Not gonna lie, I only bought this because of the cute cover. And while art and story did indeed deliver on the cuteness, I'm just not a fan of the episodic content with the very short chapters (4 to 8 pages long). I had the same problem with "Wotakoi" earlier this year.
Shizuka is a helpful cog in the corporate machine who also happens to be a witch. Outside of commuting via broomstick she doesn’t seem to get any advantage from magic though. Then again, she’s caught the eye of her junior, Misono, who seems concerned (and then some) about her well-being…
Hey, another workplace rom-com, but this time with the occasional bit of low-level magic and flying around. Is that enough to add some zest to something we’ve seen before? Or does it lack a certain spark?
The story doesn’t put its best foot forward, being a kind of rote tale of the overworked and overly kind person who lets themselves get taken advantage of and the person who sees this and tries to help. Misono gets fleshed out a little bit from our generic male leads and their interactions are obviously slowly building to something.
It feels like it really has nothing to say, then it suddenly has a LOT to say. We get the truly bizarre introduction of a talking iguana, the strangest familiar I’ve seen in a while, but we also see that Shizuka isn’t lacking in confidence for no reason.
No, Shizuka’s been the subject of gossip and slander about her powers for ages and that makes her try extra hard and hide her abilities to compensate, to the point of over-compensating for them.
Of course, she’s freer with her powers now thanks to an ex-boyfriend who taught her not to hide herself away, which suddenly leads to a whole other storyline that’s actually super dark.
We get hints of this when Shizuka admits that she made some very bad decisions when she first moved to the city and those decisions return to haunt her when said boyfriend returns to try and pick back up where he left off.
What follows is a depressingly realistic depiction of an emotionally manipulative and abusive relationship, as we see that this guy has a pattern of showing off and using Shizuka however he wants and you can feel the threat of physical violence palpable on the page.
When Misono makes a friendly (-ish) gesture and gets rebuffed, he has some words for Shizuka and I like that, while he gives her the strength, she solves her own problems. The moment when she pushes back hard is as cathartic a moment as you could want and the best scene in the book.
It does wobble a bit after that by being all ‘oh this guy moved back because there were rumours about him at the last workplace’, which is probably true, but feels like it’s really wedged in there. It’s okay to just take Shizuka at her word, honestly, and I would have preferred that approach.
Clearly this is the most interesting part of the story. I don’t hate the burgeoning relationship between our leads, they do have a nice bond, though it isn’t particularly novel. The scene that caps off the volume is especially earned after all this heaviness and it can be syrupy going forward.
Acknowledging that adults may have past romantic histories that weren’t super great and dealing with them so directly though? Now that’s worth giving some credit to, especially since it raises the very salient point that even bad relationships can have their good moments that really helped a person.
3.5 stars - this is sweet, possibly too much so, but with a foot in reality that it didn’t necessarily need. I wasn’t going to round this up, but I think I will because I loved Shizuka standing up for herself so much that it felt like it was truly earned.
Wow! This manga was nothing like I expected, but I mean that in the best of ways!
Shizuka I feel is a character you instantly like but also quickly form compassion for because of how sooo many of her coworkers take advantage of her. It really gives you a heart for her character because she is deeply kind and radiates happiness to those around her. However, that doesn't mean she is extremely happy and so thankful for our hero Misono when he is on the scene because he looks out for her, especially when this one guy shows up on the scene.
And speaking of, I could NOT stand that guy! The way he treated Shizuka REALLY upset me and was super caught off guard by that. Granted, I feel it's where the heart of this story starts to comes in because thanks to the consistent love, bluntness, and kindness from Misono, Shizuka is able to start growing in confidence and change how she has neglected herself for so long.
Honestly, while the slow-burn romance is deeply satisfying, I would say seeing Shizuka grow as a person was everything. I was SO happy for her with the ending of this volume and very much looking forward to reading more!
Also, her brother is hilarious!! I loved the questioning of what is with these vibes and how protective he is of her. Komachi is so cool! I hope we see more of him! :D
This is a slice-of-life story with some mild comedy, about a 20-something woman who works as an "office lady" and is also a witch. To start with, she is mostly a doormat, staying over at work to help others catch up, and doing everything at the office from taking care of documents to arranging furniture for meetings, etc. Her coworker Misono, and her pet iguana (!) encourage her to stand up for herself, which becomes especially important when her ex-boyfriend comes back to town and tries to get together with her again, hoping to take advantage of her and her magic.
The parts with the ex-boyfriend were especially hard-hitting. He's pushy and emotionally abusive, doing the normal abuser trick of doing or saying something nasty, then apologizing to try and clear the slate for another round. On top of that, he ingratiated himself to Shizuka the first time around by encouraging her to not be shy about using her magic, and she was grateful to him for that. Today she recognizes on an intuitive level that getting back together with him wouldn't be good for her, but she has trouble with not being perfectly agreeable to anyone who asks her to do anything.... In this part of the story, I'd have preferred that we not see in the ex-boyfriend's head, not so much because it was unpleasant, but because it made his intentions too obvious.
At a mere two volumes long, this is unlikely to dwindle off into running in place with repetitive romance tropes. I like how the rest of the cast supports Shizuka with kindness, and tough love when necessary. The star effects on the cover and in the story itself are super cute!
Bonito bonito boniiiitooo.
I adore this manga. I think it's going to be a two volume series, which is a bummer because I want more of Misono a Shizuka! There is a lovely message about boundaries in relationships and in the workplace. Highly recommended to those who enjoy slice-of-life office romance.
This is absolutely adorable, with two sweet people bumbling through life and dancing around their feelings for one another. It's a slice of life and romance pairing I didn't know I'd enjoy so much.
This was so so wonderful! I really love the artwork in the book, the countless stars littered throughout this manga is a feast for the eyes. I won’t lie, I think it got a touch slow in the middle but once a certain character enters the story, things start to pick up and I didn’t expect the ending of this volume!
Misono is a handsome albeit austere office worker facing the usual every day challenges on the work front. An unexpected but always accommodating help is his pretty Senpai, Shizuka. Shizuka is a witch (with a broom for making her daily commute no less) but is not a very confident young lady. She gets bullied and burdened to do extra work by her co-workers as she doesn’t know how to say no.
Shizuki’s timidness and desire to please people extends to her personal life when her toxic ex-boyfriend (I have never wanted to do actual physical harm to a manga second-lead but this man…..) returns on the scene and expects to pick up where he dumped her off. Misono, who is extremely fond of the kind Shizuka and okay, a wee bit in love with her gets frustrated to see the abysmal treatment meted out to his Senpai. He tries to be a friend and a good one at that to Shizuka and hopes that the timid witch will stand up for herself. And realize that he is the one for her.
Okay, the premise sounded cute on the blurb but I guess I have been raised on a steady fictional diet of bada** heroines and mystical witches who will torch any sub-human who would have the temerity to treat her like an afterthought. My heart goes out to Shizuka but I like my heroines strong and assured. This volume sets the stage for Shizuka taking the first steps towards not being a mystical doormat (with Misono’s help) and I like that but I don’t think I will be continuing with this series.
This is a 3.5-star read for me. It would be higher if we kinda understood the world and why witches are a thing, but apparently, they are. The romance is okay. I liked Misono more than Shizuka. I dig the drama in this one though.
3.5 rounded up for intense cuteness and a very, very real depiction of how it feels when you finally get up your nerve to tell someone off and then spiral into anxious regret.
To be fair this book it’s an extra point for me because it has a witch in it. I know everybody who knows me is rolling their eyes right now but I can’t help it but besides that I found the story to be your basic kind of office romance hashed out 1000 times having a wedge in it kind of helps break it up a little bit not a little space but all I know I found it to be a predictable and boring just average at best I really doubt I’ll be reading the rest of them.
Super not for me. Introducing an extremely light magic element wasn't enough to spice up a fairly standard workplace rom com, nor was the interlude with the heroine's abusive ex-boyfriend, because that too felt rote.
Daily Report About My Witch Senpai is an incredibly cute manga with profound adult issues. This manga revolves around two office workers; Misono and his senpai Shizuka— who also happens to be a witch. This manga follows their daily lives and while the main character is Misono, the story takes such a heavy focus on Shizuka that I forget that. Yet, it follows well in the theme of “daily report” as it feels like we are gradually learning more and more about Shizuka. That being said…
Someone needs to hear this right now. I think that it’s these little things, these tiny choices every day, that begin to set the stage for us to grow into more outspoken people. Into a person that watches out for their own self.
Once in every hundred interactions, make one choice in your favor. This choice can be ordering the food you’ve been craving. Or maybe it’s finally telling an abusive friend that enough is enough. Whatever it is, so long as it aligns with your own moral code, do one thing for you. Gradually, these scary hurdles will seem smaller. They’ll be replaced by new ones. But it’s ok, because change is a part of the human experience. You can change.
Shizuka is dealing with some issues in her inner self, but Misono has his problems too. I like it best when they’re together, because that’s when I’m most likely to see either or both of them smile the brightest.
Half way through “Daily Report About My Witch Senpai” I thought it was cute but maybe a bit too generic for me. It’s about two office workers who are slowly falling in love with one another. Shizuka is a meek woman who is sweet and helpful to everyone she meets. She also happens to be a witch, but in this universe being a witch isn’t really looked at as a big deal. So the witchy aspect of the story doesn’t exactly play a huge role in the narrative, and could be interchanged with any other quirky attribute. Also, Misono, the male lead, is the nice guy who is just looking out for her. It’s cute but certainly something I have read before.
However the latter half of the book definitely picked up a bit and it went from just being cute, to having some pretty solid writing and life advice. I get tired of female manga protagonists who let people walk all over them. So it was nice reading a story where unpacking that trope was part of the focus.
Overall I ended up really liking the story and the whole witchy aesthetic is just fun. I do think this story will probably appeal more to a younger audience, but I’m interested to see where it goes. Gonna go preorder volume 2 now.
hmmm I think this was pretty cute for the format its in. Its in that very short chapter format (they average about 6 pages) but this one is one of the better to me as it isn't as repetitive (ice guy and cool girl jumps to my mind) It has a plot that strings the chapters together and both characters are pretty adorable together. I will read the second volume as that was the original ending. I am just not sure there is enough substance to continue after but who knows! My library has all the volumes.
This was really cute! I’m so glad I finally found it at the bookstore 💖
In all honesty, though, I was not expecting this to portray a past toxic relationship! Shizuka’s ex resurfaces to cause chaos, and I like how the ultimate message is that Shizuka deserves so much better 😭💖 Misono reinforcing her autonomy? I’m sobbing on the floor.
In general, Shizuka and Misono’s interactions were adorable! I found it hilarious how they kept trying to deny their feelings for each other. By the end of the volume, I was DYING for these two cuties to kiss.
He's a hum-drum office worker doing his best. She's his senior at work, and she happens to be a witch. He worries that people are taking advantage of her magic, and it's entirely possible that he's feeling more than respect & admiration. Episodic, slice-of-life. Shaping up to be a sweet office romance.
