Out of the frying pan, into the fire👨‍🚒 🔥

Former US Marshal Andrew Walker is about to become a father. That means (per his wife) it’s time to stop chasing criminals and find a more tame line of work. Something along the lines of say, a desk job. How about arson investigator?

But Walker must first come face-to-face with a very devious thief he put away years ago. Who knows…perhaps this new job has a lot more excitement than he anticipated! Just don’t tell his wife!🤫

This was an entertaining, fast read. Lee Goldberg is a Hollywood writer and his expertise showed here. I could imagine this as a pilot to a new series on tv!

There is a book two in the works and I’m ready for to it!

Thank you to Goodreads Giveaways

Though I enjoyed this piece of fiction….Was difficult to read a book all about wildfires right now. Thoughts and prayers to everyone in Lahaina!.💔😢

I haven't read a Lee Goldberg novel in a while. I'm glad "Malibu Burning" ended up being the final choice for my buddy read with Jennifer.

Goldberg knows how to pull you right in with intriguing characters and witty dialogue with Sharpe and Walker. One is a seasoned LA detective and another is a former US Marshal whose wife wants him to switch careers. They're teamed as arson investigators.

This book feels different and refreshing maybe because I haven't read any fiction about wildfires before. Also, convict firefighter, firefighting detail, and arson investigation are all new.

My thoughts were everywhere rooting for the two Investigators and also the antihero ex-conman, back at doing what he does best, conning. This was a nonstop entertaining action adventure!

Malibu Burning is the start of a new police procedural series involving two arson investigators. It’s a great premise and well researched.
Andrew Walker has just made the switch from US Marshall to arson investigator with the LA County Sheriff’s Department. He’s being trained by a senior investigator, Walter Sharpe. Meanwhile, Danny Cole is an ex-con who spent his prison time on the prisoner volunteer firefighter squad. He’s out now and, jaded by his time on that squad, is planning a big heist.
All three characters were well fleshed out. Although as I comment below, I struggled with Danny, despite his supposed sense of ethics.
The story moves at a brisk pace but takes the time to set up the premise and give the reader an insight into both fire fighting and arson investigation. As the story really gets underway, it requires a big suspension of belief. Also, Goldberg has taken a real gamble here. Most fictional heists are victimless crimes; think the Ocean series. Here, there are thousands of innocent victims at risk not to mention the thousands of acres of woodlands lost. I struggled with the concept. These weren’t criminals I liked, despite the rationales provided for some of them.
The story is written with two different timelines, which eventually merge in the present. Goldberg is also a screenwriter and that same sense of drama definitely comes across in his books. I could see this as a mini-series.
This is fun entertainment and definitely kept me on the edge of my seat wondering how it would work out. I will certainly check out the next in the series.
My thanks to Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for an advance copy of this book.

3.5 rounded up

Here we follow Danny Cole, a master thief with a big heart whose latest heist is revenge based and involves fire. Hot on their heels (sorry!) are arson investigators Walter Sharpe and his new partner Andrew Walker.

Parts of this are really good, I especially like the Danny storyline as that’s lively and for a villain he’s very likeable. The characterisation is good as is the dialogue and there’s humour albeit the ripe Brie variety. The ending is good, it’s a tad of a credulity stretch but I like it and that’s what counts. Wrongs are put right - yay!!

However, some of the fire tech talk between the investigators is mind numbing and I skim that.

Overall, a decent read.

The following extracts from my Listening Activity can serve as my 'review', because I have very little else to say about this disappointing audiobook.

This is another 'whim' purchase😉, made after I read some positive reviews for "Book #2, Ashes Never Lie". My series-order "idée fixe" means I have to listen to Book #1 first!

The first 25% has shaped up well and I am enjoying this one, so far.

50% in and I think I should have more interest in the story than I do, but I am learning some stuff about the art of arson, so there is that... :)

I really pushed to reach 62%, but that's it! I am sick of hearing the how, when and why of 'voracious wildfires' in Southern California, and I simply do not like the implausible dual time-lines of this novel. Now, will I listen to "#2 Ashes Never Lie"? Probably not.

BIG thanks to both Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for the opportunity to read and review an early copy of Malibu Burning!!

Expected publication: June 20th 2023

As the most devastating firestorms in Los Angeles’ history scorch the hills of Malibu, relentless arson investigator Walter Sharpe and his wild card of a new partner, Andrew Walker, a former US marshal, suspect that someone set the massive blazes intentionally, a terrifying means to an unknown end.

What a rip-roaring ride Malibu Burning was! It felt so good to lose myself in a book that made me laugh out loud. (I think I've read too many sad books, lately.) The pace was fast, and I never got bored. Walter Sharpe and Andrew Walker were hilarious together! Not only that, the depiction of the Santa Ana winds was spot on! Also, I loved the con man with a heart of gold. Wonderful book!

I have a request, Mr. Goldberg. Can you pretty please bring Sharpe and Walker back in another book?

Arson investigator Walter Sharpe and his new partner, Andrew Walker, a former US marshal, suspect that someone set the massive blazes intentionally.

This book bounces around in time from before, during and after the big fire in the hills outside Malibu. So topical with all the out-of-control wildfires in California and the fact that it's near time for the Santa Ana winds this year. The characters are well drawn and the story is well written. I liked the back-and-forth between Sharpe and Walker and Danny Cole was a likeable con man who had volunteered for the convict firefighting program when he was in prison. I pictured Andrew Walker as a modern-day McCloud (Dennis Weaver). A good starting point for this new series.

I have Ashes Never Lie, Book 2 in this series, waiting in the wings and I'm really looking forward to reading it.

I borrowed this from Amazon with my Kindle Unlimited membership. All opinions expressed are my own.

Lee Goldberg has written yet another page-turner, this one marking the start of a new series. Walter Sharpe and Andrew Walker are arson investigators in the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. Walker used to be a US Marshal but now, due to work-related injuries and a baby on the way, he is determined to pursue what he feels will be a safer line of police work. Sharpe is an experienced arson investigator.

As with his Eve Ronin series, Goldberg sets this story in the Los Angeles area, specifically the northern sections often referred to as “the valley”, including the titular Malibu. Wildfires are an annual feature of the dry landscape, especially when the Santa Ana winds start blowing. I’ve visited the general area many times as part of a family visit, and his descriptions are great.

The book bounces around a bit in time, to several years before the main action, to show the background of one of the main characters, Danny Cole, a “white collar” criminal who Walker had pursued. Cole spent several years in prison, but with a twist. He volunteered for the convict firefighting program, as he felt that would be safer than a traditional prison, despite the inherent danger in fighting wildfires - and better food too. I found this aspect fascinating, as I had no idea there was such a program. Cole is a very interesting character - a thief with a sense of ethics.

The story gets complicated, but Goldberg keeps things going. I loved the interaction between Sharpe and Walker and look forward to reading the second book in this series.

I alternated between the audio and the ebook for this title, which was really convenient!

Malibu Burning is a masterfully crafted caper story. It runs the very difficult tightrope of blending the danger and destruction of devastating wildfires with the lighter banter passed between the highly engaging cast of characters. The result is a super swift crime story boasting revenge attacks and cartel killers set to the backdrop of some of the most vicious fires imaginable.

In an unusual scenario, the book features a two-pronged protagonist attack, each representing opposite sides of the law. Danny Cole is brilliant when it comes to planning and carrying out grand-scale heists. His only weakness is a sense of honour when it comes down to coming to the aid of people in trouble.

Walter Sharpe is an absolute genius when it comes to arson cases. He reads the smallest of clues with precision and can easily differentiate the difference between accidental ignition and a deliberately lit fire. He’s well suited to his job with the California Sheriff’s Department’s arson unit.

Sharpe’s new partner is Andrew Walker, a former US Marshall who, with a pregnant wife who’s scared their unborn son will never meet his dad, has taken a step back to a more sedate lifestyle as an arson investigator. He’s caught Danny Cole once before and, although he’s a complete arson investigation rookie, he knows his way around a criminal setup backwards.

After serving a good chunk of prison time, where he had himself placed in the state’s volunteer convict firefighting program, Danny comes out with a humdinger of a major heist plan. As well as ensuring a life-changing score, his plan will also exact revenge on a group of loathsome billionaires. These white-collar charlatans operate barely within the law but have made their fortunes at the expense of others. And one in particular was responsible for the death of a friend of Danny’s.

So, on the one hand we have the prospect of an amazing criminal plan that could yield the score of the century and on the other, a couple of criminalists who are outstanding at what they do. It’s the ideal scenario for totally engaging entertainment and Lee Goldberg doesn’t shy away from injecting as many offbeat elements and unexpected twists just to keep everyone on their toes.

Sharpe and Walker gradually evolve from the odd couple partners into a well functioning team who learn to respect each other’s strengths. There’s little doubt that even though they’re a pariah pairing within the policing community, they’re also the only ones who have any hope of figuring out how the fires have been started and who may be responsible. Along the way we get the most thorough education in arson investigation without it ever really feeling like we’re being schooled.

With sharp dialogue, a cast of varied and entertaining characters and a superbly wrought plot, Malibu Burning simply roars along like an out of control locomotive. It all reaches its resounding conclusion barely in control, filled with suspense and excitement. It's great fun in the way Donald Westlake used to make it fun, perfect for devotees of the best crime capers.

Danny Cole, conman extraordinaire, sets out to execute the mother-of-all heists. But this time, his motivation isn’t strictly monetary. He has a score to settle, one long overdue.

Enlisting several unsavory characters and a stolen, locked-and-loaded, Icarus drone, Cole puts his plan into motion and ignites an inferno within the California landscape housing billionaire homes, the perfect cover for a bunch of ex-cons with sticky fingers.

Meanwhile, a John-Wayne-wannabe, U. S. Marshal Andrew Walker, heeds his uncanny spidey sense, convinced the air reeks of something other than acrid smoke and failed powerlines. And while Walker may be an expert in reading criminal behavior, his new partner, Walter Sharpe, is a connoisseur in all things combustible. Together they enter the terrifying firestorm with plans to catch their man…if the thugs sent by a cartel kingpin don’t get to him first.

My thanks to Mr. Goldberg, Thomas & Mercer, and NetGalley for the ARC.

When con man Dan Cole finally runs out of luck and is facing a stretch in prison, he instructs his lawyer to find a way of getting him sent to a specific prison, one from which he can volunteer to be part of the prisoner firefighting service. The service makes up something like a third of the total firefighting force in the state of California and offers an alternative way of serving time to those selected. Cole just doesn’t fancy spending time in an environment where the long arms of the cartel he’s just ripped off can reach in and shiv him whilst he’s showering.

Meanwhile, Andrew Walker has just switched from being a US Marshall to join the LA County Sheriff’s Department. There, he will be managed and mentored by Walter Sharpe, an experienced and somewhat maverick old hand. Their brief is to investigate fire scenes when arson is suspected. The pair make up a Stadler and Waldorf combination and their conversations are both deadly serious and also seriously funny. I really enjoyed Goldberg’s introduction of this new law enforcement pairing.

Cole, Walker, and Sharpe are set to cross paths when the former is finally released from incarceration, complete with a new and daring plan to rob millionaire houses situated in the hills inland from monied Malibu. An area known to be prone to vicious wildfires. It’s all great fun as the threesome set about their respective tasks and the Santa Ana winds begin to whip up a series of huge fires, setting the scene for a big showdown.

I’ve only recently discovered Goldberg’s novels, which is surprising in itself, given the author’s prodigious output. I’m already a big fan of his Eve Ronin series and although this tale is a little over the top in terms of both its action and also its accompanying dialogue, I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed it. I was horizontal on a Mediterranean beach throughout my short time with this story and perhaps this somewhat enhanced my mood, but I do know that I’ll definitely be dialling in for the next episode in this new series.

My thanks to Thomas & Mercer for providing a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Lee Goldberg has written more than 40 novels. I have read only about half a dozen, but really like his Eve Ronin series which is why I jumped at the chance to read an ARC of what is to become a new series featuring arson investigators Walker and Sharpe. Rather than trying to summarize the story, suffice it to say that it involves a clever con artist who is too good hearted for his own good, raging fires caused by arson, retribution, a bit of Robin Hood mentality, and the afore mentioned two investigators. Walker, a former US Marshall, is newly teamed with Sharpe, whose nickname is Shar-pei, one of the reasons being his uncanny resemblance to that breed of dog. Both Walker and Sharpe are unique characters, a bit unconventional, but full of wit and intelligence.

Despite the plot being a bit over the top, it is a good story. Some of the dialog in the beginning is a bit cheesy, but it is a fun read, with a measure of humor and vivid descriptions. I would liken it to a popcorn movie….a fast moving nailbiter to read purely for entertainment….and you just may learn something about fires and firefighting. Get in on this series from the beginning!

Thanks to #netgalley and #thomas&Mercer for the ARC.

Always one to enjoy a unique perspective to crime thrillers, I eagerly read this latest book by Lee Goldberg. Set in the middle of California, the story seeks to explore the dangerous world of fire and those who fight to keep them in check. After a career criminal sets a plot to destroy vast areas with the flick of a match, an odd pairing of arson investigator and former US Marshal emerge as the duo who will have to track down all the clues. Raging at times and full of heated action, Goldberg does well to portray the action here in another of his great stories.

Every October, Southern California turns from beautiful scenery into a raging and hellish zone of wildfires. Started for many reasons, including sparks floating on the wind, it can create chaos and devastate in ways no one could imagine. While there are crews on the ready, sometimes no one can prepare for the mayhem that can occur when flame arrives.

Danny Cole has a love of those flames. A criminal through and through, he uses the flames to convince him of his own power and to help him commit a crime like no other. He will have to block all that ends to his guilt through raging fires and devastation.

On the other side of the coin are those who investigate fires and try to determine their purpose and rationale. Walter Sharpe is an arson investigator who has dedicated his life to understanding fire and those who would use it as their weapon of choice. When he is paired with new recruit, Andrew Walker, the math is far from ideal. Walker is a former US Marshal, bringing his knowledge of the criminal mind to the team, but fire eludes him. This will force Sharpe to teach him the ins and outs of the trade, while also hoping that he can trust this man who appears to have waltzed in from the outside.

Examining a serous fire in the region, Sharpe and Walker think that it may have been started intentionally, but they cannot fully understand what’s happened or the motive behind it. The will have to work their magic and push through the smoke to get answers. Cole has other ideas, as he has covered his track up to this point and wants nothing more than to watch things burn. It will take determination and standing up to fiery blazes to bring a criminal down. Sharpe and Walker have the wherewithal, but do they hold the clue to fingering Cole and capturing him before more can be accomplished. A great piece by Lee Goldberg that captures all the elements of a great thriller.

I have always enjoyed Goldberg’s approach to crime writing and the elements he uses to get his point across. There is so much going on that the reader can only hope to follow along and stay up to speed. The story moves quickly, like a burning inferno, forcing the reader to keep pace through the short and intense chapters, as well as the strong narrative that never seems to abate. Goldberg make this a ride like no other that the reader must ensure they are ready for all that comes out in the story.

Character development works well in this piece, keeping the reader in the middle of things. With a new series comes a great deal of action and new faces to understand. Sharpe and Walker both have their own backstories here, both emerge as the narrative builds. The reader can get a glimpse at them, but will have to wait for another piece to get fully immersed. I am eager to see where things are headed with characters and how they will help flavour the larger story arcs of the series.

There is much to the said about the story and how things push forward. Goldberg weaves his story through a number of twists and turns, keeping the reader on their toes as things progress. The element of surprise works well here, as one surely understands that fire is less than predictable. I can only hope the action and suspense continue as things progress through this series. For a debut, things were on point and left me wanting more, in a good way. I will keep my eyes open for another in the series, if only to calm the raging interest that has been building within me.

Kudos, Mr. Goldberg, for another great piece that showcases your abilities.

Completely unbelievable but one heck of a ride! This was told in exquisite detail, the writing was top notch. This was incredibly fast paced and I was riveted from the beginning. The characters were unique and mixed very well together. While not plausible it was very, very entertaining. If you are looking for an adrenaline ride- this is it!

“I want to get some sense of the firebug we’re chasing,” Walker said. “Let’s talk motive. For an urban fire, it’s got to be revenge, money or hiding another crime.”

Or all three. In one of the most entertaining books I have read in years, a modern-day Robin Hood - conman Danny Cole - plans the biggest (and final) heist of his career: to set and manage a wildfire, funnelled by canyons and fanned by Sant’ Ana winds – creating a narrow window in which to strip the homes of a trio of Malibu billionaires who gained their wealth by systematically fleecing the unwary - forced by law enforcement to evacuate or be arrested ahead of the advancing inferno.

Up against him: veteran arson investigator Walter Sharpe, with his new assistant, the same former US Marshall Andrew Walker who arrested Cole eight years earlier in a heist to take down a drug lord in a false money-laundering scam. At the time Cole’s lawyer put up a plea-bargaining case for Cole to serve his sentence at a low-security prison where the inmates fight fires / build containment lines for the local community.

Set along two timelines: for Cole and his associates – a countdown from eight years ago, reducing to months / weeks / days of the plan. For Sharpe and Walker thrown together, a matter of days. Not only are they up against Cole but politics, money, arguments over jurisdiction and entrenched attitudes hamstring the pair in their investigation - which could cripple their careers. Their only certainty: Cole would have an escape plan.

“Even if we could convince (Sheriff) Lansing that a heist is going down, he isn’t going to drop deputies into the path of a rampaging wildfire to stop it.”
“Even if one of the rich homeowners calls him and exerts some pressure? The sheriff is a politician who’d like to be mayor. Maybe even governor someday. That takes money.”

Not a big reader, but this was one I could not put down.

There are a handful of authors whose books I always look forward to reading, and Mr. Goldberg is one of them. And with this book, he once again doesn't disappoint; it's a real barn-burner. Besides that, I absolutely loved the main characters, the super-skillful arson investigator Walter Sharpe and his new partner, Andrew Walker - so much so that I'm hoping we'll see them again (and again) in a series.

For this nonstop adventure, they're hot on the trail of ex-con Danny Cole, a clever thief who, during his prison time, volunteered for the prison's firefighter squad. The work is challenging and dangerous, but to Danny, it beat being stuck in a prison cell and trying to avoid payback from people he'd scammed. But living out in the wilderness sparked not only his expertise with wildfires, but also his desire for another big payoff - along with getting revenge on behalf of a friend who was terribly wronged. Almost as soon as he walked out the prison door as a free man, he began putting together an air-tight plan and assembling his team of experts.

Chapters shift back and forth between Danny's efforts to get rich and what's going on in the lives of the arson team's effort; it's no surprise when everything and everyone come together amid an out-of-control wildfire that threatens multi-million dollar California mansions. Along the way Andrew - himself a seasoned detective - soaked up Walter's extensive knowledge of wildfires (as do readers, BTW). Good thing, because it'll take all that, and more, if they want Danny's grand plan to go down in flames.

Suffice it to say there's never a dull moment from the first page to the rather unexpected ending, whether it be chuckles, gasps or nail-biting angst over which character might not make it to the next chapter. That's another way to say this is another sizzler, and I thank the publisher, via NetGalley, for the opportunity to read and review a pre-release copy. Good job!

When I first saw this book I thought it was a new Eve Ronin but I was wrong it is a new Sharpe and Walker. This is the first book in a brand new series by Lee Goldberg and boy is it good. Now I eagerly await the second one in this series. The story and the characters in this suspensefilled new adventure are well created as usual and I get the feeling that Goldberg has some feel for the location, it's almost as if he lives there?(HaHa) This is actually the second book in a short time that concerns wildfires but this one is really brutal. There is a great timeline that narrows as one reads the story and in the end the two timelines melts into the present. It's a fastpaced book that is very easy to enjoy thanks to the wonderful writing of Goldberg, I can see why he also writes for the screen. I think I have to look into some of his other works because so far everything I have read by him is great. Thanks to Thomas & Mercer, Amazon publishing and Netgalley for providing me with this great story.

That was exciting with an intricate plot. I enjoyed the characters although I think we lost a few along the way. I am not sure if I like the crooks or the cops better. Hmm…lots of action, lots of intrigue, a Sherlock-like arson investigator, and a new sidekick with a cowboy hat and a side of snark make this an entertaining fast paced read. This was a buddy read with Kay and I am anxious to see what she thinks.

Malibu Burning is a marvelous heist thriller with enough twists to make the most jaded reader smile. It is well-written, well-researched--both the wildfire and arson investigation stuff--and it is populated with likable, exotic, and even a few oddball, characters. Malibu Burning may be Lee Goldberg's best book yet, which is really saying something because he has written some excellent novels.

Lee Goldberg is a prolific writer whose credits include writing for television ("Diagnosis Murder,""Hunter," "Spenser: For Hire," and "Monk"). Reading this book I could see it playing out on the small screen.

Danny Cole is a master con man. A thief with a conscience. A modern day Robin Hood. He can pull off the perfect heist and be making his getaway and wind up getting caught because he stopped to save an innocent bystander.

Andrew Walker is a former US Marshal who is married and there is a baby on the way. His wife wanted him to find a safer line of work so he has joined the LA County Sheriff’s Department as an arson investigator and is partnered with senior investigator Walter (Shar-pei) Sharpe. Sharpe is a man of reason. He can figure out the cause of a fire while doing a load of laundry. Walker is a man of action. Even if he is now an arson investigator. Together they make an interesting pair.

Devastating wildfires are a fact of life in Southern California and Danny Cole has a plan to take advantage of them to avenge a friend and rob the ubber rich. His plan involves using the wildfires. Maybe starting a couple. Little does he know though that his old nemesis, Walker, and master arson investigator, Sharpe, are right on his heels.

Wildfires are unpredictable and Cole, Walker and Sharpe find themselves in a situation where no one may get out alive no matter how good a plan Danny Cole has. If the fires aren't enough there are some cartels who are after Danny too.

This is listed as the first book in a series and it looks like there is a second one, Ashes Never Lie, in the works. I look forward to reading it when it is published.

Lee Goldberg has in a very short time become one of a select few authors that consistently turn out quality books in a series that I devour and then have to wait for the installment. Malibu Burning introduces arson investigator Walter Sharpe and his new partner Andrew Walker as they investigate a series of fires across the hills of Southern California. Along the way we also follow Master Con Man Danny Cole as he plans his next big score. As the fires rage in this thriller, all the great characters and their stories converge in an incredibly tense and satisfying way. I can't wait to spend more time with Sharpe & Walker and eagerly anticipate meeting up with them again soon.

Prolific author Lee Goldberg maintains his standard excellent writing in his latest legal thriller, “Malibu Rising” — a terrific action-packed tale of two partners who definitely need a sequel or two.

Cowboy-hatted US Marshal Andrew Walker has recently changed careers to become a Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department arson investigator, joining veteran Detective Walter Sharpe. Sharpe’s first lesson to Walker: “Arson is done for a purpose and it’s usually for revenge, money, or hiding another crime.”

Two villains are introduced: the unrelentingly harsh Santa Ana winds due to arrive soon and a criminal from the past. Eight years ago Walker pursued and captured master thief Danny Cole, who finagled his way onto one of CalFire’s inmate firefighting gangs. The story is original and clever as Walker finds himself pursuing Cole again while Sharpe uses his incredible skill set to determine the causes of fires, but this time the pursuit is through flames and near death experiences. Kudos to Mr. Goldberg’s research about firefighting in California! This really was an unputdownable book — even as it was pouring rain while I read this, the author created an immersive world where I could imagine bushes bursting into flames before my eyes (and looking up for drones and ping-pong balls). 5 stars! I hope to see Walker and Sharpe back in a series of their own.

Thank you to Thomas and Mercer and NetGalley for an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review! This will also be a Kindle Unlimited release.

Literary Pet Peeve Checklist:
Green Eyes (only 2% of the real world, yet it seems like 90% of all fictional females): YES Mr. Goldberg said he will never make this mistake because he’s colorblind (his input to my last review of his book “Movieland”!), but, well, well, well, there’s Drysdale (ok, they’re contacts), pregnant Carly, and the crazy lady whose green eyes are fogged with cataracts… THREE green eyed characters!
Horticultural Faux Pas (plants out of season or growing zones, like daffodils in autumn or bougainvillea in Alaska): NO As I learned from his past books, Lee Goldberg really knows the fauna and flora in the Malibu region.

I couldn't believe that one of my favorite authors was listed on the Kindle First Reads this month. This one is the start of a new series about California fire inspectors, Sharpe and his new partner, Walker. Inmate firefighters played a big role in this novel--when they got out of prison, they planned a spectacular heist and added some revenge to this wild mix of fires, elaborate planning, and an angry Mexican cartel.

This series is getting better and better with each new book. I was captivated by the previous one and was so excited to see there’s a new book coming out soon.

Malibu Burning is a story full of interesting characters, a fast-paced action and a very character driven plot.

A former police officer is the investigator of arson cases that have been happening lately and many of these cases haven’t been solved until now. There are so many unlikable characters in here. From the movie producer, a vengeful wife, the Mexican mafia and the rich oligarchs. They all have a say and their place, and I think they portrait a great big picture after reading the book and going back thinking at all the scenes from the book.

I liked the interactions and how the dialogue just flows between the main characters.

I actually liked the con guy, Danny Cole. He is smart and while his actions speak for himself; I found him an intriguing character altogether.

The fires and the burning scenes and the firefighters’ rescue teams and attempts to tame those fires are so vividly described. You can easily see that the author is a screenplay writer and I hope these books will make their debut on the big screen because they really deserve it.

A thrilling must read story.

Very grateful to the publisher for my review copy

A “Robin Hood” type of conman with a heart of gold. A former U.S. marshal working as an arson investigator while he waits for the birth of his first child. A widow seeking revenge. A jaded detective who has seen too many unsolved cases. Throw in a narcissistic producer, a Russian oligarch, members of a Mexican drug cartel and you have some of the characters that make Malibu Burning a simply sensational read!

Sentenced to prison after a con job goes bad, Danny Cole becomes a volunteer firefighter with other inmates. He’s disturbed by a cruel event but inspired by the empty, evacuated California mansions and the wealth left behind. After he serves his sentence, he gathers his team of criminals to plot a spectacular crime. Meanwhile, arson investigators Walter Sharpe and Andrew Walker are investigating a series of wildfires they believe were deliberately set. Of course, they two separate plots will collide in the middle of one of the worst fires the area has ever seen.

The writing in Malibu Burning is so realistic and visual that you feel the heat of the flames. You see the firefighters creating fire breaks, hear the vibration of the helicopters and try to catch your breath during the breakneck action. Here’s the reason why: Lee Goldberg, an Edgar and Shamus Award winner and TV show writer/producer. The next step for Malibu Burning should be a screenplay. The team of Sharpe and Walker should be a series. And Danny Cole should keep on planning the long cons. Thank you, Lee Goldberg. 5 stars.

Thank you to NetGalley, Thomas & Mercer and Lee Goldberg for this ARC.

I was so excited to get my hands on an ARC of this book through NetGalley. Goldberg has become one of my favorite authors, and I’d been biding my time waiting for a new release by re-reading his other books.

This “standalone” (really hoping it’ll become a series) introduces a new cast of characters (some of whom feel like long lost friends from other books) in a familiar setting, with Goldberg’s usual impeccable style. Danny Cole is a con man reminiscent of Nick Fox, from Goldberg’s series with Janet Evanovich. The location and the firestorm are a nod to Goldberg’s Eve Ronin series. And two of the new characters, Sharpe and Walker, are arson investigators whose storylines highlight the depth of Goldberg’s research and his meticulous attention to detail in writing.

Malibu Burning is, at its surface, an intriguing take on the typical Southern California firestorm and what could be happening behind the scenes. But it also highlights CA’s frequent use of “convict firefighters” in a way that has you rooting for the criminals. And for this Southern California girl, the hint of a “dig” at SoCal Edison was also a delight.

It’s a well-told story, suspenseful and thrilling, with plenty of twists and turns. Definitely one to read!

This has an unbelievable plot, but who cares when it is this entertaining.
The setting is familiar for anyone who has read other books by Lee Goldberg (and he has written so many. His bibliography runs into pages). In the author's note he has mentioned that he has already written about the massive wildfire on Santa Monica mountains in Malibu in the book "Lost Hills" and this book is also about the same fire from a different perspective.
Excellent characters, super-fast pacing and the humorous writing are Goldberg's top strengths. Add to it, his ability to describe the locales like we are watching a movie - his experience as a script writer for TV shows and movies comes handy.

Danny Cole as the Robin Hood - like thief is much likeable. True to the saying No good deed goes unpunished , Danny's kind heart leads him to his arrest after the heist in the beginning of the book.
Switching to the present day, we have ex-US Marshal Andrew Walker joining the LASD arson investigation to team up with the Veteran Walter Sharpe. The duo is exactly opposite, while Walker is a man of action (he takes pride in the number of criminals he shot), Sharpe is a Sherlock-kind of detective. There is easy banter between the two and I was LOL-ing most of the time.
I am also now reading 'Mr. Monk goes to Germany' (published in 2008) Lt. Andrew Walker makes a cameo. Don't know if Goldberg had already planned to make him a major character in his future books.

The narration alternates between the present-day investigation and Danny's preparation for the big heist in the past. They merge together seamlessly towards a satisfactory end.

Lee Goldberg has become my default go-to author during a book slump, and I am glad he is such a prolific writer with so many different book series.

Thanks to Netgalley, the publishers and the Author for the ARC

Really fun for the most part, but felt the ending was a bit over complicated
