The Wolf of Westmore

Rate this book
Little Red Riding Hood meets Romeo and Juliet

Lord Wulfric Bane, the Duke of Westmore knows that blood is thicker than water, that duty is more important than personal desire, and that some things, like falling in love, are a waste of time.

Cosseted and coddled Lady Jocelyn Capehart has been bred to be the perfect lady. On the outside, she is demure, sweet, and biddable, but on the inside, a vixen longs to break free of her cage.

When a chance meeting at a sultry club leads to one sinfully explosive night that neither of them can forget, nothing, not even the bad blood between their families, will keep them apart.

Oh my. My first Amalie Howard story and I was impressed. I’ll definitely be looking through her backlist.

It hadn’t been fear that had tumbled through her as her eyes had greedily taken in the dark unruly hair, the thick layer of matching scruff on that hard jaw, and the glint in those predatory eyes, even from across an entire room…it had been a bolt of pure, unmitigated lust. And then, when that predacious gaze had met hers, spearing her like the trembling prey she was, Jocelyn hadn’t been able to breathe.

This was, at its core, a sensual, deliciously erotic story. Wowza, Jocelyn and Wulfric were blazing hot together. But it wasn’t just great sex; it was blossoming intimacy, too, and that added a touch of sweetness to the intense heat. And Wulfric was just so… so… aaah I’m at a loss for words. A man who stepped right out of my fantasies and into this novella. Add two families who’ve been enemies for centuries, villainous relatives (Jocelyn did stick it to them in glorious fashion), a tight plot and I was one very happy reader.

“Are you arguing with me, Little Red?” A tremor ran through her at the name. […] “What if I am?” she managed, knowing she was provoking the beast and willing to take the consequences. Desperate for them, even. His head cocked to one side, lips baring in a predatory smirk, eyes shining with an unholy light. “Jocelyn.” A clear warning. A last chance. Here he was, the feared, revered Wolf of Westmore in all his savage, beastly glory. She let her knees fall apart. “Punish me then.”

I also loved the nod to Little Red Riding Hood and the big bad wolf. Every time Wulfric called her Little Red, I smiled.

Lady Jocelyn is not going to let a centuries old family feud stop her from getting her back blown out. This romance was delicious. Jocelyn was a brave and kind heroine who knew exactly what she wanted and wasn't afraid to get it. In this case, she wants her incredibly sexy nemesis Lord Wulfric Bane to deflower her before she’s forced to marry a man that’s old enough to be her father. Wulfric was the dominant hero of my dreams who is hell bent on revenge. That is, until love punches him in the face (not literally). This is novella length, so things happen quickly, but I felt like the pacing was perfect.

Took off half a star because I felt like they had to dumb Jocelyn down a little for the whole "the heroine's life is in danger in the 3rd act" bit but otherwise this was a fantastic, steamy read ❤️

I originally read this in the Big Duke Energy anthology, and figured I would move my review over here too!

Should I read in order?
If you want the full knowledge of character cast, start with book 1 of the Everleigh Sisters series, The Beast of Beswick. I do think this one works decently as a stand alone. There is some minor page time with the Marquess of Roth and Isobel (the characters from book 2, The Rakehell of Roth) though.

Basic plot:
Lady Jocelyn and Lord Wulfric Bane are enemies. Born to rival families, Jocelyn’s father’s actions has only called Wulfric’s desire for revenge to come to the forefront. Jocelyn knows who she wants to share a night of passion despite the danger – and she disguises herself to buy the Duke of Westmore at a charity auction.

Give this a try if you want:
- Late Regency, England (1822)
- Tiny heroine, huge hero
- Ruined heroine – and hero...in a way
- Little Red Riding Hood feels
- Medium to high steam with light kink – 3 full scenes that include spanking, light bondage, and throat play
- Sold hero

Ages:
- Heroine is 23, hero is “older than that”

My thoughts:
I really enjoyed this novella! I’m a bit behind on Howard’s work. I wish I had read the prior novel but this one does work well as a stand alone.

Lady Jocelyn has always felt disposable and looked over by her father. She’s determined to make her own way, at least in who she loses her virginity to. Overall I liked Jocelyn, though I wasn’t overly in love with how she exposed their relationship.

Wulfric was my type of hero – dark and gruff and quite naughty in the bedroom.

The character depth felt pretty good for a novella and the sex was steamy. I do wish the kink had been better presented to the heroine in some of the scenes though. She seemed a bit...concerned some of the time and it lessened my enjoyment a touch.

Content Warnings:

Locations of kisses/intimate scenes – this story is from 40%-59% of the anthology:

If time travel is possible someday, believe me when I say I'll use it to visit a sex club during the regency era. Why? Well, according to a bunch of historical romances, these clubs are apparently the perfect place to meet your future husband who happens to be a duke and super rich. Plus, I am generally curious about the establishments in the 19th century...but back to my review.

Overall, "The Wolf of Westmore'' is a pretty good novella. The plot fits perfectly in the 150 pages frame and I had a good time reading it. I loved the mix of Cinderella and Red Riding Hood-retelling. I still don't understand how I always end up reading about BDSM relationships, but whatever. My only points of critique would be:
(1) They did not wear drawers in the regency era.
(2) How can someone be in love after knowing each other for like a couple of hours?
(3) Who gets married after knowing each other for like a week and a half? Also considering that they only spend like 3 days together...
(4) The talking points about consent and the right of a woman to her own body felt a bit too modern. I have read the Beast of Beswick (the first novel of the series) and I overall enjoyed how the FMC used ideas of the enlightenment period to make points about the struggles and mistreatment of women, but in this novella the whole feminist talking points felt a touch too modern. Don't get me wrong; I love when historical romances bring up consent and free will etc., but it hugely depends on the delivery to make it appear accurate to the time period. If it is woven into the story nicely, I usually enjoy historical romances having discussion about these topics, but not when it's just there to be there...if you know what I mean.
Considering all that, I still think it's a nice novella and maybe a good starting point for enjoying Amalie Howard's books.

BTW she was the author of one of my first historical romance novels I have ever read. So maybe I am a bit biased...but who cares.

While this was a very short story, I really enjoyed it! I love Amalie Howard's writing style and this was no different. I love that this was a family feud book. I love that it was a secret identity book (think masks, not lying about their identity). And I just really enjoyed the story overall. Yes, this was short and very fast paced; however, I think that is expected when reading a novella. Overall, I really enjoyed this addition to the series.

A classic - Lady Jocelyn goes in disguise to Lord Westmore's club to lose her virginity, which she does with Lord Westmore, so that she does not have to marry the elderly Marquess her father has chosen for her. I liked this story, even though I've read similar before. Good characters and storyline, and a quick read. I love a happy ever after ending ❤ 4☆

Like the previous two books in this series, it’s barely a historical romance. Is it the Regency? Victorian? Georgian? It’s impossible to tell. The characters are all entirely too contemporary. The language is too colloquial. I gave up at 74% - the fact that this is only a 115 page book should tell you something if I couldn’t even suffer through the last 30 pages. When the hero rescues the heroine from the clutches of the lecherous villain, you would think they might want to hightail it out of the deserted hunting box. But no, it’s sexy times in the study even though the hero supposedly has been celibate for years. He couldn’t wait a couple of hours for the ride back to London.

I’ll never know what happened next I just couldn’t continue

Me reading previous book: omg these side characters! So excited for their story, CANNOT wait!!!

Me reading their actual book: who are these people again???

😅😅😅

All in all, I wish Westmore and Jocelyn got a full-on story instead of a novella, because it really felt like there could've been more to their story. Instead, all the development seemed rushed.

Also, again the language itself (especially dialogues) felt too modern and took me out of the story.

This was certainly a racy read! I loved the play on red riding hood. Wolf was tamed by Red in the end

This was too short! I want more! More Joclynn and Westmore. More background on the feud between the Capeharts and the Banes. More reason to despise Joclynn's awful parents and more time to get to know her delightful grandmother who must surely be a cohort of Bestwick's wonderful Aunt Mabel. And of course, more glimpses of Thane and Astrid and Winter and Isabel and their happily ever afters.

So much shorter than the previous two novels! I finished it in one evening. Still good though. I like how this author’s heroines aren’t completely helpless, always ready to knee someone in the balls or stab them with a hat pin.

It was such a shame that this felt so rushed! I really don't think it worked as a novella - it felt more like an unfinished draft. If this could be expanded into a full length book, it would be perfect.

The Wolf of Westmore by Amalie Howard

Wulfric Bane, the Duke of Westmore knows he’s not destined for love and has instead turned his attention toward doing everything in his power to ruin the Duke of Tyne, his family’s long time enemy. Tyne’s sheltered daughter, Lady Jocelyn Capehart is eager to shed the chains of her upbringing and make her own decisions, even if it is only for one night before she’s forced into marriage to a man older enough to be her grandfather. But her one anonymous night with Wulfric at his exclusive club soon turns into more than he bargained for and a connection neither can ignore.

This is probably my favorite thing I’ve ever read from Amalie Howard. There were a lot of tropes and elements employed here that I liked: the feuding families, the loose fairy tale retelling, the need to escape an arranged marriage. My only complaint was the naivete and gullibility of the heroine with regards to her family, but thankfully, with this being a short novella there really wasn’t time for that to become really annoying. The chemistry and connection between Jocelyn and Wulfric were palpable and I loved that she took her future and her desires into her own hands and did something about it. I enjoyed that Wulfric was able to set aside his pride and take hold of his own happiness after so many years of grief and tumult in his life. These elements made this a surprisingly hopeful, feel-good story in the end, and the high steam level was just another plus.

Couple of jumbled thoughts -
1. Amalie Howard seems to believe England is littered with dukes. All three heroes in this series were dukes/future dukes, then there's her other two series Daring Dukes and _. Total of 10 dukes and this isn't even counting the side characters like Jocelyn's father.
2. Overall nice book, very short and insta-lovey but I did like that there was some actual kinky shit that went on. Other regencies always talk about "depraved" thoughts/behaviours when absolutely nothing extreme goes on. Come to think of it, the other two books in the series had kinky shit going on too but this one felt like the most especially for how short it was.
3. Don't fucking have sex when you're trying to escape from being kidnapped you sex-crazed nitwits.
4. Very obvious references to Romeo & Juliet, was explicitly said twice. Besides that there was the masquerade, the centuries long feud between the two families, the heroine's name (Jocelyn Capehart which is somewhat similar to Juliet Capulet), her cousin Tybalt, the duel between Wulfric and Tybalt, she's supposed to marry Perrin (Paris). It was a fun little game to find all the similarities.
5. Crazy that Prue is his half-sister. I thought this was gonna be a second love kind of story.

A wonderful novella to end the fantastic Regency Rogues series.
The Wolf of Westmore gets 5 amazing *****! This story is fire and I absolutely love the Romeo and Juliet retelling. For those of you who are not familiar with the Amalie Howard's Regency Rogues series, this short story rounds up the trilogy of the characters presented in the previous two novels, although the hero Wulfric is more prominent in the second novel, the Rakehell of Roth. I highly recommend reading this series, the Beast of Beswick is one of my all-time favorite historical romances and I have reread it numerous times. The Rakehell of Roth although not my favorite, was also very good, and would give more background information on this hero and heroine's connection through Prudence and her terrible fate. In fact, this short story is even better than the second novel in the series and I'm glad to see Wulfric of Westmore get his HEA. The romance, the family rivalry, and the spice in this story are just dynamite!!!!

She was his whole world--his sun, his moon, all the bright stars in his universe.

4 stars!

This novella was exactly what I needed to complete my book reading challenge this month, and although it felt too short, I enjoyed it nonetheless. I usually don't enjoy stories with a sex club setting, but I loved how Jocelyn took her pleasure into her own hands before she was robbed of her freedom. I love an obsessed and possessive hero, and Wulfric played that part so well as he lusted silently over his Little Red. The ending had a smidge of drama and danger, and I enjoyed seeing Roth and Beswick again🖤

Tropes: forbidden love, Little Red Riding Hood inspiration, alpha j/p hero, feisty heroine, marriage of convenience, slight BDSM (delayed gratification, bondage, spanking), duel at dawn, feuding families, band of brothers, STEAMY🔥

A family feud has kept warring families apart for so long that they have lost sight of the original reasons for the discord between them. Used by her family as a pawn in the accumulation of more land and the opportunity to put a further spoke in Westmore's wheel, Lady Jocelyn determines her own fate, putting her into the enticing hands of the Wolf of Westmore. With an attraction that transcends the bitterness and recriminations between the two families, Jocelyn and Wulfric gravitate toward one another but do not count on the mischief stirred up by her conniving cousin. I originally read this entertaining novel as part of the Big Duke Energy anthology and this is my honest and voluntary review.

The Wolf of Westmore is the third book in The Regency Rogues series by Amalie Howard.

This is a novella length erotic book with Jocelyn and the Wolf of Westmore as MCs. When Jocelyn’s father decides to marry her off to a man her grandpa’s age for his own gain, she plans an act of rebellion and purchases Wulfric’s night at an auction in order to ruin herself.

This was quite a spicy take on a historical romance and I was surprised to read this level of heat in a book set during the regency era. The author did not shy away from providing vivid details about anything the MCs decided to engage in.

I am not entirely sure that I was a fan of this writing but putting erotica aside, i enjoyed the basic storyline of the book and won’t have minded a full length novella dedicated to Jocelyn and Wulfric’s story.

3 stars.

We have returned to the Regency Rogues series and I even mentioned in my review of the last book in this series that I was waiting on Westmore’s story. It does not disappoint. It is everything I wanted in his book. A great story, sexy times, angst and a man who is brought to his knees by the love of a woman (in the best sense). For a short story, this one packed a big punch. The Regency Rogues series is my favorite series of Amalie’s. I am staggered by how fantastic this story is. Okay, I could keep on gushing but I won’t. This is a story not to be missed. I read this as part of the Big Duke Energy anthology.

Fun!

This was a fun mesh of Romeo and Juliet and Little Red Riding Hood. It was a bit shorter than I expected, but it was still fun to read and see how things panned out for the Duke of Westmore. I was waiting to see what happened to him after the other two books in the series.
I liked how Jocelyn was independent and not a push over. I did find her loyalty to her despicable father and mother a bit odd. I couldn’t fully understand why she wanted to remain loyal to them. At least her cousin had a bit of redemption.
It was a fun and enjoyable story overall. The Duke was certainly a dom.

This novella packs a lot of punch for such a quick read! Steamy sex (with a bit BDSM thrown in), action, drama and a whole lot of heart!
The MMC, Wolfric, is the quintessential bad boy with a heart of gold. The MFC Jocelyn is smart, determined and sassy. Howard has a real talent for writing strong and interesting female characters. This is the third book of a series…I adored the first two…and this one doesn’t disappoint!

This book IS enemies-to-lovers personified. I loved the main characters in this book. Feisty Jocelyn Tyne is destined for a life she dreads. Nicknamed “The Wolf”, Wulfric Bane, is the Duke of Westmore is doing what every other Duke in his family has done for centuries-trying to destroy the Tynes. The feud between the Tynes and the Banes stops here and now, if Jocelyn has anything to say (or do) about it. And this girl DOES. 💛Wulfric’s character development is astonishing! The arc of these characters is stressful and wonderful and you are rooting for both of them! I’m so proud of Jocelyn taking control of her own life, standing up to be heard and never looking back. 💛Absolutely LOVE the hea in this book Ms. Howard! Most definitely a 5 star read!

Among the three books in this series, this one stands out as the best in terms of story, length, and the dynamic between the leads. The angst and arguments between the main characters, as well as their back-and-forth interactions, are well-balanced. Everything seems to come together seamlessly. I only wish the other two stories were as tightly paced, as they feel overly stretched in comparison.

I'm hoping for a book with Clarissa and Oliver's story, now.
