Dark Road #13

Resignation: A Post-Apocalyptic EMP Survival series 13

Rate this book
Courage isn’t having the strength to go on, it’s going on without having the strength.

Betrayal by one of their own leaves Ben and the others with more questions than answers as they push westward toward Colorado and their home in Durango. Or what’s left of it.

Ben tries to put Martin’s midnight escape and theft of their supplies in the past but soon finds out that won’t be as easy as he’d hoped. Circumstances beyond their control and Martin’s selfishness land them in trouble yet again, forcing Ben, Sandy, and the kids to fight for their survival.

The road home is fraught with peril and only getting worse thanks to dwindling resources and an unrelenting heat wave that threatens their progress. The remaining survivors they encounter are forced to desperate new lows, redefining evil for Ben and his crew. It’s all they can do to find the courage to go on.

Another short book but a lot happened in less than 24hrs.

After seeing Martin’s truck off the road by an old barn the dad Ben & his son went alone to get their map back at the very least.

In the barn was all their stuff but the map, Martin was dying he had been shot and told them the bad guys left to find there where they camped last night but would be back soon. He died from a loss I of blood before he could have redeemed himself.

The dad & son had 7 guys they had to kill, they got some of their stuff but the rest went up in flames as the barn burned down. At least they got the map.

Then after being on the road for a little while the jeep got over heated and they had to stop into a small town for repairs. They went to a small hardware store where an older man & woman lived with their 2 huge dogs. They went to Dad Ben felt things were a little off & he was right when he found a freezer with a persons hand in it! Then when he noticed his kids were all asleep and couldn’t really wake up he found the old lady drugged them. The couple was feeding people to the dogs… and they might have been eating them too.

They killed them and escaped just in time as a mob outside came.

Then things weren’t over because after they had a little rest, painted the top of the trucks to help cool them down & got gas they saw 2 airplanes ✈️ then shortly afterwards a fire storm that they needed to out run!

So ya how all this happened in 24hrs I don’t know 🤷‍♀️ apparently they are just the worlds best super soldiers where they never get hit yet the dad must of killed 100 in 3 weeks and even his 17 year old son has lost count how many he’s killed.

Everything is very best case scenario in these books!

Overview: Ben and Joel ambush the house and find Martin badly beaten and he reveals he gave up the map and plan to six aggressors. Ben and Joel eliminate the threats, recover the atlas, but Martin succumbs to blood loss. Back on the highway, one of the two remaining cars breaks down, forcing the group to search for a hardware store. Inside, they encounter a couple and their two dogs who initially appear protective but later offer help in repairing the car. While the group rests, Ben notices disturbing signs that the couple feed victims to their dogs and possibly themselves. Once the couple realizes Ben has uncovered their secret, they turn their attention to him and Sandy, while the rest of the group, unknowingly drugged by popsicles, are incapacitated. A sudden looter attack on the store diverts attention long enough for Ben and Sandy to neutralize the dogs, the couple, and escape, leaving the looters to strip the store in exchange for their safety. The road ahead remains uneventful until a farm fire erupts while the group is refueling, spreading dangerously close and nearly trapping them. They escape just in time, taking refuge on an overpass that provides a firebreak.

I am going to write this review for all 14 of the books in this series, because the positives and negatives are the same for each book. Each book involves at least one major challenge while the characters fight their way to family and then back home cross country. The challenges are definitely page-turners and I often found myself wondering "how are they going to get out of THIS one?"
The main criticism I have is that the reader has to spend way too much time inside the minds of some of the characters, and these characters worry about the same things, time after time. There could easily have been less books in this series if all the re-hashing of anxieties were removed.

Standout Series

This is a truly standout series in its genre. I’ve read some others of its kind, but the Dark Road series is the best of them. I care about Ben and his family. I care if they make it mostly unscathed home. I care if their home is still standing and their own.
The pacing is mostly excellent with just a few political side rants on occasion to slow things down. (This book didn’t have one.)

I’ve read all the books in this series plus the, unfortunately, ended Cloverdale series. I can’t say the same for similar series. I look forward to the next Dark Road book.

Really enjoy the whole series

To really appreciate this book, you have to start at the beginning of the series. The story is well told, and the characters believable. It makes you think about how you would react in an extreme situation like this.
Each book in the series I was not able to put down until finished, and this latest one was no exception.
Hope that you will enjoy the series as much as I have!

Great read

This latest book in this series was a joy to read. As the series progresses the reader becomes invested in the characters. This feeling of being so visibly attached to the characters is one of the reasons Miller's books are so enjoyable. This whole series is a joy to read.

Another Bruno Miller "special"! Can't wait until the next one!

I have been at fan of Brun
o Miller's books far a long time, and I've read all in his "Dark Road" series, and all of his "Cloverleaf" series. Basically, I'm just waiting on his next book (it's a shame it takes longer to write than to read!).

Another one down

Good book in this series. I was a little disappointed that this wasn't the end of this series. Guess they are going to squeeze another 2, 3, 4, maybe 5 books out of it. Just wondering how long it will take to complete this series, or if I'll still be interested or even remember the series. Sad, was a really good series.

I love this series! Full of excitement around each turn. Didn't see that coming! Traveling right with them as they try to get back to Colorado. Even when they make it back, the work will just begin. Although he left a cabin full of supplies it may not be there when he gets back - then what?
Or if someone else has moved in - ??

As with the last couple of books of this series, this one was short and much of it felt like marking time. The "bumps in the road" have started to become a bit repetitious and most chapters and the end of the book were dominated by the characters' speculations about what lies ahead and if they can survive. We get that...move on...please.

Ben and his family are so close to home!! But will they make it? It seems there is always something that puts their plans and lives in jeopardy. From people trying to off them, man eating dogs, natural disasters to basic car problems. Luckily with help from Ben’s past military experience they all seem to be adapting and surviving. Can’t wait for the next book!

Lame Ending

Was this the last book? If it is then the ending was horrible. I wouldn't have read it if I knew everything was a "guess what happened" type of ending.
Lame ending truly if this is the last in the series.

Great author

The pace of the book is very good. Bruno does a fine job of tying the characters together. It would be difficult to follow and read the book if I hadn't read all of the previous books in the series.

At last a positive ending

No cliffhanger this time. Dangers abound but heading that little voice in your head brings solutions even if you're fooled at first.
