Seeking a paranormal world amongst the living? Prefer life as you read about it in dark novels where unexplained deaths and disappearances invariably transpire in the old city of New Orleans? Longing to meet a vampire? Wanna walk in the Quarter with another misfit, yet charming gothic girl? Hoping for intelligent bantering, endless romance, and a bit of spooky voodoo stirred into this tale?
Drawn to the city of New Orleans, Sybella Rose seeks answers hidden in mausoleums of lore, and she soon discovers that history and mystery walk together in this world filled with more dead than the living. As this recipe for love and power is revealed, Sybella Rose tastes a bit of rebellion, befriends a lonely ghost, and drowns deliciously in the essence of a certain vampire before finally succumbing to her inevitable end.
Southern-born Victoria Clapton is no stranger to writing. She completed her first book of poetry at age eight and her first novel at age thirteen. Multilingual, friend to all creatures, (and in particular, especially a friend to cats in need of rescue), Victoria is a forever curious world traveler with a mysterious knowledge of things and places that encompass many lives ago, an avid collector of saga books, a practicing vegetarian and yogini with her feet well balanced in earth’s splendor. She and her cat companions enjoy all things Viking, faery, vampire, new writing instruments, herbology and anime.
I received this book free from the author, but it hasn't influenced my opinion of her book. (I believe it was in beta stage at the time.)
Like all of the books I've read from this author, I adored this one. Bound by Blood is an interesting concept. While it's about an old subject, vampires, and in the most popular place for them to be, New Orleans, the author found a way to make it refreshing. I loved the characters. Sybella is a human who after reading a lot of books about vampires is fascinating by them and since her family is almost inexistent, she decides to move to New Orleans. I'll skip the rest, the blurb surely explain the story well enough.
Sybella, unlike many heroines, is a strong character who is soon taking control. A sexy but moody vampire, Demien finds himself unwillingly bound to her. My only pet peeve is that I would have liked to hear more about Demien but the book is written in first person POV from the point of view of Sybella so we only get what she knows, leaving Demien to be mysterious, which serves the purpose well.
Overall a great story for lovers of Vampires and New Orleans, which is so well depicted, one could almost feel there. It made me want to visit (aside from the mean vampire parts, of course).
I loved this story so much! I've always been a sucker for castaway girls that are just starting a life somewhere new. Girls who are badass and have strong wills and discover their powers as the story progresses. Sybella Rose is all of that, with fierce pomegranate hair and always clad in black. She is witty, fearless, but sometimes self-doubting; realistic enough that you can relate to her. Also, I drool over sexy ass vampire male leads, especially when they have a tortured past and are fiercely loyal. Demien captures that bad boy vampire boss role deliciously. And any book is made 1000x better when it has a cat, just sayin ...
The story revolves around Sybella and Demien's vampire-human relationship and its inescapable nature. They share the Binding, which pretty much makes them wholly dependent on each other and attracted to no other creature on Earth. Or spirit world. They have some obstacles to overcome, mainly themselves, the past, and later some Big Bad Vamp set on revenge. There's action and humor but this story is a hardcore romance!
Victoria Clapton's imagery has always been wonderful but somehow I appreciated it more with this novel. This is what I envision when people say a tale "richly told". You get the feeling of walking through New Orleans and experiencing its art and culture while immersed in this book. A must read for New Orleans vampire fans!
A decadent and sumptuous literary feast of old-school vampires and New Orleans’ goodness. The care Clapton takes in infusing each page with rich New Orleans’ vibes is just *chef’s kiss*. Add in the vampire equivalent of “fated mates” feat a feisty red haired witch and a dark and handsome brooding vampire, and yeah. Win-win. Beautiful writing, just enough spice, and lots of delicious food references (I’m so hungry now 😆). Definitely recommend!
The FMC spends a little too much time thinking about her hair and makeup and Goth-ness for my tastes. That, coupled with the fact that she moved to a new city out of nowhere with no apparent goals or aspirations, and a degree in a subject she apparently isn’t good at, (music theory—doesn’t play any instruments) just screams “I dress up like this as a substitute for having a personality.”
But it’s not even necessary, because she DOES have a personality. The most interesting thing about FMC is her genre-savvy behavior; for example, when she spies an old-timey photograph of the MMC on a friend’s ancestral altar and gets the brush-off, she confronts the friend and is like, “this guy is obviously a vampire, let’s just talk about it instead of dancing around the subject.” She tells people about the strange things in her life instead of hiding it like so many TSTL FMCs with trust/communication issues. About the bad guys, instead of acting all cowed or brushing off the threat entirely, she asks the question all of us would ask: “Why don’t we just kill him?” It just saves so much time for the actual meat of the plot!
Now, I gotta warn you, this book is about 60% vampires and 40% New Orleans travel brochure. There’s a LOT of talk about food and descriptions of historic buildings and such. It sounds lovely, and is obviously well-researched, but it might be a bit excessive.
The titular Binding is a fated mates situation where the MCs feel inexplicably drawn toward one another, but I thought this book had an interesting take on that feeling, because it makes the characters feel at times frustrated or confused by their own behavior—kinda like when you’re really hungry and you snap at someone and you’re immediately like, “why did I say that?” The MCs sense the rightness of their fate, but the strangeness of that instantaneous connection is still remarked upon.
I didn’t really love the dialogue in this book. The FMC and MMC aren’t great at banter, and I didn’t feel comfortable with the way that Jojo and Al, two black characters, seemed to kind of center their existence around the white FMC who just strolled into town. Al’s accent being written out in text form versus MMC’s accent just being hinted at through dialogue tags as “vaguely English sounding” made the differences between side characters and main character even more uncomfortable. I daresay MMC dropping Hs and Rs and saying “blimey” and “bugger” would’ve been too obviously cheesy, but then we get lines of dialogue like this:
“You listen well. Demien is dangerous, but don’t wanna kill ya. He could, mind ya, but he doesn’t wanna. Dat der King, he doesn’t suffer lowly humans. Stay away from him.”
“What about Chère? She be at dat meeting?”
On the one hand, it makes in-universe sense that MMC would’ve lost most of his accent after two hundred years living in the USA, and the fact that he was born around the time of the Great Vowel Shift means that modern English is basically a second language to him, so he might as well speak it as the Americans do, but I am still not super-happy about Al being othered in this way, in a book that centers New Orleans culture so heavily.
Honestly, this book is bad but I have to admit I was kind of hooked anyway. If it wasn't for a point I'll get to later, this would have probably been 1.5 or at least 1⭐. As it is, I'm giving it 0.5⭐.
This book really doesn't know what it wants to be. The time period is kinda weird, the author writes like she's trying to make it "old timey" and modern at the same time, the whole binding thing made very little sense (first he says his blood is all she'll crave. then he says she'll still get blood lust for other people. then he says she won't. make up your mind. also, why write a vampire romance if that's what you're gonna go for). This felt like a bunch of popular vampire books thrown together (badly). I will say the similarities to the night world series were kinda fun. The Anne Rice references were fucking painful though. And the main character was giving Bella Swan in the worst way.
The prologue spoils the entire book, the first half nothing happens and then in the second half the book just straight up doesn't make sense.
Oh and the whole thing why they don't kill Nikolai was stupid as well. Not to mention that she somehow defeats him despite having no experience?? And the scene where he just. Leaves. Was so dumb. Or when he tries breaking into her appartment. Or the way the council is treating her. Or the way their whole monarchy thing is going. Point is, what the fuck.
Anyway, the characters were all fucking annoying as well. Damien dude, shut up. I am begging you. I will say that Nikolai and Al were both kinda hot. I'll take it ig. On that note, the names were horrendous. Sybelle Rose? Jojo Mojo? Really?
The writing also just wasn't good and the dialogue made me want to die.
Also can we talk about the whole thing about Damien saying he was only attracted to Lysette because she was basically the wish version of his future soulmate. And them making out infront of his dead ex.
The thing that gave me the rest was him draining her almost fully to make the council happy. How tf is girly still alive. Also the pet humans? I don't wanna kink shame y'all but power dynamics, people! And then she had her whole girl power speech which was honestly just kinda bad.
I also want to throw in here that the whole voodoo thing didn't really feel well researched and was giving "i want to make this white woman quirky by using cultural appropriation". Idk, this whole thing just felt very iffy.
For most of her life Sybella Rose has never felt like she fit in. She was the only girl, raised by her father and six older brothers, who were all successful in their respective careers, whereas Syb isn't sure what she wants to do, so she packs up her life and moves to New Orleans, which immediately feels like home. Her apartment is above JoJo's Mojo voodoo shop, which becomes her first job. Josephine, or JoJo is also her landlord, along with her husband Al, who is the chef next door at Gumbo Gris Gris. On her first night in town she meets Demien. He might rub her the wrong way, but she feels these pull to him. The Binding is not only the title of the book, but a pull between two people fated, or meant to be mates. Author Victoria Clapton created a complex story involving magic, voodoo, ghosts, mates and protecting their home, New Orleans.
The Binding is such a complex and compelling book. I have read a number of books of the same title, but this book is completely different, other than the concept of a set of mates bound by something supernatural. This story is so full of layers and issues. First there is the resident ghost in Sybella's apartment, who has a mission for her. Then there is Demien, the strange pull to him that Sybella feels, his pushing her away, and the other people in town. This book had me turning paging over and over until the end. I loved every page and couldn't put the book down until it was done. Author Victoria Clapton was able to create such a complex story that is compelling and captivating. I recommend this book to anyone who loves New Orleans, the south, vampires, voodoo and food!
Sybella Rose flees from her stifled life to the great and colorful city of New Orleans. It's everything she ever dreamed it would be, including the supernatural side. Taken under her landlords' wings, she has a lovely apartment with a kind ghost and a job at a Voodoo shop and all sorts of delicious food to eat. Demien, one of the most powerful vampires in the city, speaks with her the first day, and he never takes notice of anyone. Sybella feels an irresistible pull to him and cannot get him out of her mind. Neither can her ghost and the king of vampires.
This was a wonderfully written paranormal romance with a gorgeous vampire and a headstrong heroine in New Orleans. I loved the descriptions of the city, especially the little details which usually get left out in other books featuring the place. It gave New Orleans a feeling of being a character itself. The city's history and the Voodoo lore were fabulous. It didn't fall in great boring chunks, but came in bits that fit nicely as the story unfolded. Sybella won me over immediately, and while the prologue already told the reader what her future was like, the journey was well worth it. I adored JoJo and Al. Everyone needs people like those two in their lives, especially one that can cook so well! This was a great first book in the series, and did leave some mysteries for the next books.
Sybella packs up her things and moves to New Orleans. Her father is not happy about it and her brothers are all successful and it didn't seem like they cared about her at all. Once in New Orleans Sybella feels like she is right where she belongs. Meeting Josephine who owns a Voodoo shop and her husband Al who is the chef at Gumbo Gris Gris. She immediately makes friends with these two people and even rents an apartment that's above the voodoo shop and Josephine is her landlord which works out well for all of them. Josephine offers Sybella a job in the voodoo shop and she gets to know her better.
Right away she meets Demien and she knows there's something off about him, especially when Josephine and Al are warning her to stay away from him. But Sybella feels drawn to him and since he keeps seeking out her company, he must be drawn to her also because he doesn't usually chat people up.
You know how they say that New Orleans is full or supernatural? Well according to this book, they're right. Expect ghosts, vampires, witches and magic. The Binding ends up being the pull a vampire and human feel for each other. It's so rare it's thought to be a myth even among vampires.
I do love a romantic vampire story and this one having a very grumpy vampire just made it all the better. This was such a fun read.
The Binding by Victoria Clapton is paranormal romance drenched in New Orleans magic — dark, sensual, and completely addictive.
Sybella Rose moves to New Orleans hoping for a fresh start, but what she finds is a world of spells, spirits, and secrets she never saw coming. Then there’s Demien — the dangerously magnetic vampire who feels like temptation wrapped in sin. Their connection is instant but complicated, bound by something deeper than either of them can explain.
Here’s what makes this book shine: 🔥 Vampire x fated mate chemistry that crackles on every page 💀 The New Orleans setting — haunting, vibrant, and alive 💋 That mix of passion, danger, and destiny done just right 🖤 Beautiful writing that pulls you straight into the atmosphere
I genuinely enjoyed this one — it’s dark, romantic, and moody in all the best ways. A story that feels like a spell — mysterious, passionate, and impossible to shake long after the last page. Definitely recommend if you love paranormal romance with bite and heart.
There’s nothing I love more than a great spooky vampire book set in New Orleans to read during the fall as we get into spooky season.
My absolute favorite thing in a book is when an author immerses you so deeply in a setting that it’s like taking a vacation to that place and THE BINDING had such a great Louisiana vibe, with our MC, Sybella Rose moving to New Orleans for a fresh start where she’s immediately immersed in everything the city has to offer, gumbo and beignets, crème brulee and shrimp boils. I loved reading the lavish descriptions of the French Quarter and the restaurants, which the author describes in wonderful detail, and as Sybella meets some new friends Aloysius and Josephine and realizes the vampires from her favorite novels are real, is it a teen romance come true, or is her life in danger? Demien is the most dangerous vampire in New Orleans, but he’s also connected to her in a way she doesn’t quite understand. With vampires and ghosts, powerful paranormal creatures wanting to control the city and a romance between Demien and Sybella that heats up every page, I loved this! 5/5 stars.
This is the first vampire book I have read in a while and it didn’t disappoint! I absolutely love Demien, the grumpy but hot vampire Prince of New Orleans and Sybella Rose the human girl who struggles to find a place to belong until she decides to live in the city. There she meets some lovely friends and, of course, Demien and that is when her life changes completely.
I love the details and descriptions of New Orleans - it makes me want to visit! The relationship between Sybella and Demien is really romantic. There is no spice but it is not needed as the story is intriguing and satisfactory without it. Loved it!
This was good! Such vivid, colorful descriptions of places and things in New Orleans, I really felt I was back there walking the streets and seeing the sights! I was totally engrossed, and in love with the first half, loving all the beautiful details, but then it started to feel a bit rushed to me as time went on. That being said, it still managed to keep me interested until the end. Overall I enjoyed this little trip to New Orleans, and I will definitely be continuing this series to see what happens next!
Loved the witches, ghosts, voodoo and vampires. I don't care for very dark stories and to my delight, this had a perfect amount of suspense for me. I liked the French Quarter locale. The antagonist was dealt with in a very satisfying way. I also liked the way the heroine didn't poopoo things she didn't understand. She leaned into it and asked questions.
Wow, I didn't expect this. I am pleasantly surprised by this book, it was much better than I thought it would be. I am new to Victoria Clapton's writing and now I'm hooked even though it's more YA in some of its scenes. The storyline is easy to follow and the characters are very easy to relate to. I can't wait to read more by Victoria.
This book is definitely a page turner! I read cover to cover only stopping to sleep! Now I am going to hop on over to travel site and start making arrangements for a trip to New Orleans finally!
I waited a while to get to the point in this book. I cant say I really understand some of the things that happened and I still don’t know what Sybella Rose is. One and done. Good writing skills.
This book gripped me from the minute I picked it up and I literally did not put it down until I was finished! This love story is filled with the supernatural as well as a ton of New Orleans history that makes it so intriguing. I can’t wait to read the next one!
Loved reading this book 📖 I was hooked straight away,it had everything I was looking. Great character development. Highly recommend. I can't wait to start book 2
Very heavy description of New Orleans lore and food. Weak on the plot and everything fell into place very conveniently. I didn’t connect with any of the characters unfortunately but I learned lots of new words.
This is a new author for me and this book definitely gave me the feels and the story and background in a great book. Can't wait to read the next book in the series.
