Guild Wars #3

Endless Night

Rate this book
In the aftermath of the Great Galactic War, the Veetanho assumed control of the Mercenary Guild’s Inner Council, and with it, power over the guild’s affairs. The Goltar were marginalized, and the Veetanho did everything they could to make the galaxy forget the Goltar had ever existed. The Goltar went quietly, pretending to sulk and accept their fate…but they never did. They worked in the shadows, amassing power and resources, always looking for the right time—and right opportunity—where they could re-emerge and strip the hated Veetanho of everything they owned. In the depths of the Spine Nebula—a fly-over region known only for the bad luck of its inhabitants and the dangers that lurks in its fringes—the Goltar have a secret weapon. Known only as the “Infinite Flow,” it’s the source of their riches, and the crux on which their plans rest. But when a shadowy group learns of its existence and comes to wrest control of it from the Goltar, the crew of the Midnight Sun is thrown into its defense, and they find out that they may not have known their employers quite as well as they thought they did. As the guild wars heat up, the battle for ultimate power may well be fought in the Spine Nebula…with the Midnight Sun Free Company in the middle of it!

The Midnight sun company is back! We had left them in pretty bad shape after their last mission.. another success, but which came at a heavy price… and we find them chafing at the bit and being at the door of their old hunting grounds the Spine Nebula.Branco is still in search of a cure and his only hope rests in a mysterious race known as the Wrogul and a mysterious world called Azure, (and yes, if you have read ALL the books before, it should connect some dots). There, their resident Jeha spy/engineer/mad scientist, Jenkins, falls in love with a fellow Jeha who gets abducted by bad guys from a group called Endless Night, the former enemies of the Midnight Sun sisters who run the outfit...At that point, Branco and Sun go follow Jenkins's love and meet an old friend of Sun's… And then… Then, READ THE BOOK!!!
I always find it rough to write a review and to avoid spoilers. This new installment in the adventures of the Midnight Sun company is interesting on many levels: we meet cherished characters yet again and follow them as they evolve (special mention to Betty and her quest for the Riderless Tort), we learn more about the Spine Nebula, we learn more about the Goltar, we learn more about the enmity between the Goltar, Goka and Veetanho,,, the story ties up well with the evolution of the main story line (i.e. very early in the book, we are at the end of Alabaster noon), as well as the other adventures of the Midnight Sun. There is lots of action, lots of laughter, lots of reflection, much exposition about the past and - potentially - the future of the Galactic Union and it ends up in a shocking revelation and some cliffhangers about the fate of one of our heroes.
Highly recommended, I had a blast reading it!

First off I'm a massive FHU fan and I did enjoy this book overall, however 3-stars means I've got some gripes.

I felt the book didn't flow as well as others in this series and that there's been quite a break since we last saw the Midnight Sun's - that made me think long and hard to remember the story. I found the romance between Sun & Branco to be unnecessary and overly drawn out (romance in an action sci-fi book is not something I enjoy). Then we have Blue, who is already quite bloodthirsty and never shies from a fight...but when she discovers what she's been inadvertently training for (the strike on the Veetanho homeworld), well she has some thoughts to the contrary - which seemed a little out of character (especially considering that the strike wouldn't really be such a bad thing IMO). The Goltar, well, in this book they're portrayed as more the enigmatic 'enemy' rather than saviour - personally I don't agree with that as methinks they should have been shown as more of the ally type (although not fully benevolent, since who really is?).

Nevertheless, after some betrayal, death, truces, super powerful device (that one could have seen what it's purpose was quite early in the book) and not too much mystery... we have our heroes running off to re-equip and return to fight for the system - I don't know how long the follow up to this is going to be but I'll likely forget most of "Endless Night" by then, I hope not though.

Very good but too convoluted.

While I found this book to be very entertaining, there just too many factions and too many plots to make sense as of. There were at least four opposing forces in play, with no good way to distinguish the "good guys" from the bad. The Humans even find themselves split between the various factions.
I really like these Guild Wars books but this was a little hard to follow.

Very disappointed

Most of the stories in the 4 H universe I thoroughly enjoy and often I can't put down. However, This particular book took me close to 3 weeks to complete, reading and completing 5 other books. This story did not have a clear flow, the battle/fight scenes were bad, was very confusing to follow, and I am not sure what the main plot was. Only my stubbornness let me finish this book. This added nothing to the 4 H universe. I would not recommend

Great science fiction adventure

Funny and intense with memorable characters you will root for and against.

Confident, experienced mercenaries, accustomed to the simple us against them binary of getting paid to kill, are thrust into a complex situation where identifying the enemy is almost as hard as facing them.

Wow

All you need to know with this series is that you are going to be entertained, a well written twisting plot, well developed charachters and action throughout! Drooling like a Zuul on a hot day for the next one!

Probably my least favorite of the 4HU continuing stories, to much voodoo and weirdness for me. This story was long and seemed to have two disconnected parts in which coincidence seem to slam the two parts back together at the end.

More great stuff in the 4HU

If you are a fan of the 4HU, this is the next in The Guild Wars and it is very well done. This is a true page turner for fans!

Good addition to series

Lots more info about the 4h universe and the source of the Goltars wealth. Cliffhanger at the end. Blurb was a bit misleading...

Hard To Read

I found the book the hardest to read so far in this series. Found myself just wanting to get to the damned end...

This one dragged a bit and seemed unfocused.
