regain what was rightfully his.

Lady Aleta sweeps into his life and changes his aspect of love, as he never expects to feel the emotions for a woman that he feels with Aleta. And so begins an adventurous drama filled steamy passion, lust, desire and love.

This story is worth wile delving into if you enjoy a typical historical romance with a sexy hero male figure (yum yum) and his love interest, adventure aplenty, and a villain with an added twist is thrown in to keep you intrigued till the end!!

This romance was just okay. I found the lack of communication between Jaime Mortimer and Lady Aleta Somerset to be beyond frustrating. Jaime's father had been accused of treason by the Greys and Aleta's father many years ago and was subsequently hanged. Jaime, the heir, was presumed dead and his estates were then given to the Greys and Somerset. However, Jaime was hiding in the ruins of one estate and acted as the "Lord of Darkness" to oversee lucrative smuggling operations. When he learns that Evan Grey is due to marry his betrothed (when they were children), he decides that the time is right to claim his bride.
Jaime implores Henry V to honor his betrothal contract and to look into the accusations of treason his father endured. Henry agrees to both and Jaime and Aleta are married right then. Both Lord Grey and Lord Somerset vow to retrieve her from what they perceive to be a sham marriage. At first, Aleta longs for the marriage to be annulled, but she starts to have feelings for Jaime. Their time in the bedroom is frequent and passionate. However, Jaime's scheming former mistress lives in his keep for some reason. She stirs up trouble quite frequently and both are hoodwinked by her. Also, Lord Grey continues his quest to get the marriage annulled and causes a rift between Jaime and Aleta.
I found it hard to believe how gullible the two of them were, especially Jaime. He chose not to believe his wife, whom he claimed to love. I kept rolling my eyes with how annoying they were. Also, the motive behind Lord Grey's hatred of Jaime did not make sense to me.

He rapes her repeatedly until eventually she likes it. This goes on for the longest. She is not likeable in the least. She doesn't want to be touched by someone beneath her. The characters aren't even truly in love because the author doesn't even give them personalities to even be believably in love. The guy only enjoys having sex with her and nothing else. He doesn't try to get to know her and neither she him. They just have sex all the time. There's nothing more to this.

Spoilerish:

After hearing a guy in this story raped a girl when she was 13 and he 15, after mistaking her for a peasant. The characters shrug and say like, "you can't fault him, he was just a young lad. He didn't know she was nobility. "

I usually love Connie Mason books, but this was a disappointment perhaps because it was an early one of her books.

It opens with a boy, Jaime Mortimer watching the hanging of his wrongly accused father, which leads the story into adult Jaime's quest for redemption of his father's estate and name, beginning with stealing the bride of his father's accuser. It was an interesting if disturbing opener. One thing about these characters who live for revenge - I have a hard time believing they can go on to be relatively happy characters after their quest has ceased, and Jaime is no exception.

Lady Aleta is spoiled and childish. While it made sense to me why she wanted to make a good marriage, given the time, she was a bit too over the top, in terms of her behavior. Why did Jaime fall in love with her rather than in lust? Their relationship changed too quickly with no real development. It seemed to all be based on lust.

The author spelled out things to the reader - things that were obvious enough already. The dialogue during the erotic scenes hovered over cheesy, and some things made no sense, such as how they are both still "soaking wet" on their arrival to Mortimer Manor after Aleta's near drowning, which seemed to take some time.

I could not get into Aleta's character at all - no emotional attachment there for me. Still, I was drawn to how this would play out. I liked that Aleta's father showed he was more dimensional than the typical evil villian, like Grey. Also, Jaime's father raping Evan's mother was a bit brushed aside.

This one gets a "meh" from me. It's Medieval, so that's a plus, though Mason doesn't seem to work too hard researching the periods she writes about. The situations are compelling, and the story is a good one. But the hero starts out being a jerk. He sorts himself out before the end, but the heroine falls in "wuv" with him long before he shows any character traits that should lead any self-respecting woman to care. Basically, she loves the good sex, and that's about it, and that, to me, is hard to respect. Again, by the end, I'm OK with the relationship, so it gets a few stars, but it could've been a much more powerful story. One heartfelt apology would've been nice.

Set in England, 1403 and a good historical romance. If I remember correctly, Aleta and Jaime were betrothed since...age 5. But, when Jaime's father is wrongly accused of treason, executed (horribly), Jamie's life takes a different path bent on revenge. It wasn't until he heard his "betrothed" was marrying that he goes to claim her. ;-)

This is a fast paced, good romantic historical book. I enjoyed it.

Plenty of action in this steamy historical romance that I basically enjoyed but the characters emotions were too extreme, they either hated or loved the other and constantly fluctuated. Jaime begins to avenge his fathers death by interrupting Aleta's marriage then marrying her himself.
