Twisty twisted!

Another crazy ride from Becca Day! I had to read it after enjoying her debut, The Girl Beyond The Gate.

Best friends Cynthia and Alex are as close as sisters. Two lionesses protecting their cubs. They live on the same farm, raising their familes and navigating life. And then Alex makes a bad decision, her emotions running high, screaming like someone in a horror movie as she does the unthinkable.

I was hooked from the beginning and playing detective alongside Alex and DS Stefani. The feeling of something isn't right, something is off was running high.

Chapters filled with tension and hidden clues, omg moments, toxic family issues, screwing with crime scenes and my suspects changing faster than the channels when the hubs has the remote. A few chapters were a little too detailed, a few eye rolling scenarios, but then she'd throw in another hoop to jump over. I was judging everyone............

Thanks Netgalley for the arc. OUT Oct 26, 2022

Thank you Embla Books and NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. IYKYK, my reviews are always honest.

HONDA CIVIC RELIABE 3 STARS. THIS IS NOT A BAD BOOK. DO NOT BE DISSUADED BY THIS RATING. If you like Shalini Boland or Samantha Hayes, you will most likely vibe with this one.

SYNOPSIS

Alex's son Daniel is accused of murdering his girlfriend, Hannah. Detective Stefani (not to be confused with Gwen Stefani) is in charge of what seems to be an open and shut case. But nothing is what it seems in this sleepy lil town.

MY OPINION

I have NOTHING bad to say about this book; it came and did what it's meant to do. So then why 3 stars? Well, like a Honda Civic, it's solid but it's not an Audi R8. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this to someone for a vacay read or to help them escape a reading slump, but I'm not gonna get on the stand and say this was what Shakespeare could only dream of writing.

I must give the kudos of all kudoses for an author that knows what type of book they want to write and stays the course. I've discussed (more like ranted unprovoked) on here before, but I am willing to put my critical eye aside when I'm presented with an ordinary mom with a normal job who just genuinely loves the crapola outta her kids. I am NOT willing to put my critical eye aside when an author tries to write about a super smart psychologist with the ego of Kanye West ... and the knack for stupid choices as Mr. West.

When an author tries to go for literary masterpiece with poser ass characters and melodramatic writing, you lose me. When an author, like Becca Day did here, goes for enjoyable popcorn read with relatable salt-of-the-earth characters and straightforward writing that matches the straightforward plot, I'm down for it!

Sooo all that to say... this book was going for popcorn thriller/guilty pleasure read and it solidly delivered. No, there's not a lot of depth to the characters, and it is pretty predictable, but it's perfect for a crisp fall afternoon cuddled under a furry throw with a steaming cup of lemon ginger tea. I've read her debut The Girl Beyond the Gate and this is a totally different vibe, but I found this one more enjoyable. The ending was surprisingly NOT OTT and she didn't throw 104904 twists into the last 10% in an attempt to shock the reader—I call these hail mary twists in a last min attempt to leave the reader shooketh and trick them into thinking the book was actually good when it wasn't.

PROS AND CONS

Pros: writing stays the course... doesn't try to be too ambitious, solid popcorn thriller/guilty pleasure read, good pace, quick read, enjoyable lil plot

Cons: nada it just is what it is... Honda Civic Reliable.

Three cheers and five stars for this ultra-compelling, twisty psychological thriller.

The book begins with instant action and the discovery of a dead body.

RECURRING THEMES:
1) What should a mother do when she discovers the dead body of her best friend's daughter, who also happens to be her son's girlfriend?

2) Who killed this popular and beloved young adult?

READERS BEWARE: "All Her Little Lies" is much more than a "Who Dunnit?" thriller.

It's an emotionally pulverizing tale of motherhood, friendship, family dynamics, trust, substance abuse, and mental illness.

The book was fast-paced, intricately plotted, unputdownable, and never missed a beat.

I especially enjoyed the book's strong characterizations, police procedurals, and the way the book unfolded from the day of the murder.

I listened to the full-cast audiobook and all of the narrators did a superb job with the narration.

This is my first Becca Day book and I look forward to listening to future books by this talented author.

*Desperate Acts*

This is the story of best friends Alex and Cynthia. Alex lives and works on her best friend’s farm. All is going well until Cynthia’s 18 year old daughter Hannah goes missing.

Alex’s son Daniel is her boyfriend and as he has a brain injury after suffering a brutal attack all fingers including his mother automatically thinks he knows where she is. He has a habit of taking himself off and camping out in the middle of nowhere often unreachable by mobile to clear his head. The trouble is it coincides with Hannah’s disappearance.

Alex, frantic that she cannot get hold of Daniel goes up to Cynthia’s farmhouse and makes a shocking discovery. She decides to cover up the evidence of what she discovers and it means she has to cover her tracks with lies, how careful was she?

Police detective Stefani Warner starts investigating, her boss worries she is too close to the case as she is known to the families but she is confident she can be objective and professional. Will that decision come back to haunt her?

This situation has driven a wedge between the friends all the time the police believe Alex’s son is the guilty one. Has Alex’s efforts to protect Daniel made things so much worse for him and as more revelations come out Alex barely recognises herself let alone the ones who are closet to her as someone knows what she did and as Stefanie digs she comes up against a boss who wants to nail the boyfriend. She persists and digs deeper.

But Alex’s mind is so scrambled as she realises far too late that she is in danger as she comes face to face with the guilty person

It all seems a bit erratic but the question is how far would we go to protect the ones we love….

The main character wasn’t someone I felt warm towards. She acted on whims and had a hard time managing her emotions. The plot followed the standard pattern, but moving a bit too slow.

Cackling Cats! 😳😯🤯😯

Fluffer doodle! Doodleboppers!I was absolutely enamoured with Day's first debut novel and knew I had to get my paws on her second! And naturally, it has NOT disappointed at all! This was another incredible ride of a thriller Day has concocted. Deliriously delish! The crazy weave of how she did this, causing such suspense and mystery makes you question every character and even when it's revealed she throws another massive twist to bring it up a notch. The ending was so satisfying, yet heart breaking and completely spine-chilling. I will admit I needed definite chocolate reinforcement while reading this tasty novel at times because the tension kept getting more and more intense & I needed sustenance! Day has already become another favourite author of mine in my long list & she keeps proving it with every novel. Get ready for some real sock-twisting & mind shocking revelations and truth with this burner.

Mყ 𝐒ყɴ𝐨ρѕιѕ: Cynthia and Alex have been friends for years, and their teenagers, Hannah & Daniel, have been dating for a while. But all of that is threatened to be torn apart when Hannah goes missing and speculation falls on Daniel. Alex knows her son and he wouldn't have done such a thing, even with his past. What lengths a mother will go to to protect her son and family will be put to the brink when everyone is under scrutiny.

Thank you to NetGalley & Embla Books for this ARC.

I struggled with this “thriller”. From the beginning the premise that all mothers would do anything for their children was problematic for me. At what stage do twists become too many twists? And many of the “answers” were predictable. Finally, there is an increasing trend to include social media extracts in novels but for me they have to have a purpose - move the plot forward, expose facts etc - here they just seemed to be, for no particular reason except perhaps it’s what’s trending.

I really don’t know how this book is rated so high. For me it’s one of those, give it one star because you can’t give it zero times.
I didn’t care about a single character in this book or what happened to them. The relationships between the characters were frustrating and the author tries to drag out some big reveals that were just let downs and predictable.
There’s also too many sexist comments and victim blaming.
Don’t waste your time like I did, there are so many other good thriller/mystery books out there to chose from.

This is a well written thriller about a mom who’ll do anything to protect her son, whom she thinks has killed his girlfriend, the daughter of her best friend. It’s told through the POVs of the boy’s mom, the female detective on the case, and the victim. I guessed most of the twists but that didn’t stop me from enjoying it and binge reading it over a weekend.

I read a digital review copy via NetGalley.

This was disappointing.

At first I thought this story was pretty good but it didn't take long for me to change my mind. I found Alex to be an annoying idiot. If a wrong decision can be made she'll make it. It won't take you long to figure out who killed Hannah no matter how many characters are thrown in the mix.

This book had no less than four red herrings and one of those 'twists' that consists of dumping information on you at the climax that comes out of absolutely nowhere 🤣 None of the characters are particularly likable.

Spoilers below and all that jazz.

Alex is a goddamn moron who makes every wrong choice you possibly could. Feeding the body of a murdered 19 year old and claiming you did it for 'motherly love?' lol fuck off, if it turned out my kid DID murder his girlfriend he's SOL.

Jayce is a freaking groomer/pedophile. What, am I supposed to blame Hannah for that shit? I don't. This man knew her her entire life. He was a grown ass married man when she was in diapers. We all know what this asshole did and how men like this work. Come on now.

Hannah is disgustingly homophobic. Can't really respect a gal who ostracizes her friend because she comes out to her and tells her she's in love. Sure, it's awkward if you happen to be straight, but bullying and excommunicating ain't the answer.

Cynthia's an idiot for the same reasons Alex is.

The ending was infuriating. Cynthia's son (whose name I genuinely can't remember, that's how little he's mentioned) turns out to be a Michael Myers level psychopath. At one point he's knocked unconscious. Alex and Stefani decide rather than...oh, I don't know...using the gads of rope you can FIND ON A FARM to TIE HIM UP...they just. Run off. Into the dark. Leaving him to wake back up and almost kill them later.

No final girl energy here that's for sure.

Anyway yeah no. Dud. Total dud for me. Ugh.

4.5🌟 for a great new author.

A well thought out/planned psychological thriller. Everyone is a suspect and everyone has an opinion on who that me be. Excellent pace, this writer had a plan as tight as Bat Woman’s Lycra! Except she didn’t patch ask holrxstx.

Cynthia and Alex have always been like sisters, until the fateful night that Alex finds Hannah, one of Cynthia’s eighteen-year-old twins, inexplicably murdered in her own home.

As Alex fights to protect him, she starts to uncover disturbing truths. Friendship, family bonds, even her own marriage are not what she thought, and threats seems to come from every direction, both invisible and way too close to home…

First of all I would like to say a huge Thankyou to both @authorbeccaday & @emblabooks for allowing me to read this ARC copy of All Her Little Lies!!

After reading The Girl Beyond The Gate (also from this author) and loving it, I couldn’t wait to get stuck into this one!

This book is a tangled web of murder, lies, deceit and twists!!
One things for sure - when you read a Becca Day book, you know you’re in for a twisty read! 😉
I did have an inkling that I had guessed the plot quite early on in the book and was worried that because of that, it was going to become a very predictable read.
Although part of my guess was right, at the same time, I was also very very wrong! 😵‍💫
I really enjoyed this book & it kept my inner detective hooked & keen to find out what happened next 🤣🕵🏼‍♀️
Another great read from this author.

Keep your eyes peeled later this month for the release date and get this added to your tbr!

All Her Little Lies || Becca Day

All Her Little Lies is a standalone mystery thriller by author, Becca Day. This is the authors second book after her debut, The Girl Behind the Gate. I enjoyed this psychological mystery a lot more than her first book.
The story is told in alternating perspectives, the story follows Alex and Cynthia, mothers whose teenager children are in a relationship. When Cynthia’s daughter, Hannah is found murdered, suspicion immediately falls to Hannah’s boyfriend and son of Alex. Along the way, we are treated to Hannah’s perspective in the lead up to her murder and by the lead Detective on the case, Stefani whose own teenage daughter went to school with the victim.

Part murder mystery, part psychological thriller asking questions about how well we know those closest to us and what we would do for love. This one is a true page-turner and I read it in one sitting. Just when you think you have it all figured out, the author throws another twist or turn.
A fast-paced, chill-inducing psychological ride that you won’t want to put down. Thank you to the author, publisher and Netgalley for an advanced copy of this novel. I am looking forward to reading more by Becca Day

This book is a masterclass in why you should trust absolutely no one. Every character is lying, hiding something or making choices that made me say out loud “be so for real right now” more than once. Its fast and it’s twisty with just enough chaos to keep you glued without going completely off the rails. Some moments felt slightly predictable, but honestly? I didn’t care. The tension and constant deception kept me hooked.

Eh. Seem to have started 2023 with some fairly mediocre thrillers. Couldn't muster the energy even to write a review of two of them, but this one annoyed me enough to say a few words. It's very readable. I enjoyed the author's style. But the plot itself is a mess. First of all, the supposed 'little lie' that kicks the whole thing off is so unbelievable that it almost put me off from the start. No one in their right mind would act that way, particularly not with the body of someone they are meant to care about. Then over the course of the plot that follows, one of the twists is so obvious that I saw it coming from a mile away while the other is so unexpected that there was literally no hint of it in the preceding book. Seriously, thriller writers. Credit your readers with some intelligence. We know what vaguely plausible human behaviour looks like.

A good enough thriller but a couple of errors which bothered me -
Male character has a conversation with his mother on the phone in front of his wife
Few chapters later his wife described how she has only seen him cry at his mothers funeral.

What cop doesn’t have handcuffs if they are going to try to help/stop a crime? Decent enough twists but some of the choices the characters make are just so over the top and unrealistic.

This book was certainly not my cup of tea. Maybe it's because I'm not a parent yet, but the extent in which these mothers went to protect their sons, honestly gave me the ick. It was giving "my identity is boy mom" through and through. I saw Hannah's twin being the murderer, or at least involved in a major way, when the author didn't delve into how the death impacted him apart from saying he was withdrawn. I don't often struggle to get through thrillers, but this is one of the few I did. Maybe it was due to the predictable plot that the author dragged out or perhaps because I felt absolutely no connection to the characters. Additionally, the punctuation and format (at least on the Kindle) made it even more difficult to read. The new paragraphs were barely indented and ' ' were used as quotation marks which made it trickier to follow dialogue throughout the book.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.

2.5 ⭐️

I had initial hope for this story, but it vanished faster than a forgotten New Year's resolution.

The characters didn’t do it for me. Alex, the queen of poor decisions, left me questioning why she didn't call the police when she found Hannah’s body. Such a simple solution but hey, who needs logic when there's a killer on the loose? Apparently not this author. It seems she had a penchant for unnecessary drama. Bravo.

The identity of Hannah's secret lover, the murderer, and the changing family dynamics were as underwhelming as watching a deflating balloon lose air. The story itself felt as flat as a cardboard cutout. It's an easy read, but one I probably wouldn't recommend.

TW:

I'm not used to read thrillers but new year, new me I guess. It's the fifth day of the year and I already finished a thriller and I'm in the middle of one. I find them not to be the top of literature, but I have fun and they allow me to have a bit of escapism (though gruesome at times) when I get to guess who the culprit was, or what's going on in people's fictional lives.

All Her Little Lies, I think, it's a good book if you like me have read few thrillers in your life. The stakes are high, but the plot twists are quite predictable (I guessed a few of them). Other, though, left me speechless, and for sure it allowed me to have a nice Sunday trying to guess the ending. It also tries to show the moral conundrum of being a parent of someone who commits a terrible crime, or at least the main character thinks so. Try is the key word here, but I appreciated the effort.

I would for sure check other books by this author.

I suspected the killer by chapter 7. I was half right… I can’t believe I worked out part of it so quickly! The rest of the investigation not so much, there was a lot I wouldn’t have worked out and it had me on the edge of my seat. Such a page turner, I couldn’t put it down and read the whole book in only half a day.
I was immediately intrigued by the prologue and chapter one, this is my kind of thriller.
Fast paced with multiple POV. Easy to read with simple English, good context and very descriptive.
I love little stand alones like this, they are amazing time fillers. This would be a breath of fresh air to break up a big series or a genre change to pull you out of a slump.
