Toes up in the Tulips

Rate this book
Riches to rags. ... Time heals all wounds, ... but old deeds still haunt, ... even for the innocent!

After helping the captain solve his long overdue case, Doreen’s reputation is well and truly cemented in Kelowna. That’s proven out when a young woman is murdered in her own apartment, and the police start looking at the boyfriend. With the town on edge, this young man seeks out Doreen’s help to prove his innocence.

Corporal Mack Moreau is back to light duty work—mostly keeping an eye on Doreen, if the captain has any say in it. It’s hardly a hardship, as he loves being around her, when she’s not dipping her toes in his active cases. And yet somehow she manages to find old cases that dovetail with his ongoing ones, giving her an exaggerated opinion of where her boundaries are.

What seems simple on the surface goes back into history to a case that was done and dusted, with the killer now out free, looking for revenge. But, of course, it’s not that simple or that easy; and, by the time Doreen and her animal crew are done, the world has shifted for more than just one person in this case.

Another fun adventure with Doreen and Mack and the animals. This time a not so cold case lease to a cold case. The boyfriend of the current victim asks Doreen for help finding the killer but so does the released killer of the victim’s brother who was just released after serving time. There’s matchmaking, an estranged husband still trying to manipulate Doreen, but it’s nice to see her finally getting a backbone especially knowing that Mack, Nick and Nan has her back!!
The relationship with Mack is slowly progressing. With Mack understanding her reticence and being patient and willing to wait for her to work through things in her time.

Can’t wait for the next one v

This is the twentieth book in Dale Mayer's wonderful "Lovely Lethal Gardens" series, each book as good as the last.
Doreen Montgomery was gaining quite a reputation as an amateur sleuth, managing to find solutions to most things that she got her teeth into, her long suffering boyfriend, Corporal Mack Moreau of the Kelowna PD, tries his best to rein her in without much success, their compromise is that she is allowed to investigate cold cases as long as she steers clear of his current cases, this doesn't always work as they sometimes interact, as with Mack's latest case.
A beautiful, much loved young florist had been murdered, at first it seemed obvious who the killer was but like every other crime in Kelowna, it was more complicated than it seemed.
Doreen managed to tie it in with a crime committed many years ago and, being Doreen, she took that as a go ahead to start asking questions in her own inimitable way, stirring a can of worms as she did so.
This story has all the elements of the previous books, Doreen's menagerie of much loved animals, devoted Mack waiting patiently in the wings for Doreen's divorce to come through and trying his best to keep her out of trouble, of often hilarious nan and all the quirky residents at Rosemoor retirement home, all these kooky characters make these cosy mysteries a delight to read........a whodunit with humour.

Doreen now has an established reputation for solving cold cases and after a young woman is found murdered in her apartment the boyfriend comes to her asking for help to solve the case and clear his name. Doreen knows that she cannot look at active cases and as corporal Mack Moreau is back to only light duty work he has the time to make sure she does not cross that line although she often manages to find old cases that dovetail with his ongoing ones, giving her an exaggerated opinion of where her boundaries are. This case which appeared simple in fact crosses with an old case which was considered complete with the killer already free. By the time Doreen has worked it all out the word has changed for more than one person.

I enjoyed this story with the mystery of the current case and the old case all connected by the same people. I enjoyed Doreen's empathy for many of them and that she is now more cautious about who she backs and why. I loved that she had tried to stop one of the people from making the same mistake as before. Another case was solved by Doreen and yet another time when her animal friends have a part in saving her life too. Easy to read, feel and understand. I can't wait to find out what happens in her next case and whether she and Mack are both free to get any closer together.

What appears on the surface to be a completely open and shut case certainly doesn't end that way once Doreen becomes involved. With it being an open Mack case she is supposed to stay away, but she is asked to help clear a name. Twisted, intriguing and mysterious with several possible bad guys and a possible connection to something from the past. With animals in tow she criss crosses all over town to solve this one. With things also hotting up slightly with Mack, life is good, but her ex is still trying to cause trouble and they have family pushing them to take things further, she still wants her marriage ended before going all in. I love this couple and the animals they always make me smile, Mack is patient and supportive even when she messes with his cases, I think he respects her for her stand in not making them intimate or moving to fast until she is completely free. But deep down they both know just how close they are and how much each cares for the other. The quirkiness of the animals being with her everywhere just really adds to the enjoyment of this series, I sink in and just absorb each one, soak them up and store the memories until the next one. I often reccomend this series as a change of pace for readers who just need something new and different. So good I never like them ending.

This was definitely a quirky whodunit with Doreen and all of her probing questions at the forefront again. I liked the way the current case tied into a past case.

The regular cast of characters showed up along with Doreen's trio of animals. One other thing I liked about the case she solved was there were a number of truly unpleasant people in the book. It threw me off about the identity of the killer because Doreen had to question them and I could easily see any one of them being the guilty party.

Often, I am not sure of the culprit, but this time I had 2 suspects in mind. I gave up on one early on because it seemed too obvious to settle on that person. I couldn't figure out how the other person tied into the case, but there waa no real surprise there.

Doreen and Mack's extremely slow burn romance was still extremely slow. I thought it was interesting that Doreen's hopefully soon to be ex husband made an appearance and seemed to be rather insistent.

This was not a quick read for me, but it was a decent mystery. I am looking forward to the next book in the series. I am still playing catch up with the previous books.

I got quite the kick out of the beginning of this book as Doreen claims Toes Up in the Tulips as her new case, even though it's the latest case on Mack's plate.

In an interesting twist, a young man, Joseph Moody approaches her for help. It appears he's the boyfriend of the deceased in Mack's latest case and want her help proving he's innocent. Knowing Mack would be upset she calls him, but he has to call her back, and when she hesitates, he announces he's coming over.

To top it off, she calls back an unknown number, only to find it's her ex. So, she has to call Nick.

This case gets pretty tangled right from the start with both Doreen and Mack investigating from different angles.

I love Thaddeous, Goliath and Mugs so very much, their antics are perfect. Nan also adds her two cents into things and well, it's good to see Mack and Doreen's relationship is stable while waiting on the divorce.

The case goes off into several different directions, making me wonder which way it will end up.

I love this series and can't wait for the next book!

This is the 20th book in the Lovely Lethal Gardens. The two main characters are Doreen met Mack. They met when Doreen moved to town and have been friends ever since. Mack is a member of the local police department and Doreen is known as the crazy woman with a dog, cat and parakeet that solves cold cases. Doreen and Mack have an agreement, Doreen can work on cold cases while she stays out of Mack’s active cases. As the series has progressed, Mack and Doreen have worked together to solve cases as the active and cold cases seem to be entwined. The best part of the book are the main characters. I love the way they talk and joke with each other. Also, it’s fun watching the matchmaking and waiting until they take their relationship to the next level. I look forward to each book in the series.

I was delighted to read about Doreeing and her friends!
Contrary to the usual storyline, In Toes Up In The Tulips, Doreen is involved in an open police case, causing disappointment and worry to her beau, corporal Mack Moureau, an active police officer.
Doreen's spirited personality dominates the story, brightened by a colorful and lively cast of characters, which include her irresistible menagerie of pets.
Overall, Toes Up In The Tulips is entertaining and pleasant to read.
Seeing Doreen's personality evolve, overcome past issues, and change into an open-minded, bright, and independent woman is rewarding for those who have read the previous episodes.
On another note, Doreen's neverending divorce proceedings and the consequent stall of her relationship with Mack are getting a bit old; I guess we'll have to wait until letter "Z," or the end of the series, to see new developments.

I loved reading Toes up in the Tulips . This story is sensational . In this 20th story in the lovely lethal garden series we find corporal Mack Moreau and Doreen growing closer but waiting for her divorce to be finalized .
She isn't comfortable moving their relationship forward till then . When a woman is killed her boyfriend asks for Doreen's help clearing his name . Doreen soon finds herself knee deep involved . The case is tied to an older case . Doreen and her animals with the help of Mack try to catch the killer and solve the older case . This story is full of intrigue and suspense and it's very entertaining . I highly recommend taking the time to read .

Doreen is quite the character still solving crimes with her 3 pet companions who have personalities of their own and are quite the protective lot. Although I'd like her to be a bit more humble, Doreen is a force unto her own and lovable just the same. Mack, her friend is quite tolerant of this inquisitive lady as she solves crimes one after another much to his dismay and delight since he is attached to the police department. Especially fun as I know these characters and have followed them for a while now and will continue to do so as I really enjoy their tales and antics. Each book can be read alone but I'm happy to follow them as they find their way through life.

This series gets better with each book. I think that's because we watch the characters grow, we are invested in them. This time Doreen is asked to prove innocence in a new ongoing case. While digging she finds connections to an old case. She does her best to assist and stay out of Mack's way. We know how well that works :) Things are slowly changing with Mack and Doreen. Now everyone is putting their two cents in. As Doreen trys to decipher whats going on she get's herself in a little trouble. Nothing the zoo crew can't handle! I am looking forward to the new one, Uzi in the Urn. Thank you for the arc. I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions. #toesupinthetulips #lovelylethalgardens #dalemayer #valleypublishltd #booksprout

This one is not really a cold case per se, it's connected to the active murder case, so it's a little bit complicated and definitely add more headache to Corporal Mack, kinda predictable and lots of repetition, but it doesn't take away all the fun, the highlight is the sleuthing that Doreen did and all the interaction between Doreen and everyone and the adorable behaviour of Doreen's fur babies. I'm soooooo invested in Doreen's life by now, I root for her happy ending with Mack and I'm so happy in this book the relationship between Mack and Doreen is growing more and more, they're just so perfect.

If you're looking cozy mystery read with unique adorable animals and romance, you should check this series.

My how I laughed when Doreen was telling Mack about what the name of her next case should be and what a coink-e-dink Mack just happens to have a case involving tulips! I love how Doreen is getting much more respect for what she does as well as that finally some money is on it's way from selling some of the stuff in the house but even so Mack is looking out for her. As always Doreen gets herself into some dicey situations while trying to unravel the murder which has some good twists and surprises while Doreen also tries to not get on Macks bad side with what she is doing (good luck with that)
Is it wrong I am starting to panic that we are up to U next!!.

I must be adicted

I'm ready for the plot to change somehow My husband and I started the series for free, then it was a $1.99, then $2.99, then $3.99 now I think it's up to $6.99. I think it's time for the author to give us a break on the original mystery. Doreen is still saddled with her husband, Has no money and no idea when it's coming, And is still still hanging in limbo all the time solving crimes In her new hometown. I want some resolution in some of the original areas. The mysteries are interesting but Doreen's life mystery is why I look forward to reading this series. I am paved enough that this time actually counted how many times The other use the word "winced" -- Just like in college when we count how many times the professor would say "uh".

This is the twentieth book in the Lovely Lethal Garden series. Doreen is becoming more confident and is standing up for herself despite her fear of Matthew. She is no longer letting him bully her and refers him to Nick, her lawyer.

Mack’s current case deals with the death of a young florist that works from home. Doreen’s tie-in is the request from the current boyfriend and the young man just released from prison asking her to find the killer. Doreen discovers the florist’s brother was killed 8 years ago. She investigates to see if these crimes are connected.

I enjoyed the mystery and Doreen’s insistence on helping the ex-con. Looking forward to the next installment. Hopefully, the divorce is resolved soon.

The narrator did a wonderful job with this audio book.

Doreen is on a break after her last cold case, gets some good hews, still waiting on her divorce and wanting to move into a relationship with Mac but can not till she is free. With everyone telling her something is wrong with Mac, she goes straight to him and asks. She's even trying to get his brother home for his Mum but things have just started for Mac a new murder which Doreen trys to stay out of but is linked to an old closed cases that brings more and more questions which Doreen tackles. Again working together they get their answers, a closed murder case and the truth of the cold case.

Twentieth book in this fun series and another great read The inimitable Doreen has promised her love Mack that she won't interfere with his current cases with the understanding that she can work cold cases and she is very good at solving those. Thee only problem is that Mack's current case a murder of a popular local florist links back to a cold case and Doreen sees that as her chance to get involved. We have the usual fun times with Doreen's Nan her crazy animals. throughout it all we have the slow burn romance between Mack and Doreen as they wait for her divorce to come through before they act on their love. All together a great read that is a wonderful change of pace

Toes Up in the Tulips by Dale Mayer
Lovely Lethal Gardens Series Book Twenty
Doreen is stepping on Mack’s toes in this book. He has an active case, which she is only supposed to help on cold cases, but what else can she do when one of the suspects comes to her for help? He wants her to help prove his innocence.
As always, she meets interesting people along the way. Most of them enjoy her pets, but some don’t. Especially the bad guys who end up with Goliath’s claws in their bodies, Mugs’ teeth, and Thaddeus either hitting them with his beak or something else.

This mystery involves the murder of a young woman in her apartment surrounded by plastic tulips. It's up to Mack to solve this crime and warns Doreen to stay out of his case. The problem is the murdered woman's boyfriend asks Doreen to prove he is innocent.

Doreen soon connects Mack's case with a kind of cold case of the victim's brother who was shot by accident but someone confessed and that someone spent eight years in jail for a crime he did not commit. Can Doreen stay out of Mack's way long enough to solve both crimes?

Another excellent entry for this series that I just can't get enough of. Once again, Doreen is on the case but this time there is a very intriguing twist right from the start. The writing is smart, the story engaging, and the mystery will keep you guessing. Of course, Doreen's menagerie of wonderful pets is around for the assist, as is the always chuckle inducing Nan and the often put upon Corporal Mack Moreau. Doreen and Mack are slowly inching closer together and it is always exciting to see what will develop as far as their relationship goes. I am electing to post a forthright review.

This is such a great series that I'm always thrilled when a new book comes out with a great cast of characters and a well-crafted mystery that kept me totally immersed in all that was happening from start to finish. I love Doreen Montgomery, gardener and amateur sleuth who catches murderers and solves crimes in Kelowna, British Columbia. I just wish her relationship with Corporal Mack Moreau would move along a bit faster. I received an advance reader copy of Toes Up in the Tulips and am voluntarily leaving my review,

Wow! Dale has done it again. This case was a current case so Doreen was not supposed to get involved but yet she did. It seems like everyone was a little off in the beginning and Nan definitely notices. As the case progresses, it becomes confusing but Doreen seems to get to the bottom of the case. I love that Doreen's and Mack's relationship seems to be progressing quite nicely. Always love seeing the animals too. FANTASTIC job Dale! I would highly recommend this book! Can't wait for the next book!

The way Doreen was feeding the info to the guilty party at the end did seem a bit like entrapment. When Doreen and Mack were talking about what she could do with the money from the books they never mentioned furniture. She has never replaced any of the furniture sent to auction, her living/front room and bedroom are bare. I'm not even sure she has a bed frame and is not still sleeping on mattress/box springs on the floor. And what was the comment about her pacing around her small living room? That room is not supposed to be small. The continuity is this episode really was not up to par.

Doreen steps in deep into Mack's active investigation when a young woman is found murdered. In her defense it does lead back to a long ago murder. Her and Mack field questions from friends and family about their status and Mathew is mad about the pending divorce. Just another day for Doreen and her rag tag crew. Love this series and hope the author finds a way to continue it after the alphabet is finished as it is by far my favorite. I volunteered to read this book via booksprout.

I can’t believe we’re up to book #20 in this wonderful series. I don’t want to the letter z.
Doreen and kooky menagerie are on another case and it’s active. Is it connected to an older case? I love how she chats to people and finds more information than the police do.
The banter she has with Mack and her Nan, not to mention her pets keep me chuckling through the series. I had no clue whodunnit which was awesome.
Fantastic story, I highly recommend this series.

I laughed my tush off all through this story! Doreen is at it again when a nice young woman is murdered in her apartment. Her partner was cleared because he was "at work". Mack tells Doreen to stay out of it but an 8-year-old accidental killing is like a magnet. This story has action and romance, ending with a cliffhanger. Very highly recommended.

This charming series just keeps me coming back again and again. Doreen and her menagerie of pet detectives are consistent in their search of justice. And Mack is consistent in his efforts to keep Doreen safe. Nan and her friends at Rosemoor are hilarious and true to life. Back to anxiously waiting for the next book. 🙂.

Book 20 in the Lovely Lethal series and each one as good as the first. Doreen continues her super sleuthing with her menagerie of animals, keeping Mack on his toes, with regular characters popping in. With a new murder to solve, there’s plenty of humour and mystery to keep it a page-turner. A must read!
