Reily Garrett is a writer, mother, and companion to three long coat German shepherds. When not working with her dogs, she’s sitting at her desk with her furkids by her side. Author of chilling suspense and snarky romance, her stories include romantic thrillers and paranormal romance, . Regardless of genre, each book delves into a dark and twisted imagination yet is tempered with romance and a touch of humor. Reviews by Kirkus Reviews, San Francisco Bay Review, and BestThrillers.com best describe her work: "This could be James Patterson, Lee Child, and Tess Gerritsen rolled into one, but the dark, twisted methods used by the serial killer could surprise even those readers…” - San Francisco Bay Review “…steamy, seductive police procedural…” - BestThrillers.com “…well-researched thriller that remains romantically genuine throughout.” - Kirkus Review
Prior experience in the Military Police, private investigations, and as an ICU nurse gives her fiction a real-world flavor.
This is book four of The Guardians series and introduces us to two new characters, Dr Neah Haversham, a genetic engineer who wants to find the key to turning off the specific genetic code that gives her super sensitive senses plus the ability to link with animals, and the young teenager, Casper, who her mentor Catherine has sent her out to save. She has no idea how Catherine knew where to send her and how she knew the teen was in danger and needed rescuing, but she ended up in a remote location and found Casper drugged and out of it beside a van, where a woman and man, Jenkins, were apparently waiting for their female boss to turn up. When they see Neah, Jenkins thinks they will be able to give their boss a two for one deal. It turns out Casper has a very unique ability, the ability to phase her body through materials and objects at will, making her highly valuable to whoever it is that is building some sort of army of abilities, for nefarious purposes. Neah finds Casper hard to deal with and very hard headed, wanting to return to find out if her foster parents were okay, putting herself back in the field of fire and unknown danger again! When she runs off when they have stopped for food and to freshen up, Neah calls Ouray Bernard, the Native American healer she met in the local hospital just weeks before, who she was somehow drawn to. He and Keira, along with her wolves Wraith and Ghost, are nearby and come to track Casper down before she can be taken again. Keira suspects a tracker has been placed in Casper and she has a load of fun, as does Casper, as they portal into different places to trick whoever is after Casper, as to where she may be. It seems Casper has found a kindred spirit in Keira and Ouray went through enough issues with the teenage Keira back in the day. He isn’t sure he could cope with another one! He is their team’s trainer, as well as a healer, but the more he finds out about Neah and the purpose of her studies, the more he wants to distance himself from the feelings he has growing towards her. It seems the only safe place for both Casper and Neah will be the Sanctuary, where Ouray, Keira, her husband Wyatt, their leader Nicholai, her twin sister Ashlyn and her husband Taylor, Dacien, Keira and Ashlyn’s older brother Logan and Simon the monkey, all live and train together. There is another team of people with special abilities that they have come to trust, led by a man called Kenner and they work together when required. Neah and Casper will both soon find out that they cannot carry on with life as they did before and they will require the manpower and abilities of both groups to combat the organisation that is collecting talents and the Order of Assassins that seem to carry out their dirty work! Nicolai’s premonitions have never steered the wrong so far, but with Casper pairing up with a slightly more mature Keira, and Ouray forced to look out for Neah, it is going to be a difficult job to keep them both safe, as well as the other members of their team, as they face a foe who always seems to be two steps in front of them and has some very unique abilities on their side. Pandora is the face of evil they will soon all face, but she is not the head of the snake and Wyatt will have to work his magic on the computer, to track down exactly who they need to take down, as well as the secret locations of the labs where teens and others with abilities are sent to, tortured and experimented upon, to gain more knowledge of their powers and hopefully use someone like Neah to replicate them! Neah has been pursuing a dream of finding a way to cancel her abilities to sense everything and anything, often having found it all overpowering and leaving her no peace at all, but her work is being funded by the very people who seem to be involved in kidnapping Casper and other like her, to use for their own ends and purposes. Neah was naive enough to think her work could be used by her and others who don’t want their abilities, as well as for those who are a danger to society and need neutralising. But she hasn’t considered those who like their abilities and use them for good, or those who would use her research and create armies of soldiers with special abilities and use them to take power or anything else they desire! It looks like Nicolai’s group will finally have to allow the Colonel to know all of their secrets and abilities, as they will need his connections to uncover the evil in other cities. This secret organisation is looking to rule them all, but pockets of resistance like these Guardians, are ready to fight back and won’t allow innocent people to continue to be taken and experimented upon, if they can help it! Another member of Keira’s family has been found and Ouray now has his hands full with a woman who completes his soul, and an independent and trying teenager to corral into the team. A bit of romance, with loads of danger and some interesting abilities revealed and showcased yet again. I can’t wait to find out what happens next and whether they will finally manage to discover who is behind all the attacks and disappearances. A worrying addition at the end of the story, with the return of something long thought gone forever, meaning more may also return, bringing danger and a very skilled foe! I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
I was immediately sucked into the book when I started reading Shadowed Spirits. I was thrilled that Ouray was getting his HEA, and I couldn’t wait to see who Neah was and what abilities her character would have. I wasn’t disappointed!!
Shadowed Spirits are the 4th book in The Guardians series. Technically, readers could read this book as a standalone mainly because the author does go over what happened in the previous books in the beginning. I would, however, strongly recommend reading the first three books before reading this one.
As noted in the first paragraph, Shadowed Spirits are the love story between Neah and Ouray. This book starts shortly after the last book’s events and introduces Neah. Neah is a genetic engineer coming close to cracking the code of not only her psychic gift but everyone like her psychic gifts. But Neah is on a mission from her mentor when the book starts. That mission is to rescue a gifted teenager from people who wish to harness her ability. But that mission goes sideways, and Neah finds herself joined to Ouray’s group. Determined to keep the teen safe and finish her research, Neah doesn’t have time for romance. But as she gets to know the group, Neah realizes that maybe her research wasn’t for the greater good and was selfish. When her research is stolen, and the teenager kidnapped, Neah must put aside everything she thinks about her gift and use it. Will Neah and the group be able to rescue the teen? Will Neah come to terms with her gift? And more importantly, will Neah and Ouray recognize their feelings for each other?
I liked Neah. From the minute she was introduced in the book, I was fascinated with her. Her gift was unique, and I could sympathize with her frustration with it. It must have been not very good to live with heightened senses. I understood why she went into genetic research. She wanted a way to turn it off. It made sense to me. She mildly annoys me when she refuses to listen to reason with her research (it could put people like her at risk). But other than that, I enjoyed her character.
I was super happy that Ouray got his love story. A little of his background was released, and I wish the author had released more of his background. He was a stabilizing force with Caspar and Neah once they overcame their initial distrust of him. Plus, he trained them (which they both needed). I enjoyed his character a lot.
I wasn’t expecting Caspar and her abilities. Just for the record, Caspar is not her real name. She got the nickname because of her ability. Caspar can phase through inanimate and animate objects. She reminded me of my almost 17-year-old daughter: headstrong, spunky, and with a heart of gold. She cared more than she let on. I also was in awe of her ability. The more the author released, the stronger it got. She phased through a mountain to escape the bad guys while holding Neah in one memorable scene. In another memorable scene, she could phase her hand through a chest and grab a heart in her hand as an intimidation tactic. I cannot wait to see where her story ends up.
The romance angle of Shadowed Spirits was very slight and almost overlooked. I didn’t feel Neah and Ouray liked each other that way until nearly the end of the book. And that was only after Christine’s vision that Neah saw herself with a black-haired toddler boy.
There were zero sex scenes in Shadowed Spirits. Ouray and Neah kiss, but it is towards the end of the book. Honestly, I liked it like that. I felt that sex would have taken away some of the storylines with everything going on.
The author very well wrote the plotline regarding Neah, her research, the two groups helping her, and the group kidnapping people with abilities. Some of those scenes were gripping, and I couldn’t put my book down. I also loved what happened with Pandora towards the end of the book. Let’s say that she deserved what she got.
The plotline centered around Neah; her background and her abilities were interesting. I did figure out who Neah was related to by the middle of the book. But, I was still surprised when the author made the grand reveal at the end. It did make sense.
The plotline centered around Caspar, her background and her abilities were well written. I enjoyed watching her character flesh out during the book. As I mentioned above, I was in awe of her abilities. She was one of the more powerful, gifted people I have read in the series. Her background is revealed at the end of the book. She found out where she came from and how she ended up in the foster system. The only thing that the author didn’t release was her true name.
The end of Shadowed Spirits was terrific. The author wrapped up Neah and Ouray’s storyline and part of Caspar’s. But she left all the rest open and threw in a shocking bit of information that made my mouth drop. I have a feeling I know who the next couple will be, but I’m not going to say.
I would recommend Shadowed Spirits to anyone over 21. There is no sex. There is language and violence. There are also scenes of people being held against their will and drugged and kidnapped.
The suspense thickens – another sparkling thriller!
Author Reily Garrett has been employed as an ICU nurse, a private investigator, and in the military police – all of which supplies her with the intricate and detailed knowledge from which she forges her books. She addresses issues such as man's cruelty and ingenuity for torment and torture, having witnessed the after-effects of a teenager mugged at knife point for a pair of tennis shoes, or an elderly woman stabbed repeatedly with a screwdriver for no apparent reason- all leaving an indelible impression that will forever haunt her subconscious. On the other side other spectrum of experiences she has observed a woman stopping her vehicle in severe, snowy weather to offer her own winter coat to a stranger, a teenager wearing a threadbare hoodie - life's diversities observed by Reily are endless. Her Guardians Series continues with SHADOWED SPIRITS.
The opening lines of this fourth volume pull the reader in intensely – “Concrete is porous. Most think it’s the same as cement. Not True. HPC, high performance concrete, maintains tiny pores despite the decreased amount of water in the mix. Neah counted the holes in the base surrounding the mailbox at the end of her lane, seen from her seat on the school bus. Her acute sense had ratcheted up to an unbearable level since her thirteenth birthday two weeks prior. They were her greatest source of frustration and anxiety, overshadowing Cindy’s intense dislike and Shawn’s increasing interest…’ Subtly, Reily introduces her characters in this continuing psychic thriller.
The synopsis tempts further: ‘Genetic engineer Neah Haversham thought unlocking the code to her psychic gift would ease the way to blocking it, something she’d wanted since puberty. Unable to turn off heightened senses means experiencing life on a different level. Shiya, her golden retriever, is the only companion tolerated. Within months of finishing her studies, she learns the life she planned has vanished with the rescue of a sarcastic, hardheaded teen with an unprecedented ability. Ouray Bernard is a healer and warrior, a Native American who uses his skills to train other uniquely talented individuals. When called to help the woman invading his dreams, he can’t refuse. Loyalties collide as each defends their position in the battle against a secret society determined to dominate them all.’
Once again Reily proves her position on the platform of excellent mystery novels is assured. Very highly recommended
Reily Garrett – The Guardians Bk 4 – Shadowed Spirits – Reviewed 8/17/22 – Read 8/6-8/22
Another threat, another action.
Her mentor tasks Neah Haversham with rescuing a stubborn teenager from being kidnapped and sent to one of the many prisons that hold talented people. As we know from the previous books, rogues want to capture and use the unique talents of others for their desires. Many of those desires are destructive and dangerous to others. Neah’s own talents are something that she wants nothing to do with, so she majored in genetic engineering to discover how to block them. But for now, she is using them to rescue this young teenager and ends up needing help. She calls on the one man that she knows will come to her rescue. Ouray Bernard is a healer and warrior, a Native American who uses his skills to train others, but when he receives a call from Neah, the woman that keeps invading his mind and dreams, he cannot refuse.
What did I like? Wow, there is so much going on in this book. We have a new talent that no one has ever heard of before; we have Ouray trying to deal with the feelings that are invading his whole world, and Neah trying to understand herself and deal with the feelings that she is experiencing. Then we have the family of talents still learning to live with one another and fight the many undesirables that keep doing horrendous things. Plus, they are still searching for the many prisons holding people with talents, so they can free them and help them adjust to their worlds. Just another of the extraordinary books from one of my favorite authors.
What will you like? Holy mackerel, the action is ramped up in this book. We find a new love story, a new talent, but will we find a new family member? You will learn more about one of my favorite characters, Ouray. Being Native American, he is special to me! You will find this and more in the next book of The Guardian series by Reily Garrett. Shadowed Spirits will be available on August 19, 2022. Be sure to mark your calendar!!!
Genre: Romance, General Fiction, Sci-fi and fantasy
Well, surprises in this book. Somehow I thought it was the final one – and its not. My bad!! I'm glad though because something in last book felt way too simple and ending considering the build up and here we see that actually, it may not have been so simple after all. Yay. I'm pleased, I felt a bit unsatisfied the way it was, and am looking forward to what Reily develops for the next book. Which I think is the last one but who knows, I've got it wrong once ;-)
I liked that the romance was more a slow burn, a visceral attraction and yet two people diametrically opposed in views. The earlier books have mostly been a kind of insta-love, which I don't mind but I prefer things to grow organically as they have here. It was good to see through Neah's views how talents/gifts are not always positive, that they can have severe downsides. I understood Neah's desire to be rid of it, but that wasn't the only answer. Not knowing others like her she hasn't had anyone to help her manage it. She gets involved with Caspar,( and all I can think of is Caspar the friendly ghost from many years back....) a troubled teen with special abilities and a typical teen sense of indestructibility. That brings her in the sphere of Nikolai and his team, and she learns not everyone hates their talents, and Ouray is disgusted at her attempt to block them off. He sees them as part of him, part of what makes them, part of their heritage. Its a battle on the field and of hearts, and it looks like neither will bend. And as I said there's one bit slipped in towards the end that brings things right out in the open again, and end that's not neatly tied up but may be out and about and hunting them again. That feels right, fitting with the story arc.
Stars: Five, a fun escape, a world of potential if you believe that some people could have talents like this. And its so easy to see how unscrupulous people, governments etc would see to use them for their own ends.
~The same reading excitement as offered riding a roller-coaster ~First, I’ll state that I received this book as a gift from the author to read and review. ~This is the fourth book in The Guardians series…and it is an outstanding read. ~I liked the previous book, “Shadowed Passages,” but this story really kept me reading and wanting more. As with every new story the list of characters grows. Some are better than others. The new character of Casper has proven to be one of my favorites in the entire series. I would gladly read a complete story just featuring her! ~As in real life, evil seems to never be truly and completely vanquished…it keeps reappearing. ~I enjoyed the character development of several of the prominent characters. The slow romantic burn between Ouray and Neah was masterfully crafted. There was this immediate and obvious attraction, and yet they were of such opposite opinions concerning ‘powers’ it was hard to see any sort of relationship ever being possible. But as the story was crafted things changed. ~I would recommend the entire series. …and this books, as with a roller-coaster ride was definitely one of the high, exciting points.
Shadowed Spirits: Book 4 of The Guardians by Reily Garrett
3.5☆ Xmen type story, slow burn romance
X-men type story with several mysteries happening at the same time and a touch of "fated" romance. Although Dog Soldiers are mentioned, the author does not show or share with readers any scenes of NA cultural practices of the group or individuals. Maybe this was done previously during books 1 through 3?
This is part of a series. For best enjoyment, reading from the beginning is probably better. This is not the final book, so there are hints of possible betrayal and rescues planed to drive the plot forward into the next episode. I may have enjoyed this more if I could have concentrated well enough to binge-read it. I feel this material would translate well into an audio drama to better give the plot and characters the energy to keep print impaired readers engaged even through interruptions.
*I received a Booksprout reviewer copy of this title and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Our heroine has a gift which has caused her nothing but trouble. She wants to block it out forever, but our hero may have a better way. If she can accept his help, that is.
This is book four of the series, but it is written as a standalone. No prior reading is required to enjoy this one.
This is an urban fantasy story with a bit of the paranormal woven in. The story is well written, easy to read and starts off with a bang. Not literally, but it does grab hold of you right away and never lets go. The characters are well done with a firm sense of being that brings the story to life. Overall, this was a fast paced story and I really enjoyed this addition to the series. I can't wait to see where it goes next.
Highly recommended.

Shadowed Spirits is book number four in the Guardian series. Reily Garrett is an amazing author who takes you on a roller coaster of a ride in each book with never a dull moment. You get so caught up with her very well developed characters, all who individually have a special form of psychic ability. They come together to form a unique army who band together to fight others, also with physic abilities, who want to use their powers for evil. Riley introduces new characters into each book a and has a way of intertwining all of them together making you want more and more. Each book takes you on a journey filled with intrigue, suspense and a touch of romance. I enjoy all the different psychic abilities and the way they come together but my favorite is the ability to connect with animals. Can’t wait to see where their new adventure takes them.
When Neah's mentor insisted she help rescue a young teenager from danger little did Neah know that her entire life would change. Casper is like a mini Kiera. Mouthy, impulsive, witty and independent. Kiera cringed to think 'Was I that bad? Did I give Nicholai all those gray hairs?' Ouray felt a strong connection to Neah the first time he met her. Even dreamed of her. Once he found out about her research it turned sour immediately. There was no way to convince her how wrong she was. Pandora's only interest was to capture Neah and Casper. With every attempt the team banded together to fight her and her minions. Absolutely hooked on this series! So many twists and turns around every corner. Can't wait for next installment Shadowed Intent!
another young woman is added to the collection of people with mysterious talents separated from their families. Casper can fade through walls and other solid objects, a handy talent.
Nevah sets out to rescue Casper from kidnapping, and finds herself needing assistance.
Her talents as a geneticist and her drive to end being overwhelmed by her talents have led Nevah to some curious and questionable research. She may only be interested in resolving issues for folks like her overwhelmed by their talents, but her research could prove dangerous in the wrong hands
new allies, family and friends as well as cutting and deadly betrayals and intense drama, action and intrigue.

The Guardian series steps it up a notch with new talents and new adversaries. Neah Haversham, a genetic engineer, discovers a new purpose in her work after learning the difference between using talents for good versus evil. Ouray Bernard dislikes Neah at first. However, there is a connection between them that is stronger than either can avoid. Add in the mix a sarcastic, impatient, redheaded teenager with an awesome gift, and things get dicey. I adore the character interactions and how they combine their efforts to get the upper hand on their opponents. I love this series. Each book can stand alone, but the reader gets so much more by reading the series in order. I received a copy, and I'm voluntarily giving my honest review.
This storyline was predictable I called correct on neah.why did we never get told what caspers real name is.wouldn't she want to respect her parents and use it? Same with neah is that her real name why wouldn't Logan notice? He was 9 I'm guessing she was 7 not sure why she don't remember her life before 7.not many would but the change of parents you would remember.some holes in this storyline that don't make it feel real or flow, I get the author wants you guessing and some story's are yet to be delivered but human nature is natural and should be in the storyline to make you fall in this make believe world and feel the human emotions. That's why only three stars.
The new gifted are being incorporated into the family. all the training is being doubled
Casper and Neah are being brought into the training as fast as possible. Casper is a new talent and there are curves in figuring how to use her immature talent. Neah is still fighting the need to kill and is only now discovering why they need their gifts. Her mentor is captured and used to take Neah and Casper. The two teams get together and save as many as they can. The Major is finally invited home.
I don’t know how Reily Garrett comes up with her stories but they are so imaginative I find myself wondering which talent I would like to possess but I can never make up my mind there are so many now. Casper is a great addition and brings a whole new dimension and makes me laugh. Neah is interesting and complicated at the same time and her relationship with Oural is powerful and sweet. The storyline is every bit as compelling as always and I can’t wait to read Shadowed Intent.
This is a wonderful addition to this thrilling series! Wonderful well written plot and story line that had me engaged from the start. Love the well fleshed out characters and found them believable. Great suspense and action with wonderful world building that adds so much to the story. Can't wait to read more of these. Recommend reading.
I read a complimentary advance copy of the book; this is my voluntary and honest review.
Another brilliant book in this complex fast paced action packed series. A book full of twists and turns, mysteries, a few more revelations and lots more questions, new abilities, new villains, heartbreak and loss alongside monkey antics, humour, love and romance. Loved it.

This series just keeps surprising me - I love it so much! It’s getting so good. I cannot wait for more of Casper’s story in the next book and who else they accept into their family. I am so happy for Ouray and Neah - they deserve all the happiness and what a match ;) I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book.

I really enjoy the way Reily Garrett writes, I've been a fan of the author and the Guardians series since it started. It had a great plot going on in this book and felt like it belonged with the others. I look forward to reading more from Reily Garrett.

After not enjoying book 3, I decided to give this one a chance. I’m glad I did. This book was back on track with missions by the team. They’re closer to finding the people who are causing chaos. Neah is a brilliant geneticist, who inadvertently ends up joining the team to find psychics held hostage by the bad guys. Looking forward to the next book.
Loving this series as the stakes ratchet up continually. Another compelling read that will keep you engaged from go. The teenage behaviours are spot on, impatience, compulsion, and anger being the standouts. Looking forward to the next book.
In this the fourth book of the series, a new sibling is found. A new skill with great possibilities comes to light. The series is growing expediently with new skills, new members, and situations.
I'm really enjoying the books in this series. There's lots of action and suspense to feed the plot. Great characters with a growing cast. The paranormal talents are frosting on the cake!
Just keeps getting better and better. I am waiting with bated breath as to if when and where the nasty Roth comes back. I was hoping he had been dumped in the arctic circle. Reading on….,,
