Nicole Fox writes smart, sexy mafia romance novels. She is a crazy cat lady in her late 30s with a coffee addiction, an overactive imagination, and a husband who somehow puts up with her impulsive need to keep buying new plants for their house.
1.5 stars and that is being generous. Geesh, talk about a stupid idiotic heroine! I couldn't stand her. She sees a hot guy in a restaurant as she is having the date from hell and locks eyeballs with him then hot guy comes over as her date was getting aggressive and scares him off. This leads to them having drinks and quicker than a fly that gets caught in sticky paper they are in the bathroom having raw unprotected sex. What happens next is complete chaos and gunshots being fired, the heroine gets kiddnapped, released, and put into witness protection. The sexy hero is a Bratva mob boss in a war with his cousin and the heroine in caught up in this whole debacle. Six years pass in this time the heroine has had her Bratva secret baby, gotten engaged ( turns out the fiancee is the cousin of sexy man and has been in a relationship with the heroine for 11/2 years and they are days away from marrying till hero kidnapped her and married her himself)The fiancee gave her a false name and she did not know he was the hero's cousin. So all the while she was screwing the cousin, she was thinking of hero.Ick,I really hate story lines like this. For all the heroine likes to think she is a strong independent women, she was was just a bag of insecurities. Yea,not invested in part 2 to continue with this saga, way too long and drawn out.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
I couldn’t stand any of the characters in this books. The heroine is weak. She favors a doormat and the H is just constantly shitting on her.
I picked this book because I love the secret baby trope but I did not enjoy this at all. It was so drawn out. I love the push and pull between the MCs usually but this was not that. The entire book Isaak is telling her she means nothing to him. Obviously we know that he’s a liar. But she continues to sleep with him while he treats her like a live in prostitute. All their interactions were just not fulfilling. I’m not reading the second book in the duet. These characters are one dimensional. I do enjoy an asshole alpha but this dude takes it to another level and I don’t think l can go through another round of this MC.
OMG. This book dragged me out of my book slump. LOL
UNPUTDOWNABLE!!! It was intense, twisted, fire, full of secrets. There was a lot of arguments. Huge a-hole, alpha hero. I love a mean hero so maybe that's why I was sucked in and couldn't put it down. Lol
Isaak and Cami met when Cami was on a blind date. He stepped in to "save" her. They had an intense steamy scene in the bathroom, and then she was kidnapped right after. Her life changed whether for the better or worst, you'll have to read to find out. Lol She ended up pregnant, and haven't seen Isaak for 6 years. They met again on her wedding day with another man. Have to say, this was barely at least 20% in or so, and so much more happens.
I actually loved loved this series…. A page turner for sure and especially book number 2!!!! Going to give more of a review in book number 2, but a safe and amazing mafia story full of a crazy possessive hero and a heroine I really liked who’s strong
Isaac is truly is a monster. Anyone who can be as verbally and emotionally abusive as he can is clearly filth, and the fact that the author is writing his treatment of her like he's a romantic character is ridiculous. The stories that both Isaac's mother and his brother tell Camila should be CAUTIONARY tales, SHOULD clearly tell her what he would be like, what he would do to her and any children he controlled; and that's what it would be, control, because it is clear this character, as written, is nothing but a control freak and bully. What responsible mature adult NOT thinking with their genitals would wonder for even a second if a man like the abusive, manipulative, hateful, controlling piece of trash that Isaac is, should know about a child he donated sperm for?
What is worse, is that Isaac and Camila keep having these arguments during which he repeatedly shows her exactly who he is, and she continues ignoring it, excusing his behavior -- romanticizing it even -- and falling into his bed like he's something he's not. He's not a prince, he's not a nice guy, he's not a romantic lead, he's not even a "dark" romantic lead, he doesn't love, he owns -- he's a violent thug and an hypocritical troglodyte who uses people up until there's nothing useful left, and then they're either dead, or he just discards them, just like he's basically done his own mother.
To be fair, I say the fights where he's showing her exactly what he is and she's not paying attention are the worst, and they're not. The worst are her moments of clarity, when she rages and admits that he's not worth it, or that she shouldn't let herself fall for the guy who kidnapped, forced marriage, imprisoned and then controlled every tiny aspect of her life, or that it's not good that she's allowing herself to fall into bed with him when he's so verbally and emotionally abusive and yet she keeps doing it again and again. Cami has no self-control and even less self-respect, she supposedly gets furious with herself for falling for the wrong man, but the minute he touches her or panders to her vanity with a few pretty words, she's back to being a brainless hormone driven twit and all of her conviction is nowhere to be found. Loyalty is in their actions, their respect and he has none for her. I need more from my female leads than a smart mouth and convictions easily discarded, and while this one is indeed feisty in brilliant flashes that last a few hopeful seconds, it's all undone and hollow because the minute he looks at her, her panties come off and her brain just disappears, and any intelligent breakthroughs you think she gas finally come to disappear like the ephemera they are. I could only take the whiplash and disappointment a couple of times before I was sick of it and her. Any sympathy I had for Cami ended between her bouts of clarity followed by her complete lack of brain cells where she let him treat her like trash but she fell into bed with him anyway. I agree with several of the other reviewers, I hate all of these characters with the exception of Lachlan, the Scottish bodyguard who quickly gets killed off unfortunately, and her sister Brianna, but we don't get much of her either. Instead we're stuck with a fickle female lead who vacillates between understanding what a jerk this guy is and "her traitorous body."
I struggle with the next part of my review and it's a bit of a spoiler, but feel it's important enough for people who have triggers regarding parental kidnapping -- you might not want to get to the end of the book and you certainly won't want to read the second one because that's where it's heading. As lackadaisical as the female lead is about the mistreatment and abuse dished out by the male lead I have no doubt the author will paint the parental kidnapping as a reasonable positive turning point in their relationship instead of the unforgivable act it is. Besides rape and human trafficking, parents kidnapping their own children for selfish reasons is one of the offenses I can find no excuse or redemption for, and so I'm trepidatious about continuing with the train wreck and frustration I can see headed down the road. There are parts of the story that have really pulled me in, but I just cannot take a woman who would let a man treat her this badly and who is so pathetically weak which is made worse by the fact that she knows she's doing it.
All of this is fairly sad because the grammar, editing, diction and syntax are all really pretty solid, and overall with a notable exception: the author needs to do research on the Russian organized crime culture because the nomenclature and titles for the various positions within the syndicate are completely incorrect, which severely grated on my nerves especially since Russian language text is sprinkled throughout the book in an effort to lend authenticity, but the author couldn't get the titles and positions and other bratva nomenclature from RUSSIAN organized crime syndicate down. A bratva leader is a "Pakhan" NOT a "Don" like in the Italian/Sicilian mob. I have to admit the writing captures my attention and I have this sick fascination and want to know what happens, but I really hate the two lead characters. That dislike really interferes with my enjoyment of the book. I'd love it if the female lead weren't so frustrating fickle, weak willed, lacking in self-control, and stupid. It would also be great if the male lead had an ounce of ANY redeeming quality, but he doesn't. I just can't get behind a story where a man like that gets the woman and that's considered an HEA.
Isaak was too much of an asshole for me to get on his side. He treats Cami terribly, embarrassing her and forcing her to do things. Then when she shows that somehow she cares for him, he drives home that she means nothing to him and is cold. Why are you being such a dick?
Then we have Cami, who despite being treated like trash, still wants this man. Are looks and sex really so important that you'll ignore everything else? Stand up for yourself and leave him in the dust.
This book went on and on. The whole story could have been written into one book. All those words and barely any development in the main characters relationships. Nothing sustainable at least.
This book got me out of my slump. However, it isn't for everyone. There are some minor things such as the heroine being weak when it comes to the hero. Although this is sometimes annoying for people, it needs to be this way for the book to work. The meeting of the two is amazing and if it wasn't for the odd thing, I would 100% recommend this book. Because of certain things, I have chosen to give this book 4 stars.
I have never read a book where i so desperately wanted a main character to die. The storyline is rediculous and seriously what woman would want this life? I thought 50 shades of grey was bad. This is worse. The mind manipulation is beyond horrid. And yet the author still tries to get you to feel for him. Nope nope nope f@ckn no way
Okeyyy sooo this series was super entertaining but the characters especially the MFC (Cami) irritated me so much. She was insecure, bitchy half the time and a doormat. She literally hated every female character that just spoke to Isaak and called them names such as gold digger or whore. She did not know what she wanted and confused the heck out of me most of the time. Isaak also kinda confused me but at least he was better than Cami😂 Why am I giving this series a higher rating especially the first book because it captured my attention and I couldn't stop reading. Yes there was OTT drama but it was entertaining.
Don't go into this expecting some kind of explosive chemistry there was none 💀It was just filled with drama and back and forth between the characters that I actually enjoyed (no judgement please I was in the mood for it)
The plot twist in the end of the second book had me gasping beacuse I wasn't expecting it. I just think that as an overall series it was an enjoyable read IF YOUR IN THE MOOD. If you can't handle OTT drama and irritating characters (Cami, I'm talking about you b*tch) then its probaby better that you don't read it 😝
Wow I have really enjoyed this book. It’s starts with Cami being on a blind date that’s not going well and Isaak is the handsome stranger who she can’t take her eyes off and he can’t take his eyes off her. He rescues her from the date and they have sex in the bathroom that night, however explosions and gun fire erupts and ends their night. Isaak is the bratva Don and Cami just became a target by his enemy and cousin Maxim and she is kidnapped. They fast forward 6 years and Isaak is back on her wedding day but her soon to be husband isn’t who he said he was and Isaak says she is in danger. Then the story is all about their fiery relationship and there are some sexy scenes but it seems Cami can’t break through the tough bratva dons walls and she needs to leave to protect her daughter but Isaak has no idea he has a daughter (yet). I’m now going to download book 2 as that ending isn’t going to go down well with Cami.
I mean.. it was alright. It was predicable, it was like a mediocre wattpad mafia story.
Now I will say this. Mafia stories are hard to get right. They can be really tacky and weak or they can be magnificent. And this one, well, to me it wasn’t magnificent.
It was like I said earlier predictable, and the author, of course, split what could have been one book, into two and ends the first on a cliff hanger.
I’m not intrigued enough to read the second.
Also, I’m not Russian, nor do I claim to know the language…. But google translate said the word he used to call her kitten… means another kind of kitten if you catch my drift..
Isaac and Camila. Russian mafia, the Vorobev family. The book starts out on a bad date that ends in an intriging gun fight . Camila is taken into the witness protection program. 6 years later on her wedding day to Maxim Vorobev, she is abducted by Isaac Vorobev. He tells her that she was taken to keep her from his cousin. She becomes a pawn between the cousins war. They is so much arguing, it is hard to tell what is going on some of the time, but it always ends in sex. This is this authors MO.
I read this book in one sitting. I was supposed to do some light reading to help me sleep. It’s 2:02am and I’m not asleep.
Nicole Fox infuses all her books with some sort of drug that makes you lose track of time and fall in love with the douche bag Russian pakhan with BDE.
Was this guy nice? No. Did he have any redeeming qualities to make up for it? Not really. Am I rooting for him? You bet your fucking ass I am.
Also this is a duet. Literally you need to read these books back to back or you get a half of a story.
A fast-paced and steamy start to a duet. Isaak and Cami when she is on a bad date and he rescues her. Sparks fly and she ends up pregnant. Now six years later, she shows up to stop her wedding. Will those same sparks still fly? Fast-paced read with loads of drama, suspense and steam. Great characters with loads of drama, suspense and steam. Looking forward to the second book.
Ok, I do not understand the rating for this. Everyone is entitled to their opinions, but let's be honest... This was not good.
I love dialogue-driven plots, but this was dialogue upon dialogue which read like a script more than a book.
Also, that scene of them going to the restaurant and him ripping her clothes to force her into the dress? I'd appreciate the heroine more if she played him, challenged him and tried to leave that car naked.
Typical mafia romance. If you like a bully romance this book will be for you. It was okay for me in the romance department but the overall story keeps you reading.
Nicole writes some of most intriguing and consuming mafia stories! With Velvet Devil we escape into the Bravta world with captivating and alluring characters. Isaak and Camila’s story is gripping, tantalizing and passionate. You hate and love Isaak. By revealing her secret will Isaak chose family above the Bravta? Enjoy this enticing and intriguing page-turner. Remarkably written Nicole👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Bad boy….check Bod boy’s crazy brother/friend…check Bad boy’s Kryptonie…check ….check and check By the time you’ve figured out who is who and what is what, you’re already hooked, and you may as well give up the fight and prepare yourself for an all-nighter! Can’t say I didn’t warn you. Camila out on a date her sister had a hand in setting up and she is not enjoying the man she is with he is rude, nasty, outward appearance isn’t all that and yet she finds a total stranger and one look sends her blood from cold to hot. When he rescues her from the horrible date the attraction is just too much they end up together one time but he leaves her with the best part of himself that will arrive nine month later. Isaak sexy as all get out savior from the horrible date, watches the interesting interaction and steps in when he is needed although, never did he expect the attraction to be so intense one he can’t just walk away from and being with her wasn’t part of the plan it just kind of happened. This is where you need to buckle up because this is going to be a bumpy ride for Cami because she learns Isaak is the oldest son of the Don of the Bratva and when his father dies he takes over or that is how it is suppose to work but his cousin feels like he should be Don and thus a war begins and his Cami is caught up in the middle putting a target on her and her child head of course the authorities want all the information she can provide them and offering to put her in witness protection (like that will keep her safe …yeah we are talking about the Bratva) but not before she is kidnapped, forced into marrying him (but she didn’t know she was marrying his cousin whom he has been fighting under a different name) but where does it all lead two people who can’t stay away from each other and yet they can’t seem to trust each other but they will need to trust each in order to make it out alive will they learn to work together?
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
2.5 stars. Eh. What can I say, I have read better Mafia romance books. Here’s the thing, the female protagonist is a bit of a whiner/weenie. She thinks she’s tough and capable until she thinks about the male protagonist’s big dick and then, whoosh, all common sense departs! What’s a captive girl to do??!! (Cue the swooning). So here she is, the “captive” of one Mafia boss, stolen from her fake fiancé (the rival Mafia boss) and now she must not only fight and f@ck her way out of this terrible situation, while at the same time…not let on to the Big Bad Don that they have a secret daughter!!!😱 And do we ever see the Big Bad Don do anything remotely evil, or Mafia like? Nope. He just runs around a lot proclaiming to all and sundry that he is The Don!!
So what is a bookish (she’s a librarian!) beautiful (big green limpid eyes and flowing blonde locks) to do? Sigh. It’s all rather silly and not really well written. Definitely won’t be reading the second book. My poor brain cells can’t afford to read such ridiculous stuff.
I have only just discovered the world of mafia romance, with the strong male anti-hero learning that love isn't just about being dominant and wanting to own the female lead.
This book didn't give me any of that. Instead I got a one night stand that resulted in a pregnancy and a weak female lead who lets every male she meets treat her like dirt; and yet would still come back wagging her tail expecting a different outcome. I actually felt anxious when reading some of scenes, we kept getting told what a strong and independent person she was but instead we were given a woman who constantly chooses a mentally abusive man (who is good in bed) over the well-being of herself and her child. Maybe this is what the author was going for, if that's the case she did a great job of showing what gas lighting can look like.
