In my opinion this is a critical time in our nation's history and throughout the world. Not that it has not happened before and won't happen again but when our understanding of who God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit are is changed by political voices and interpretation it is time to go back to the basics.
Rawle uses the 7 I AM statements found in the Gospel of John to paint a clear picture of who Jesus is and why he came. The book relies on scripture to help the reader to fully understand who Jesus is, what he said, and from that who and what we are called to be.
When someone is done with this book I suspect that they will be blessed with a clear understanding of the theme of light and darkness in the Gospel of John. Be aware of Jesus voice and calling. We all contain the capacity to bear fruit or not...the presence of the Holy Spirit is needed to prune what is harmful to growth. Understand how the suffering we all experience in life stems from love. Recognize that our gifts and talents, when offered in parallel with God's will, can nourish and help others. Remember that death is not the end of the story and work toward understanding the many examples of this in scripture.
The book of John is rich in symbolism and imagery. Rawle focuses on this which is refreshing. Each chapter begins with the Scene followed by the Act, then the Play and then ends with the role of the reader, exploring how we fit into the story and how God calls us to participate.
I read this book with our church group during Lent. It was very interesting to participate in discussions chapter by chapter of the variety of ways that Jesus is described in the Bible. The different aspects of Jesus points, oddly enough, to his humanity, in many ways, which may be unexpected for many when reading this book. The author has a series of video clips, for each chapter, which our group watched, and these are very interesting as well. This was very enjoyable.
There are so many studies on the I Am statements of Jesus that I was not sure this would offer anything new. As we started this in my small group we all quickly realized the author had a unique perspective and an accessible writing style. Each chapter led us on a journey and the reflection questions at the end of each chapter offered a good way to begin discussion.
Read for a church Bible study. This book is better written than Rawe’s other studies. Parts were really good. Parts were bird walks that seemed to just be thrown in. I don’t always agree with some of the assumptions Rawle makes - kind of far reaches to draw conclusions. Interesting general ideas. Not a favorite book, however.
