Eloise "Lucy" Bordeau has done everything to keep her parent's bookstore alive, even as her sister's ran from their hometown. She's given up everything, including herself, unable to let go, to chase her dreams too. A handsome stranger, like those in her books, seems like the perfect distraction, until she discovers who he really is. Ezra James holds the money she needs, but the contract he asks her to sign asks for more than interest in return.
"I’ve always heard the saying that there’s a thin line between love and hate. Those people never straddled the line between lust and disdain."
I devoured Hate Me and then I had to live in this uncomfortable feeling of knowing exactly what Eloise was feeling. She's been the rock, the foundation of her sister's lives, and yet she so desperately desires something more, something she won't speak of. One night with a handsome stranger turns into an arrangement she can't refuse, even if it leaves her questioning everything. Filled with secrets and shame, Eloise begins an affair with a man she knows she shouldn't, but she doesn't know the secret he too is keeping. The chemistry between these two is off the charts, I was not prepared for it, but I absolutely loved it.
“God, it’s so fucked up, but I want to be the first man to break your heart,” he murmurs.
Hate Me is novella two in the Summer of Secrets collection and, without hurting anyone's feelings, I will say it's my favorite. It's a sexy, quick read that somehow still made me cry. How is that even a thing? Cynthia brings to life the bookworm, her bookshop, and the take-control man that flips her world upside down. It's a story filled with the pushes and pulls of life, with lust, control, and independence. Eloise was such an interesting character, so perfectly middle sister, and these pages are her truths being revealed, just as Ezra takes the time to reveal her heart and soul.
Ez.Ra. Ezra. Yes. This is my first book by Cynthia and it won’t be my last. I have been anxiously awaiting this trio of books and it didn’t disappoint. This book started out reminding me of You’ve Got Mail, minus the mail, adding in the contract fulfillment. Then it took multiple turns. This book was written like a poem. The characters, so flawed, yet so beautiful. Let’s talk about Ezra though, because I don’t want to let him go. His love, lust, longing for Lucy jumped off the pages. Being there for Lucy’s journey of self realization was amazing as well. She felt stuck, had big hopes and even bigger dreams but had to manage her family’s bookstore because there was no one else. It’s hard to ask for help, I’m glad in the end she realized there is more to life than what she was living. Bonus points for the enemies to lovers (hot lovers, I may add).
Finishing a great book is always so bittersweet to me! I love a male character who knows exactly what he wants and Ezra...wants Eloise!
" I was good at being alone until the day I walked into a struggling bookstore and saw a beautiful woman sitting there, as if she'd been waiting for me"
I loved the reverse dynamic between these characters. Eloise is a headstrong, strong female character . She knows exactly who she is and holds nothing back except her feelings for Ezra. The chemistry between these characters is so strong that it can literally be felt through the pages.
I loved reading a happy male character and a broody brilliant female characters. Rodriguez once again out did herself in writing characters who are so relatable, in writing a story we didn't see coming! I know I probably say this everytime but I think this is my favourite book in the guiding series. The chemistry never felt flat, the characters were so well written and the story felt so personal.
Um... wow. Can’t believe I’ve been sleeping on this author. She is 🔥 bringer of the angst!
Eloise was so prickly. Love that in a female lead! And Ezra was HAWT. Oh lort *fans self*
I am torn between reading Sophie’s story or picking up more of this author’s work! If this is what a novella is like, I can only imagine what she can do with more words! 😅
Eloise, the grumpy bookstore owner, is about to have her world rocked. A mysterious stranger walks into her shop, and bam, sparks fly. But this isn't your average meet-cute. Turns out, the hottie is actually trying to buy her bookstore!
The tension is palpable as the lines between business and pleasure blur. Will Eloise let this guy have his way, or will she fight for her shop and her heart?
If you're into steamy romances with a side of corporate intrigue, this book is for you. Just be prepared for a rollercoaster ride of emotions and some seriously hot scenes.
The Guiding Series holds a special place in my heart... and Eloise is no different. She's bold while insecure and scared. She's cautious and realistic. She's a romantic at heart but doesn't trust easily. Ezra is everything she doesn't even know she needs. He is the epitome of the perfect book boyfriend and you'll fall in love right from the very first time you meet him. Rodriguez adds another powerful book to this series that will have you swooning the entire time. Its a "reverse grumpy-sunshine" that will have you laughing and hurting for both Eloise and Ezra! Her words are magical. Do not pass on this beauty.
Eloise and Ezra's story is absolutely one of my favorites in the Guiding series. Their attraction is palpable and the chemistry between them is undeniably riveting. Cynthia Rodriguez is a prolific writer and I always look forward to reading more from her!
I wanted to review these three books together not because they're all in the same mini-series or because they're all set in the same summer or they all have the same sisters involved within them. But because even though they have a lot of similarities, they have so many more differences that really stuck out to me. So instead of breaking them all out, I wanted to include them in one post.
Each story has heartbreak, but each story displays it differently. One is emotional, one is intense, one is electrifying. Each story has a male lead and a female lead but while you are reading these, none of those leads are the same as another. One sister, is not like the other. One male, is definitely not like the other. They're all so different and distinct and I think I loved that the most about these three stories. Yeah, we have three books about three sisters and one summer but wow, who knew how different their journey's could all be.
Jen's book, Teach Me had so much emotion packed into such a short novella. It was poetic and it was melancholy heave for me. Cynthia's book, Hate Me packed so much tension that I could barely stand it any longer. If it was a longer book, I just know I would have combusted internally from all of the emotional and sexual tension. And Christina's book Ruin Me... was electrifying. Christina has some of the most powerful, jarring writing that I have had the pleasure of reading.
I hope you all enjoy the journey these three women took us on. It's quite different than anything else you might ever read from them. But in the best way possible. Indulge. Treat yourself. Explore and love the ride they take you on.
This book had me from the moment a man named Ezra James walked into the bookstore store of Eloise “Lucy” Bordeau. Eloise is this sweet force of power that battles the kind strength of Ezra in such a way that you will not be able to put this book down until you finish the last word. She is fierce and independent and he is persistent and successful and it’s a combination that’s explosive.
Cynthia has outdone herself with her summer of secrets. She shows us that while there are times to be stoic and hold things together, like Lucy does, you still have to chase your dreams, you have to believe in possibilities and believe in the love your sisters have given, believe in the passion of a stranger. Hate Me is more about learning to forgive.
Update: The more you read this book and yes, I have read it a few times now, the more you feel the vulnerability these two have and these two fight not to show. Ezra is the epitome of a man in control but when Eloise works her way into his world he looses ever sense of it. As for Eloise, she has to look like she has control, she has had to be this way for longer than any would like to be, she has to not risk loosing all she gave up for, but one look at Ezra and the risk is worth it all. The fight they give one another is more a battle of wills than another other fight you can have.
As I mentioned before this is Cynthia at her finest, the lust and love, the push and pull and always the fight and surrender that she give us. I dare you not to fall in love with it.
“I am a woman, standing in a downpour, celebrating the fact that she’s forgotten her umbrella.”
Full of enchanting prose, intensity, and instant attraction (with a dash of loathing), the second part of this series is a delicious mixture of romance and eloquence.
Eloise—or Lucy, to most—is a smart and pensive character, woven with regret and longing.
After sacrificing her own dreams in exchange for her sisters’ freedom, she’s remained stagnant; stuck in the same small town with the same nickname, known as the girl she’s still trying to evolve from.
We quickly learn that her responsibilities and choices have come with an array of consequences, of which she chooses to deal with alone, and internally. As a result, malice often comes out in place of the melancholy.
But when an attractive stranger walks into the family bookstore she’s run by herself for years, something overtakes her, and the normally curt and reserved Eloise becomes a woman she could admire in more ways than one.
The story then unfolds in a way that is both charming and unconventional. You will root for her, and her own dreams, as Ezra becomes more than a man, but a symbol of the possibilities that exist beyond her sheltered life.
I have only ever read one other novel by Cynthia and this was very different but I loved it all the same.
Let me just say that the lust and sexual tension just jumps off the pages in this novella and I loved every moment of it.
After a lose the turns the life Lucy and her sisters knew upside down she is left being the “responsible, bitchy” sister and doing what she needs to do to keep her mothers dream alive. She has accepted the role that she had been placed in, never letting people in, keeping put in her small town.
Enter Ezra! He completely shakes up her life. She has an instant attraction to this man (I think most readers did as well ;) ) when her walks into her bookstore, an attraction that can’t be denied, although she try’s to resists every chance she can.
I found this story more fast paced then the other two novellas (Ruin Me and Teach Me) but this story grabs your attention from the beginning and holds on until the last word.
Thank you to Cynthia A Rodriguez for providing me with an arc.
I absolutely loved Another Sky and still plan on going back and reading the others in this series but this one was a tiny bit of a let down. This book is slight rivals to lovers and forced proximity and it just didn’t work for me.
Eloise is trying to keep her family bookstore afloat after her parents left it to her in their will. When her romance life gets flipped upside down by a man who gives her a night to remember, she doesn’t expect him to walk in the next day trying to buy her store. He offers her a deal to keep the story if she agrees to a contract to spend time with him and a game of truth or dare for the summer. He is desperate to keep her in his life after a taste but she just wants to keep her family store open.
I didn’t believe the progression of the romance in this one. It didn’t feel like it had enough development and felt like she kinda was forced into it. She eventually comes around to a relationship but it is after he forces her into a contract that she truly couldn’t have said no to and it felt forced. She wasn’t into it most of the time and when she is open to a relationship it didn’t feel like we say she fully got there in her story arc it felt like a random progression instead of seeing her slowly come around to it. He felt very forceful at times and it didn’t work for me.
I am sad this one didn’t work for me but I did still enjoy Cynthia’s writing so I will read more from her. This one just wasn’t for me.
Thank you so much for trusting me with another ARC 🥹🖤
No amount of words is enough for me to describe how much I loved this book. Sometimes, you need the right person to help you realize that you're worthy of loving and that they're not going anywhere, and Ezra was that person for Eloise. The way they spoke to each other, their passion, the way Ezra remained patient and kept coming back to Eloise...I loved the whole thing. Out of all the books in this series, this one is my favorite 🥹
🖤 Small Town Romance 🖤 Grumpy x Sunshine 🖤 He Falls First 🖤 Dual POV 🖤 Billionaire MMC 🖤 Bookstore Owner FMC
With the first book in the series being such a disappointment, I was hoping this book would redeem itself. I was wrong. Hate Me follows Lucy or Eloise (what is with the two names thing? It’s just confusing) as she manages the bookstore her mum left her when she was young. After her parents died while she was young. Having to take care of her sister while she was young. You get the point.
Enter a handsome (debatable) stranger willing to help her with all her problems. But will Lucy be able to let him or will she be too stubborn to let the man crack her walls?
I was not a big fan of Lucy (Eloise) she was stubborn to the point of being annoying. She complained more than anything, just like her younger sister. And although it has been years since her parents deaths you can tell she is still not over it, taking it out on her older sister Sophie instead. I did not enjoy the insta love in this book which shocked me because I love some good insta love. This one just led to the characters having sex and thinking they are in love by the end of the book.
Ezra was cocky to the point where I wanted to punch him in the face. He wasn’t likeable and clearly pushed Lucy, thinking it was what she wanted. He was pushy and very controlling and was not at all likeable.

Hate Me is the second novella in The Summer Of Secrets book with 3 stories about 3 sisters during one summer. Eloise Bordeau, the middle child, has been left behind by her two sisters running her family's book store and taking care of everything at home while her oldest and youngest sisters are off running from something or trying to discover themselves. Meanwhile Eloise (Lucy) is stuck in their sleepy beach hometown not able to live out her dreams. Her sisters return to "help" for the summer, but the secrets they hold from each other just may be their undoing. Luckily, in walks Ezra and instaLust ensues. From the moment they meet in the bookstore, Ezra and Eloise are a dang fire waiting to combust. They are so hot, with a side of cold from Eloise trying to fight the attraction that is so prevalent in each of their scenes together. It drips from the page. Their story is one of instant chemistry with a side of a deal and learning to discover what they want out of life. Again, this is my first book by Cynthia Rodriguez, but I'll be back for more of her words. A great book to end the summer reads on.
Is a cute summer read. It’s about lust at first sight and surrendering to your feelings. It’s about letting go and giving in.
This book is a little bit different from what I am used to of Cynthia, but she never fails me. I really enjoyed this book. The back and forth between Eloise and Ezra was everything. I loved the bitchy side to Eloise, her inability to show her vulnerability because she’s been burned too many times. Like i’ve said many times before, when a female character is likable to me the book is already off to a great start. I like them being kickass and when they take no bullshit. Eloise is just that. It’s Ezra job to get through her barrier and it’s hers to let him in.
"His eyes say hello. His mouth says I'm trouble. My brain doesn't give a damn."
I just finished reading #HateMe by Cynthia A. Rodriguez and holy sh*t, this story started with a bang. 😉 I am totally blown away by this novella. I wish it were longer!! 😍 An instant attraction between these two. This novelella is - intense, so much intensity. This novella is sexy and delicious. The romance. ❤ Ezra makes me melt, especially with his words, he's hot! There was tension and sexual chemistry. Even though Eloise wanted to so badly hate Ezra James, she just couldn't. Their sexual chemistry/intensity is pure, pure fire. Hot damn! 🔥I'm honestly sad as shit that I've finished reading this story. I need more Ezra and Eloise!! I loved reading about Cynthia's filthy little babes! 🔥 📚 😍 ❤
Good Gawd. This story. The chemistry between Ezra and Eloise.. off the charts. This couple just oozes the epitome of sexiness. I loved Eloise. Loved. Her. Ezra was like a breath of fresh air from all the stories about men who treat women badly, yet the women keep running back. I wish this was a full length story and not a novella, only because I'm greedy for more of their story. This never felt like a novella. All the little details and nuances were there. It never felt rushed. Cynthia took her time to, somehow, create a slow burn in a limited time (which is crazy because... well... read it and you'll understand).
This is story #2 in the Summer of Secrets trilogy of novellas. It can be read as a standalone, but you'll appreciate it all as a whole if you read all 3.
“‘Are you trying to bait me? To get me to come here to scream at you?’ I ask him. ‘I’d like you to scream, but not in frustration.’”
I couldn’t help but almost spit my coffee as I was reading this far later into the night than I should have been while knowing I had to get up the next morning to get children ready for school but I couldn’t help myself. This scene among others had me laughing and sometimes all but throwing my phone. Everything about this was such a great read.

Oh my I devored this one, my heart hurt for Eloise the choices she made ripping her apart from the inside out with so much hurt and strength also until the beautiful man Ezra walks threw those doors of the bookstore and sees what nobody else sees and plucks at her bit by bit. This was intense and emotional and the raw feelings gah!!! The character development is outstanding and I truly loved them.
This is the kind of sexual tension dreams are made of! Lucy and Ezra were a treat from the moment he walked into her bookstore. I stayed up reading this because there was no way I was putting it down. This is the second book of Cynthia’s I have read and her books just punch me in the feels and I love it! I want to be friends with all her characters!
what's in the water in their town? all 3 sisters getting dicked down within the same summer.
hate me had more drama than ruin me more of an external conflict and more of an internal conflict when it came to ezra and his penis. i'm enjoying these. this one was very sexy and all in good fun with a good dose of drama.
No matter what this author writes she blows me away with her ability to turn simple words into beautiful poetry. This genre is not a normal pick for me but I think I could read a shopping list from her and enjoy it. Look forward to reading the other two stories in this series.
"His eyes say hello. His mouth says I'm trouble. My brain doesn't give a damn."
That quote honestly sets the entire tone for this book for me! Ezra is just so hot, and I was melting quite a few times throughout the novella. Short and fun read!
What is NOT to like about a story that has a bookstore scene in it!?! The chemistry between these two characters not only made you pay attention but it felt like it was the real deal. This was another new to me author and I cant believe I havent read her before now.
