The Copy/Paste Killer: A Murder-Mystery

Rate this book
In the earliest days of the World Wide Web, one young amateur sleuth encounters a baffling murder-mystery in the sleepy little mountain town of Bearmouth, New England, where beneath a seemingly quiet exterior lurks greed, guilt, lust, deception, and death. Inspired by the novels of Agatha Christie and Margaret Millar, this brain-teaser of a mystery is rated "PG" (no graphic violence or profanity, suitable for a Young Adult audience).March 1993.

When twenty-five-year-old Harriet Gershwin sneaks a peek inside her boyfriend's very expensive new "laptop" computer, she is a little surprised to discover a seemingly random street address stored in the device's clipboard. She doesn't figure it's all that important... until a few days later, when that exact address becomes the scene of a brutal double-murder.

Unsure what to believe or where to turn for advice, Harriet seeks the help of a neighbor in her apartment building, Claudette Sato, whose enthusiastic efforts to figure out Roger's involvement in the two slayings may uncover secrets both women end up wishing had stayed buried. Faced with red herrings and dead-ends galore, Claudette races to unravel the tangled web of clues and unmask the killer—before it's too late.

Mmm, how I do like a good mystery.

This had all the right ingredients – interesting amateur sleuths, intrigue into the killer’s motive and identity, tension building to the dramatic reveal. It’s always annoying when reading or watching crime dramas to guess the ending, but this didn’t fall into that trap.

I liked the ‘Interludes’ of heightened danger, these were vividly described, holding my alert attention.

Overall, an enjoyable read.

Compared to those first two novels of mine, this one’s Nobel Prize worthy!

A Thrilling Ride

I grew up with the author, but that wasn't what drew me in as I started reading The Copy/Paste Killer. It was the interludes that started off making little sense and then grew more and more interesting. It wasn't until the second to last one that it hit me who the murderer was and it just got better and better. Claudette was very relatable to me, and I hope to read about her exploits with Burl (and NOT Noah) again soon. Noah can suck a lemon, man, suck a really sour one too. I couldn't rate this a 4.5 star book, but it absolutely was. Way to go, Stooge, you did great!!!

This book really took me by surprise! I was contacted by the author to see if I would read this book and I am so glad that I accepted! This book is set during the very early days of the world wide web and before the internet really took off.

Harriet Gershwin is a young woman who lives in Bearmouth, New England and works at a dentist's office. Pretty much just the girl next door. Her boyfriend, Roger, has just procured an expensive laptop. He has told her not to touch it but one night she just can't help her curiosity and she stumbles upon an address that he copied and then pasted into his clipboard. On the surface, it seems like an innocuous address, that is until she hears on the news that a double murder has taken place there.

Is Roger a murderer? Even worse is he a double murderer? Harriet is confused and not sure what to think and being new in town, she doesn't really have anyone she can turn to. She ends up going downstairs to her neighbor, Claudette Soto and they begin to form a friendship. Claudette immediately throws herself into figuring out if Roger is involved with the murders. Unfortunately, all too late, they will both uncover secrets that should have stayed hidden. Can Claudette uncover who the killer really is before she herself becomes a victim?

This book is full of twists and turns, false clues and dead ends. I had no idea how this was going to end, and I literally gasped when the killer was revealed. I had so many ideas on who it might be but had completely ignored the one person that made sense. The story is well written and entertaining. If you love a good mystery, then this is the book for you.

Another fun installment in the Bearmouth mystery series. This one is more character-driven than the previous books and we get to know a lot more about the personal life of the amateur sleuth Claudette Sato, including her work and love life, both of which unfold in the world of internet/software start-ups in 1990s. Kept me guessing to the end!

This was a fun mystery that is set in the early 90’s. The lead character is really smart and funny. I could relate to her in situations. Nothing gory or outrageous, just a good mystery that keeps you engaged throughout the book.

Terrible book with terrible writing and annoying characters. The narration was confusing and sloppy. The plot was unrealistic and the author provided too many irrelevant details.

Don’t even waste your time reading the book description. I’d give this a 0/5 stars if I could.
