Haunted Love #7

Dancing With a Ghost

Rate this book
Toby

Being an event planner, working at my parents’ exclusive country hotel wasn’t at the top of my career list. Quite frankly, it wasn’t even on it, but when my latest venture, starting my own dance studio went pear shaped, it was suggested I give up my dream and join the family business.

It was bearable. The commute was short, but pandering to the rich and famous, finding only the best for their wedding or wake, I was starting to get itchy feet. In both senses of the word.

But things are going awry, I’m finding things in the weirdest of places and just sometimes, I feel like I’m not really alone.

Is it wishful thinking or is there something else going on here? Something, I’m not sure I want to know the answer to.

Matthias

He’s just my type, the guy with the smart suits, and the dancing feet. Well he would be if I wasn’t dead!

I’ve watched him for a while now though, trying to get his attention. Sometimes I think it’s working, but haunting, that’s hard work right there, and trying to get him to notice me. It's proving a little difficult considering he can’t see me.

I have to find a way to fix that, because I want him to see me, I want to join him as he waltzes across that majestic ballroom.

Most of all, I want to be with him. Easier said than done, but somehow I have to find a way.

It didn't work for me.

Toby felt like a push over.
The whole nurse thing was never really explained hence, didn't
feel resolved and made me feel frustrated.

There was a whole heap of "unnecessary" information or moments.

Seeing has this is a short read that wasted pages and pages of time
we could have had with the two characters building a believable
connection.

Toby is still stuck working a job he doesn't really want.

I'm thinking.. how exactly are you going to get Matthias
registered for a wedding if he technically doesn't exist?
That's just the kind of places my mind go.. I'm sorry.

I wanted more out of the story than I got. Maybe I'm in
a mood. I don't usually do 'grumpy' reviews but
I understand that this is most definitely a grumpy one.

The good
+ The instant connection between Toby and Matty
+ Toby not being scared of Matty
+ Matty throwing himself into his relationship with Toby with no reservations
+ Toby's sister Georgie and her husband
+ Toby's genuine efforts to find out more about Matty
+ Ballroom dancing
+ Toby thinking it'd really suck if their connection depended on penetrative sex

The neutral
o I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. My review remains honest and unbiased
o This is probably way too morbid, but I want to know whether Matty got back his body that had been in stasis somewhere for almost eighty years, or if he just manifested a new one. I like the first option, it's like having a zombie boyfriend

The bad
- Toby's mom was just forgiven out of nowhere
- The whole plotline with Sister Mary made no sense and had no conclusion
-
- Georgie was the best sister, and her complete support of Toby's crazy quest was amazing. So after Matty became human again, I had expected them to run straight to her. Instead, she was just forgotten. Poor Georgie, their biggest supporter right from the start...
- Toby's lifelong dream was to open a dance studio of his own. The book ends with Toby still working the job he doesn't want, and no mention at all of his dance studio. For a book called Dancing With a Ghost, the single dancing scene was definitely insufficient...

Had this book been called Resurrecting My Century-Old Ghost Boyfriend So He Can Teach Me How To Use An iPad I probably would have enjoyed it more. But I still really liked the connection between Toby and Matty. They were very sweet together, and I really like that the author addressed that any kind of bond depending on penetrative sex is weird af. It was a fun read without any real plot, which is good enough for a lazy afternoon.

Toby is a wedding planner, not by choice to be honest, because he’s a dancer. He works hard, only, his mother takes all the credits, as if it is her doing everything runs flawlessly.
The exclusive hotel where all the events take place is also the place that will change Toby’s life.

Strange things are happening, Toby smells something, vanilla and more, and at last, he understands there’s an entity.

Matthias can’t handle how Toby’s mother and others treated him, he has to interfere, even if it takes all his energy.

Toby is smitten with Matthias, the ghost who can materialize for a short time. Just enough time to feel each other. There has to be a way they can be with each other, preferably forever. Matthias is running out of time. Read for yourself where he’s coming from!

For 139 pages there’s a lot of story to enjoy, and I loved it all. There was even space for some secondary matters, and also quite entertaining. I’m in awe, to be honest, so many details in such a short read.
The whole concept was lovely. A ghost with a chance to get his forever, if only he could find ‘the one’
Both characters are adorable, the scenery and storyline original, the writing excellent, and the slight development quite enough!
Overall a charming story with a happy ending!

I received an ARC from BookSirens and this is my honest review.

Let me start with the good things about this book:
A ghost playing shenanigans with hiding notes, tipping over vases, and whispered words.
A sweet smell that lingers in the air when Matthias (our friendly ghost) is nearby.
Toby being stressed out about his mother commanding his every move and taking credit for his work.
Matthias being Toby’s hidden knight in shining armor protecting him from evil exes.
A ghost that had never experienced being intimate with another being, let alone a man, before his death - slowly falling into learning skinship and closeness with another.

That all being said, this book lost my attention after 50%. I started feeling like things were being rushed, it was kind of disconnected, and there was a lot going on for that to happen.
I liked Toby’s sister Georgie, and she so easily believed him and helped him find answers to questions he had about Matthias’ mysterious death. She literally disappeared after that night. Not being fully mentioned again until the epilogue in passing. I found most characters were like this.
Toby’s father was referenced, but never shown and never any words from him.
Toby’s mother was a stubborn and demanding woman in the beginning, but all of a sudden became a very understanding and compassionate woman after Toby said a few words to her. There was no further discussion, nothing, just a changed woman.
Toby in the beginning felt to me to be angelic, kind, shy, and eager to please. As the book went on he became selfish to me. Wanting Matthias always by his side and for him to never take space. Toby became a bit pushy for my liking.
Matthias kind of flitted in between that ghost from the early 1900’s with the correct verbiage and misunderstanding of how modern amenities worked, to kind of just being natural and easy with the lingo and actions. It was weird how he one second went from being like oh no, it was illegal to be with a man in my time I have no idea how this works, I can’t. To the very next second being all it’s fine. Kiss me. That will help. Kiss me. 🤔
I won’t touch the harvesting souls thing or Sister Mary.

I struggled to want to write this review, but it’s honest and it is what it is.
Thank you for the read. My first ‘ghost’ of the season. 👻

Not a lot of dancing...

This was so cute. Not gonna lie, if you are looking for a quick and sweet read, this story is for you.

There will be slight spoilers

In here we have Toby, a dancer who's studio failed and so is now working for his mother at a hotel. He does not like technology and is pretty beaten down by his overbearing mother.

And Matty, a not really a ghost, who died in the war and is "haunting" the hotel. He is shy, gay, and a virgin who has not even kissed before.

These two meet and its instalove.

Things happen, Toby and his sister/bil do some research and find out that there was an angel of mercy working at the hospital (which is now the hotel) but the government did nothing but bury empty coffins.

Toby and Matty share some ghost loving with a few kisses and some hand jobs and spend a lot of time together, thinking they had a year before Matty disappeared. They were wrong.

For some odd reason, after being told that Matty was gonna spend time away to recharge, Toby basically pitches a fit and stays away for an entire weekend. That loss of connection makes Matty disappear completely.

Y'all know what happens next, crying and declarations of love. And surprise, Matty is back and in his original body, burns and all from the accident that put him in the hospital to begin with.

I was hoping that this was a zombie sort of body, cause its been 79 years but no, his molecules had been pulled apart to keep him in limbo and not dead. Hence my not really a ghost comment.

The epilogue was weird. Not the whole thing, but it did basically rehash what we just read. I mean, I could see this needed in a long book, but I pretty much could remember what I already read.

Anyways, I really liked this one but it does have editing issues. Like the random The End stuck in a sentence. It was not bad enough to pull me out of the story but it was enough for me to notice.

I found this book easy to read and very enjoyable. It was a fun, slow-burn romance with lots of intrigue around Matthias, who has been a ghost since WWII. Toby is an event manager at the manor house which Matthias haunts, and is lovely, and it was easy to see how perfect they were for each other. I liked how the author dealt with the concerns Matthias had from his 1940s life about being with Toby and the support and understanding Toby showed him. There were also some great secondary characters, although Toby’s parents left something to be desired, especially his mother, but his sister was terrific and I loved how she supported Toby. This was a sweet, fun story with some heat and angst before the mystery is solved and Toby and Matthias find their HEA. Well worth the read.
I received a copy of this book from GRR to review, and this is my honest and voluntary opinion.

I’m wasn’t sure what to expect from this as it is Alex’s first pnr, but from the first chapter I loved it. I found Toby and Matthias extremely sweet.
Matthias has been a ghost for 79 years needing to find his soul mate to be fully alive again. I really enjoyed him sticking up for Toby (in his own way) and his little tricks. I loved that he had a scent the Toby kept smelling before matty showed himself to him. I got butterflies watching these two form and build their bond. Alex just had this way of making me fall in love and making my eyes leak. This was such a beautiful and loving read.

A wonderfully sweet story!

This book is amazing! The heartfelt story of Toby and Matthias is full of love, loss and new beginnings. Matthias was an airman in World War II, stuck in limbo until he finds his kindred soul. Toby is working at the family’s hotel and will meet Matthias in a bit of a shocking way. The two will build a friendship that becomes so much more and I loved the way it developed as Matthias’s tale unfolds. There will be bumps and tears along the journey but the way they find their way back to each other is amazing!

I read an ARC copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.

I love Toby and Matthias!!!
OMG! The first chapter alone had me frustrated and angry at Toby's mother. Talk about shock at how she treats her own child. Toby is trying to make it through each day working at his mothers hotel. She is very demanding of him.
Then there is Matthias the ghost who has been following Toby for some time now. The attraction he has for Toby is very strong. He's also very protective of of Toby. It's one of the reason Toby starts noticing things moving and disappearing. You'd think Toby would be afraid with all the happening ls going on. But no, he takes it in stride.
I truly enjoyed this story. Alex did an amazing job with how she brought these two together. The time Line was perfect. The mystery of how Matthias could become human again. These two had a bond like no other. They were more alive and happy when together than when not. It was fascinating to read. I couldn't put it down once I started. This just goes to show It's amazing how just a touch can bring another person back to life. I highly recommend this book! I promise you'll love it just as much as I did. ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆☆

I loved this book. It’s completely different from Alex’s previous books, but don’t let that put you off; it’s a beautifully written light & easy read, with that little bit of snark peppered throughout the book that we all love.

A gentle love story bringing together Toby & Matty (Matthias) from very different era’s, WWII to modern day. We get a little of everything, from solving the mystery of why Matty is a ghost & haunting Toby to exploring Love & finding your kindred spirit.

There is a gentle softness & innocence to Alex’s writing in this book which in its own way is just as powerful as her grittier writing & whilst I knew there would be a HEA the sorrow was palpable as we see our MC’s believe they have missed their chance to fix their ‘ghostly’ problem.

Alex, I’m sounding like a stuck record, but I love your writing, in all it’s forms; It always evokes emotion. Thank you for another wonderful read.

This is a really sweet love story between Matty and Toby. It’s perfect for anyone who’d like a ghost story romance without any frights! Great to see this author trying a new genre and something lighter too.

When you finish this story about Toby and Matty, the phrase "Til death do us part" will take on a whole new meaning for these two. I wasn't sure how Alex J. Adams would pull off an HEA for these two, but she does in the sweetest and steamiest of ways. This series continues its winning streak.

Absolutely loved this light love story. Matty and Toby were so sweet together. Never imagining to ever see things that don't make sense but then to see what you can't believe and fall in love with the whole idea of a ghost was more than anything Toby could imagine. The history of Mattias (Matty) life and how he was able to be a ghost for as long as he was, was a concept that was more than interesting as well as confusing. The two of them were special from the beginning and finding their way to forever. Great read

An absolutely beautiful story! Toby is the head event planner for the hotel his family owns. Matthias is a ghost, sort of, that had been a member of the RAF during WW II. A bit of an issue for Matty due to having fallen for Toby. While trying to determine a way for him to become a whole person again, he begins to manifest in the presence of Toby. This story leads you through the two getting to know each other and figure out what happened to Matty 79 years ago.

This story is sweet with a twist of unknown forces working in the background to get Matty to his kindred spirit.

If you want a quick, sweet story with a ghostly presence to get ready for Halloween, this is your book.

Awe, I absolutely love Alex J. Adams writing style and Dancing With A Ghost was such a sweet read. I love stories with a crooning atmosphere& I also love the Lindy hop era! So reading this was an absolute delight. It felt really sentimental as the aesthetic was much like the one from my grandparents time. I really like getting into all the mysteries of the Haunted Loved series and having read a few already Alex's contribution was just as ominous in the mystery surrounding Matthias's death as the rest. I really liked Matthias and Toby, they had such a unique bond that transpired through emotional hues throughout the book. Their tie to eachother was so strong that the could distinguish how the other felt at any given time. Although Toby did have a bit of wobble nearing the end which made me frustrated with him and put a dampener on their union. We got a lovely long epilogue that wrapped everything up though. This was a lovely quick read with loads of nice swoon worthy moments. Dancing With A Ghost has a healthy dose of ghost loving that will have your toes curling with excitement. This was a great autumn afternoon read to stave off some boredom from the school holidays.

I wasn't sure what to expect from a ghost story and how this would pan out. I have to admit I was extremely curious though. Toby and Matthias' story was captivating and extremely interesting. They had to have a connection in order for Matthias to be real again. But the thing about it is... how do I explain it? I felt like their connection was so intertwined that Matthias had to go into his situation just to meet Toby. Why? Because they were so clearly meant to be.

The story is beautiful and creative. The ending was epic. My face literally hurt from the smile on my face when Matthias... well I won't give it away. But yeah... an epic ending.

I have to say I've read every one of Alex J. Adams books and I have watched her become a "baby author" to where she is now. She's no longer a baby author to me. I love her stories because she writes about such realities that can be hard to read. Toby and Matthias was a beautiful love story that I couldn't put down. She still put reality in this book but it was much softer than her other stories. That said, this story showed that Alex J. Adams can write anything she wants and be a success. But whatever she writes she puts so much care into her characters. She writes situations that can be difficult but the understanding and compassion that goes into each character can never, ever be questioned. I won't say what Matthias had to deal with but it is something that can make someone extremely self-conscious. How Alex wrote Toby handling it... Kudos Alex, Kudos!

Independent reviewer for Book Sirens, I was gifted my copy of this book.

I think I've read every book Alex J Adams has written, following her from the very beginning. And as she produces more work, it's very obviously her skill is growing, and switching from third person to first person seems to have done the trick!

This is part of a multi author series, With A Ghost as the theme. I have read one other. They are all unrelated save the title.

I loved this, I really did.

I loved that Toby knew some thing was going on at the hotel, but couldn't put his finger on what. Not until Matthias makes himself known. I loved that it took touching Toby for Matty to be able to hold his form.

I loved how the relationship between them grew. It wasn't a love at first sight thing, but a growing over time thing and I loved how Toby introduced Matty into the ways men can be together.

I loved what we learnt about how Matty came to be stuck! That really intrigued me! A few other men's names were mentioned and it makes me wonder! All good things, but I hate to be left with unanswered questions!

I read this in one sitting, I could not put it down!

This was an enjoyable, but somewhat disjointed read. Untangling the mystery of what happened to Matty that turned him into a ghost and the history of the manor was interesting. This story leads reader through the two getting to know each other, and figure out what happened to Matty 79 years ago. At its core the story is a love story between Matty and Toby. I felt the story was very light on the details that could have taken this book to the next level. For example, the story builds to a climax when Toby finally stands up to his mother, however the interaction is a non-event where it could have been so much more. Some with additional detail on the history of the mansion and events that transpired 79 years ago, not to mention more about Sister Mary. The story does wrap up the loose ends and provide a solution to the mystery, but it was rather quickly resolved and lacked details. Overall an enjoyable, “light” read. I was provided a copy of this book by the author, and am leaving this review that reflects my opinion of the book voluntarily.

Haunted love.

I  liked the supernatural elements to the story, Matty being a ghost, and all the ghostly happenings. However, there were some anomalies in the story which just plain annoyed me. For example, Toby wanting to be a dance teacher and nothing coming of it, also, his actions when Matty said he needed sometime to himself. Talk about needy, Toby very nearly loses Matty due to his rather petty response. The story is quite emotional in parts, like when Toby visits the graveyard. The ending was a nice touch, totally bringing Matty into modern times. However, the book as a whole, was somewhat 'bitty.' It occasionally seemed to be following one idea, and then going off on a tangent, and the thread of the story lost. Saying that, I did enjoy Matty as a character, and likes his reaction to modern times which he embraced enthusiastically. Cute ending.

I received an ARC of this story which in no way influenced my opinion.

A very sweet fated romance

This was a lovely short read. Toby and Marty were lovable characters who, whilst not perfect, worked really well together. Compared to some ghost stories I’ve read there was actually a lot of interaction between Marty and Toby and I think that really helped build a genuine sense of love between them. Yes, there were some elements of being fated to each other and they clearly had an immediate connection but we also got to see that develop into something stronger and more meaningful. I did feel the ending was a touch rushed. It didn’t make me dislike it but I think if there had been maybe another 5,000 or so words building out the ending a bit more then this would have been a definite 5 star. No matter though, this was still a book I enjoyed. It was very much a cozy read.

While the premise is intriguing and there are quite a few well written emotional moments, overall the writing is on the dull side. I couldn’t really connect with the MCs as we didn’t have a lot of backstory to build up a connection. There are things that need more extrapolation and other things that do not serve to advance the storyline. A good editor probably would have helped. This is clearly a new author and the writing skills exhibited here need quite a bit of polishing. There were a couple times I nearly gave up but as I said, the premise was intriguing and I wanted to see how the author worked the plot out.

Toby loved to dance but his studio didn’t make it so he became the events planner at his parents hotel but his mother always took the credit for his work. Matthias was stuck in limbo for 80 years or until he could get someone to love him unconditionally and his kindred soul because he was “harvested” wrong. Toby was finally able to see and talk to him but he knew that they might not have enough time to connect then he was no more. Sister Mary asked Toby if he wanted to see Matthias one last time and said yes, kept crying telling Matthias he loved him and how was he going to live without him. But Matthias became human and they had their love story!

What a great book. Toby is an event planner at his parents hotel. Matthias is a ghost who passed during world war 2. Matty had a find his soulmate in order to become human again. I loved the interaction between them, especially since Toby was the only one who could see him. Loved this story and looking forward to reading more from this author.

It seems like ghost stories either end with a rebirth, revival or MC dying to join them. The whole revival thing didn't really compute. I thought it would go the death route with the ex. I liked the sister's support. The mother felt a bit glossed over after the confrontation. It was alright. Another one off the TBR.

This was a cute, if disjointed, read. I really liked how earnest Toby was about finding answers for Matty. He was also VERY accepting of the fact that a ghost suddenly has some interest in him.

Unraveling the mystery of Matty was fun to read. Learning about how he came to be a ghost and the research into the history of the manor was interesting. I found the interactions between Matty and Toby delightful. I was hoping for the best outcome for them through the whole book.

I will say that the story was light on details about some things. At one point, Toby finally stands up to his mother, a moment we’ve all been waiting for, and then nothing. We just some time passing and everything is okay. There isn’t a lot of detail about what exactly happened to Matty either, and while we do get a solution, I wish there had been more detail about what exactly Sister Mary was and where she came from.

Still, this was an enjoyable read and I genuinely like Matty and Toby together. 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.

I'm really loving this multi-author series and this was a great addition.

Toby is a dancer and is working fir his family business doing weddings and events. He is such a sweetheart heart and I really felt for him. He left everything behind to work there. His family don't know he's gay.

I loved the first interaction with the ghost, Matthias. He has such a sad story and is nearing 80 years dead. He knows he can regain his body and is doing what he can for it to happen. He is a good match for, Toby. He brings out the best in him and supports him. The ghost sex was hot too! I was so worried about how he would become human.

I loved the book, but somethings were left unanswered. We don't find out about the nurse's motives, or see how his mother reacts to their relationship. It is more tell me, instead of show me. It was a beautiful ending and I just love this series!

I received a copy of this book from Gay Romance Reviews, and this is my honest review.
