Caroline Myss was born on December 2, 1952 in Chicago, and grew up with her parents, and two brothers, one elder and one younger, in the Melrose Park, Illinois neighbourhood near Chicago. Caroline was raised a Catholic, and attended the Mother Guerin High School, River Grove, Illinois, run by the Sisters of Providence of Saint Mary-of-the-Woods. She completed her Bachelor of Arts degree in journalism from the Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in Indiana in 1974, and started her career in journalism in Chicago.
In the course of her career, she interviewed Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, M.D., the author of the famous book, On Death and Dying, which inspired her to pursue a Master's degree in theology from Mundelein College, Chicago, which she completed in 1979. She also claims to hold a Ph.D in "intuition and energy medicine", but the degree was granted by Greenwich University, a now-defunct correspondence school that was never accredited to deliver higher education awards by any recognized government accreditation authority.
She started giving medical intuitive readings in 1982 and co-founded a small New Age publishing company, Stillpoint Publishing in Walpole, New Hampshire, where she also worked as an editor in 1983, next she began consulting with holistic doctors, which in 1984, led to her extensive collaboration with Dr. Norman Shealy, an M.D. schooled at Harvard, and the founder of the American Holistic Medical Association, with whom she later co-authored, "Aids: Passageway to Transformation," in 1987, followed by "The Creation of Health: The Emotional, Psychological, and Spiritual Responses that Promote Health and Healing," in 1988. Deriving from her practice as a medical intuitive, she started writing books, in the field of energy medicine, and healing, all of which became New York Times Best Sellers.[18] Starting with Anatomy of the Spirit: The Seven Stages of Power and Healing (1996), which overlapped seven Christian sacraments with seven Hindu chakras and the Kabbalah's Tree of Life to create a map of the human "energy anatomy"; this was followed by Why People Don't Heal and How They Can (1998), which explored the reasons people do not heal through her concept of "woundology." Her next book, Sacred Contracts: Awakening Your Divine Potential (2002) dealt with the issue of finding "Life Purpose," while describing Sacred Contracts as "a set of assignments that our soul had formed around before incarnation". She has since appeared on the The Oprah Winfrey Show numerous times.
By 2000, she discontinued doing private medical intuitive readings, and instead started teaching it, through her workshops, seminars, radio shows and guided tours. She tours internationally as a speaker on spirituality and mysticism, and lives in Oak Park, Illinois, near Chicago. In 2003, she started the Caroline Myss Educational Institute, with Wisdom University in San Francisco.
Her 2007 book, "Entering the Castle" draws upon the writings of Saint Teresa of Ávila, a 16th century Carmelite nun, who wrote her most important work, The Interior Castle, towards the end of her life.
If you are feeling open and you'd like to "wake-up" today - I HIGHLY recommend this audiobook. You can thank Caroline Myss for her insight into the non-material presence in this life and with shining wisdom, bringing it quickly to the material world. This is a wonderful spiritual and scientific lecture series, not to mention a very exciting journey to listen to (even if you never enact her beliefs into your life). It has helped me profoundly with balancing my energy and I did not have to be a mystic to get it. She is a very good teacher.
This audio book is easily listened to in 9 hours, while driving in rush hour traffic on your way to work, but be forewarned that Caroline Myss is not joking around when she embodies the teacher's archetype. What was once a mundane rush hour drive will turn into a vibrant interaction of the energy paradigm. She will teach you and if you are at all a skeptic like I was (esp. about Chakras and unseen mysteries), thinking that you've got the world materialistically figured out, and your reality beat, then you are in for a sharp and exciting surprise. You may find yourself sliding down the rabbit hole of "Who am I? and "Why am I doing this?" and "What is the purpose of my life?" and "Where am I, now?"
These types of awareness-based questions are implied throughout her tales and experiences with anatomy of our body's energy systems. Thankfully, with insight, clarity and precision, Dr. Myss explains exactly what we are made of and it is very reassuring to know that when we do start to ask these questions of a deeper nature, there are guides like Caroline Myss who are brave enough to teach the stuff.
I expected great things from this book, but that is not what I got. There was some information on the author's views of the chakras, and how she thinks they correspond to the tree of life from the qabala, and the seven sacraments of Christianity. Since this audiobook was listed as a Buddhist text, this was disappointing. I understand the urge to synthesize different worldviews, but there was very little focus on the chakras in their original context, and the majority of the book was spent explaining how one might develop through the chakras with a great deal of presupposition of how you would experience it. None of these mirrored my experience in any way. Most of what was here are just assertions from the author with nothing to back them up, and given that, and that little to none of it resonated with me, I can't recommend it in any way.
I don't know much about chakras (which is why I wanted to read this book), but from what I can tell Myss takes great liberties in shaping chakra theories into a too-neat, personal religion of which she is the Pope.
It's a shame that she says some of really offensive things about certain diseases and people who have them because they here's actually some really interesting parts of this book.
Like she does a great job of combining knowledge and practices of Eastern religions with the Judeo-Christian religions but damn there are some tone deaf things said in this book.
I guess it comes with the territory and people probably know what they're in for when they pick up a book about "energy healing". For me though it's disappointing when someone who makes some really good points then goes on to say really upsetting and offensive things about HIV/AIDS and other terminal illnesses.
I wouldn't recommend it to anyone who is in a vulnerable state. You need have a strong stomach to be able to handle hearing some bullsh*t. Just take what resonates and disregard the rest.
There is a lot of good stuff in here about being in the present etc and about the divine. That said I don't agree with much of what Myss says like if we don't fully understand a situation we can't be harmed by it which flies right in the face of children being abducted when they trust. But once again like most self help books a person needs to take it what resonates with them and leave the rest behind
I have listened to this book on audio multiple times. No matter how often I revisit it, I learnn something new. I love that the truth continues to reveal itself through this teaching, as I mature in my spirit walk. I highly recommeend it to anyone on a spiritual journey.
Energy Anatomy ignites a certain fire within. Questions of why and how are very strong. Caroline Myss is a very strong personality and is not shy to share what she believes to be the truth. A great experience. Recommended.
I'm only a few chapters into this audiobook, but I sense that it's going to be one of the most important texts I ever encounter. Already I've had some very profound a-ha moments. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
Love so much of what Caroline Myss says. However, over audiobook, her tone was a bit exhausting by the second half. Granted this was a couple of years ago but I remember her tone was persistently impatient for us to 'get it,' overly didactic and self-important. I prefer when this topic allows people a bit more space for the consumer to come to it.
A certain amount of the tone and attitude is very effective and I respect her a lot. So, the issue for me was the persistence across the 8hrs of listening.
Do I remember incorrectly? Did anyone else find this to be true in the audiobook?
Content-wise, am endlessly fascinated by the metaphors she draws not just between the body and the mind/spirit, but even the population's health and the earth.
I love Caroline's no-nonsense approach to life, learning, and growing. It is a great delight to know that I have the power to heal myself. I am so grateful that I have not put my health in the hands of the medical system. I am glad they are there when I need them but I believe that the system is deeply flawed and in many cases does more harm than good. I have been learning about the power we have to manipulate energy (scientific fact) for some time now and so this book fit right in with everything I am being led to explore.
Disappointing. I wouldn't really call this a book. It was more like a workshop, podcast or rant. The "chapters" leave off mid sentence into the next so you can't skip around. Her terminology was ... questionable. Not wrong necessarily but off putting. At some point she was talking g about having mental abortions and I couldn't go on. I wasn't able to complete the book so take the review for what it's worth. I think overall I really didn't get good vibes. It's hard to explain but the energy was just off.
The first book you should start with in trying to deal with lingering health issues or if you feel you need to retrain your mind in some way because you feel it's sabotaging your life. Note: this book is heavily inspired by the Christian faith and use Christian principles of discussing the connection between heart, spirit, mind and body but even if you're not religious or of a different faith you can still derive crucial lesson from it as I have.
I could have really done without her commentary of epidemics. Those parts are harmful oversimplifications, but I really appreciated the rest of what she had to say. I liked the comparison of the chakras to the Kabbalistic Tree of Life (but she does a poor job stretching the concept to the Sacraments, at least in explanation.)
There was a lot of truth that resonated with me in this audiobook. I also feel like Myss is judgy, and lays things out way too much in black and white terms with no room for nuance. I can tell that I would not get along with her as a person but still like the overall message and appreciate her willingness to be "that guy." This is a tricky subject to discuss without being offensive.
I love this book. I listened to it when I was in my Dark Night of the Soul post divorce 6ish years ago…listening again shined light on a lot of things that I see differently and still need to work on.
I enjoy Myss’ wisdom. She does kind of annoy me at times with her perception of epidemics but that’s just me being judgey so I digress.
Terrible book! I wish I can review it as 0 stars! Nothing real in chakras, a word used only hoping to gain new followers on her own church. Chakras are born on the Indian philosophy and I am sorry but this book is not even closer to them . Absolutely not recommended! Keep your money saved on your pockets!
I can usually find something positive about anything new age but not here. Myss comes across very ugly with strange and cruel stories, and the way she ties cakras to the sociopolitical and diseases is disturbing and shallow, near absolutist despite trying to qualify it otherwise. This was released in 1996 and it was interesting to hear the 30 year old concerns in how she plays to her crowd.
