What does a forty-year-old former child star do when she finds out she's a Demon? A sitcom, of course.
Age is just a number unless you're an actress of a certain age trying to make a comeback in La La Land. Back in the day, I was the child star of the hit show Camp Bites. Today, I'm still living it down.
After a disastrous soap opera audition and getting fired from a TV show for not having a bodacious enough backside, one would think I'd be smart enough to go into real estate.
Nope.
Just found out from the rudest, meanest, and hottest guy alive that I'm a Demon. The jerk, also a Demon, goes by the name Abaddon--Abe to his friends.
I call him Dick.
He's come from the Underworld to protect me--insert laugh track--since there's a bounty on my head. Dick is not a welcome addition to my midlife madness. However, he won't go away, and now he's my new boss.
Fine. Whatever. All I ever wanted to do in my life was pretend. I can pretend to get along with Dick. I can pretend that I'm not wildly attracted to him. Not sure I can pretend I'm human anymore, or that a supernatural assassin isn't trying to cancel me, but I'm going to fake it until I make it. Or I get killed.
As the Underworld turns upside down, so have the days of my life.
Robyn writes because the people inside her head won’t leave her alone until she gives them life on paper. Her addictions include shoes (the expensive kind), Coke with extra ice in a styrofoam cup, and bejeweled reading glasses. A former professional actress, she now lives in the south with her family and too many animals to count. Writing gives her a chance to have a job where working in her P.J.’s is acceptable. I think I'm going to have to face the fact that Robyn Peterman's books aren't my cup of tea. I do like authors who write quirky characters and I have enjoyed a few of Peterman's books in the past, but her writing style doesn't make me laugh anymore- this is the second Book 1 of hers that I have been less than thrilled with. My biggest complaint is that ALL of her books overflow with over-the-top, oddball characters, and it's just too much- quirky characters can be charming and fun, but it stops being amusing when EVERY character in the book is extreme in that way. If only she would throw in some "regular" folks to balance out the cast of characters...
Ope. Here I go, I feel the start of a series binge happening with each page read in this book. I honestly feel a little bit in love with the main character. Her personality, her attitude, and her penchant to jump to violent thoughts resonated with and entertained me. Honestly, pretty much the whole cast of characters are fantastic. There is a hint of romance to the plot, with the promise of more to come. You know, if the cliffhanger doesn’t k1ll me first.
❤️ Tropes ❤️ 💋 PNR 💋 slow burn 💋 touch her and ☠️
Cecily was a child star and has managed to not royally screw up her life. But she’s 40 in LA. So ancient by Hollywood standards. As she is sitting in her car after a disastrous day on set, a strange man knocks on her door and tries to tell her she’s a demon. She’s been called worse, and suggests he calls his therapist. But when she gets home her dad verifies his story and mentions that her absentee mother is named Lilith. Cool, cool. Are they collectively losing their minds? But when flaming @ssholes burst in to try and kill her, she reluctantly lets Abbadon (Abe to his friends, Dick to her) try to protect her while she tries to get a sitcom up and going. What’s that line about love and hate again?
Thank you to Hambright PR for the copy, all thoughts are my own.
Cecily is amazing, truly amazing in every way lol Abe is her perfect match I can’t wait for more these two are going to turn everything ass up in the funniest way possible.
I read a set of books a long time ago where two girls found themselves having to make a deal with Hades. I loved those books for how funny and quirky they were. As The Underworld Turns is the first book I’ve read where the vibe matched that and my level of excitement could not be contained.
I listened to this one and the narrator was fantastic, full out with the voices and emphasis and made the experience even better.
Cecily cracked me up. Her situation just keeps spiraling. But hey, she really takes finding out she’s a demon pretty well! 😂 I want to be friends with her! I think she found her match in Abe. So many laugh out loud moments and was perfect for my sense of humor.
I’m looking forward to continuing this series. This whole book was such a vibe. It may be one I need for my shelf!
How do you know that an author enjoys the books she has written? Because you enjoy reading them!
This is true for each of Robyn Peterman's books, whether she tells us that she enjoyed writing it or not.
And she does.
And we do.
This is the first book of her new series, a spinoff of her Good to the Last Death ongoing PWF series.
For those familiar with it, you will see characters that you know and love, albeit maybe a little too shortly. For those who aren't, it's OK, because except for the short appearance of the aforementioned characters, it is a brand-new series, with a brand-new set of characters.
But with the same brand of hilarity and genius that has made Peterman's glory for many years now.
For our enjoyment, especially since, in this new series, she is also sharing some of the past pre-writing experiences, when she was working as an actress. And those scenes are HI-LA-RIOUS!
I saw this as an ad on my kindle and the description made it sound like a hilarious romp through a TV star’s discovery she’s a half-demon. Unfortunately, Peterman relies on crass dialogue and raunchy behavior to create the promised “humor” of this story. I stopped about halfway through, but actually decided to give it a second chance. I’m 2/3 through the book and have decided there are too many books in my TBR pile to waste on this junk.
Oh wow. I wish that went on forever. I was just super sad when I realized I reached the end of our story. As The Underworld Turns is a spin off of the Good To The Last Death series. You don't have to have read that to enjoy this book. But I will say that it will greatly help. Cecily is heading into Midlife and being a badass along her journey there. She is a strong female lead with a strong personality who doesn't give up easily and I adore that about her. She's also pretty hilarious so that helps a lot. If part of Cecily is based off real life, I'm dying to know which parts! She grows stronger and more confident along the way and I'm super excited to see where she goes. Finally we have Abe. The mysterious, big and bad demon. I'm so happy we got to follow him to LA and learn, partly, what he's all about. He was so intriguing in the other series and I love that it's him we got to know. I can't wait to see what the mean Ole demon is all about. One of my favorite parts of Robyn's books is her supporting characters. They aren't just apart of some side plot and barely seen. They are well thought out people with incredible storylines. They always make the stories so much better with their shenanigans. How could you not love someone with the name Man Mom. Uncle Joe is quickly a huge favorite, especially with his back story. That part was emotional but I'm so glad it's there. The friend with many names is a close second. One of my favorite things in here has to be the quotes. I've never highlighted so many things in one book before in my life! From start to finish this was a phenomenal ride! I pray the second book is out, like yesterday.

As the Underworld Turns Good to the Last Demon, Book 1
I Picked Up This Book Because: I've liked other work by the author.
Media Type: Audiobook Source: Hoopla via H Public Library Dates Read: 11/2/23 - 11/6/23 Stars: 4 Narrator(s): Jessica Almasy
The Characters:
Cecely Abaddon a.k.a. Abe a.k.a. Dick
The Story:
When Ceciley finds out she is part demon her whole life turns upside down and is in so much danger. This is a spinoff of the Good to the Last Death Series and I’m so glad I found it. I’ve missed Daisy, Gideon and the crew soi it’s nice to meet some new characters with the same joie de vivre. Having the same narrator also helps keep the same vibes. There are some holes in the story especially around the romance, but I can overlook it.
Loving this spin-off series! Love the new characters and the whole plotline! And how funny!! I haven't laughed so hard at a story since The Facts of Midlife and Candy Varga. And I definitely loved the pop-in with Daisy and Gideon. The book was amazing and I'm on pins and needles waiting for the next one.

Ding, ding, ding! We have another winner here from Robyn Peterman! So much fun here with Cecily & Abaddon. Not to mention Uncle Joe!! You won’t forget Uncle Joe!! Page turning from start to finish. Looking forward to more in this series!
Cecily was hilarious and fun, Abe was hot, brooding and way older than I thought. How would Cecily ever fathom how much of her life was an actual lie that others forced upon her. And Abe, she believes he is a real jerk but, somehow, it turns out he is telling the truth. I meet my Uncle and his mate before I am ready but, it becomes quickly necessary for me to have his help. Oh and apparently I can see, hear and speak to ghosts now and Uncle Joe is still a nudist even in death. Not sure how any of this will save my life from the evil demons who want me dead.
Amazing new series, hilarious as all these by her are! Highly recommend and waiting impatiently for the next one please!
Omg, loved this spin off from Good to the Last Death series so much, loved Cecily et all, loved the story ♥️ D’you know what, I’m not going to write anything else about the book other than it’s amazing. Robyn Peterman is brilliant, I adore her writing, her characters, the way her mind works. If you love pwf/pnr that gives you all the feels in all the ways and has so many laugh aloud moments, read this book. In fact, read any Robyn Peterman books, you’ll thank me, you’re welcome 😘 So looking forward to the next book, as with all her books, I just want to keep reading! 5 plus stars 😁
I absolutely loved this book. Cecily is a great character and her family is simply adorable. So much love between them (I had tears in my eyes when I heard uncle Joe's story. )This book is so much fun to read, I can't wait for the second one. I don't know where Robyn Peterman gets her ideas, but I hope she won't stop to put her ideas in such fantastic books.
This book was over way too soon! I think this will be my favorite series by Robyn so far. Its got the perfect amount of snark, family love, character building, drama and amazing storyline. I read it straight through after getting it a few hours ago. I'm totalled invested! Uncle Joe is my fav! Such a fun loving free spirited hippie! Wish waiting wasn't so annoying!
Nice beginning to a new pwf series. If you are a fan of paranormal and some silly fun then this book is for you. This author writes hilarious books. This one is about a demon that doesn’t know she is a demon. We see some of our favorite people in this book so be prepared to love it more when they show up. Sit down and grab this book. Worth every second of the read.
From inappropriate, gross undead old ladies to inappropriate, gross immortals, to inappropriate ( and kind of gross) old ladies w woo woo juju to now an inappropriate, naked old man ghost and an inappropriate and gross old lady talent agent Robyn Peterman writes the funniest, most lovable inappropriate and gross characters ever!
She puts so much detail into even her supporting characters that all of her books just come alive. This book is no exception.
I absolutely adore Cecily, and I can’t wait to see her character grow.
I laughed through the whole book, and can’t wait to see where the next book takes us.
Lots of laughs. The naked ghost is a favorite. Cecily is starting to look ten years younger as she acquires her demonic powers. Does that veer from the whole midlife criteria? No matter as it doesn’t really alter the storyline. Looking forward to the next book. In the meantime, where can I find some of those gummies?
I LOVED this book so much. I loved Abaddon when he was introduced in the Good to the Last Death series and I'm very excited to keep reading more about him. Cecily is also a fantastic character. I'm looking forward to seeing where her journey leads. As always, Robyn Peterman delivered snark and humor that had me laughing out loud.
I laughed so hard at Cecily and her predicament. I love this story and I can tell that it's going to be another epic series. I cannot wait to see the chaos that's coming up next.
Great start to a new series. Like the new characters & should be a fun read. Love this author's sense of humor!!!! Having her as a neighbor would be a blast!!!
This is possibly my favorite Robyn Peterman book to date, and that is saying a lot. I love Peterman’s zany characters and hilarious plots. This is the first book in a new series about a middle-aged actress who finds out she is part demon. Cecily is a former child star trying to make it in a youth-obsessed profession. After being fired for not having a big enough booty, things start looking up for Cecily. Then she meets Abaddon – Abe to his friends and Dick to Cecily. The UST between Abaddon and Cecily is off the charts. The secondary characters are amazing and add so much enjoyment to the book. Cecily’s family, Man Mom, brother Sean, and ghost nudist Uncle Joe are quirky and loveable. I can’t wait to read what’s next in store for Cecily. I highly recommend this book. I also recommend the audiobook version. The narrator Jessica Almasy did a great job.
As a side note – I did not realize this was a spinoff of Peterman’s Good to the Last Death series, which I haven’t read. This did not impact my enjoyment or ability to follow the story. I am not sure if this will play a role in future books, so I do plan to go back and read that now (not a hardship). If you have not started either series, you might want to start with that one.
I enjoyed the writing and I may look at some of her other books. But I don't plan on following this series. I really despise books that end on cliffhangers and I won't read authors who play that game.
No really sure what this book was lol but I started to actually get interested at like the last 4 chapters which sucked but the ending was making me want to read the second book.. maybe I will
Oh my this book is hilarious Now Robyn Peterman's books are always hilarious but this one was just the funniest book I have ever read!! I laughed so hard I almost peed myself...which wouldn't have been good because I was in bed reading! I know TMI...but this book is hilarious
Good to the Last Demon is a spin-off from the Good to the Last Death series...the star Demon is of course our favourite demon from GttLD series...Abaddon! As he quotes himself "Abe to my friends but you can call me Abaddon"
Robyn takes us on a wild ride through the life of an aging television actress who is finding it hard to get work. She has been through several auditions and nothing seems to work for her...until! Until what you ask well you will just have to read the book to find out...I'm not one to read and tell! Trust me when I say that you have to read this book you won't regret it....you may need to put on Depends underwear because if you have a weak bladder you will need it from all the laughing.
Of course my favourite character is Abaddon. He is just so funny along with all the characters. There is even a surprise visit! Absolutely loved this book and can't wait for the next one in the series!
Was gifted an advanced digital copy of this book from Robyn Peterman for an honest review...and I can't emphasize enough that these are my words and my words only!!
Did I say this book is amazeballs and hilarious!! Well it is!!
Do you have that author or authors that you know are going to provide a particular type of entertainment you look forward to? This author has delivered snarky, in your face humor without fail, and has now reached into midlife characters that highlight all the “joys” that midlife brings to the table! Book one of a new series, our MC finds out later in life that her life is an even hotter mess than she thinks. The tale is spun incorporating Hollywood agents, midlife child stars, a missing parent, demons, and assassins. A major identity crisis ensues, not to mention newfound abilities. Absolutely love how this author is able to insert supernatural characters into realistic life scenarios and not only make it relatable, but outrageously funny at the same time! Really enjoyed this humor break! Notable warnings….meant for mature readers that are not offended by vulgar language, sexual innuendoes, in your face frankness, and/or the use of battery operated gadgets. Last but not least, every great tale should always include a character named Wanda somewhere in the tale. Nuff said. All my reviews are always voluntarily written.
OMG… this kept me in stitches through the entire book. It took me a hot minute to place who Abaddon was. Then it all clicked. I loved him in the series Good to the Last Death and I love him in this series starter. Cecile is freaking hilarious as is her family. One of my favorite parts is this-
“I watched him kill four flaming assholes who wanted me dead.” “ That statement was not politically correct”, Sean said with a wince. Man-mom slapped the back of Sean’s head. I wanted to rack my idiot brother. Instead, I rolled my eyes. “Oh my God. They were not gay-or I have no clue if they were gay. They were literally on fire and they were assholes…and now they’re headless dead assholes.” Sean nodded. “My bad.”
That had me laughing so hard. Lots of parts in this book keep you laughing and it is highly entertaining.
Gideon and Daisy make an appearance and come with a surprise. It is so fun to have characters from another book show up.
This is definitely one book you need to read. Whether you have read the other series or not (which is not really needed, but does bring some insight), this is a non stop ride of laughs. You will be entertained.
"all i'd ever wanted to do my entire life was act, to be someone i wasnt" dnf-> 50% -> 2.5 stars
i have some pretty conflicted thoughts about this book. initially; i'd like to say that this is one of the first audio-books i have listened to in a LONG time.
as for the book itself, reading the synposis--i thought this whole concept of performing arts matched with the underworld and demons would be cool. i'm going to admit, the book didn't deliver this in the way i preferred--there was more 'modern' humor (?) (i didn't really like...) and romance incorporated, alongside the fact that there wasn't as many dark/sinister elements i was looking for. also, i don't like the tone of the characters portrayed in their dialogue. i'm going to admit that i really liked the narrators acting, but i would've liked this book even more if there was less frilly humor and romance, and more action/major conflicts/'darkness'.
I didn’t know what to expect when I started reading this one and I was very happy to find myself laughing so much throughout this book. This is book one is the Good to the Last Demon series. It was such a unique premise and was very funny.
BLURB What does a forty-year-old former child star do when she finds out she’s a Demon? A sitcom, of course.
I have to be honest, the nudist uncle was a bit much for me, but I could see that being a highlight for a lot of others. There wasn’t any spice, but there was lots of adult humor. I enjoyed the narrator Jessica Almasy, she really brought this book to life and highlighted each character so well.
