This is book four of the Lost Gorge Mystery series and centres around the small mining town of Lost Gorge and three main families of the area. In 1922 three men apparently filed a claim on a silver mine, Willy Ackerman, Ewan Orrick and Timothy Ferguson, but were all supposed to have been killed when their mine, the Lucky Star, collapsed sealing all three men inside. Many have tried to find the silver mine ever since, with more dying in the effort and eventually the main entrance to the mine was dynamited and the townsfolk kept the location of the entrance secret ever after. A hundred years later, Catherine Kessler, a history PhD student doing her dissertation on mining in the area, has been trying to question local families in the area, but found a lot of them refuse to even talk to her. She finally gets to talk to Liam Orrick, a local rancher whose family still live on the land where the mine is supposed to be, but has never been found. Rumours have been going around for a century, with the Ferguson descendants blaming the Ackerman family for everything that has happened to them ever since the mine collapsed. Both the Ferguson and Orrick families have suffered misfortune ever since, whilst the Ackerman family has flourished and owns most of the town. But while the Orrick and Ferguson families have expanded throughout the years since, the Ackerman’s have mostly died before their times, except for Ms Abigail Ackerman who is almost one hundred, and only has a couple of descendants left living at the start of the story. When Liam falls into a hole and discovers a shaft to the mine, whilst looking for a runaway cow, the news brings unwelcome visitors and also brings the old feuds between the families right back to the front of all minds. He takes Catherine up to the shaft and she goes straight in, having all the equipment with her to check the air quality and watch for any other dangers, but soon almost falls over a skeleton of one of the original dead miners, but also a more recent corpse that is about thirty years dead! They have to call in Sheriff Clint Gallagher, who took over a few years ago after a nasty set of incidents following a suicide connected to these three families. Relationships between the three families are still fraught to this day and the Orrick’s have had to sell off parcels of land repeatedly, just in order to keep their ranch going, but fortunately, still hold the title to the land where they found an access point to the old silver mine. Catherine had been following a series of murders at mines, all those years ago and was trying to find out the truth of who might have been behind it all back then. Liam would rather he had never found the shaft to begin with and kept quiet. But there are far more dangerous secrets to be uncovered and although Abigail gives Catherine permission to write up her family’s true history from her ancestor’s own journals she soon pulls the plug on that, as more dead bodies turn up and not those of the old miners! Descendants of the original miners seem to be getting picked off and blame is being placed on all the wrong people! Lots of twists and turns as the full mystery of what happened a hundred years ago, thirty years ago and in the present time as well, all gets revealed and the main characters come close to death a number of times. The true person(s) behind all the killings is finally worked out and the town will never be the same again, as an era of greed and power comes to an end. Definitely didn’t see it coming until the very last minute and surprised me completely! I can’t wait to read the next book by this author. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
This was a really interesting mystery about a silver mine that's been hidden for almost a hundred years. Liam Or rock is out chasing a cow when he falls into a hole that he thinks is the opening to the silver mine. Catherine Kessler is a history major getting ready to defend her thesis on mines. The only thing that would definitely prove her theory about the mines is finding the silver mine called the Lucky Star, which is the one that Liam has just found. She tells her professor that she needs more time to investigate the new discovery. There were several deaths before the mine was covered and lost. Three families have a complicated past and present. The twists and turns of this story kept me interested and I couldn't put it down. I borrowed this from Kindle Unlimited.
An interesting story line that will pull you in and keep you turning the pages. It's well written, flows smoothly from page to page and holds your attention. The characters are well developed making them easy to get to know throughout the story. Mystery and suspense will have you sitting on the edge of your seat at times.

was it truly an accidental cave in that killed and trapped the miners? or was an incredibly lethal curse at work - or perhaps efforts to limit the effects of the curse?
can a descendant and an historian conquer the curse or its antecedents in the past or present?
or are more doomed to die ?
intense drama across time.
