Beauty So Golden

Rate this book
You’ve made it to the Tower. Hope starts here.

These are the words we say to greet the scared, the injured, the hungry, when they finally reach the last safe haven. The Tower is the only refuge from the Blighted Plague that has ravaged the land and turned the survivors into flesh-hungry animals.

We are the lucky ones, and everyone else is condemned to die. Mother tells us so.

Then one day, a dangerous man and his brutal brothers threaten to tear these lies apart. Dexer is an adrenaline rush who leaves me breathless. Blaize makes my heart pound in ways I never thought possible, and Keenan fell from grace only to lift me up. They call me Beauty, and I am theirs in a brutal world.

But while the Tower still stands, we’re doomed to fall. I’ve lost so much already, and I won’t watch my men die.

This is no fairy tale. This is war.

Author’s note: Beauty So Golden is a standalone reverse harem romance based on the fairy tale Rapunzel, set in a post-apocalyptic zombie world. The story is sweetly smutty and delicious. The Ledger brother are competitive and possessive, and the heroine never has to choose just one man.

Zombie apocalypse meets the three bears, meets Rapunzel-ish. Formulaic plot with one dimensional characters. Yet another RH that reads like a YA with unimaginative sex. Not horrible, but not very good either. Mediocre, cheesy post-apocalyptic fun.

Beauty So Golden by Lilith Vincent is a post-apocalyptic RH dark romance inspired by Rapunzel, but with barbed wire instead of ivy, a tower that’s medical-grade cold, and danger that doesn’t come from witches, but from the zombies lurking just outside. Rue, our golden girl, lives locked away in The Tower—run by her ruthless mother, a scientist with secrets. But when three ghosts from her past break back into her world, everything Rue thought she knew begins to unravel. What if the safe haven she's been taught to trust is actually the cage?

───♡─────────────

♡ What I adored:
• This is the first book I've read in the series that truly felt like a fairytale reimagining—the Rapunzel influence was baked into every layer 🌿
• The multiple POVs were chef’s kiss—each MMC had his own voice, and their perspectives made the story richer
• Flashbacks added real emotional weight—I could feel the history behind every longing glance and charged silence
• The post-apocalyptic world was atmospheric and eerie in the best way—gritty, gray, and oddly romantic in its ruin 🧟‍♂️
• The balance between action and intimacy was nearly perfect—there was always a heartbeat behind the explosions
• And Rue? A heroine with teeth. No helpless damsel here—just a girl finding her truth and standing in it

✘ What didn’t quite work for me:
• There were some noticeable typos and grammar glitches—not fatal, but a little jarring
• The climax felt a little too quick. Just one chapter, blink-and-it’s-over
• Then, interestingly, the ending lingered for three chapters, which made the pacing feel a bit uneven. I wanted more from the high, and less from the cool-down

❀ Overall:
This is my third little dip into this series—and I’ll be honest, the first two didn’t exactly sweep me off my feet. I kept reading mostly out of curiosity (and a little bit of stubborn loyalty). But this book?
I devoured it. It’s a little gritty, a little romantic, and a lot more cohesive than the others. If the next one keeps this energy, I just might end up reading the whole series.

DNF at 51% in.

This is admittedly a pretty high percentage to endure, and in other circumstances I might have pushed myself to finish the book - not least because it's relatively short. But I just had zero interest in continuing. A shame, because the premise is incredibly intriguing.

19-year-old Rue Adair lives in the Tower, high up and safe from the Blighted zombies who roam the rest of the wasteland that is Earth. While her mother works at finding a cure to the zombie disease, Rue spends her days sniping zombies from the top of the Tower and helping out with other survivors. She's on her usual sniping duty one day when she ends up saving a stranger's life.

Only it isn't a stranger: it's 23-year-old Dexer Ledger, the middle Ledger brother, whom she saved from his abusive father when they were children. Through him, she also reunites with 19-year-old Blaize and 26-year-old Keenan.

So, why couldn't I continue?

❌ The writing is astonishingly undescriptive. This is Lilith Vincent, aka Brianna Hale, who's written Midnight Hunter (a unique dark romance and one of my favourite books). What the hell happened here?? We have a ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE but everything was described so poorly - people, landscape, objects - that I couldn't picture a single thing.

❌ The romance is utterly devoid of chemistry. Rue has tiny interactions with all the boys at varying times of her life, and then apparently they spend the intervening decade obsessing over her... Yeah, no. There was no pent-up sexual tension to their interactions. Everything just felt so tepid. There was so much potential, especially with Keenan the ex-pastor, but it dissipated straightaway.

❌ Not coincidentally, the one sex scene I read came across like a biology manual. Genuinely, the prose was so stilted. 'I did this. She did that. I moaned.' That sort of thing.

I was actually anticipating this book a lot, so I'm quite disappointed.

I miss when Lilith does Why choose stories and I'm so excited to read this baby!! A mix of Rupunzel/Resident evil vibes!!

The world has ended and Rue is a doctor apart of the Tower a place that protects people from the zombies and other creatures she helps rescue Dexer a guy from her past but it isn't sunshine when he wakes up since he feels this place is a prison instead of a safe place. Rue has mixed feelings on how Dexer is treated she let's him go and discovers a horrible secert her mother is keeping now on the run she hopes she runs into Dexer again.

And she runs into someone Father Keenan another man from her past who she has had a crush on he helps her and takes her back to a safe place reuniting back with Dexer and another guy who she had a love/hateish relationship Blaizer. All three Brothers are leaders of the group and want Rue so there is alittle competition between the brothers and I loved it. We got to see each brother with Rue and yes we do have group sexy times ;). Violence and taking on Rue's Mother was good.

I so wish this book was longer because I needed more.

Beauty So Golden was The Walking Dead - smutty RH version. I don’t think it was executed all that well and the characters felt incredibly juvenile. I’m surprised this was written by the same author that wrote Brutal Intentions and Brutal Conquest which I loved. O well, can’t win them all🤷🏻‍♀️.

Genre: Dystopian Romance
Type: Standalone book from Fairytales with a Twist collection
POV: First Person- Multiple
Rating:

Fifteen months since the Blighted Plague wreaked havoc, all Rue Adair knew of this new world contained in the safety of The Tower. When a new survivor Dexer Ledger arrived, Rue started questioning her beliefs, especially with Blaize and Keenan in the equation. But trusting the Ledger brothers could be a matter of life and death.

This one was short and light but entertaining and satisfying. I liked the world, and there were sufficient actions to portray a post-apocalyptic world. My favorite characters were Dexer and Blaize. Sexy times with brothers were of course, the highlight of the book for me.

Beauty So Golden is a story of adaptation and survival. It would appeal to readers looking for a short read of Rapunzel retelling.

DNF’d at 41%. I was disappointed by the writing bc I’ve read other books by this author and loved them!! I’m not sure if it was the zombie apocalypse I wasn’t into or if this was just a random flop all together.

A Beauty So Golden is an entertaining read, but I needed more to feel completely absorbed in the world Mrs Vincent created. I would have loved more details and a deeper plot.
I still enjoyed it and spent hot moments within the pages. The tough heroine didn't convince me entirely, as I could relate to her and the way she treated the male characters. The reverse harem's tone and dynamic left me longing for a deeper and stronger connection.

I am so sorry lilith, but what the fuck was that? this had so much potential as a rapunzel retelling, but it was just really bland. maybe RH isn’t for me 😭 (to be fair, i didn’t realize it was RH until page 61). it was just written so poorly. I’m so sorry queen, i love the other books i’ve read by you.

•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙I look up in surprise. She’s a virgin? Well, fuck, I’m sober and she’s a virgin. Can this get any more awkward?•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙No actually, it can’t.

•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙”Ten. How does that feel, Beauty?”•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙TEN? ARE WE SERIOUS? SCREAMING, WTF?

•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙And suddenly I’m eager to get my girl alone again. Alone with my brothers, that is.•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙.💀

•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙Maybe it’s a crazy idea. Maybe it’s not. I hope she is pregnant. If none of us know who the father is, then she’ll have to belong to all of us.•̩̩͙✩•̩̩͙ I’m all out of words.

This story is a super unique fairytale retelling. This is SUCH a clever way to retell a fairytale, to bring it out of a world of magic and into the ‘real’ world. The author truly took Rapunzel as the inspiration and created something so new and interesting out of it. I don’t know how she even thought to create a zombie apocalypse out of that source material, but it WORKS. There is totally enough of Rapunzel in the story to make the connection, but none of it feels derivative or copied. That’s what really elevated this from a 3 to a 4 star for me, the sheer creativity of this book.

The story itself is intriguing with a little bit of suspense, good romance and characters. There’s not as much depth as I usually like to see, but the story still felt like it had enough. What was really interesting is that this felt a little bit like a short standalone, but still covered everything that needed to be covered without feeling rushed. I hope the rest of the Fairytales with a Twist series delivers on this level because imo the author left some big shoes to fill!

Apocalypse RH/WC romance. All the characters felt fully fleshed out and individual. Lighter than other Lilith Vincent novels - no real bullying (but there is the one stereotypical distrustful/hold out mmc who needs to be won over.)

The fmc is super enjoyable- a competent and pragmatic woman who doesn’t need to be saved by her men. One of the most realistic “wait are we seriously starting a polyamorous relationship?” scenes I’ve read.

I love zombie/dystopian books, specially with why choose! So I was really happy to see Lilith Vincent (whose work I also love) coming out with this.

Positives: For me the plot, the world building, and even the harem dynamics (the jealousy and the light competition in the beginning) were a 5 stars.

I like how this references Rapunzel, but also has great plot points with the zombies, it was wonderful story telling! I loved reading Rue’s background story with all the mmcs from before the apocalypse. I also liked seeing the character development of each one of the brothers.

Negatives: the main thing that I didn’t like was that the relationship was rushed. I didn’t feel a true build up, and the love between the characters ultimately felt a little too flat for me.

Also about the characters, I’m not sure I got to completely know Rue (the fmc). I see that she has a development during the story, from being under her mother’s spell, to finding her freedom. But I guess that because the book was rushed, I also couldn’t see this change clearly… and it simply looked like she was out of character a few times.

I’d also like to point out that if you feel uncomfortable with brothers in the harem, this is not the book for you. I usually don’t mind it (I don’t necessarily like it, but I don’t hate that it’s there), but even I was turned off by the times that this fact was brought up. So be aware!

Overall I really enjoyed this book! I’m happy I’ve read it, and I’ll continue to look forward to see this author’s next works!

A group of authors has gotten together in a new multi-author series to redo a bunch of classic fairytales into something sinful. Lilith Vincent is up first with A Beauty So Golden an apocalyptic Rapunzel retelling. Lilith take on Rapunzel is a reverse harem set after a plague has ravaged the Earth, and zombies are abundant.

The character of Rapunzel is remade into Rue Adair, known as Beauty to the Ledger Brothers. Rue is a very capable young woman with an array of skills who is hard-working, caring, and respectful. You can tell she's the type that genuinely cares about people and does the right thing. I adore her and want the best for her.

Keenan, Dexer, and Blaize Ledger are Rue's love interests. Keenan was the town priest, the golden boy and he knew who he wanted and that was Rue and he was determined to get her. Dexer was the quiet one who faded into the background while Blaize was the troublemaker. Due to a traumatic childhood, the guys' interactions with Rue are different. Keenan is pretty good about things, but his brothers lash out when they didn't know how to take things. While Dexer got over it pretty quickly, Blaize couldn't help himself, constantly lashing cause he couldn't get together. However, the guys eventually work through all their issues with the help of Rue. My favorite part has to be Dexer setting up outings with Rue with his brothers trying to be sneaky about it.

Best Quotes:

"Well, fuck , I’m sober and she’s a virgin. Can this get any more awkward?" - Dexer Ledger

“You’re mine, and you were always meant to be mine.” - Keenan Ledger

"I wonder with a spurt of irritation if Dexer’s about to tell me I should apocalypse-marry his eldest brother..." - Rue

I'm the first to admit I don't like zombies but Lilith did a good job with this story where I didn't mind them. The plot twist was earlier than I expected and it sure changed the game. I was floored but it moved the story along perfectly. The story had a lot of the Rapunzel elements, the beautiful hair, a kind mfc, and the tower but with the added twists that Rapunzel is a badass three princes, the addition of scientists and zombies makes it a brand new story. Small fact, the story is obviously set in modern-day in a small town and for some reason, I heard the characters in a Southern accent. Then there were all these little great moments that had me chuckling throughout the story.

A Beauty So Golden was an interesting take on Rapunzel that I highly enjoyed. Lilith Vincent did a good job bringing Rapunzel to modern times. In the end, it was Rapunzel who did the rescuing and happily ever after doesn't look perfect it looks hopeful.

Oh, wait. I'm not that kind of Christian. Lmao. Never mind... but we do need some holy water 🙈

I can not begin to tell you how difficult it was to pinpoint Dexer's aesthetic even though he's the first one to be introduced. Originally, I thought he was giving off the "bad boy" vibe, but then his brother Blaize arrived with his muscle car, jeans and t-shirt, and leather jacket. Blaize is the one who dressed what I thought Dexer would.

But Dexer? What was Dexer? So, I started thinking, and that got me into the grumpy, boxer vibe. Dexer is a fighter, heart, and soul. His upbringing with his dad wasn't the best, compared to his two brothers. And so the grumpy, boxer/fighter aesthetic he is. Of course, he can have a similar aesthetic to his brother, so bad boy wasn't completely off the table. It would just have to be different. Then I found out he rides motorcycles??? Sir----please.

Then Keenan... Keenan was easy. There were bits and pieces in the beginning that told me already he was the pastor of their town. Then his introduction scene was him riding in on a horse. ✨️cowboy pastor aesthetic✨️ GOD, I LOVED HIM SO MUCH! I have a thing for cowboys, so falling for Keenan was immediate.

But all of that aside, this book was 🔥🔥🔥🔥 Lilith Vincent writes amazing group scenes🥲 Everything about their dynamics together and individually worked well. I literally wanted to meet all the boys. I was curious to know more about them with the crumbs I was given from the beginning.

In an era where the Blighted Plague and Mutagents threaten the safety of its citizens, Rue Adair is tucked away in the Tower where she believes she is protecting her community. When Dexer Ledger, a long-time acquaintance, arrives for treatment, Rue’s point of reference completely changes and she must fight against what she originally thought was safe.

“What if Beauty learns to enjoy being the Ledger brothers’ sweet, horny little slut?” Her eyes widen and her pussy clenches around me. I guess she doesn’t hate the idea, after all.”

The Ledger brothers, Dexer, Blaize and Keenan, each have a reputation and Rue is intrigued by their different personalities. As they continue to battle the Blighted in this dystopian setting, Rue sees the benefits of choosing all the brothers and they welcome her to the family.

In reading other reverse harem books, the post-apocalyptic theme made for an interesting premise, especially given females are scarce. Also, I liked Dexer and how he had to overcome trauma from his past. Blaize added to the chemistry and Keenan brought a taboo element. What transpired in this re-telling of Rapunzel was quite steamy with Rue being fulfilled in every way.

Damn... This was too good to be true! I've been waiting for it since June 2022 when it was announced and it didn't disappoint! Gritty, action-packed and sexy as hell, who can resist a Rapunzel retelling with a twist (and no RH was not the only twist there!)?

I loved the book a lot, the only reason I took down half a leaf is because I wanted more, it was too short. Specifically the scene of taking down the villain, like yes it all worked out great, but more drama and angst would have been soo good! But if we disregard that part, an absolute perfection!

You want zombies (they are called something else here)? You want a crazy scientist? You want survival in the post-apocalyptic world? You want a heroine that is definitely not a damsel in distress and can take care of herself? and lastly, are you ready for 3 brothers that are all pining for her and just want her to themselves? If you answered yes to all of that, well this may be your next favourite read!

For the first time ever I can't choose my favourite in a harem! I always have a favourite (even if I like all of them). All 3 of the Ledger brothers are great in their own way and trust me you will love all of them. You may think that Blaize is the biggest a-hole, but man, the spicy time with him was everything, considering that he was also the one that actually put the idea of a harem in our Beauty's (Rue's) head.

To be honest, I found this book on the lower spectrum of dark romance considering what Lilith usually writes (and I LOVE her books), and I absolutely enjoyed it, but now that I think about it, we do have some TW that some might find not likeable - our harem does consist of blood-related 3 brothers, and one of them is a pastor, but I never had an issue with any of that, so unless you do grab your copy it gets released on 27 Jan!

I received an ARC for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

An ingenious Rupunzel retelling!

For 15 months Rue has been living a lie, one told to her by her mother, but the reality is so much worse! If you can't trust those closest to you, who can you trust? The Tower is not the place the inhabitants think it is, full of secrets, lies and deceit. A plague has spread throughout the world, a plague that has transformed normal humans into mindless zombies, who feel nothing other than the need to feed on humans. The dangers outside the tower are real, not only the blighted but some weird type of mutants too. When Dexter appears outside the tower, everything starts to unravel for Rue. Horrified at what she's discovered, she flees. Thankfully the person who finds her is one of the Ledger brothers, who brings her to their camp. Here she's reunited with all 3 brothers, all of whom she had a serious crush on when things were normal. I love Rue's resilience, her determination and her inherent need to help others.

The yummy brothers each have their own demons, their own pain and cross to bear. I felt like hugging each and every one of them! I love the flashbacks to the encounters each of the brothers had with Rue, told from their POV, really gives insight into the head of each brother, how they felt about Rue, oblivious to each other's feelings and desires. Bur with the 3 of them together with Rue in the same camp, well, goodness, the walls they've built up crumble, the ice in their veins melt and what ensued is a beautiful love story, a very hot love story...by the end of the book my heart had swollen with joy, filled with so much hope that I felt certain even I could tackle the most difficult of situations and circumstances.

One Zombie at a Time…

This is the first book of the Fairytales with a Twist series by different authors and Lilith Vincent has started out with a bang!

The end of the world and the start of a zombie apocalypse leaves Rue with her mother a doctor in a tower. She spends her days treating the sick, restocking supplies and sniping the blighted or zombies in the head. When she spots a survivor she goes to save him and realizes it’s a boy she knew from before Dexer. She’s been the perfect daughter but when she sees her mother not being the good doctor towards Dexer she decides to help him escape the tower, he asks her to leave with him but she thinks she is needed there. When she sees something she’s not supposed to, her view of her life at the tower changes and she has to escape to save her life.

I really enjoyed this zombie apocalypse fairytale nightmare. It was different and I couldn’t put it down. Rue is our Rapunzel with the golden blond hair and the Ledger brothers are her knights in shining armor. Dexer, Keenan and Blaize all knew Rue before the apocalypse, they all had feelings towards her but they thought she was too perfect to even notice them. They grew up rough and felt like she deserved better then them. Until the end of the world happened and all bets are off. Each brother captures a piece of her heart and decide not to make her choose between them.

This had some twisted moments but in the end good defeats evil one day at a time or one zombie at a time.

3 Please Don’t Keep Me at Arm’s Length Stars ⭐

Beauty So Golden is for the post apocalypse lovers out there who need a fix of a trope that’s rare as diamonds! Supposedly a fairytale retelling (just ignore that) it’s a smutty reverse harem with the added bonus of zombies!

"I can fight. I can treat the sick. I know edible and healing plants. You idiots should be falling over yourselves to keep me here. Instead, you’re all patronizing the little lady, saying I’m too pretty for the apocalypse or some bullshit."

A girl that was always judged for her looks and popularity; it means nothing now when everyone is fighting for survival. Courtesy of her mother, Rue Adair is locked away in 'The Tower' focused on saving lives while the world has collapsed.

Three brothers who are no strangers to living on the outskirts of society. Raised poor and abused; they are fighters. Keenan, Dexer and Blaize may not see eye to eye on most things, but they band together when it counts. Yet Rue is just another reason to disagree.

Having escaped 'The Tower', it’s the men who are now rescuing Rue. However, since they’ve all been interested in Rue at one point; who gets to lay claim? Fortunately, with humanity in shambles and social constraints non-existent; why choose?

“Only if you want me to. What if Beauty learns to enjoy being the Ledger brothers’ sweet, horny little slut?” Her eyes widen and her pussy clenches around me. I guess she doesn’t hate the idea, after all.

This is one of my favourite tropes!! However, I didn’t enjoy the whole reverse harem in this instance and between brothers? It’s not the easiest storyline to pull off. Sometimes one dick is sufficient, especially if he wields it well.

The world has ended. Rue is currently living in a tower with her mother who is doctor. While her mother works on a cure for the apocalypse, it’s up to Rue to take care of the other patients to make sure everyone is healthy and not infected. Dexer, someone from her past, comes to the tower for help. When it’s finally time to let Dexer go, she finds out her mothers deepest secret she’s been keeping from everyone so she leaves the tower, hopefully running into Dexer again. On her expedition, she runs into Keenan (Dexer’s older brother), who then takes her to a camp safe for humans.

Lilith Vincent has not disappointed any of her books that I’ve read, so I was really excited to read this. This was a very unique fairy story retelling and I’m totally here for it!! Let me tell you, these Ledger brothers were written to perfection and I found myself wondering where to find me Ledger Brothers. Like most harems, they all bring something different to the relationship and once again it just works. The only thing I would say was this book should have been longer!! I wanted more!! This story is full of adventure, emotion, steam, some twists, and lots of Zombies aka Blighted and Mutagents!! And I highly recommend this book!!

Listen, I can't be blamed for being hooked by this premise. Beauty So Golden is an apocalyptic reverse harem retelling of Rapunzel...with ZOMBIES! I just had to read this one, even though some of the reviews were off-putting. I had to judge for myself. I can't resist romance + zombies.

Lilith Vincent is a solid writer (check out Brutal Conquest), but I'm not sure what happened here. Maybe she published her first draft? Her writing style here is not descriptive enough and it reads like YA, even though this a NA romance. The characters are severely under-developed, as is the world building. The emotional component is definitely missing, which makes the romantic development feel clinical at best. There is no tension at all between Rue and either of the three heroes. Out of all of them, I would argue that Rue's history with Dexer makes their romance the most plausible. Keenan's fascination feels the least plausible.

Overall, this book needed more meat to the story and the character development. I had a fun time reading it, but I wouldn't recommend it. There are better apocalyptic romances out there, even ones with zombies. And definitely check out Lilith Vincent's other books because I promise that she is a much better writer than what this book makes her out to be.

I'm obsessed with this story! I completely blame it for not getting any work done today, because once I started reading I couldn't put it down. I went in blind, only knowing that it was a Rapunzel inspired retelling. And I was floored!! This is Rapunzel meets Resident Evil and make it reverse harem! I loved Rue! She was such a relatable character for me. She has such a good heart, and tries so hard to be who she's "supposed" to be. And then there are the Ledger brothers - Keenan, Dexer and Blaize. I'm so glad this was a RH, because there is absolutely no way to pick a favorite! Bravo Lilith Vincent! This story had so many twists, kept me on the edge of my seat and packed all the spice! This is a MUST READ!!

I got really curious with this author after reading "Brutal Intentions" so maybe I had big expectations when I started this one but I don't know, this was okay I guess.

The story and the characters were kind of one dimensional and even if I there were a few things that I enjoyed (the four main characters were hot together, I'll admit that) it still ended up being only and okay read.

▬ 𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐩𝐞𝐬: dystopia, reverse harem, retelling (Rapunzel & Goldilocks)
▬ 𝐭𝐰: abuse, death

I feel sad that I didn’t like this book as much as I did all the other of lilith Vincent’s books because I’m a lilith lover till I die. I felt like it was quite boring and dragged a lot in the first 70 or so pages which made me consider putting it down, but I have to continue for the sake of reading all her books.
The concept was great, but wasn’t executed as well as her other stories were. Lilith should stick to mafia/mob books but it was nice to see her switch it up a little.
