This book was a really fun read (if you like church history). I learned a lot that I did not know already which is incredibly good. This would be a good book to have discussion over.
This book was written in the 19th century in Russian, translated into English then was reconstructed and put together from a manuscript that was not always preserved fully, so sometimes it is confusing. The Ioseliani jumps occasionally from somthing in 1700 then back to 1609 making it hard to follow at times. It was incredibly well done though.

Something that is interesting about this book however, is Ioseliani's percpective on the Russian Empire. A lot of recent manuscripts and articles do not have a good view of the Russian Empire the treaty of Georgievsk and annexation, but Ioseliani does which is surpirising. It is interesting to read a different perspective on Russia's role in Georgia losing independance and it being a good thing. It makes one wonder if his high view of the Russian Empire is from the effects annexation had on them after this book was written and published.

When I got this book several years ago, I didn't realize it was written in 1866. Not that there aren't plenty of good books that are old, but older history books are often found to be lacking and obsolete eventually. Anyway, I have some unexplainable fascination with the country of Georgia. I've never been, I've never met anyone from there (though I do know someone that's been a few times) yet the place intrigues me. I saw this for sale and decided to pick it up.
There's nothing neutral at all about the writing style and that gets kind of obnoxious after a while. Additionally, the translator has added TONS of footnotes throughout the book and that's really distracting. He's added enough to where it significantly increases the length of the book. There are times where the footnotes take up 95% or more of the page and there are several instances of where there's literally one line of the original author's text and then a whole page of translator's notes. Very distracting.
