Entertaining…
Monster Mansion by Melody Rose is an entertaining “ride.” I really liked Logan’s character. She was just the right amount of “knowledge of the supernatural” for a human. The fact that she’s grown up with a grandmother that believed in witchcraft and ancient lore helped to give her character credibility as a human who wouldn’t be automatically afraid of a “haunted” mansion.
Nox, Ruse and Thorn were vastly different monsters with very different characters. I liked Nox’s no nonsense demeanor and thought he had a good blend of “bad” and “good” traits. Thorn was, for lack of another word, adorable, lol. For a horrifying creature he’s a “gentle soul” that just yearns for love and true acceptance and a “pack,” once more. It took me longer to warm up to Ruse. I think that’s because he’s so anti-Logan for so much of the book, it’s a little unbelievable that he’d fall in love with her and shed his a$$hole ways because they had rough monster sex. Again, wasn’t the monster sex that was the turn off, lol, it was the fact that he did a complete 180 after they did the deed. And sadly this doesn’t occur until you’re well into the book, so all you really get to know is a-hole Ruse, not “I’m in love with Logan,” Ruse.
Mr. Silver could’ve used more “fleshing out” as a character. He was the typical evil corporate mogul who wants to rule the world because he has a God complex etc. etc. etc. since you don’t read that much about him, and all the “action” on his part comes at the very end, I just thought he was kinda “blah” as a “bad guy.” Heck, the weasel groundkeeper came off more evil and two-faced than Mr. Silver at times.
The end was thoroughly rushed! The pace of the book had been going so well, and then suddenly it’s like a rocket takes off and we’re speeding toward “the end.” Everything gets tied up neatly in a four page epilogue, and it’s quite dissatisfying. The end itself was also dissatisfying. So to have a lame epilogue kind of stinks. The book was funny, had some nice character development and an interesting overall plot, it deserved a totally satisfying ending ( especially since it’s just one book).
Overall, a fun, entertaining monster RH that ties up “neatly,” and is a quick read.
