In a world of rising magic, an unseen battle commences. The Gods of Gritheim release their instruments – for good and evil. While many scoff at witchcraft and sorcery, Josse and Leonné have witnessed it firsthand. Thrown together by prophesy they must learn to wield their secret magic, to defend not only themselves but the kingdom of mortals. Wraiths, known as Drackarts, do the bidding of Guiscard D’Abernon and his sorceress wife, Orella, but the masters behind these puppets are the ones set on its destruction. The Immortals of Gritheim are on the rise, seeking ultimate power and control; they care not how many thousands will be slaughtered in their path. Only the Redeemers stand in their way. Josse and Leonné must overcome their dislike of each other, for their world is at stake. For fans of thrilling epic fantasy that will keep you turning pages!
This book was brilliantly written, from different points of view , with great characters to get to grips with.
In the book we meet the intriguing, endearing character of Josse , immediately I was drawn to him , the boy who managed to escape. We also meet Leonnè, now she is a feisty, strong , independent girl who feel yourself wanting to survive in a world that seems to be against her. When the two get thrown together and must try to wield their powers, while trying to tolerate each other in order to save the world.
The way the book is written is fast paced, even though there are different points of view it is very easy to keep up with who is who, the action in the books keeps you hooked on it, I can't wait to read the next book!
I love fantasy and when it is dark fantasy that is all the better. Rise of the Immortals has all the good things you can expect from a dark fantasy, magic, curses, ghosts, immortals (obviously) and a lavishly developed world. Best of all it has a rather nice relationship built over time and genuinely between the main characters, Josse and Leonne. I will admit it did take me a little time for me to like Leonne but by the mid to end I was routing for both her and Josse.
The thing I enjoyed the most was this doesn’t follow a set ‘norm’ for fantasy and doesn’t do instant resolutions or relationships be they romantic or platonic between characters. Everything is paced in a natural flow and thus feels more natural. On top of this we have a wonderful and vivid world that is populated with so many interesting characters (both good and bad) and really gets you invested. This is also done in such a way that you don’t get long pieces of information or world dumping in one place. We learn about the places, people and magic bit by bit in a way that means you know what is going on, can tell it’s well thought out but you aren’t given a lot of information in one go and its not really referenced again (a bit of a pet peeve of mine).
I have to say I hadn’t read anything by Allen before this and I am lucky enough to be a tour for the second novel but I will certainly be reading the other works by this author. They not only write beautifully and create a believable and vivid world but they have memorable characters too. A must for fans of dark fantasy.
When Josse and Leonne, who met briefly when they were younger are thrown together by circumstance, they need to overcome their differences to defend both themselves and mortals from the dark magical forces which are rising in the kingdom. Both main characters are wonderfully written, Josse with his heroic stance, his overriding sense of right and wrong and his strong belief in the duties of a knight. Leonne is feisty, determined to be her own woman and refuses to bow down to any man, especially Josse. I was really drawn into their lives, finding I really cared about these people, their friends and the vivid world which the author has created. This book has everything I want in a fantasy novel. Magic, powerful amulets and monsters, both human and inhuman. It has acts of bravery and heroism plus for me, some great humour with the interaction between Josse and Leonne. Rise of the Immortals is a fabulous beginning to this series by Anna and I can’t wait for the second book so I can once again join the pair in their quest to save their world.
Josse was beaten by his mother's husband and desparately wanted to fight back but was too young and weak. His mother suffered too and on her death bed she told Josse about a secret box which held papers regarding his true identity. Now it was time to find his true family. The box unlocked a hoard of clues to a secret life but at such a young age his journey was harduous and long. This is a great read, well written and captures the imagination, easily pulling you in to keep turning those pages to follow the twists and turns of this captivating plot. From the start, you know there is going to be a life changing journey and in a mixture of historical fiction alongside dark fantasy, the author has a great skill to fully involve her readers from the off and leaves the ending at a critical point where you have to read more. Thoroughly enjoyed.
Compelling and powerful, Rise of the Immortals pulls you in from the very first page.
A story of good versus evil, ghosts, and magic come together to tell a powerful story full of vivid details and imagery. Though it is a fantasy novel, the author did a great job of introducing everything and everyone without long info dumps or bits of exposition. Important details were easily worked into the story, slowly building up the fantastic world her characters find themselves in.
I especially loved the magic system.
Josse and Leonne, the two main characters, are their own bit of fantastic, and I loved the way the author built the trust between them.
This book is a fantastic choice for fans of dark fantasy.
Loved this beautifully written fantasy with great characters. This book is fast-paced and keeps us hooked. There are different points of view. Loved Josse and Leonne, the main characters. I just loved reading it. Such an easy read. Overall, I loved this book and would recommend it for dark fantasy lovers.
Rise of the Immortals by Anna Allen. THE BATTLE FOR GRITHEIM BOOK ONE. In a world of rising magic, an unseen battle commences. The Gods of Gritheim release their instruments – for good and evil. Josse and Leonné must overcome their dislike of each other, for their world is at stake. I really did enjoy this book. It was different. Very well written. I did like Josse and Leonné and how they met. I did not like Jacque he was evil. I did like Danton and how he treated Achard and got rid of him. Good characters well some were. I liked Fitzsimmons and how he saved Leonné. I did like scene with Orella and Guiscard with the gloves. I'm looking forward to the next book. 5*.
The story starts strong as we meet young Josse. His life is currently one of torment at the hands of someone who should protect him… why does this man hate him so?
It quickly becomes clear there’s a hidden past and his protector isn’t the person we might have assumed.
Josse shows his true strength and weathers the storm around him.. determined that one day things will be different.. he must find out who he truly is..but it’s not going to be easy..or pain free.
The day for Josse to escape his torment comes sooner than he expects, and his life is changed forever as he is forced to flee…after a chance meeting with Leonné.
Fast forward some years and these two are set to cross paths again.
The blurb is really what sucked me in.. epic fantasy is something I just love, and Rise of the Immortals didn’t disappoint. It was the perfect setup for the series, introducing the characters and the backstory but at the same time leaving tit bits of info here and there as unknowns.. perfect for twists and turns as the series progresses.
Pace and flow are super important for me, and this offering was perfect. The story flows without any fluff.. the writer has the plot nailed perfectly and the direction of events is clear and easy to follow.
Character, wise I felt the development was natural and didn’t feel forced. There’s just the right amount of backstory to understand motivations and it really helps you get to know the characters well.
Focusing on the fantasy aspect I loved Guiscard D’Abernon and the Drackarts. I particularly liked how the author teased there’s more going on than we currently know, and this just made me super keen to keep reading and eager for more.
For fans of Epic Fantasy there’s plenty for you to get your teeth into. It’s super easy flow wise to follow and there’s just the right amount of teasing… there’s energy building and you just know there’s good things to come.
Rise of the Immortals lays strong foundations and I’m super excited to see where this goes. I’m keen to learn more about the world the characters live in and excited to see them develop.
Here is my review of Rise Of The Immortals by Anna Allen
I found this book so easy to get into and just loved reading it. It was an easy to read book and a fast read as I couldn’t turn the pages quick enough. I read the book in a day as I found I couldn’t put it down, I wanted to know what happened next. I found the main characters Josse and Leonne to be such interesting people, they couldn’t stand each other! They would rile each other up just by being near each other. The writing style was good and the plot was terrific as it keeps the reader hooked. The prose is great as everything is explained in such an easy to read and vibrant style. I can’t wait for book two to find out what happens next.

I discovered a love for fantasy books merely three years ago. Before this, I would only read a Terry Pratchett book in this genre. I have to say, since I began to read more fantasy, I now know I would have missed out on so many great books had I not pushed myself out of my comfort zone. Rise Of The Immortals is one such book.
An unknown author to me, Anna Allen has written a smashing book. I was immersed from the first sentence-never mind - first paragraph. The world building and characters are done well. So well that I was in love with the two main characters around the third chapter already and believed everything I read.
Josse, a young boy, is rescued from his abusive stepfather by Leon, another child who tries to rescue children and help them to safety, among other things. Josse is sent on his way to a safe place and given a new name. As the story unfolds, it seems appearances are not what they seem, and Leon is really Leonné a girl who is looking for her heritage as Josse is looking for his. Filled with dark magic, plenty of mysticism and action, I really invested in these two. I needed them to get what they needed and have a happy ever after. Every twist and turn had me holding my breath, hoping it would turn out OK.
The story is woven together with multiple threads, and the characters just add to the depth of this multi layered story, which has a reality that is vivid too. I reas this in one sitting and now, after that ending I need book two please! Thanks to ZooLoo's Book Tour for my copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.
An excellent, enticing story Intrigued from the very beginning, this reader was instantly drawn into the story. The tale is populated by sympathetic characters, by mysterious ones, and some very evil creatures who—isn’t it like in real life?—disguise themselves as nice people. Leonne, Fitzsimmons (has many names), Heroux, Jacque, Orella, Roland, etc. Every character has his/her personality; main or secondary, they all are properly fleshed out. The world building is excellent. However mystical, it painfully reminds me of what’s going on in the world now; on the pages, in the world of wizards and magical monsters, there is the same familiar, sheer human greed. The pacing is superb, accelerating around the midpoint of the narrative, and the suspense at the end of the story becomes almost unbearable, leaving the reader with questions which hopefully the author will answer in the next book. I don’t remember who recommended this book to me, but if I remember, I will thank that person. If you’d like to lose yourself in a fantasy beautifully written—and there is a romance at that!—Rise of the Immortals is for you. Highly recommended!

Mini review: •The start of this book was fast paced and quite interesting. As the book went on I found it hard to follow and found myself getting lost often. I found the characters a bit underdeveloped and hard to connect with throughout the story. If you enjoy epic fantasy I do recommend reading this, overall it was great just not for me.
Rise of the Immortals: The Battle For Gritheim: Book One by Anna Allen is a fast-paced epic story of magic, witchcraft and wraiths. At most points, the hectic writing left me feeling like I was watching an action film rather than reading and settling down for an immersive adventure. This is not a criticism in that this is a common style nowadays. Many writers focus on moving the plot along and this is a unique tale does exactly that. It moves quickly. It has a good storyline and path, as well as some decent worldbuilding impressions, and an evolving magic system. But as a reader of epic fantasy who enjoys more detail, I kept waiting for the tale to slow down and focus on the deeper, more meaningful thoughts and actions of the main characters. Although the characters did not grab me, I enjoyed the gung-ho action and drive throughout. It’s a good start to a series. I hope in the next book I will discover more emotion and detail that draws out the human elements of the characters. Four stars.
From a little boy who discovers his life is not as he knows it, turns upside down when a mysterious girl saves his life and encourages him to leave. He manages to create a new life for himself rising through the ranks and becomes one of the youngest leaders. Without giving away spoilers, I enjoyed the journey with Josse and Leonné. How their lives keep entwining. His protective streak, and Leonné’s stubbornness. Can these two work together and survive what life has installed for them? Will the secrets which surround them be discovered before it is too late? With strange powers building, will they be able to handle control them and use for good? A page turning adventure and cannot wait to read the next book to continue the mystery and intrigue and discover how these two determined young people will survive and unearth the truth. Great characters, world building and storyline. Recommended.
This book came recommended to me and while fantasy books are not typically my first go-to-choice, I do enjoy any story that takes me into another time and place, especially when its by an author in which I’ve already read—and enjoyed—another book of theirs. I had first read the second book in this series, which if you ask me at that time, it could stand on its own merit. This book here, Rise of the Mortals, took me back to discover so much more.
Captivating from page one onward. In the book I had read first, I felt for Leonne. In this book, I enjoyed the interweaving relationship between her and Josse and his rise to leadership. Even when they didn’t know it, Leonne and Josse were on the same page in their goals. This wasn’t a stereotypically dark story as fantasies often are. Rather, a historical layer gave credence to this well-developing storyline, rich with layers, all through to the last page.
Yes, I recommend this to any reader who needs a great story to fall into.
The prologue sets the tone for the story, which includes a prophesy regarding two children born the same day. It will fall to them to try to save Gritheim from certain doom. A young lad, Josse, has had a brutal childhood. His stepfather is prone to drunken rampages and Josse fears for his life. Not far from his inn, a young girl faces problems as well. The two are destined to cross paths repeatedly, and though they neither trust nor like each other they need to work together to solve the mysteries surrounding them. They discover sentient artifacts, family heirlooms, and unique animal companions along the way. Some of the circumstances seemed a bit too convenient, but the story moves along at a decent pace, keeping the reader engaged. The overall story gives a distinct dark fairytale vibe and makes for a good tale.
The Battle For Gritheim is the first book in this exciting new series.
I was instantly pulled into this storyline right from the start, which is unusual for me with a new fantasy. The world building was intriguing and woven well into the whole storyline so as not to become too overwhelming.
I loved our main characters who from the start actually hated each other. It soon becomes apparent though, that they must work together to hone their skills and learn their magic in order to save humanity. Although pretty scary!....I thought the Drackarts were great as a force of evil.
This was a pretty short/quick read for the fantasy genre and I loved this because I often feel intimidated by the super chunky novels in this genre. This was a nice easy introduction to this world and I'm excited to see what will follow into book 2
This isn't my usual genre, and is definitely not a book I'd pick up. This would have meant I missed out on a wonderful read which would have been a great shame. Josse is abused by a man he believes to be his father, but when he's eventually left on his own in the world he discovers his heritage. He escapes and rebuilds his life, and it's grippingly told. Despite his slight arrogance, you want Josse to succeed. Despite being fantasy, at the base of all books are the characters and I got behind each one and continued to turn the pages quicker than I expected to find out what happened. This is book 1 in a series and the ending is left at a point where you will be dying to pick up book 2.
Ghosts, magic, and the classic battle between good and evil, Rise of the Immortals was written extremely well with plot drops throughout the story that were timed perfectly without any info dump. I enjoyed the building relationship between Josse and Leonné because it wasn't thrown together too quickly and had a lot of character depth and relationship building. Having read a large number of fantasy books I found Rise of the Immortals a refreshing take on the genre that did not succumb to the dreaded cookie cutter stories I've read in the past. Overall a really good story.
What I liked most about this book is it’s different. The hero and the heroine don’t meet and immediately fall in love. The interactions are enjoyable to read and the way they slowly change each other is very well written. The reader finds out about their origins and more about what is really going on slowly, as the characters discover things, instead of it being an info dump. There’s betrayals, discoveries and death – everything a good book needs. This book will make you want to read the next one to find out where the characters go next and who they can really trust.
Immortals is a compelling fantasy story. While I didn't connect with Josse right away, his interactions and relationship with Leone eventually got me onboard with him. I loved Leone from her introduction. Definitely my favorite character in the book. Their journey together grounded the book in a strong relationship that kept me turning the pages. The author does an excellent job of teaching you about this fascinating world without it ever feeling like exposition. And I really enjoyed the way magic worked in this universe. A strong introduction to a series.
Rise Of The Immortals is book one in this series and I can't wait to dive into book 2. It's a dark and twisted fantasy about good vs. evil with plenty of twists and turns that will keep you turning the pages.
Josse and Leonne are thrown together by a prophesy and together they fight for the kingdom of mortals. All the while, fighting for their lives! With the battle for power and control on the rise, will these two survive? Or will the Gods of Gritheim win in the end?
All in all, an epic fantasy with a twist of historical romance.
"I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author and Zooloo's Book Tours in exchange for a read and review. All opinions are my own." ...
The beginning of the book was actually quite interesting. The pacing was mixed, though; it would pick up the pace, slow down a bit, then pick up again.
The execution felt a bit weak, and I found the characters to be underdeveloped. I liked Fitzsimmons initially, but eventually I struggled to connect with any of them. I think readers already familiar with epic fantasy might enjoy it more.
Anna Allen also writes historical romantic suspense under a different name. 'Rise of the Immortals' channels the same world, a place where men's lives are brutal and short. Women arguably suffer more: this is a misogynistic society, where a girl is ruined if she steps out of line. In this story, Anna Allen adds magic and a fight to save humanity from a cruel immortal race. Two young magicians find themselves forced to work together, facing death or worse. It's a fast-paced tale with tons of exciting twists, and a smooth lead-in to the next book in the series.
The first page had me invested and from then on I wanted to know more about Josse and what his true heritage was, and then the enigmatic Leonne whose background was just as deep and mysterious, and all the while the reader doesn’t really know who they can trust. I loved the way the story developed and how the two protagonists grew with each new discovery and the connection that binds them. This is an extremely well written story with plots and sub plots and all kinds of devilish and interesting characters adding fuel to an already stoked fire.
“Rise of the Immortals” Book 1 is an exciting, page, turning, fantasy, thriller, that has a little bit of everything, romance, magic, mystery and more. Fantasy fiction is not my normal choice for reading, however, this story through me into the action from the very first page. I really got hooked on the adventure, and intrigue of these characters. Looking forward to book 2 of the series!
Well written and it draws you in. Get comfy and get ready to have a hard time putting this one down. The characters cross paths as children then again when older. There is a great deal of darkness ready to deal death blows and deceit has the upper hand. Great read but be warned this is a cliff hanger.
Had a hard time putting the book down. Great use of descriptive language to create the images of the novel in my mind. I really enjoyed the journey this novel took me on and look forward to reading another by this author!
A very enjoyable read with an interesting plot. I loved how the two MC' plots weaved and interacted with each other. The detail with their backgrounds and the unknown families is very intriguing. A great start to a series and I can't wait to read onwards.
A copy of this book was supplied through Zooloo's Book Tours in exchange for an honest review.
That cover. Wow. I love the dark shades of red, contrasting with the black and the flames. The symmetry works really well.
This is book 1 in The Battle for Gritheim series and starts to introduce the big bad that's rising up to take control in the fantasy land of Gritheim. The prologue introduces the prophesy foretelling of a boy and girl that will become redeemers if they succeed in destroying evil.
I did switch over to the Kindle Unlimited version of this and the editing could be tightened. The narrative voice often headhopped between characters, which jarred me and broke the flow, and shares information after the fact, rather than showing us.
The concept of vampires (whires) in this world seems to come quite suddenly as these aren't your typical blood-sucking creatures. I'm intrigued to see where book 2 takes us, with the pair's developing powers and the increasing pressure applied by the darker forces.
