This was fantastic... Well the most part.

I really enjoyed this twist on the character. You could even say that in the beginning, this was a more realistic take on the character.

I really enjoyed all the twists on the villains (except the last one). I thought for sure Joker was going to be one of them. But he wasn't, and I'm so glad. We get to see twists on that character all the time. Why not give some of the other villains some time to shine?

This may just be me, but I feel like the newest Batman movie took some inspiration from this series. Maybe, I'm wrong but it felt like there were some scenes from the movie taken strait out of the book.

Ok, so now let's get in to some negative. But I'm going to have to talk about some spoilers. So you have been warned.

In the last volume of the book, it's goes completely off the rails. And to be honest, it's hurting my score for the whole collection. The villain this time around is Two-Face. To be honest, I have never really been a fan of the character, so this wasn't going to me win me over. But, the way they did the character. Was just so odd for me.

I mean, bringing people back from the dead? The whole thing with the sister. Honestly, I just couldn't wait till it was over.

Because of the last volume I think, I'm gonna have to give this a 3.5. I still recommend though, just know that the last volume wasn't all that great in my opinion. Anyways, I leave you with Alfred:

Earth One was supposed to be a "reboot" of sorts. Taking the common characters and keeping most of their backgrounds the same, but with subtle differences. Geoff Johns does a superb job with Batman:Earth One. This is the collected HC version of the 3 volume series.

Not only is the writing superb, but the artwork is also excellent. A great combination. In this setting Alfred is a former British Royal Marine Commando who, due to his friendship with Dr. Wayne, takes over Bruce's upbringing after their murder.
This Batman is just learning the ropes. He is not the supreme fighter or even a competent detective. He is just a man trying to figure out how to avenge his parents. But as the story develops we see Batman getting better and learning.

The first volume covers the development of Batman as a crime fighter and how he meets Gordon. The twin enemies of the serial killer and Mayor Oswald Cobblepot are the villains of this story.

The Second volume has Batman meeting Killer Croc and having to do battle with the Riddler.

The Third volume covers the Two-Face story with a strange twist, as well as introducing Clayface.

All three volumes will be at once familiar and different. The alternate Earth One universe will not disappoint any fan of Batman. Kudos to Geoff Johns for writing a great comic and superb artwork to go along with it.

We've had multiple revisions of Batman's origin and here's another one. I think the best way to think of this is a remix or a DC version of Marvel's Ultimate line, as there are parts of Batman's mythos Johns is trying to retroactively tie neatly together. Do these changes make the story better? I'm leaning towards no. This is the Complete 3 volume collection of the previous GNs. But for me, the story lacks payoff, it is open-ended if Johns and Frank want to revisit the world but these changes, particularly to Harvey probably need another volume to completely resolve. And it's hard to know where DC stand on this, as it seems like they've given up on this Earth One prestige format book concept. This feels like another aborted attempt at a modern refresh, after All-Star Batman and Robin, the Boy Wonder, so from that lens, I'm almost like why bother with this. There isn't anything inherently new or different, just a remix or refresh of old ideas that doesn't give a proper ending either, just like All Star Batman and Robin.

Frank does nice art at least and it's nice to see him spend an extended time on Batman here.

Geoff Johns should be charged with writing all superhero origin stories going forward. When given the opportunity to reintroduce a known quantity to a bored audience, the man excels.

Batman: Earth One is an Elseworlds take on the Batman mythos, though it is, at first, barely changed from the standard Bat-origin. Rich kid Bruce Wayne, parents murdered, takes up masked avenger mantle, helped by Alfred, and so on. But Johns makes a number of slight shifts that tip the dominoes until, by the end of this three-volume omnibus, we're in entirely different Bat-territory.

And it's fantastic! Each little twist is so smart and subtle that you barely notice until suddenly everything is different. It helps that Batman: Earth One is expertly plotted - this isn't a new origin purely because origin stories are fun. This complete collection contains a trilogy of self-contained mysteries with overarching connections. It's really a trio of brilliant Batman stories, each one a huge success. Have a friend who's interested in Batman but hasn't read any of the comics? Hand them this collection.

Enough about the caliber of the writing: let's talk about how Gary Frank should be illustrating every Batman comic. The man just gets what a Batman comic should look like. Grim and dark, but with clear lines, action-packed panels, and expressive emotions. Simply superb.

Simply loved this modern take on Batsy, and ESPECIALLY Alfred cuz dam was he a badass.
The art was great, and the coloring just brilliant. Moreover, the stories were nice and kept me entertained. It deserves the solid rating.

Is Batman: Earth One odd? Yes. Does it do a good job of taking existing material and making new twists out of it? Yes. Very recommended for all Bat-Fans out there.

Wow- that was one HELL of a comic-book experience! I’ve always loved Geoff Johns writing(Flashpoint). So, when you get him to write Batman’s origin story- you know it’s going to be an amazingly solid story! And this- this did NOT disappoint! I loved all of the little differences and things that made this such an original take on the character! Bruce is incredibly thoughtful and nice in this comic! I love what they did with characters like Killed Croc and especially Bullock! The pacing was super quick and the writing and action are top-tier! I know that some people are pretty decisive on the ending feeling rushed and some of the twists being obvious- but I LOVED everything about this comic! Not only is it one of the best looking graphic novels- but it’s also one of the best written! Absolutely pick this up if you have any interest in comics OR Batman- it’s essential reading! 5/5 Stars!

This was a pretty neat take on Batman. I picked it up because I had enjoyed the Wonder Woman Earth One collection so much. About a third of the way in, I think I had the story figured out. That's not a put down on the book, it was just something that happened. I still enjoyed the ride.

The story was good, kept my interest, waiting to see what happened next. The art was also really good. The characters looked like they could be real people. Nerd alert: I didn't much care for the Batmobile in this story, I mean the way it looked, like not a real car.

If you like, or used to like, comic books, I recommend this one. You get the whole story in one book.

Throughout the story, you can see a more human Bruce, thus a more realistic Batman. Unlike other Batman narratives, Earth 1 can show you an environment that looks more like our world, and not like a fantastic one. It makes you feel hope, courage, and determination. I guess all of us carry a Batman like this one into ourselves.

This was awesome. Such a cool reimagining of the Batman mythos with a ton of twists and surprises throughout.

A little rushed toward the end and sort of seemed like Johns was throwing spaghetti at the wall. But regardless this was a fantastic bat-read.

Loved the reimagining of Batman's origin, the twist on the known characters (familiar yet with new traits and different background stories), and the fact that the three volumes work as separate stories, with their own villains, but build up on each other shaping the main character into its ultimate superhero status.
All that paired with excellent storytelling and amazing illustrations.

Usually not a fan of “gritty,” “real-world” Batman stories, so I’ve been wary of reading this one for a while, but the structure of the art and writing blew me away. The art was extremely cinematic and the story did not have a narrator, but was completely dialogue-driven which was a surprise and really elevated the book.
Gary Frank’s art is simply incredible.

~Spoilers (no specifics)~

The only reason I give this book 4 stars is because the ending was extremely poor. I know that open-endings are a consequence of the comic book medium, but while the entirety of the third volume was more wild, flashier, and absurd than it’s predecessors, the end was the opportunity to rein it back in and end it with the convincing emotional punch that made the book so great.
Sadly, I think that this opportunity was completely wasted in favor of a boring “allies- origin” splash page and a preview scene for a fourth book that may or may not happen.

Totally irrelevant to the actual book, but I hope whoever designed the paperback cover is ashamed of how busy they made it. Drains all the elegance out of the art.

Brilliant artwork from Gary Frank as usual, so visually the book is immaculate.

Storywise, though, while a fun diversion, I did not find it different or unique enougth to stand out from the myriad of Batman origins interpretations we've had for decades. It treads very much familiar ground, aside form the occasional different take on some characters.

Overall doesn't offer anything new to the seasoned reader aside form a pleaseant diversion that would be instantly forgottable, if not for the gorgeous artwork by Gary Frank and colorist Brad Anderson.

I didn't know what to expect from this but I came out pleasantly surprised. A great Batman origin story with some great new and old villains. I love Batman's portrayal, he's a normal human being! I know that's the case in every other Batman comic but I felt as if I could properly connect to him.

In "Batman: Earth One", Geoff Johns and Gary Frank present their take on Batman's origin and first year of fighting crime. When spoiled rich kid Bruce Wayne's parents are shot dead in a mugging gone wrong, Bruce is raised by former British Royal Marine Alfred Pennyworth. Obsessed with finding the man responsible for the murder of his parents, Bruce begins stalking the streets of Gotham at night as Batman, and with the help of Alfred, he slowly becomes a capable crime-fighter and builds his own network of allies. The absolute best thing about "Batman: Earth One" for me is the artwork. Gary Frank's art is masterfully detailed, and there are plenty of sequences where you can follow the story seamlessly without even reading the dialogue. In regards to the story and characters, the origin of Batman is pretty much the same as it always has been, but there are plenty of interesting changes to the character. Bruce has noble intentions, but is very inexperienced, Alfred is much more tough than he normally is, and Gordon starts off as uncharacteristically corrupt, gradually morphing into the righteous cop we know him as. Some might find those takes on the characters a bit off-putting, but to me, it never comes across as Geoff Johns misunderstanding the characters - he just wants to start them off in an unfamiliar place to surprise the readers. The standout book of the series is definetely Book Two, where Batman goes up against The Riddler. It's an amazing Batman story and a very bold take on The Riddler, and it's very easy to see how this book inspired Matt Reeves' "The Batman". What holds me from giving this series five stars is that Book One and Three are a little rocky. Book One is the one that is the most radically different from the status quo with an inept Batman and a corrupt Gordon, and even though it's the point, it's still tough to read. Book Three features this continuity's version of Two-Face and Bruce's confrontation with the Arkham family and its history of mental illness. In this continuity, Martha Wayne is a descendant of the Arkham family, and rumours have it that the family has been cursed with madness every generation. A mysterious figure from the past believes that Bruce taking up the mantle of Batman is just another manifestation of the Arkham curse. While I think that this is a very interesting take, it becomes very overt and takes up almost all of Book Three, and I think the time spent on this plotline could have been spent better on fleshing out this version of Two-Face. If you're up for an interesting take on the Batman mythos, or if you liked "The Batman", definetely give this one a read.

I'm going to start off by saying I think the premise of this series is rather silly. Earth One apparently was an attempt to create more grounded versions of superheroes fit for a 21st century audience. I don't get the point of doing this, especially for Batman, because, haven't we done this before? Isn't this basically what Miller's Year One and Nolan's DK trilogy did? Batman is a pretty grounded character already, and I didn't think this book was that much more grounded then those stories. Definitely was shallower as far as characterization goes. Ridiculous release schedule too. But whatever. How are the books?

Vol 1
I liked this one enough. It echoes the DK trilogy pretty strongly as far as tone goes. Somewhat rushed, like the writers had a lot of ideas but not much space to put them. Also, surprisingly, I felt like Batmans characterization was given short shrift here. I really liked Alfred and Harvey Bullock a lot. I had pretty mixed feelings about the weird Birthday themed serial killer villain. He was very disturbing. Memorable for sure. Made for a intense read. But, when say, the films the Batman and the Dark Knight used this sort of disturbing villain, it felt like there was a point to them. They served the story and themes. There was something to learn from the heroes battles with them. This guy? Besides Bullock getting traumatized, not really. He was just weird. Another thing I was mixed on was this books echoing of Year One in places. Less then you'd expect though. It is more orginal then you'd expect though. I really liked the bit where Alfred shot Penguin at the end. That whole scene was really cool. Fight scenes are well done too. I'd rate this 3.5 stars.

Vol 2
I quite liked this one. I thought Bruce was given more character development, I thought the Riddler was well done, idk I don't have a lot to say about this one. It was good. Some cool paneling towards the end, a good climactic showdown. Definitely was a big inspiration for Reeves' masterpiece film. Best in the series. Its nowhere near Long Halloween or Year One, but it's a solid four stars.

Vol 3
I was pretty conflicted on this one. I really liked it until it ended. Adrian Arkham was really interesting but the twist at the end that he was actually Clayface pretending to be Adrian ruined him. That reveal killed the emotional impact of the character, didn't add to the story at all, made no sense, and seriously hurt the "grounded" approach this series was taking. The sorta epilogue at the end also crammed in a bunch of stuff that wasn't set up, and won't have any payoff as the series is over. This whole series felt like the writer had a bunch of ideas but only three short graphic novels with a terrible release schedule to cram them in. I also didn't like how Harvey Bullock has no resolution. And Alfred was annoying. All that said, this wasn't an unpleasant read. I really liked this interpretation of Two Face. I liked the Batmobile scene. I liked the reinterpretation of Arkham Asylum. Honestly, I liked most of it until the end. Honestly this series could have used another volume.

Overall, this despite the disappointing ending this is a decent series. I've gotta say too, the art, though no Tim Sale or David Mazzucchelli, is good. This is a series worth reading. It's nowhere near Year One, Long Halloween, or Dark Victory though. If you want to start reading batman, read those first.

DC has tried, for YEARS, to get this Elseworlds-esque imprint off the ground and their 'Trinity' has been the only ones that could solidly stick the landing.

Marvel had the 'Ultimate' universe. They took classic characters and updated them to the modern age. Not to be outdone, DC tagged in with Earth One. Yes, it was about a decade from the creation of the Marvel Ultimate line to the birth of DC's 'Earth One', but stuff happens. The time separating the two gave DC a chance to see what missteps Marvel made. They could also throw money at the best writers/artists for their stories. It feels like it all fell into place for the Batman volumes.
----------
All three volumes here and they're all SOLID. We have a origin story that works on humanizing such a mythic character in the DC Universe. When was the last time you saw Batman mistime a leap or have something from his utility belt misfire? Exactly. Let's not forget the beatings. An untrained, unarmored average guy is going to be bruised and bleeding almost all the time.

I love how across all three volumes we get the slow build of the Batman support system (soon to be called 'The Outsiders'). This was a super fun read and almost finished too quick. The story was left open ended enough that there could be a 4th volume, if sales are strong enough.

Bonus: Catwoman in bright pink/purple leggings and a Cheshire mask? Different.
Bonus Bonus: Bat-Dog makes an appearance!

Always fun to see comics that some movies are based off without prior knowledge. This was really great, especially because it never shoved the bit into your face. The idea of Earth One is to update various heroes origins and stories to a more modern and practical standard, and this comic did this extremely well without constantly being like "LOOK HOW DIFERENT IT IS!!! Alfred is different!!! Croc is a good guy!!! Gordon used to be part of the problem!!! Batman is clumsy! Catwoman has a different outfit! Penguin is the mayor!" It just showed you. It was up to you how you reacted to it. It made me think of Flashpoint and how disappointed I was in that comic because of how often they shoved your face in how cool it was that things were different. By the end of Batman Earth One, It really did still feel like you were reading just another batman comic, one that was original but still very familiar. Also, wow wow wow the art in this was great. I've seen the artists work in several other comics but his comic combined with the great coloring was super good. I stared at the full page of Corpse-Harvey-Two-Face for a seriously long time because even though I suspected already that it was just a dead body Jessica had dug up, it was seriously one of the most unnerving images of Two-Face I have ever seen in the best way. Seriously great, I know the other comics in the Earth One series will not hold a candle to this one, but I am really eager to blow through them.

New takes on Batman rarely interest me, but I think Geoff Johns and Gary Frank did what they could to make this somewhat engaging to read. The first volume is probably the one that most kept my attention, with some interesting new conceptualizations that don't differ to significantly from the more classic iterations. Alfred is probably the most interesting character based on the changes, switching from the sardonic yet faithful butler to hardened veteran who is completely out of his zone with parenting the newly orphaned Bruce Wayne. Gary Frank's artwork is quite sharp throughout - the action scenes, character designs and cityscapes all look wonderful.

The subsequent volumes were much more of a mixed bag for me, though they also manage to build on the good stuff of the first volume. Some changes (like the Two Face stuff) is not really that interesting or subversive, while others feel like a good way to modernize.

I am ultimately a bit confused as to what DC was trying to do with these Earth One comics, since it doesn't really have the sprawling quality of Marvel's Ultimate Universe that made it appealing for new readers at the time. Re-telling the stories of such a classic superhero sound like the grounds for a mess, but Johns does a decent job telling an early Batman story without feeling like it's too much of a rehash.

You would imagine that re-hashing the early days of Batman and the origins of the many Gothamites we know could get stale pretty quickly, but what makes it special every time is the unique angles different writers take. And what we have here goes one step further in twisting the characters we know for something uniquely fresh, but crucially sticking to the foundational make-up of what makes the story of The Dark Knight so compelling.

His strength, intellect and pursuit of justice; Each book tackles a different aspect of Batman that needs to be honed and perfected, with the backdrop of a gritty crime that in all cases involves the stepping up of a classic rogue.

It is absolutely fantastic, I could not put it down. I have never loved Harvey Bullock so much. I have always had a soft spot for Killer Croc and this just deepens that love. And I can clearly see inspiration here for what went on to create “The Batman” (2022). The art is incredible, the stories never pull any punches and it is pretty much perfection.

3.5, rounded up.

A tough one to rate. First off, this art is AMAZE-BALLS. Like, 3 of those 3.5 stars are for the art. The linework and ink/color is phenomenal. Crisp lines, vibrant or dark coloring when it needs to be, and the palettes they use work so well for this story.

As for the actual meat of the comic, it's another B-Man origin, with a couple of fresh twists, but we've heard the bones of this story dozens of times. I will admit, Alfred is a bona-fide UNIT in this one, though. Volumes 1 and 2 were fine, story-wise. A couple of good moments, more in 1 than 2. I really did not care for 3 at all, though. That felt like they knew they were finishing up the miniseries, and just crammed as many nods and cameos as they could.

I think I'd recommend volume 1 to most people. For the others, if you're a completionist like me, or if you can enjoy some terrific art alongside some middling story, go for the rest.

Geoff Johns wrote some good stories about a guy who looks a lot like Batman. Gary Frank drew the heck out of them.

I don't necessarily agree with all the choices Johns made, but the only thing unforgivable is Catwoman's costume, and that's probably more on Franks.

As an origin story for a version of Batman, Earth One - all 3 volumes together - does pretty well. It has some strong emotional beats, some changes to the canon that work surprisingly well (along with some that really don't), and it stays faithful to the big picture.

I've often been critical of Geoff Johns' handling of Batman in other books. He had a tendency to write him as a real asshole, and that's just not who he is...not really. A lot of that I think was because he tends to use Batman as an antagonist/foil for heroes he wants to build up: "oh look, even the mighty Batman can be wrong sometimes..." But Earth One? Pretty good. Would recommend. 4.5 stars, rounded up because I was pleasantly surprised.
