NOT A CONTEST: How to Love Teaching, a Field Guide will help you bring out the best in your teaching.
This is a short read, but I couldn’t bring myself to finish it. As a teacher who began her teaching career during COVID, I can say that this job is not easy. My mental health has spiraled the last 3 years..and I thought (maybe it was my mistake) that this book would remind me of why teaching is a rewarding profession, and that my love for teaching would be ignited again. I was wrong..
The vibe I got from this author was “suck it up, stop complaining, and do your job right” absolutely no empathy whatsoever. She does not address the difficult parts of the job and how we can have a more positive mindset, she just explains why SHE was such a great teacher and why her “methods” are the best. Most of what I read and what she suggests is common sense and stuff I already knew.
A humble and empathetic approach to the “how-to” teaching guide. Louise does a wonderful job intertwining anecdotes and on the ground advice. A must read for any new teachers or any teachers who are struggling to remember the joys of the classroom.
