The Chameleon Effect

Lights. Camera. Action

I've got everything it takes to make it in confidence, charisma, and a killer chin. Now all I need is a chance.
But Los Angeles is full of hot, young hunks, and talent might not be enough to separate me from the cookie-cutter crowd.

Well, you know what they fake it till you make it.

So I devise a wild scheme to get noticed. Pretend I’m someone I'm not—goodbye Will O’Connell of Cincinnati and hello Liam O’Connell of Dublin.

‘Liam’ and his talent with accents is enough to get my foot in the door, but I never anticipated meeting the woman who has me more worried about keeping my foot out of my mouth.

Enter Raven Locke, the dark-haired bombshell who puts the ‘tude in tattooed.
On set, she’s the costumer tasked with fitting my pants, but all I can think about is how to get into hers.
As my -- I mean, Liam’s -- budding career begins to heat up, so do our feelings.
While Raven pursues her passion for fashion; I chase her heart.

Our picture-perfect screenplay seems sure to send us riding off onto Sunset Boulevard…
Until Raven finds out that Comedy and Tragedy aren’t the only masks I'm wearing. Our romance might be destined for the cutting room floor, unless I can salvage our story with a plot twist she won't see coming.

The Chameleon Effect is the debut solo novel from acclaimed, award-winning romance narrator, Joe Arden.
A secret identity romance from the man with the secret identity!

This male POV rom-com has it lots of heat, plenty of heart, and a Hollywood-worthy HEA.

While many know him as Joe Arden, the narrator, his talents extend far beyond the microphone. He’s an accomplished author, poet, stage performer, and musician. His first solo published novel, The Chameleon Effect, made waves and was shortlisted by Audible’s editorial staff for the Best Audiobooks of 2022! The book won an Earphones Award and is now among the "Top 100 Romance Audios of All Time."

In 2024, he released Shadow.Self., a poetic collection blending over 20 sonnets and 40 haikus with stunning commissioned artwork. Shadow Self’s raw exploration of duality, darkness, and desire made it a bestseller in multpile poetry categories.

That same year, Joe debuted his original stage show, My Soul To Take, a creative fusion of literature, personal musings, and theatrical performance that sold out shows along the Eastern seaboard. A second run of shows is slated for Halloween weekend in New Orleans 2025. Tickets are available at Le Petit Theatre.

I’ll be the blackbird to your Irish, and oh my stitches! The Chameleon Effect by Joe Arden was a movie star, fake identity swoon-worthy romance that did deliciously good things to my heart! This romance created so many feel-good vibes, and I could not stop smiling! I love how Joe featured so many iconic L.A. locations which made the reader feel fully immersed in every aspect of the story. Told from Will aka Liam, an aspiring actor's point of view, we get an in-depth, intimate perspective of his ambitions, passions, mishaps, and desires as he goes after his dream job and his very own dream girl. I loved how Raven was determined and driven by her own hopeful goals to carve her own unique path in the Hollywood costume designing industry. Joe also brought the STEAM! Liam and Raven have insta-HOT chemistry that starts out fun and flirty, then later absolutely burns up the pages. (Hello spicy Facetime...)

Overall, I LOVED this book! If you are a fan of a fake identity romance with a hunky up-and-coming “Irish” actor, an eclectic spunky costume designer, accents, movie sets, Hollywood, an adorable niece, sewingtok, Dodger’s games, movies at Hollywood Forever Cemetery, an instigating sister, loyal workout buddy, a date at Ye Rustic Inn, rainchecks, clever conversations, super hot steamy times, coming clean, Medieval Times, and a HEA that will make your heart fly, then you will love Will and Raven’s story. Joe Arden's debut novel is red carpet worthy and is not to be missed! I can't wait to listen to this book in audio to experience all the accents and all the feels.

**Audio Review**
Wow! I loved reading The Chameleon Effect by Joe Arden, but listening to the audio took this sweet and seductive fake identity Hollywood romance to a whole new level! Joe Arden’s performance of his own words is passionate, full of emotion, and truly captivating. His ability to transition from character to character and accent to accent in his performance flowed seamlessly and made this such an enjoyable and enticing listen. Plus, Liam’s alluring Irish brogue is absolutely swoon-worthy! Maxine Mitchell voicing Raven’s chapter interludes gave us a glimpse into Raven’s point of view and was a clever perfect addition to a fantastic audio!

Joe Arden is a narrator of hundreds of romance books. As such, his fanbase and therefore the target audience for this book is largely women, given that women permeate the romance genre as both writers and readers. That said, I'm really not sure who or what this book was written for, aside from the desire to stroke his own ego. And according to an interview with ACX, Joe didn't have a story in mind when he started writing anyway. So that's neat.

The way the protagonist--Will, a struggling actor and a clear self-insert--talks about women, specifically his love interest Raven, is nauseating. There is nothing but blatant, egregious male gaze here, from the random inserts about the swell of her breasts upon first meeting, to "the gentle sway of her ass" as she walks away. The descriptions of her body are almost as endless as Will's admiration of his own (see below), with emphasis given to her "mountainous breasts" and svelte build. Also, she's "not like most women" Will meets in LA. Of course she isn't. There's a focus on the paleness of Raven's skin that borders on fetishizing (mentioned at least 20 times), and honestly seems reverent in a way that speaks to something worse. The attempts at flirtation and general overuse of puns and attempted jokes ring of the beta male who hits on women and then calls them ugly when they reject him. There's also an inordinate amount of purring from the women in this book (14 uses of that one plus one other instance of cat-like as a descriptor). Mercifully, aside from a handful of "interludes" meant to act as a chorus by way of Raven's TikTok, Arden doesn't attempt to write from a woman's POV. However with the way Will observes women, as I stated earlier, the male gaze is in full effect. Which, again, seems counterproductive for a book whose author must have assumed, even banked on, the audience being largely women.

Perhaps even more puzzling, though, is the way Will talks about himself. Whether it's prolonged appreciation of his own physicality (at least 19 times) or patting himself on the back for his tremendous aptitude for accents (about the same amount), there's no one who loves Will more than Will, and there's no one Will loves more than himself either. I highlighted three dozen instances of compliments from other characters or in many cases even from Will himself, either about his acting, his accent mimicry, or his body.

Keep in mind that this was written by an audiobook narrator, which means naturally, there is an audiobook. A scene in which Will slips from English to Russian to French is clearly meant for Joe to showcase what he believes are his own inimitable chops. Unfortunately, I've heard his accents, and given the stereotypical (and frankly, offensive) dialogue used for each of these accents in the text, I can't imagine this is an improvement. At one point, a character is described as having a Latina accent. This gives me pause for a couple of reasons: 1) Latina is an ethnicity, not a language or dialect with which to have an accent. 2) I'm almost certain this means that character's lines are delivered in a caricature of what I can only assume would be the accent of a native Spanish speaker talking in English. Because, again, I've heard his accents. Stereotypical at best; downright offensive at worst. In this same vein, there's also a section that utterly smacks of the same energy we hear when members of a privileged population lament that others are getting things that they feel entitled to. When frustrated that roles for American characters are going to British actors, he complains that he doesn't likewise get callbacks for British roles. "I'm not asking for a leg up; I'm just looking for parity." My guy. Stop. Did it ever occur to you that you're the common denominator? Not to imply that the British are a population that has been impacted by centuries of systemic abuse, but this is absolutely the same attitude as someone who complains about affirmative action.

There are also myriad pop culture references that give the same energy as Steve Buscemi saying, "How do you do, fellow kids?" The difference being that Steve Buscemi is someone I'd still want to talk to. They're reminiscent of American Psycho, which is fitting, because like Patrick Bateman, one gets the impression that Will also watches himself in the mirror while having sex. Along with the name dropping of various actors and musicians, Joe or Will, I'm really not sure which at this point, also seems incredibly concerned that we're aware of his familiarity with the Bard. The OG William, as he calls him.

What catapults this book from rom-com to high fantasy is the speedy trajectory of Joe's--I mean Will's career: from a struggling actor who can't land a job and whose agent doesn't know him, to landing a one-episode role on a procedural, miraculously being nominated and winning an Emmy for said role, to being cast as the lead in a major motion picture *before his single professional acting credit has even aired*, there is absolutely nothing grounded in reality here.

I will say that to Arden's credit, he does at least seem to have an understanding that grand public gestures (in the usual rom-com fashion) aren't what women want. He realizes that much, at least. It's not enough to save the story or warrant an extra star--and honestly, I had hoped to be able to give two stars, one for the book and one for effort, but I just can't. There's also a passage relating to Will's 6 year old niece that, the more I read, the angrier I get. This is a flagrant display of abuse and manipulation of a child, and the "hero" suffers no real consequences for his misbehavior.

The passage in question:
"And who's this little one?" Raven asks looking down to my right at the poor innocent that's been thrust in the crosshairs of my deception, and I can only hope she has the smarts to play along.
I squeeze Lexi to me, pinching her shoulder as I talk, hoping she remembers my speaking about Raven and the Irish persona that's shaded a small part of my personality with her. "This is Lexi. My brother's daughter. My niece."

This is predatory behavior. Did no one beta read this? Edit it? Anything?

Undeniably a book was written. Unfortunately it just isn't good.

Joe Arden is one of my favorite male narrators and I was excited to listen to his debut novel. As expected, the narration was fantastic. I loved all of the accents used and the book overall was a lot of fun. It took place in Hollywood between an actor and a costume designer. I'm not always the biggest fan of the plot of the book being a different identity, I wish things would have come out a little quick, but this was a sweet and fast paced romance.

Joe Arden’s solo debut can be found under the bright lights of Hollywood in a romantic comedy. It should delight those who love to laugh, adore fun-to-read plotting and delightfully easy to love characters.

Oh don’t you fret, there are ups and downs and a fake identity crisis that causes its own kind of troubles, but for the most part it’s downright sexy and naughty fun between our aspiring actor and his “blackbird.” And the secondary casting is just as enticing -- expecially a dragon-loving six-year old who goes by Lexi "Bean" a/k/a Lexi "Sprout."

It was a bit of a surprise how much I truly enjoyed an entire book written from the guy’s point of view – especially a rom-com, but I did! I also thought the fake identity plot added an extra bump to jump!

Sugar and spice and everything nice wrapped up in an ending that includes an Epilogue with the future looking bright for a happily-ever-after. All around an easy, quick and well-produced achievement.

WELL, WELL, what can I say, but WOW!!! I am more in aww of Joe Arden’s talent now than before. Normally I don't like male pov romance...but this was good! Oh, and hang on to your panties ladies, chapter 25 lives up to its hype🥵This man truly truly understands women. *whew*🔥 Congratulations, Mr. Arden, on your first book now, I have to go listen to this... I hear it’s even more intense, and I didn’t think that was possible 😏

It’s very fitting that a romance narrator with a secret identity writes a book about a character with a secret identity. Which just goes to show that Joe (wow, unintentional rhyming) has tried to be authentic with his first solo book.

Joe isn’t a stranger to romance books. He’s narrated over 500, so he has an idea of what works and he pulled it off. I enjoyed the heck out of it. I’m a fan of Joe’s so there may be a bit of bias, but I was impressed. It’s sweet, feel-good, and very sexy at times.

It’s a very easy relationship for the two MCs. There’s obvious chemistry and attraction between the two, but how will Raven react when she finds out Irish Liam is really Will from Ohio? I went into it hoping there’d be a big pay off and there is, but Raven definitely makes him work for it.

I love Will’s family and best friend and how supportive they are, especially his niece, Lexi, who has as much love for dragons and dinosaurs that I do.

There are definitely little Easter Eggs for fans of Joe’s and members of his Audio Attic on Patreon. I know he sprinkled in places in LA he knows and loves, so as a San Diegan, I kinda want to drive up and do a “Chameleon Effect” tour of LA now.

Joe also narrates the audiobook, with cameos from Maxine Mitchell, and I can’t wait to listen to it to get the full Joe effect…and the Irish accent. I hope he continues to write, as well as narrate, for years to come.

I voluntarily read an early copy of this book.

4.5 Stars.

Swoon... that's what I did the entire book! Will/Liam is full of sunshine, humor, and romance. You couldn't help but fall for him early on, especially after seeing how he is with his family and best friend. And once you see him with Raven? All bets are off because he will steal your heart a second time!
This story begins with a glimpse at the struggle to land that first breakout role in Hollywood. I truly felt his frustration with the situation while the humor casually thrown in over it kept things lighthearted and had me giggling the whole time. As this master plan of changing his identity takes off we meet Raven. This sweet and spunky woman instantly captures Will's attention and consumes his thoughts. The flirting was electric from their first interaction and I found myself grinning from ear to ear every time they had a conversation. They have such great chemistry together, which led to some very steamy moments as their relationship blossomed. Let's just say FaceTime will never be the same again because... whew! Pretty sure my kindle was melting a little during that scene haha!
And the romance... oh my gah the romance! Will knows the bar is high and he said hold my beer while I jump clean over that sucker. He is all about showing the woman he wants that he wants her and only her while being super respectful in the process. Consent. Is. Everything.
I also love how independent in her own life and career Raven is while being so supportive and understanding of Will pursuing his dream. Whether Will fell for her or not, I know I definitely did!
The true show stealer though was his niece Lexi. This little girl owned every scene she was in with her ability to have a witty mature conversation while simultaneously maintaining that adorable childhood innocence. Her relationship with her uncle is so precious that if nothing else in the book made you love Will (which is impossible in my opinion) their bond surely would have you head over heels.
So there you have it. Wonderfully written characters, a plot that will tug at your heartstrings as well as have you smiling from start to finish, and enough spice to heat things up without taking away from the story. All penned into the backdrop of Los Angeles in a way that makes you feel as though you've walked down those very streets and into every building with your own two feet.
Joe Arden nailed this book and I cannot wait to listen to the audiobook so I can relive it all over again!

In his solo debut, Joe Arden has hit it out of the park by writing a story with heart, emotion, humor and lots of swoon worthy moments. Being one of the top male romance narrators, Joe knows his stuff and did a spectacular job of writing a first person, male POV that left me wanting more.

Will has been trying to make it as an actor but has had no luck. He has the determination and skill to be successful but still hasn’t had his big break. When at dinner with his family, he comes up with the idea to give himself an identity makeover. Enter Liam O’Connell, aspiring Irish actor looking for his break. And on his first audition, he gets a guest role on a popular TV show. There he meets Raven, one of the costumers on set. Will feels an instant connection with her but is walking a fine line between himself and being Liam.

I loved the concept of this story. An actor who has what it takes to make it but is always just one step short of getting his big break. Will/Liam was such a fun guy to ready and you could tell his intentions were always meant for the best. Some book guys give you the ick, not Will. Will is smart, caring, funny and an overall good guy. Raven is a firecracker who takes no nonsense and her charismatic personality shines through. I had an instant girl crush on Raven from the first chapter and loved every part of her. The secondary characters, Will’s niece Lexi, was a hilarious kid who always told the truth in only thew ay a kid can. I loved Devontay, Will’s fitness trainer, was a personal favorite of mine and I hope we get a book featuring him.

So excited to read Joe's first solo effort. "How to Get Lucky" written jointly with the amazing Lauren Blakely was a taste of things to come. The Chameleon Effect has an original plot and has all the elements of what promises to be an unputdownable journey to Liam's HEA. The sexy Joe voice we love so much narrating his own book is the cherry on the top. This is one not to be missed.

5 star review of The Chameleon Effect by Joe Arden

AUDIO REVIEW:
Where do I start? This is narrator Joe Arden’s debut novel as a single author and what a way to start. I loved this book. From the first to the last chapter I was totally invested in the story he wove.
Will O’Connell is a struggling actor and is desperate to get his big break. An offhand remark by his sister in law sets in motion a chain of events that will change not only his acting career but his personal life forever; that’s when Liam O’Connell from Dublin comes into being.
Becoming Liam creates a successful career that see his acting taken to another level. When he meets Raven Locke, he is drawn to the beautiful and talented designer. I loved their journey, it was entertaining to watch their relationship develop but I was constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop. When it finally did, it was emotional and heart breaking.
What happens when the truth s uncovered? Will it destroy his acting career and his relationship? Can Raven forgive him? One click and find out.
Listening to Joe Arden narrate a book he has written was so special. I could listen to him all day long. He certainly did justice to the characters and the story and was a fantastic listen.

The Blackbird and Irish…

The Chameleon Effect was Joe Arden’s solo debut as an author…and what a great debut it was! This was a non-angsty, secret-filled, single POV, family loving romance!

I absolutely adored Will…or Liam…or is it William?? Talk about putting on the performance of a lifetime! He was easy so fall in love with (or maybe it was his accent?)…as Raven soon realized for herself. I also loved Raven’s strength and personality so much, as well as her talent! These characters were so detailed and relatable. And the supporting characters…gah! They were so lovable! I loved Will’s adoration of his niece and love of his family! The other side characters were perfect, too!

The storyline was smooth-flowing, romantic, laugh-out-loud funny, and swoon-worthy! I am a huge fan of Joe Arden’s narration ability and cannot wait to listen to this one in audio!

I loved so many things about this book. The number one thing being Joe's gift as a storyteller. I buddy read this and we talked about so how freaking great the lines were. He is so great at describing a setting and scene. I almost got in the car and drove to California. The second thing I loved is that some romance novels seem to have the conflict part resolved almost immediately, like a 'sorry' just fixes everything when someone royally screws up. I loved how Will/Liam really had to work to get everything back on track. Also, I want to add that chapter 25 was hot. If I was a smoker, I would have had a cigarette after listening to all that. No words.

It goes without saying that Joe is a great narrator and listening to this was such a treat.

Joe Arden is an excellent narrator. He’s also a damn good writer and storyteller. This was totally worth the Audible credit. I was entertained. I was impressed by his way with words. You can tell he wrote the book meaning for it to be performed, and he did it well.

I hope he writes more for us in the years to come.

Also, I teared up listening to his acknowledgments. AND the blooper reel is phenomenal 😂😂

When the giver of eargasms writes a book of course I’m going to read it and I will definitely be listening to this one as well💕

I truly enjoyed The Chameleon Effect. Joe’s writing style is fast (if that makes sense). While I was reading I kept thinking that I would really like to meet Will/Liam. This dude who’s breezing through life and wanting to change his trajectory so he does and it leads him to his forever…though there was a bump in the road 👀

Fave quotes:

“I’m a huge Sly fan. He’s like a fine wine. Most of the time—better with age. Sometimes, straight vinegar.”😑🤣

“Dude, what are you, nineteen? Fuck that noise. You like her. You ask her out again. Don’t string her along any more than you already are, you leprechaun.”—-Omg I love Devontay😅 he is brutally honest in a somewhat kind way 🤣

Joe Arden as a narrator is 100% perfect, The Chameleon Effect is Joe’s solo debut took me on a wonderful journey.
Extremely easy to read as the writing flowed effortlessly.
All the characters had such depth that it was easy to feel as if knew them.
RomCom, great banter, A extremely smart and bold heroine plus Will an inspiring actor who becomes Liam with an accent to match.

A fake identity added with a pure heart, perhaps a small mishap but for some, it’s an enormous mistake.j

Raven is her person and clever in her own right, they meet straight away there is a connection that turns into so much more.

The Chameleon Effect worked until ~~one click of this wonderful book!
The audiobook will be fabulous….

Oh my, Stitches!!! The Chameleon Effect by Joe Arden is one that you don't want to miss. It's a romance comedy about a movie star with a fake identity and you will swoon over the up and coming "Irish" star, Liam.

William O'Connell has everything it takes to make it in the cut throat world of Los Angeles. There's only one problem, it's full of just as equality talented and hunky actors. He is determined to stand out among the crowd and creates Liam, an Irish alter-ego of sorts. It works perfectly for him. That is until Raven comes into his life. She is a spunky tattooed costumer with her set of goals that she determined to meet. Will their insta-love carry them into the sunset with an HEA or will it fizzle out on the cutting room floor? Find out for yourself!

In the words of our heroine Raven, Joe Arden has that thing that can't be taught. His debut novel has "charm, charisma, and confidence." He takes his readers on an adventure around some iconic parts of LA, on a pretty romantic date to the Hollywood Forever Cemetery for a movie under stars and gives them an inside look at what it takes to keep that alter-ego going. If you had never heard of Joe Arden before reading this book, you would never know that it was his first solo experience as an author. I have said it before, and I will say it again. There is nothing that Mr. Arden can't do. He is perfection in the booth as a narrator and now he can add a 5- Hollywood- star worthy author to his repertoire. I can't wait to listen to the audiobook of The Chameleon Effect and for Joe himself to bring the story to life and to feel all the feels again.

**Audiobook Review**
There is something special that happens to an already fantastic story and read when you get to experience it through audio. Joe Arden not only wrote this charming story of Will/Liam and Raven but he also breathes life into his characters and words. I loved being able to read this book early but the audio gives Mr. Arden's story a whole new character. Will/Liam is a character that is a "chameleon," he can do so many different voices/accents and can just turn them off/on with a drop of hat, and Joe proves that he can do just that. He seamlessly flips between Irish, British, a little Australian, and his normal accents. Not just but he shows his skills at jump from a "Californian Surfer", an over excited director, his female voice, and even his young child voice. There is a reason he a prolific narrator and it shows as he brings Will/Liam and Raven to life. Listeners get a cameo appearance from the equally as talented and dexterous, Maxine Mitchell. She lights up this audiobook with the interludes from Raven's "Sewing Tok". She gives Arden's listeners a snippet into Raven's head.

Trust me when I say, you don't want to miss this audiobook. I can't wait for more not just from Maxine Mitchell and Joe Arden, the narrator, but also from Joe Arden, the author.

Narrator Joe Arden writes his solo debut roman, The Chameleon Effect. A movie star, fake identity, Hollywood steamy romance with all the swoon and feels.
This is a feel-good romance that will make your jaws hurt from smiling.
Joe Arden created a realistic world with authentic, relatable characters who fall hard and fast for each other. I especially loved Raven because she was independent and had her own hopes and dreams, but she simultaneously could support Will.
I loved Will, the way he got portrayed made me understand why he became Liam. He was a sweet and swoony man who did everything to realize his dream of being an actor.
I wondered at some point if Will and Raven's relationship was too easy. Aren't there always (small) bumps in the road? Everything leading up to the big drama just went so smoothly for them.

Between all the funny, swoon-worthy moments, we get taken to some iconic Los Angeles places, making the story feel lifelike.
The story is fluently written in the hero's POV with small chapter interludes from the heroine.

AUDIO REVIEW
I enjoyed reading the story but listening to Joe Arden narrate his book baby was magnificent and brought it to life.
It's audible how much passion and love he put into The Chameleon Effect, making listening even more addictive and captivating.
Shout-out to Maxine Mitchell for voicing Raven's chapter interludes. It was amazing to get these glimpses into her world.

The Chameleon Effect is an award-winning story, perfect for lovers of rom-com and feel-good romance.

I received an ARC but am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

Maybe it's because he has narrated over 500 books or maybe it's just because the man is insanely talented but all I know is that Joe Arden is an outstanding author. You wouldn't know by reading this that this is his debut solo novel. Joe truly knows what the readers want and what they enjoy in their stories and he truly shined with The Chameleon Effect.

The characters felt so real and had so much depth to them, you just couldn't help but cheer for them. You could definitely understand why Will became Liam, especially after his career instantly went on the upswing. Acting had always been his dream and he just wasn't ready to throw in the towel. Everything seemed to be falling into place and then he gets thrown a curveball when he meets the elusive Raven.

Liam wasn't expecting to meet someone who would make him want to rethink his whole life. And now Will and Liam are so entwined together he isn't sure how to right the path he has stumbled down. While all his dreams are finally coming true, he is also deceiving the one person who is becoming to mean more to him that he thought possible.

You knew the climax of the story was coming, you just didn't know how and when it was going to happen. While falling in love with these characters, I was on the edge of my seat because you knew what was coming. You just had to be patient to find out how Liam was going to make everything right again.

I absolutely loved every character in this story but most of all, Lexi. She was witty and cute and she had a way of telling it like it was in the way only a child can do. As much as I loved reading this book (and I did as I read it in a day), I truly cannot wait for the audiobook. I believe the audio is going to elevate this story to an entirely different level and I am counting down the days until I can listen.

Joe, I know how proud you are of this story and you have every right to be. This is definitely one of my favorite books this year and I hope the stories continue to flow.

Edited to add audiobook review: while I thoroughly enjoyed reading this story, hearing it performed by Joe Arden (with Maxine Mitchell) elevated it to another level entirely. There were so many moments while listening to this, I could hear the pure joy from Joe. The way he can seamlessly move from one accent to another is mind blowing. He is seriously talented.

This is the first solo book by the narrator - author Joe Arden.

💙 I'll start by saying I loved the all male POV story.
It's something I always loved and I don't find it very often in romance books.

The idea for the storyline was really exciting and I actually think it'll be really good in audiobook. 🎧
Will was funny and confidant and very loyal to his family.
However, while Will was supposed to be the Irish Liam, wasn't always as the flawless Irishman as he was presented to be. I often felt like I'm not reading an Irish character.
After he "became" Liam he was a little less funny and confidant.

Raven was a great heroine! I loved that we didn't get her POV but did know what she was thinking.
I loved that she had goals and she focused on them!

Will and Raven's relationship was a little too easy. I'm not talking about insta love. I'm thinking that it was just effortless.

However their chemistry was really good and I absolutely loved the smexy scenes.

As you can understand I was going back and forth in my head while reading this book. I loved some of it and had reservations in other parts.
I don't want to add more than that to avoid spoilers so let's just say that I I hope you'll enjoy this book better than I did ☺️

I thought that this was an amazing book. Will/Liam and Raven were incredibly likable and sinfully easy to fall for and cheer on. The story itself was skillfully written and I felt it read very easily. I really enjoyed looking at this romance from the male P.O.V. With chemistry that was electric, an attraction that was irresistible and feels that were huge, this fun read was absolutely delightful. This is my objective, elective review.

AUDIO REVIEW
Wow !!!!
What a wonderful start to narrator Joe Arden’s writing career and honesty I find it hard to believe this is his debut novel as a single author. From the moment I picked this book up I was captivated and there was no putting down until the final word had been read.
This is struggling actor Will O’Connell’s story and it’s a journey with plenty of twists and turns as well as secrets because with his career failing his sister in law suggests he becomes Liam O’Connell from Dublin and launch himself as a new actor. Becoming Liam take his career to new levels and when he meets Raven Locke he feels like his life is complete but what happens when his secret is revealed will Raven forgive him or will the deception be to much to forgive….one click now to find out.
This is a journey with all the feels, it’s emotional yet entertaining, it’s heartwarming yet heartbreaking but more importantly it’s a wonderful journey with wonderful characters.
What made this narration so very special was it was surreal listening to the writer also narrating his own book. Joe Arden has done a wonderful job as a writer and with the narration.

Happy Release Day!

When a debut solo novel comes out from Joe Arden, you know it’s going to be a fantastic day! This book is truly amazing! Extremely well written. Will/Liam and Raven are believable characters that take you through their journey even though it’s in Will/Liam’s POV. I absolutely loved the male POV with Raven’s interludes throughout the story!
And every time Lexi comes into a scene, she steals the spotlight! She was great!
I don’t want to give too much away but it’s a MUST read!
It’s light, funny, romantic and I only cried at one part!

Los Angeles is the City of Dreams. Many travel far and wide with the ambitious desire to make their mark on the world; to catch their big break, to be honored with a star on Hollywood Boulevard. And some may even have to invent an entirely new identity to get there.

William O’Connell has been trying for the last eight years to make it as an actor and it just wasn't happening for him. Since Will is a master at accents his sister-in-law came up with the idea for him to transform himself into an Irish actor to potentially help him get seen and casted for a role. Enter Liam O’Connell.

When Liam finally catches his break a "Raven" haired goddess also catches his eye. It was an insta-connection between the two. However, Will and Liam become so entwined that it's becoming difficult to know where one begins and the other ends, and he eventually has to face the music of his secrets.

I absolutely adored Raven and her dream and aspirations of making it in the lucrative fashion industry of Hollywood. Even though this book is told from the male POV, those interludes sprinkled throughout gave the reader an amazing sense of who she was as a character.

I absolutely loved all the side characters; from his brother, sister-in-law, best friend/personal trainer, to his adorable niece, Lexi! They all had an integral part in making this book a success.

Joe brought the banter, humor, spice, and swoon worthy moments to the surface of the pages and it was phenomenal! I give this book a standing ovation and it is most definitely a highly recommended read! If you're looking for your next rom-com, secret identity, sassy heroine, Hollywood vibe read, then look no further. Joe delivered it in spades in this book. Can't wait to see what Joe decides to write next!

No. Just no. This very much read like Joe Arden thought he could write a romance novel just because he has narrated more than 500 romance novels written by women. Felt like an ego stroke.

Continual objectifying and sexualizing of the FMC the ENTIRE novel.

He was trying so hard to write lyrically (I guess) but failed miserably. The man must have just used a thesaurus the entire novel and couldn’t come up with better synonyms. Cumulus, puckers… both words used to describe her lips. The language was unrealistic and Raven said some things that I don’t think a woman would ever say. Also, Raven “purrs” a lot… I guess this is Joe’s synonym for “growl”. Like it’s okay to just use the word “said”.

This was written by a man through the male gaze having no fucking idea what women women want or think or even say. He very much has no idea what it’s like to be in a woman’s head, especially during sex. The main thing the FMC said during sex was to comment on how hot the MMC was or how great his dick was… another ego stroke. The entire novel consistently pointed out how good looking he was and how talented he was.

The MMC was obsessed with the whiteness of the FMCs skin…. gross. He was constantly wanting to fuck her because of how she was eating or what she was wearing… objectifying much?

I’m kinda glad this was only single POV because it was very evident Joe cannot write women.

ETA: there was also a six year old in this novel that spoke like a 25 year old who was also constantly stroking the MMCs ego… as if him doing it himself wasn’t enough

Great storytelling in debut book!

The Chameleon Effect is this author's first book and he has hit a home run on the first pitch.
The book is told in the males POV and is done very well. This book has a very good plot and storyline.
Will O'Connell is a struggling actor in LA, he leaves an audition and goes to his brothers home after realizing he didn't get the part. They come up with a plan for him to go in to his next audition as Liam O'Connell and use an Irish accent. When they came up with the plan they figured that if it worked he could come clean and be okay. But when it works so well and he's swept away into the "act". Liam now has to keep up the Irish accent and even though he's using his own voice when he's acting, the cast and director, all think he's Irish when he's not acting. There's times that you just want to his him up side the head and say just tell the truth! But he's so good at what he's doing and you're just waiting for him to get caught.
Then there's Raven, she's so sweet and talented. They're such a cute couple together and you are really rooting for their relationship to work. It breaks your heart every time Liam even thinks about coming clean to her and something happens that he doesn't. So it makes it harder for him the longer he waits.
This is the first time I've read a romance book written by a male author written completely in the male POV. For the very first solo book by this author, he did an excellent job of writing this book, he put a lot of emotion into the characters and he really knew how to write a good steamy scene. Great job! I thoroughly enjoyed the book along with the audio book.

“Our eyes lock and the need for words melts away.”

For years, I’ve known that Joe Arden is an incredible storyteller. He has an unmatched talent for performing the written word. When he co-wrote How to Get Lucky, readers got a glimpse of another level of his talent. To read his first solo full-length novel is a true pleasure. The Chameleon Effect is a wonderful romcom told from the POV of the hero, William O’Connell. Cover to cover, this swoon-worthy romance stole my heart. I loved the behind-the-scenes peek of the film industry. Joe’s meticulous attention to detail paints a wonderful picture for his readers. Joe’s prolific career in romance narration is a boon for TCE readers; Joe can write one hell of a spicy scene! This secret identity romance, written by the man of mystery is full-to-bursting with witty dialogue, dynamic & lovable characters and mountains of charm.

“…though we’re in a crowd, it feels like it always does when I’m with Raven. Like we are the only two people in the world.”

Raven is a magnificent, dynamic heroine hell-bent to live her dreams of creating unique, badass fashions. Her passion for her art beautifully matches William’s passion for his craft. An actor on the verge of defeat, William takes desperate measures to give his career one last chance. Their fiery ambition is inspiring. Even when you may want to scream at William, he’s just so damn lovable, there’s nothing to do but root for him. Raven is beguiling, wonderfully fierce, and deliciously sultry. The chemistry between William and Raven is undeniable and sizzles so hot, it gave me goosebumps. Liam can talk Irish to me any time; he is a totally dreamy book boyfriend. In The Chameleon Effect, Joe celebrates the city of LA with such vivid imagery that he transports you to the wondrous city. This debut novel is heartfelt, funny, steamy, and will hit you in all the feels. If you are looking for a charismatic, flawed, cinnamon roll hero and a fascinating, talented, strong heroine, you’ll love The Chameleon Effect! Joe’s care, passion, and versatility shine through his words from beginning to end. I cannot wait to listen to the audiobook.

This book right here. The Chameleon Effect. This is going to be a love story I compare all others to. This book is smart, funny, witty, a little spicy and a lot sweet! Joe put his heart and soul into these words and you can hear it when he speaks them.

One of my favorite parts about this story is that Liam and Raven were written so perfectly. Raven was a little sassy who wasn’t going to let her guard down. Liam…what can I say??? He’s sexy, he’s swoony…he actually courted Raven. Took her on DATES. This whole story felt so genuine and real and I loved every single thing about it.

Joe wrote this book to tell the story. If you’ve never listened to an audiobook before, let Joe be your first. There is nothing more pure than the author speaking his own words and putting his entire self into it.

In short, this book is 5 Hollywood stars and one I will be thinking about and coming back to for a long time. Definitely give this one a chance! You will not be disappointed! ❤️
