In a race against time, Lincoln's prime objective is to discover the killer's identity before Miss Rhodes becomes the next victim...
My love of reading began early, cultivated by my grandmother. I cut my teeth on the works of Louis L'Amour. Then my curiosity for other genres blossomed, and I spent any free time I had in the library. The stories took me away from the farm, and the small town I lived in, to a world so vast, that I felt I could achieve anything.
My imagination has always been vivid, and my grandparents encouraged me to write down the stories I regaled them with. I have never felt more alive than when I'm immersed in a new tale, as it takes form.
5 big stars!! This story has everything! There’s a murder of a beloved grandfather in Harlow, Kansas. A granddaughter who returns home to handle his affairs, get him buried, and to help find the killer. A Sheriff who is determined to find the killer also.. he was a neighbor and friend to the grandfather. Everyone is convinced it was a local who was the killer. But was it? There are quite a few more characters, good ones, bad ones.. all wonderfully developed! There is a love story.. I just loved it! Thank you to the author, Kimber Silver.. a Goodreads friend, for the opportunity to read her first novel! Amazing work, Kimber! Keep on writing!
This book had a lot of elements I look for in a story. A murder mystery, a steamy romance, a handsome cop who happens to be friends with the victim, and a family member who returns to town after a long absence and is looking for answers. Is it a local to blame, as everyone seems to think, or is something more sinister afoot in Harlow, Kansas?
I liked the way the author dealt with and wrote about the two main characters' connections in the past and how they have to work together to solve a case that means a lot to them both and how they have to learn to be able to trust one another.
This was a very edge-of-your-seat and suspenseful tale that had an unexpected twist I did not see coming. The characters were relatable, some you love and some you love to hate. The dialogue between characters was realistic and well done and the book will appeal to many many different types of readers. What an amazing debut by a very talented author. I hope there is a sequel as I'd like to see what happens to Kinsley and Lincoln next.
5 stars for the perfectly balanced novel that is beautifully written with wonderful imagery, a story that is suspenseful and immersive for the murder mystery at its core, and with a touching little love story to combine all the best of ingredients for a debut novel.
Absorbing, engrossing but so compelling because the characters actually felt real. The atmosphere created around this small town was authentic, and the story itself was entirely believable. What more could you ask for?
The Plot
Kinsley Rhodes is forced to return to her hometown in Harlow with the mysterious death of her grandfather. A place Kinsley wanted to distance herself from because of the terrible memories it stores for her personally. Although, it is not just the murder and Kinsley’s past that harbours secrets. Every small town seems to have them, and no one is offering them up willingly to solve the murder.
The romance between Sheriff Lincoln James was a little predictable but non the less exciting. I love the stories that build the chemistry over time – but not too slowly, and this delivered.
Review and Comments
Like many others on GR, I too was anxious about reading this novel because Kimber is a treasured GR friend and one in contact with many readers. So, it is a pleasure for me to say that I loved her book.
The standout for me is the writing style. I loved the descriptive prose, the way the scenes and surroundings were depicted, and the way the mood was created for all different elements of the story to flourish. The beauty is, Kimber captured the mood from the opening page, and I immediately knew I was going to enjoy it, and so I breathed a sigh of relief.
My reading didn’t possess a single eye roll because everything felt real, authentic, and compelling. The blend of mystery, family drama and a cheeky little love story made this a wonderful book to read with the right pacing, and fusion of past and present storylines.
At 4.5 stars of course I am rounding up and wouldn't hesitate in reading another book from this author.
I read the second half of this novel in one session, sitting in the garden, enjoying the hint of spring (Southern Hemisphere) and using it as an excuse to ignore the weeding etc.
This is a great read. Kimber Silver knows how to set the scene and allow the reader to enter inside it.
There’s nothing too deep, no hidden meanings or symbolism that I could detect, and thank goodness for that!
This is a ‘who dunnit’, with splashes of raunchy romance that is a joy to read.
Gripping, snappy plot and relatable characters – people with ‘character’ and grunt, cowboy-hat-wearing police officers and don’t-mess-with-me female leads.
The best Feminine/Masculine energy-balanced novel of the year….. …..a combination of ‘Woman’s Fiction’-and ‘Guy-Swag-Dude’ power with lotsa charming “I’ll fill ‘em full of lead” apple-knocker-hick-town-Kansas talk. “The lady folks are nervous as cats on a hot tin roof”. ….oh yeah, and it’s a mystery murder crime novel that takes place in Harlow, Kansas…. ….with a deliciously developed ‘sarcasm-to-swooning’ budding ‘luv’ relationship. ….in a small backwoods town where everybody knows everybody… And…. ….Townspeople gossip spreads like wildfires. But…. ….Warm laughs eased tensions.
Kinsley (computer goddess and “All claws and spittin’ fire) knew her grandfather better than anyone. If something seemed out of place, she might know.
Lincoln, (divorce with one adopted son), the town deputy, lived next store to Henry. Lincoln was friends with Henry. He wanted to find the bastard who murdered Henry as much as anyone.
So…. Sheriff Lincoln James and Kinsley (‘City’) began working together— ….of course steamy desires were festering - yet real respect was growing organically together, too.
There was a scene where Lincoln and Kensley took Henry’s ashes to the farm together — it turned into one of those ‘nails-on-the chalkboard’ moments— as in: …..”He loves me” …..”He doesn’t love me” ……”He loves”… ……”He doesn’t”…. ….hmmm??
….when Kinsley first met Lincoln she thought he was a pompous ass… Lincoln couldn’t fool me. He was simply turned on by Kinsley’s ruthless aloofness and her pretty face from the get go.
I bet “dollars ta doughnuts” every guy and gal will be tremendously entertained — with: …the witty dialogue, …the humor, …the visual setting experience and …the heart-endearing characters.
Kimber balances the urgency to solve a crime with some painful past history. Healing is happening just through the process of living.
Besides being a very satisfying-‘to-sink-into’-novel… I was moved by the subtle messages of growing harmony. I’m left with the reminder that even in the midst of loss and grief, there can be levity and love.
Congratulations Kimber!! I’m sooo proud of you! I LOVED YOUR BOOK!! ‘Viva-la-melty’ loved it!! ….sorry I discovered it so late. Your book is the ‘real deal’ —it has everything readers could ever want from great storytelling fiction. ❤️
I cannot begin to tell you how grateful I am for my Goodreads friends. Because of the talented author, Kevin Ansbro, (if you haven’t read his books, yet, I highly recommend them), I was lucky enough to be introduced to this amazing author, Kimber Silver and her book. I also appreciate that we are now Goodreads friends, as well.
And…Kimber Silver was kind enough to gift this book to my Little Free Library Shed with no expectations that I review it.
And…Being a lover of mysteries, it was only natural that I would want to read it first before sharing it with the neighborhood.
So…How can I not tell you about my reading experience with her book?
It begins with the discovery of a body.
And…From that moment on, there is no way any reader wants to put this book down.
So…Let’s take a trip to Harlow, Kansas and find out about this story.
Kinsley Rhodes was raised by her grandfather in Harlow, Kansas. And the minute she had the opportunity to leave town, she did.
But…When her grandfather was so viciously murdered, she had to come back to find out who would do this to him. She is wound tight, not liked, but assisted by the popular, but underfunded Sheriff Lincoln James who her grandfather trusted.
As the Sheriff delves into the murder, Kinsley insists on being part of the investigation, too.
Soon…Kinsley begins to thaw towards the Sheriff and their work together unravels a town of deep secrets and corruption.
And…Their chemistry towards each other starts to grow.
With many twists and turns, questions arise…
Who wanted her grandfather dead and why?
What happened to Kinsley in her past?
Will they be able to capture the culprit or culprits before Kinsley becomes another victim?
With… Well-drawn, richly developed characters, Silver takes readers on a quick-paced, suspense-filled journey that has readers turning pages…
And rewarded with…A satisfying conclusion.
For mystery lovers, who enjoy a little bit of romance and small-town drama, I recommend this book highly.
This story is brilliantly laid out, captivating, compelling and engaging. I was immediately taken in by the richness of the story, the characters, the scenery and emotion. Readers will be transported to Kinsley's world, and want answers, too.
I want to thank the author, Kimber Silver for this complimentary book for our Little Free Library Shed.
And… Even though there was no expectation to review this book, I am delighted for the opportunity to provide an honest one.
“Wide-open spaces revealed little towns miles away, their lights glinting like rubies and pearls. Kansas held a subtle beauty that only a quiet eye could see”
Kinsley’s grandfather has been murdered and she is looking for answers. Expressing the ugliness of the human heart and the sufferance of the innocent, this story touches on perfection by drinking deeply from the well of Kansan culture.
Unlike most crime writers, this highly-talented author has employed a fierce degree of creative clarity to sketch the urgency of a criminal investigation and one man’s journey into a walled human heart. Author Kimber Silver has taken great care to keep readers from becoming oblivious to human sentiments in a story of a shocking murder and some troubling stories from one woman's past. The research into local law enforcement, I must say, is first-rate! And in the middle of this is a very endearing character: Lincoln James —-a consummate sheriff, a Marlboro Man figure, a good father, a joker, and above all, a gentleman!
Three things are impossible to miss—> the author’s creative brilliance, which infiltrates each and every line, the meteoric surprises, and the moments of pure comedy that overturn the seriousness of one’s day. (I laughed so much at some of the scenes I cannot even begin to explain)
This book was a pure joy to read and the ending caught me by the throat! I earnestly request you to pick up this enrapturing debut!
Gripping, tense and full of secrets. Broken Rhodes tells the story of murder, greed, love, and secrets.
Kinsley Rhodes's beloved grandfather, Henry has been brutally murdered and she returns to her hometown of Harlow, Kansas to settle his affairs. She has beautiful memories of her time with her grandfather, but the town also holds horrible memories of being bullied as a teen and a traumatic event that has affected her life. Small towns have memories, and no one wants to let her remember her past (or just how small minded they are).
Soon after arriving in town, Kinsley meets Sheriff Lincoln James who is tasked with finding his friend Henry’s killer, while keeping an eye of Kinsley.
Tensions run deep as does the gossip line. Old rivalries, power-hungry bullies, greed, gossip, deep rooted secrets, friendship, romance, and a desire for land flow throughout this hard to put down book.
Kimber Silver has crafted a well thought out and perfectly paced book with both likeable and unlikeable characters. I rooted for some and enjoyed booing and hissing at others. I didn't figure out whodunit but enjoyed lining up my suspects all the same.
This was a gripping and hard to put down debut book and I hope Silver has more book ideas up her sleeve as I look forward to reading more of her books in the future.
I love when a new author writes a really fine story.
A young woman's grandfather has been brutally murdered and his granddaughter Kinsley Rhodes is determined to find the murderer. Aided by the sheriff Lincoln James, they initially develop a tense relationship, for Kinsley has had a traumatic time with some of the people of the town Lincoln represents.
Eventually, they decide to work together and find the perpetrator who killed the grandfather, Henry Rhodes, who raised and loved Kinsley. Along the way, they fall in love with one another, and Lincoln realizes the danger that Kinsley is in. However, Kinsley is no novice when it comes to protecting herself packing a pistol and a knife for her protection.
As the story emerges, we learn of the secrets of the town and Kinsley's trauma are revealed. The town is a place where gossip flows like water and a reputation can be sullied in a minute. There is a sinister undercurrent running through this small town and both the sheriff, his staff, and Kinsley are determined to rid this town of its corruption.
This book is told in a straightforward manner, which I so enjoy bearing no messages and is just plain story telling. It's engaging and keeps the action flowing from the very start to its end. Definitely one to read when you need a well done story.
Harmony Kimber Silver's Broken Rhodes is a masterful debut that stands out in the crowded mystery genre, not just for its compelling central crime but for its expertly balanced narrative. While the title suggests a singular focus on Kinsley Rhodes and her journey back to her hometown, the heart of the novel is shared equally with Sheriff Lincoln James. Kimber weaves their stories together with such finesse that the reader becomes invested in both their individual struggles and their intertwined pursuit of justice. This isn't just Kinsley's story of uncovering the truth about her grandfather's murder; it's also Lincoln's story of confronting challenges that threaten to dismantle the very town he's sworn to protect. Their shared limelight makes the eventual resolution feel earned and deeply authentic, creating a dynamic that elevates the book beyond a simple whodunit.
The terrific plotting and intimate look into the minds of both protagonists is where Kimber truly excels. We feel Kinsley's vulnerability and her fierce determination to honour her grandfather's memory, while also experiencing Lincoln's quiet strength as he faces off against shadowy opposition. The plot builds a complex tapestry of secrets, showing how their pasts connect and how their present decisions ripple through the small town of Harlow in Kansas. This narrative choice prevents either character from becoming a mere plot device for the other. Instead, they are two fully realised individuals whose personal growth is just as crucial to the story as their collaborative effort to bring a killer to justice. The result is a richer, more satisfying reading experience where the stakes feel genuinely high for both Kinsley and Lincoln.
Broken Rhodes is a testament to the power of character-driven storytelling and a great plot, earning five stars. Kimber’s writing is evocative and heartfelt, painting a vivid picture of a town with its own unique atmosphere. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and have already read the second one, as I couldn’t put it down.
I have been a fan of ardent reader/passionate writer Kimber Silver since I discovered her short stories on social media. It was such a thrill to find out she has written a novel, and after reading Broken Rhodes, I’m even more impressed by her writing skills.
Set in a small town in rural Kansas, the novel centers around the murder of Kinsley Rhodes’s beloved grandfather, Henry Rhodes. The horrific event forces her to go back to a place where she was mocked and assaulted in the worst possible way. What she went through as a teen has scarred her for life; it also has forced her to erect an impenetrable wall around herself. Away from the horrors of her youth, she has become a very capable woman who knows how to take care of herself. Naturally, she is very cautious about who she befriends and who she will trust.
Coming back to Harlow unleashes all the terrible memories of a time she has tried so hard to forget. Having to face the monsters who savagely assaulted her, knowing they were never held accountable for what they did to her, is like another dagger to her ravaged heart.
To her surprise, Kinsley finds a strong ally in Sheriff Lincoln James, though it takes a while before he can get Kinsley to see him that way. Together they gather evidence they hope will lead to the monster who killed Henry Rhodes, while sidestepping plots to discredit and destroy them both. This is a fast-paced, action-filled suspense, that also takes the reader inside the lives of the two main characters, showing us the events that have made them who they are.
5 big, shiny stars for this debut novel by author, Kimber Silver! As soon as I began reading Broken Rhodes I was immediately hooked. I read Broken Rhodes in two sittings. It was so hard to put it down once I started reading it. Broken Rhodes was so well written and the choice of most of the characters was so satisfying. Of course, there were a few that I found very toxic. Broken Rhodes took place in a small town in rural Kansas called Harlow. It was a town where everyone knew everyone, many of its residents had been living there for decades and gossip had a way of traveling around the town in record speed. Crime was at a minimum until one of Harlow’s residents was found murdered.
Kinsley Rhodes had been brought up in Harlow, Kansas by her beloved grandfather. She was sadly forced to return to Harlow when she learned about her grandfather’s murder. Henry Rhodes was the only family Kinsley had. Her grandfather had been her support system, her devoted cheerleader and the most important person in Kinsley’s life. Now he was gone. Kinsley wanted answers. Who could have murdered her grandfather? Henry Rhodes had been a kind and caring man. He didn’t have a bad bone in his body. As far as Kinsley knew, her grandfather did not have an enemy in the world except maybe for the members of one particular family.
It was always hard for Kinsley to return to Harlow. She had been bullied throughout her childhood but one particular incident left a permanent mark on Kinsley. That incident dictated how Kinsley led her life from that point on. All she wanted to do when she arrived in Harlow was meet with Sheriff Lincoln James to get answers about her grandfather’s murder. Kinsley had arrived earlier than expected in Harlow so the sheriff was not available to meet with her. When Kinsley and Sheriff Lincoln James finally met, Kinsley’s first impression of Sheriff Lincoln James was not very favorable. Over time, Kinsley and Lincoln got over their initial reactions of each other and agreed to work together ro try and find her grandfather’s murderer. Lincoln believed that Kinsley’s grandfather was murdered by someone who lived locally. Slowly, a beautiful and tender romance developed between Kinsley and Lincoln that was believable and full of passion and hope.
Broken Rhodes was a brilliant suspenseful murder mystery. I was so surprised to discover that this was Kimber Silver’s debut book. Broken Rhodes far surpassed my expectations in every way. Kimber Silver not only succeeded in writing a perfectly paced, thought provoking, and well executed novel but one that was immersed with secrets, a well crafted twist and lots of edge of your seat moments. I adored Kinsley’s and Lincoln’s characters. By the time I finished reading Broken Rhodes I felt like the characters in Broken Rhodes were long time friends. I felt their pain, hope, sadness, curiosity, anger, fear, confusion and anger. Kinsley’s relationship with Lincoln’s son, Thomas, was genuinely one that was built upon respect, trust and love. I had not guessed the ending before it was revealed and found it very satisfying. It is my hope that Kimber Silver continues to write more books about Lincoln, Kinsley and the residents of Harlow, Kansas. It would make a great series. I am a big fan and highly recommend this book.
Thank you again to Kimber Silver for providing me with a complimentary copy of Broken Rhodes in exchange for a honest review.
Kimber came out with a page turner of a debut! It is filled with spicy adventure and deftly drawn characters that I wanted to boo and hiss and I can’t forget the ones I could just kick in the shins! But ,then she reaches into my heart and has me cheering for the wronged and innocent and the lovers. Oh, did I mention .. there IS a love story.
It all begins in a small Kansas town with a discovery of a dead body of a beloved grandfather and the return of his granddaughter. Years of old secrets abound waiting to be unearthed and my detective brain was going gang busters from page one almost to the very end trying to follow all of the clues.
I will tell you this, it is one that is hard to put down. In fact, Broken Rhodes will keep your mind churning, your detective skills sharp, your heart cheering, and most of all... it will leave you filled in anticipation to see just what Kimber Silvers has in store for us in the future- Congrats, Kimber! What a debut!
I was really in the mood to read a mystery and I am glad to say this book delivered.
Small town Kansas, secrets and traumas from the past, a present day murder, some likeable and unlikeable characters and some romance! What more can you ask for from a book?
The author has created a memorable character in Kinsley Rhodes- a woman who is scarred from her past in this town, a woman who has learned to cloister herself against further trauma. She arrives back in Harlow after her grandfather has been murdered. Everyone liked her grandfather, so who would want to kill him? Very angry and defensive at first, it takes her a while to warm up to the Sheriff, Lincoln. Together, they try and solve this murder. But it seems, Kingsley is in danger as well!
Damn! This is one fine debut, it’s not often an author has a first novel that is as slick as anything the big names can throw out there, I was very impressed by every aspect of this story. What I was also impressed with was that a couple of years ago I did an interview with Silver, and she took enough away from that to be able to base Sheriff Lincoln on me. Hehe!
Right from the start the book reminded me a bit of Jane Harper’s The Dry, you had a murder in a farming town, you could sense how hot the place was and it involved somebody coming back who had a dark past with the town, but where The Dry was full of plot holes and weak writing, Broken Rhodes got it right every step of the way and soon left Harper in its dust. It wasn’t until I finished the book that I realised that the writing reminded of another book, In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, I got that same satisfied feeling of being taken through a murder case, knowing everybody inside and out, and everything tying up perfectly. The Book starts off with a murder being discovered and case is slowly solved as Kinsley Rhodes’s past is gradually revealed, what we get is two stories carefully weaved together to create a proper good whodunnit. And as for whodunnit, I am usually pretty good as guessing these and was very close this time.
I liked how realistic the case being solved was, Lincoln has a large number of suspects, you see him interviewing and only getting little bits of info to add to the case and he gets frustrated with the lack of progress, seeing as this was the town’s first murder, I think Silver got this spot on, too many books will make solving the case look too easy. The characters Silver has created are fantastic, those who are good are loveable and those on the bad side are of the type you want to yank out of the pages and give a right good thump. Kinsley is our main character, she is one kick ass woman, a couple of fight scenes and she becomes almost feral, and the attacker stands no chance, as the trauma she has suffered in the past is revealed you understand why she is so tough.
This is one fine novel and I’m really looking forward to what Silver gives us next….and looking forward to being cast as Lincoln in the movie adaptation. Fan of crime novels? Then give this one a go.
Years of merciless high school bullying culminate in a night so traumatic and humiliating that Kinsley Rhodes flees her doting grandfather in Harlow and starts a new life in Kansas City. Eight years later, she is compelled to return to ‘redneck hell’, when her grandfather, Henry, is murdered.
High school friends, Dusty and Gabby, welcome Kinsley home, but tormentors from her past and secrets from Henry’s soon rear their ugly heads.
Sheriff Lincoln James, a good friend and neighbour to Henry, is determined to find the murderer(s), and Kinsley knows she can help. Working together isn’t easy: his machismo exasperates her, and he feels he’s trying to tame a bobcat, all claws and spittin’ fire. But solving the crime draws them together, and a mutual attraction ensues.
Kimber has fine-tuned her writing skills, producing an array of short stories. She was clearly primed to take on a full-length novel. Vivid description is slipped in beautifully between the dialogue and action: ‘The woman’s beady eyes peered over the top of her wireframe glasses… A vision of curt efficiency in her orthopaedic shoes, the librarian led Kinsley to the furthest room at the back of the library. She gave a firm warning to put everything away before disappearing between the stack, leaving a vapor trail of eau de menthol in her wake.’
The burgeoning romance between Kinsley and Lincoln entwines itself agreeably around the unearthing of Henry’s killer(s), making this the perfect book for murder-mystery and romance fans.
Kimber carries us through a gripping tale at a steady pace with impressive writing. A hugely satisfying read that not only leaves me anxiously awaiting her next novel but wanting to download the country music tracks of Leon Boss.
“Good Lord, I am back in redneck hell,” realizes Kinsley Rhodes, when she first returns to her hometown of Harlow, Kansas to attend her grandfather’s funeral. The author perfectly captures small town life from Pearl’s Diner to the local liquor store – busy before noon. Kinsley is a tough-minded, young professional woman in her mid-20s. She soon meets Lincoln, the town sheriff and “Marlboro Man lookalike.” We discover her grandfather, Henry, had been murdered. Also, something bad had happened to Kinsley as a teen, which has resulted in her being standoffish – particularly with men. While readers find out in doses what Kinsley had endured, Silver deftly manages to keep the mystery of her grandfather’s murder throughout.
Silver’s characterizations of the various locals are amazing, as depicted in their conversations, as well as in her vivid descriptions of their dress and behavior. In discussing the murder, Jack Levine, a farmer, typifies the colorful colloquial speech of the locals: “S’pose there’ll be lotsa talk. The lady folk are nervous as cats on a hot tin roof.”
It’s not easy for Kinsley to adjust to being back in Harlow. She snipes at Lincoln who expects her to cook for him (or so she thinks): “Oh, I do apologize! I forgot I’m back in good ol’ boy country.” Despite her coolness, Lincoln’s wildly attracted to Kinsley and can’t help but show it. At first, she’s put off by his “brazen familiarity.” Her anger toward him keeps her sadness over the loss of her grandfather at bay, but Kinsley soon realizes her attraction. It isn’t long before she looks forward to spending time with him – even cooking for him. While Lincoln has a macho side, he’s so much more; while Kinsley’s a cool badass – she’s so much more. Her inner strength and determination (fostered from the love of her grandfather and Leon, popular musician and dear family friend) helped get her through a particularly troubled past.
Kimber Silver’s ability to express the complexity of the two major characters makes this book a thoroughly compelling one. Her writing is magical: she causes the electrical charge between Kinsley and Lincoln to jump right off the page! Propelled by their original anger over the killer on the loose, as well as their attraction for each other, they work together on the case like two well-suited detectives.
The town is curiously silent; no one seems to know who could have committed the crime. It isn’t long before we realize that Kinsley is in danger. She had made more than one enemy before she originally moved away. How is it possible—given what she’s experienced—to wind up having both grit and compassion?
Minor characters—both good and evil—add much to the tale-telling. While not all are suspects, the author gives us just enough for us to come up with a list of possible ones. The ending was a total surprise. In fact, there’s more than one surprise in store. Not wanting to give any spoilers, suffice to say, this page-turner was one of the best I’ve ever read! BROKEN RHODES is both beautifully written and engaging. I can’t wait for Kimber Silver’s next title!
Okay, I really loved this novel! Life is a bit chaotic for me at the moment but more detailed review to come soon!
10/8/2022: Okay, I can finally sit down down and expand upon my earlier review. Thanks to Kimber Silver for a print copy of her book! I thoroughly enjoyed this engrossing and exciting novel. Kinsley Rhodes is quite the character! And when she meets Sheriff Lincoln James things just get better. I don't like to give too much of a synopsis of the plot when I review books so I encourage you to pick up this book and know you will have a great time. What pleasantly surprised me is how the writing took me to Harlow, Kansas and to the people living there. I've never been to that part of the world and I'm glad I had the chance to experience it reading this novel.
Great writing, compelling story, and I look forward to reading Kimber Silver's next one. Highly recommended!
This is a well-written, entertaining, romantic suspense novel. It has a likable, intelligent, strong and capable female protagonist, an engaging male protagonist, small town charm, family secrets, murder, mystery, wit, a touch of humor, appealing banter, a heartwarming romance, and a satisfying conclusion. I received a gift of this delightful book from the author. This is my honest opinion.
Broken Rhodes is a seriously impressive debut novel. Kimber Silver’s writing style is that of a more experienced scribe. The setting feels real, the characters live and breathe, the dialogue never feels false and the plot zips along at an entertaining pace. The ending is action-packed and satisfying. I was never bored, that’s for sure. I even got Stephen King-type vibes on occasion (this book is not horror, but there is a palpable sense of menace at times).
My only complaints were the slightly fetishistic way the two leads talked about their guns at one point (it felt a little creepy to me but perhaps that was just my British anti-gun sensibilities at work) and the stereotypical Italian restaurant owner (who spoke exactly like Luigi from The Simpsons) but he was only in it for about two pages, so this is nitpicking, really.
Overall, I really enjoyed my trip along these Broken Rhodes and will definitely be reading more books from this author as and when she writes them.
When I opened this book I became a temporary inhabitant of Harlow, Kansas. I met so many people there. Some good and some very, very bad. First time author @kimbersilver does an excellent job painting the picture of small town corruption as well as a tender love story.
If you visit Harlow, you will meet Kingsley who left this small town years ago to get away from a traumatic experience in her life. She is back now because her beloved grandfather, Henry Rhodes, has been murdered. Henry raised Kinsley on his farm in the absence of her parents. She loves him dearly.
Her next door neighbor is the town and county Sheriff Lincoln. He and Kinsley get off to a rocky start. She is determined that her grandfather’s murderer will be brought to justice. What follows is a tragic story of small town corruption on a large scale and a heartwarming story as well.
#brokenrhodes is a fairly short read but is packed with emotion. I urge you to give this first-time author a try. You won’t be sorry.
While I don’t know if Kimber is working on a new book, but I would love to see Kinsley, Lincoln and the rest of the gang again. Just a suggestion Kimber. 😝
I wasn't sure what to expect from this book since this author was new to me, but I am now hooked!
I was invested before finishing the first chapter with wonderful characters, and a thoroughly interesting storyline full of action, suspense, romance, and intrigue!! I didn't want to put the book down!
It's wonderfully edited to complete the package! I thought the title was very clever too!
I can highly recommend this book with confidence that you won't be disappointed! I look forward to reading more by this author! Well done!
When her beloved grandfather is murdered, Kinsley Rhodes returns to the small Kansas town where she was raised, demanding answers. Haunted by her past, but willing to confront both enemy and friend, she’s determined to find the killer. A successful computer programmer with analytical skills that most lack, Kinsley methodically dissects the crime, analyses suspects, and determines motive, all while battling those who once tried to destroy her. Intelligent, compassionate, and highly skilled, she’s fully prepared to cope with anything—except for Sheriff Lincoln James.
With a cast of well-defined characters, vivid descriptions of rural Kansas, and a plot that continually twists and turns, Broken Rhodes is a mystery, romance, psychological thriller, and tale of personal growth rolled into one. It’s a great story by a great author, and highly recommended.
If there’s a genre called “murder mystery-romance,” then "Broken Rhodes" by Kimber Silver, should be its #1 Best Seller. Some debut novels are good; "Broken Rhodes" is exceptional. Author Silver has created people, place, and plot that are engaging and, I dare say, addictive. Sliver left me wanting more of the playful duo Kelsey Rhodes and Sheriff Lincoln James. I’d like to meet them again—and soon! Jim Potter--author of "Deputy Jennings Meets the Amish"
Hometown Girl 🎵She grew up around here on the southwest side Where the corn grows up to the roadside Went to high school here, got that Panther pride She’ll be cheering them on every Friday night Josh Turner
I really enjoyed reading this book, to the point that I didn’t want it to end. Honestly Kimber’s writing is smooth, sublime and stupendous !
Intriguing and extremely interesting plot . This takes you to places of joy, sorrow, rage and empathy.
Characters are beautifully crafted with great vulnerability and emotion
When I finished reading this amazing book. I thought of the many gravel country backroads that we all travel at sometime in our life . The great road trips filled with beautiful memories. Along with the bumps, uneven terrain, twist and turns. And the dreaded “Road Closed”. This is where the story navigates with precise accuracy.
You have arrived at your destination
I strongly recommend reading this book. You will not be disappointed
I read a flash fiction story by Kimber Silver and enjoyed her writing. When I saw she had her first published novel, I snapped it up and I'm happy I did. I like reading about small-town America. In this novel, Kimber brings her main character, Kinsley Rhoades to a rural town in Kansas where her grandfather got murdered. She is determined to find out who is responsible. Returning to her childhood home, she must endure gossip and anger from some of the townspeople for a past she had no control of, and one that has haunted her over the years. Kinsley is a character many can relate to. She is broken. When she meets Sheriff Lincoln James, her past wounds come into play. Kimber does an excellent job of creating tension between the two characters. Her lack of trust, and refusal to allow anyone into her world, drive a stake in their relationship from the start. Kimber expertly describes the places and the people, capturing the many facets of the life she had lived. Kimber also broached the subject of bullying, intimidation, and violence that is like cancer in a person's life. The aftereffects remain for years thereafter. Bravo to Kimber for including this terrible malady. I liked Lincoln James' wit and his tenderness towards Kinsley. Kimber pulled all the strings together to present a wonderful story, with a happy conclusion, which I always hope for. 5 brilliant stars to Kimber Silver. I highly recommend this book and look forward to reading more.
DNF at 21%. I’m perplexed as to why a book that generally rated highly completely missed all the boxes for me. All the bits were there, girl returning to small town that she escaped from, a murder, long kept secrets, grudges, and the hint of a romance, but I found it to be trope overkill. But don’t let that stop you from enjoying it if you give it a go, my low rating is in the minority.
