I read this book as part of my research on stroke, but discovered something so much larger. This is perhaps the single-most moving account of resilience through struggle that I have ever read and I am drawn to such books. "Slow Dance" touches on all of the important matters of life: love, self-identity, grief, suffering, and equally joy. Because Bonnie Sheer Klein includes excerpts from journal entries made by family members and friends, as well as medical notes, along with her own inner explorations… the feeling is akin to watching a documentary film… those snippets of discovery from multiple perspectives, which we as readers shape into meaning. This is a deeply satisfying read and fully moving experience.
I'm not completely finished reading yet but Slow Dance is by far one of the most interesting and inspiring stories I have read thus far. Klein does an amazing job telling her story and shows great courage in re-living the most difficult times in her life. This book especially stands out to me as a future Speech Pathologist and helping me catch a glimpse of how I will be able to touch others lives. One thing I will say though, it's heartbreaking to think of the people without the advantages Klein had, such as being married to a physician and being so well known.
What an inspirational book. Bonnie Klein tells of her crippling stroke and how friends, family and the health care system rallied around to help her. She had an incredible road back to a full and active life. Obviously a woman of great strength and courage!!
