Nonna Maria #2

Nonna Maria and the Case of the Stolen Necklace

Rate this book
Nonna Maria, "one of the most charming amateur sleuths ever created" (Tess Gerritsen), sets out to clear her goddaughter's name and uncover the checkered past of an unidentifiable victim in this transporting mystery from #1 New York Times bestselling author Lorenzo Carcaterra.

Nonna Maria has a lot on her plate—and it's not just fresh pasta. Two crimes have rocked the sun-drenched island of Ischia, and once again, the island's denizens have called upon the espresso-brewing, sage counsel-giving sleuth.

A wealthy woman alleges a valuable necklace was stolen from her hotel room. The necklace, she claims, has been in her family for decades. She blames one of the young women working on the cleaning crew as the most likely suspect—a young woman who turns out to be Nonna Maria's goddaughter. She takes the heat, but privately, she proclaims her innocence.

Nearby, the body of a woman found on a curved road near the borough of Barano. The woman is not known to anyone on the island. She has no purse, no identification. The one potential suspect is a young friend of Nonna Maria's who drove by the area that very night and thinks that he may have hit something—a pothole; an animal; or maybe, the woman in question.

It turns out, this woman has a history on the island, having left it decades ago. But why did she return, and more importantly, why did she turn up dead? And what really happened to the missing necklace? Nonna Maria needs to find the answers.

Number-one New York Times bestselling author Lorenzo Carcaterra's highly successful career spans more than 25 years of writing for the diverse fields of fiction, non-fiction, television, and film.

Born and raised in New York's Hell's Kitchen neighborhood, Carcaterra landed his first job in the newspaper business as a copy boy for The New York Daily News in 1976. He worked his way up to entertainment reporter before leaving the paper in 1982, heading for the green pastures of then-Time Inc. and TV-Cable Week, as senior writer. Nine months later, the magazine folded, leaving him unemployed. A four-month stint at People magazine was followed by an odyssey of writing for a string of start-up publications—Picture Week, Entertainment Tonight Magazine, Special Reports Magazine—and freelancing for dozens of others—The New York Times Sunday Magazine, Newsday Sunday Magazine, Family Circle, Ladies Home Journal, and Twilight Zone Magazine among them.

In 1988, Carcaterra turned to television as a Creative Consultant for the syndicated weekly series Cop Talk: Behind the Shield, produced by Grosso-Jacobson Productions. That led to a job as Managing Editor for the CBS weekly series Top Cops, also with Grosso-Jacobson Productions. Running for four seasons, from 1990 to 1994, the show is still in syndication today worldwide. In addition, he worked on a dozen other pilots, one of which––Secret Service (NBC)––made it to air. It was while at Grosso-Jacobson Productions that Carcaterra wrote and published his first two books, A Safe Place and Sleepers.

First published in hardcover in 1993, A Safe Place: The True Story of a Father, a Son, a Murder, attracted widespread critical acclaim, with Newsweek calling it, “unforgettable—a remarkable book.” Currently in its 14th printing, it has been sold to 11 foreign countries and has sold close to 220,000 copies.

The 1995 publication of Sleepers, which was a #1 New York Times bestseller in both hardcover and paperback, catapulted Carcaterra to national attention. Sold to 35 foreign countries and now in its 38th printing in the United States, the book has sales exceeding 1.8 million copies. In 1996, Sleepers was made into a feature film starring Brad Pitt, Robert DeNiro, Dustin Hoffman, Kevin Bacon, Minnie Driver, and Jason Patric. Carcaterra served as co-producer on the project, which was directed by Academy Award winner Barry Levinson. To date, the movie has earned in excess of $500 million worldwide in combined box-office, video, DVD, and TV sales.

Carcaterra made a smooth transition into writing fiction with his first novel, Apaches, a New York Times bestseller in both hardcover and paperback. Published in a 14 foreign countries, the book has sold more than 450,000 copies and been optioned by producer Jerry Bruckheimer.

He followed that with Gangster, published in hardcover in 2001. The book has sold over 375,000 copies since its 2002 release as a Mass Market Paperback. The novel has been optioned by Joe Roth and been sold to 15 foreign countries.

Carcaterra then wrote Street Boys, a World War II saga inspired by an incident which occurred in Naples, Italy, in 1943. Warner Bros. and Bel-Air Entertainment bought the rights to the story in March 2001 before it was written, and developed the project for director Barry Levinson. Carcaterra wrote the screenplay. The paperback was released in July, 2003 and has since sold 150,000 copies.

Carcaterra's next novel Paradise City was published in hardcover by Ballantine in September 2004 with the paperback following a year later. To date, the novel has sold over 100,000 copies and was optioned by Fox Television to be developed as a weekly series.

In 2007, Carcaterra published Chasers, a sequel to his bestseller Apaches. The paperback version was published in the spring of 2008 and movie rights to the story are once again controlled by Jerry Bruckheimer Productions.

With that, Carcaterra took a different turn and has just completed hi

It’s the month of July and tourism season is thriving on the island of Ischia, eighteen miles off the coast of Naples. But two separate crimes create a stir in the community and local law enforcement will have their hands full. Arianna Conte, one of the guests at The Grand Hotel Excelsior, accuses one of the cleaning staff, a local girl, of stealing a valuable necklace. In addition to the case of the the missing necklace, the discovery of the body of the unidentified woman of the side of the curved road in Barano has the carabinieri scrambling to find out who and/or what caused her death.

A lifelong islander in her seventies with a penchant for solving crimes in order to assist those who require her help, Nonna Maria is known for her wisdom, her knowledge of the island and her network of personal contacts. Paolo Murino, the Carabinieri captain trusts and respects her and they often collaborate, Nonna Maria assisting the investigation in an unofficial capacity, of course. Nonna Maria has a personal interest in both cases case because the girl accused of theft is Loretta, her goddaughter and a young man, a friend of Nonna Maria, believes he might be responsible for the accident that caused the death of the unidentified woman. Nonna Maria also suspects that the dead woman might be someone with a personal connection to the island.

With its charming setting, fluid narrative and interesting cast of characters, Nonna Maria and the Case of the Stolen Necklace is an engaging read and a worthy addition to Lorenzo Carcaterra’s Nonna Maria series. Nonna Maria is an endearing character. I had so much fun following her as she went about unraveling the two mysteries on hand. This septuagenarian is smart, perceptive and resourceful and manages to glean more information between sips of wine and cups of strong coffee (that recipe for her special brew is tempting!) faster than the local carabinieri on the job. Her vast network of children, grandchildren, friends and allies from all walks of life is beyond impressive and once again does not fail her as she endeavors to get to the truth behind both incidents that have shocked her community. The mysteries in this series might not strike you as particularly complex (they lean toward the cozy mystery genre), but what draws you in is not just the mystery but the settings and the characters. The vivid imagery and captivating descriptions of the island and the lives of the islanders and their community and the history, traditions and culture truly enrich the narrative and transport you to the island of Ischia. I can't wait for the next installment in this series. I was intrigued by the lead-in for the next story in the final chapter of the book. Though this is the second book in the series, it can be read as a standalone novel, but I would recommend reading the first book too if you enjoy this one.

In this second book in the Nonna Maria series, the shrewd Italian grandmother helps catch two law-breakers: a thief and a murderer. The book works fine as a standalone.

*****

Nonna Maria, who lives on the beautiful Italian island of Ischia, is in her seventies, walks with a slight limp, keeps her thick white hair in a bun, likes espresso coffee and white wine, loves to cook, and dines only at her own table - near a photo of her deceased husband Gabriel. Nonna Maria is always happy to help her friends, who include most of the locals on Ischia.

;

Ischia

Nonna Maria's first concern develops when a fine young man named Federico Castagna confides that he may have hit a pedestrian the night before, on a curvy road shrouded by thick fog. Federico felt a bump and got out of the car, but it was too dark to see anything. Today Federico learned a woman's body was found, and he fears he may have killed her.

Nonna Maria consults Captain Paolo Murino of the carabinieri, who divulges that the dead woman, who's unidentified, was strangled.

This lets Federico off the hook but leaves Nonna Maria with another problem. Nonna Maria thinks she may know the victim, and has an idea about the motive for the crime. So Nonna Maria sets out to 'investigate' via her wide network of friends and acquaintances, which encompasses all of Italy.

Nonna Maria's other problem involves her goddaughter Loretta, who works as a cleaner at the Grand Hotel Excelsior.

A guest at the hotel, Arianna Conte, claims a very valuable necklace was stolen from her room, and she insists Loretta, who attends to Conte's room, took it.

Loretta is suspended from her post while the carabinieri investigate, but Nonna Maria, who's confident her goddaughter is innocent, sets out to resolve the matter herself. It seems no one in the hotel or on the island has seen Conte wearing such a necklace, and Nonna Maria suspects the woman is lying.

As Nonna Maria makes her inquiries she chats with people all around Ischia. Thus we get to meet a variety of residents, including: taxi-van driver Giovanni, who rescues dogs and cats;

restaurateur Gennaro Rossi, a chef who owns the most popular eatery in Ischia;

Il Presidente, a former thug who's become Nonna Maria's friend and protector;

the strega, who tells fortunes for a living;

Federica D'Amato, the medical examiner; and more.

The novel comes to a satisfactory conclusion, with a cliff-hanger that promises a third installment in the series.

The story is enhanced by descriptions of the sights and sounds of Ischia, and depictions of tempting Italian delicacies. Nonna Maria loves to prepare food for her friends, and these treats include panini with breaded chicken, roasted peppers, and broccoli rabe; peppers stuffed with breadcrumbs, anchovies, olives, parsley, and capers; eggplant parmigiana; and more.

Chicken Panini

Stuffed Peppers

Eggplant Parmigiana

I enjoyed the book and look forward to reading more Nonna Maria adventures.

*3.5 stars rounded up. This is a very charming cozy mystery series featuring beloved Nonna Maria, an elderly woman who has lived on the island Ischia, Italy her entire life. Everyone knows her and comes to her for advice and help--even the carabinieri captain, Paolo Murino. As Nonna Maria says, 'I always help my friends. Always.'

In this story, a woman's dead body is found dumped by the side of the road. Her identity is unknown. Why was she on the island and at whose hands did she meet her death? A young man nervously approaches Nonna Maria with his worries...

And at the Grand Hotel Excelsior, a hotel guest accuses Loretta, a member of the cleaning crew, of stealing her priceless heirloom neckless. Loretta is Nonna Maria's goddaughter--she knows the young woman would never do such a thing. How can she prove her innocence and find the real thief?

Who wouldn't want to have someone like Nonna Maria looking out for them? She is wise and intuitive and always has a pot of strong espresso and some homemade cookies ready for visitors. Sit down and enjoy a fun read.

Many thanks to the author and publisher for providing me with an arc of this new mystery via NetGalley. My review is voluntary and the opinions expressed are my own.

This is the second of the Nonna Maria mysteries I have read; it works well as a standalone.

Nonna Maria is a venerable woman whose goal in life seems to be to help and protect her friends and family….and feed them wonderful meals and savory coffee. Through the many contacts made through her years on Ischia, she has an uncanny ability to assist in solving crimes and the captain of the carabinieri is smart enough to rely on her. This time, there are two cases to be solved. A woman accuses a hotel worker of stealing her valuable necklace; the worker just happens to be Nonna Maria’s goddaughter. Another woman is found dead on the side of the street with no identification. It is determined that she has been murdered, but no one knows who she is. Ah! but Nonna Maria thinks she knows her identity.

This is a cozy mystery Italian style with wine and espresso instead of tea. Nonna Maria is enchanting. She is surrounded by unique and equally charming characters. There is humor and pathos in this story.

The book ends with a set up for what seems to be Nonna Maria’s next case; I am looking forward to it!

Nonna Maria and the Case of the Stolen Necklace

Mystery & Thrillers
Rating: 5/5

A big congratulations to Lorenzo Carcaterra on the publication of Nonna Maria and the Case of the Stolen Necklace, his second mystery inspired by his own Nonna Maria and childhood memories of Ischia, a tiny island in Naples Bay. Although I've read both books in the series and thoroughly enjoyed them, each can be read independently.

A woman in her 70s like Nonna Maria isn't your average person. A spry and energetic woman, she enjoys spending time with family and friends, and loves a good cup of espresso. It is well known that she is a wise and perceptive individual. Residents of Ischia often consult her about their lives. There is no one better than Nonna Maria at giving advice on romance and solving crimes.

Ischia is the scene of two separate crimes: the discovery of a dead woman's body on the side of the road and the theft of a prominent woman's valuable necklace from a hotel. Nonna Maria begins investigating both crimes due to personal ties to those involved. Can Nonna Maria unravel these two mysteries before death strikes again in Ischia?

May 2nd marks the release date of this clean and refreshing mystery. It is a very delightful and descriptive piece of writing. Reading the book, you can visualize the characters and the beautiful setting. Nonna Maria, with her sleuthing detective skills, is one of my all-time favorite characters. Her outlook and antics make me smile. This book is highly recommended for older mystery fans. You will enjoy it!

Thank you Lorenzo Carcaterra and Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine, Bantam for the privilege of reviewing this book. When I received my gift copy, I was thrilled. I treasure it dearly!

I am really enjoying this series and am looking forward to the third book. Nonna Maria is one of my favorite characters.

I love older protagonists, and Nonna Maria is a fierce woman to be reckoned with on her own merit. Moreso, she's got the entire island of Ischia available at her fingertips. Whatever she needs or wants, she can easily get from any of the residents because she is so beloved. And she is beloved because she loves all her friends as if they were her family. I want to be in Nonna Maria's good graces too! However, I think she would possibly be a bit annoyed and perplexed to know that I don't drink alcohol or coffee 🤣, but she would love me nonetheless. And like all the citizens there, I would also do anything for her.

This is a charming, lighthearted series with a wise, well-connected, highly respected, and deeply knowledgeable woman at the center of it.

Nonna Maria, an elderly woman living on the island of Ischia off the coast of Naples is always ready to help, and this time it's her god-daughter Loretta who needs assistance. Loretta works in housekeeping in a fancy hotel, and a wealthy tourist has just accused her of stealing a valuable necklace. Nonna Maria calls on her network of friends to help Loretta prove her innocence. When a body found on the island, Nonna Maria is again able to help by bringing to light old secrets that some prefer to keep hidden. I enjoyed Nonna's resolution of the problems presented, but was surprised that the last chapter contained something of a cliffhanger reference to a future book. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC.

NONNA MARIA AND THE CASE OF THE STOLEN NECKLACE by Lorenzo Carcaterra
Publication: May2,2023
By: Random House Publishing Group / Ballantine / Bantam
Page Count: 288

Meet everyone’s favorite grandmother .. Nonna Maria …the most endearing and sage amateur sleuth you’ll ever meet. She’s lived on the island of Ischia her whole life and has an amazing array of friends and relatives …. and connections extending far and wide. Although in her seventies, she’s vibrant, never rides when she can walk. She seems to always have a cup of either espresso or wine in her hand. Everyone on the island calls for her if in trouble. She is known for her wisdom and penchant for solving crimes or mysteries. Often, even Captain Paolo Murino, asks for her wisdom and help in solving mysteries… although strictly in an unofficial basis she has helped in many of his investigations. He certainly trusts and respects Nonna Maria. Ischia lays in the Gulf of Naples, eighteen miles away, and has a vibrant tourist season due to its hot springs and “healing” thermal waters, as well as its five star hotels and restaurants. Like every other summer the, island seems overrun with tourists.
An apparently wealthy woman, Arianna Conte, staying at the five star, Grand Hotel Excelsior,
claims the maid, Loretta (who happens to be Nonna Maria’s goddaughter) has stolen her necklace. A priceless piece that has been in her family for decades. However, no one in the hotel, neighboring restaurants, or streets recall seeing this gem. In part of Loretta’s normal duties on the job, she actually goes into “her rooms’ at least three times a day. Loretta tearfully denies the charges and proclaims her innocence Her boss says he has no choice … until the mystery is solved.. and investigated fully by the carabinieri…. She is not to come back to work!
Even before the dust settles, early in the morning a body of a unidentified woman is found on the side of the road, discarded like a bag of garbage. No purse and no papers of identification. Nonna suspects the woman must have a personal connection to the island. One of her many friends on the island, Alberto, admits that he was working late at the beach and overheard two locals arguing. The sounds do carry quite a bit on a deserted beach. It was like a soap opera! He was so sorry.. and she said he abandoned her and stole her baby. She wanted him to bring the girl and her baby to Naples.
Nonna Maria finds herself deeply involved in both investigations. She will use her far-reaching network of friends and connections to aid in her unassuming investigation into both matters. Who exactly was that woman… why was she on the island … and who killed her and why? Was the necklace actually stolen? It’s a thing go beauty to see Nonna Maria in action, as she digs for answers. Lorenzo Carcaterra weaves an endearing cozy mystery, steeped in the culture and culinary cuisines and traditions of Italy. Nonna is always cooking on her stove … delicious favorite of all. She can’t help herself … always cooking and giving away her delicious foods to extremely thankful recipients. The reader is not only drawn into the mysteries, but also. Becomes enthralled with the settings and the mutli layered characters. This is the second in the series, but can certainly be enjoyed and devoured as a standalone. But now I must go back and read the first, and hope there are more to follow.

I have received this ARC from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

"I always help my friends," she said. "Always."

Nonna Maria and the Case of the Stolen Necklace is the second book in the Nonna Maria series. Just like the first book, I'm completely in love with Nonna Maria, and I have zero regrets about it. She doesn't care for nonsense and only cares about food, wine, family, and occasionally helping a friend out. She's also pretty quick at getting straight to the point and solving little crimes every now and then.

That being said, she handles these two cases like a pro. One, she doesn't believe the maid is guilty of taking a valuable necklace from a resort hotel. Two, she also helps with the hit-and-run of another woman. Long story short, she is damn good and should be on payroll for the police.

Besides the mystery, I'm kind of intrigued with how this one ended. I love a good mystery cliffhanger every now and then. Especially when I have the next book already lined up. I am super excited to see what Nonna Maria will get into next. Oh, and, of course, to see the next mystery she solves. Maybe even see what coffee she makes or wine she drinks along the way.

This is the second book in the Nonna Maria mystery series. Nonna Maria is a no-nonsense elderly Italian lady who feels it's her duty to solve the crimes of her beautiful island home.

When not one but two cases come her way, it's up to Nonna Maria to solve both. The first case involves her goddaughter Loretta, who stands accused of stealing a necklace by a guest of the hotel where she works. The second is the case of the death of an unknown woman found on the roadside.

I enjoyed this mystery with its cozy vibes and descriptions of an idyllic island life on Ischia. I love the idea of a nontypical amateur sleuth that truly cares about the people involved in the crimes she solves. We should all be so lucky to have a Nonna Maria in our lives.

I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are my own.

Nonna Maria is drawn into a murder mystery and a theft case. She is a 70-year-old woman who is wise, lots of connections and a spark of life. She does not deter from taking risks or doing what needs to be done.
This was a just ok read. It did finish fast but did not hold my interest. Both characters and the plot were a bit hollow for me.
Happy Reading!!

This is second of the Nonna Maria series I’ve read. You don’t need to read the first to enjoy this new mystery featuring a wise native resident of a picturesque Italian island. The author’s familiarity with the area gave me wanderlust. He also gives parallel views of both the locals and touristy perspectives.
On the small island of Ischia dark secrets threaten idyllic island life. Nonna Maria is an elderly widow, mother, grandmother and friend to most in her wide network. Many seek her advice and guidance. She’s a woman after my own heart, only drinking strong coffee or wine, who needs water? She cooks mouth-watering cuisine and seems to feed the entire neighborhood. Her network includes everyone from a clergy, mobster, physician, baroness and witch. She will need help from them all as crime surfaces.
There’s an unknown victim left for dead beside the road. Nonna feels compelled to assist in identifying her. Her friend, Captain Murino, a Carabinieri officer, isn’t native to Ischia. He trusts her input. Her goddaughter has been falsely accused of the theft of a priceless heirloom by an elaborate con woman’s scheme. Nonna must use all her years of observation to get her goddaughter out of trouble. Nonna is also piecing together past secrets to obtain justice for the murdered woman.
The story is easy to follow, atmospheric utopia, and Nonna is a character I instantly connected with. I just knew she could help uncover all the secrets, lies and evil resulting in the loss of life. I can hardly wait to see what she does and who she’ll help next!
Thanks so much to NetGalley for the digital advance reader copy of “Nonna Maria and the Case of the Stolen Necklace” by Lorenzo Carcaterra, publisher Penguin Random House, Ballantine, Bantam Books. Nonna Maria is a fixture on the tiny picturesque Italian island of Ischia. Related to many of the island’s inhabitants and a friend to even more, Nonna Maria has many connections and gets embroiled in mysterious crimes that occur on Ischia. In this second story about the titular character, Nonna Maria finds herself investigating a case of a stolen necklace as well as a tragic situation of an unidentified female body found by the side of a winding island road.

Inspired by the author’s own grandmother, Nonna Maria is a meddlesome but endearing character who loves her friends and family deeply. Fueled only on coffee and wine, she dispenses wisdom and Italian cuisine along her quest to help solve the two cases. This cozy mystery is a charming quick read, with short chapters to keep you turning the pages. It ends on a cliffhanger, promising future adventures for this septuagenarian sleuth.

Many thanks to NetGalley and Random House Ballantine Books for providing me an advance copy of this book.

2.5 simple light stars, rounded up
“’You can finish the story another time.’ ‘I’ll rest enough when I’m dead,’ Nonna Maria said. ‘And this is something you need to hear.’”

Nonna Maria and the Case of the Stolen Necklace is an easy-to-follow, light cozy mystery. I liked a few things about Nonna Maria, but some things annoyed me quite a bit. She often described herself as old, being in in her seventies. Nineties yes, eighties maybe, but I hope I don’t constantly talk about my ‘old-woman-ness’ in my seventies. Nonna is quirky – never going to restaurants or a movie. She is uneducated and doesn’t read books or magazines.

Nonna Maria cooks fantastic meals on her fifty-year-old stove and generously shares them with friends and family. When does she have time for this? “No problem, either big or small, can ever be solved on an empty stomach.” The food descriptions are yummy. “When you’re in love, even the bitterest coffee tastes sweet.” The continual talk about wine made me open a bottle. ; - D The best thing about Nonna Maria is that she is a good friend and a good listener.

The style is slow and chatty with much dialog. The author has written for TV, and it shows. I would have liked more insights than passing remarks and endless dialog. Two plot lines – the stolen necklace and a murdered woman keep the pace ambling along. I doubt anyone will be up late at night reading this.

3.5 stars. On the island of Ischia, a woman’s body is found on the side of the road, and a woman’s necklace goes missing from a hotel. Nonna Maria has personal ties to people involved with both crimes and thus sets off to investigate. An old woman with a long history on the island, with a large family and a wide circle of friends, Nonna Maria has her own unique way of helping the people she cares about and will find that she needs their help sometimes, too.

This is the second book in a series but works well on its own. I had not read the first one and didn’t feel like I was missing anything. I enjoyed seeing a glimpse of life in Ischia. Indeed, Carcaterra made the island and its inhabitants feel real, rather than just a list of things someone would learn during a brief visit to the area. He has created an entire community, rich with detail and packed with characters. The only detraction for me was the extra “cozy” writing. The way everyone spoke to each other was just so “nice,” to the point where it seemed unrealistic. I loved the way the action picked up toward the end, and the ending left me wanting more Nonna Maria! Thanks to Random House for the ARC.

Second in a series (“Nonna Maria and the Case of the Missing Bride” was published in 2022), author Carcaterra brings back the elderly know-it-all widow and Italian Miss Marple/Dear Abby, Nonna Maria.

And what an enjoyable tale! Nonna Maria is a superwoman of sorts, but she’s powered by multiple cups/glasses of strong expresso/white wine a day, a long memory, her acute powers of observation, and a true sense of fairness and family ties. She’s in her element on the narrow streets of Ischia, the small Neapolitan island and tourist destination of 65,000. The book is as much a beautiful travelog about the isle as it is a testament to a strong determined woman.

In this novel, at the Grand Hotel Excelsior, Italian tourist Arianna Conte is accusing a maid, Loretta, Nonna Maria’s goddaughter, of stealing an heirloom necklace. Near the same time an unknown woman’ body was abandoned on the road and a young acquaintance of Nonna Maria’s fears he may have struck the victim with his car in the dark. Her involvement: “What I have always tried to do,” Nonna Maria said. “Help my friends when they need me.”

This is a quick and easy read — something to be enjoyed on a summer day. I loved Nonna Maria and I must go read her previous adventure. She needs many more future ones (starting with the clues in the last chapter)! 5 stars for this delightful cozy mystery.

Thank you to Random House, Ballantine/Bantam and NetGalley for an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review!

Nonna Maria and the Case of the Stolen Necklace is the second book in a cozy mystery series set in Italy and one you do not want to miss! This enchanting story is without a doubt, a new favorite of mine and I eagerly look forward to reading more in this series.

Nonna Maria and the Case of the Missing Necklace features an independent, wise, spry grandmother who catches thieves and solves mysteries by knowing everyone in town and asking the right questions. She is full of zest, overflowing in generosity, and survives on her homemade espresso and wine. She delights in feeding the village with sumptuous Italian dishes that will leave your mouth-watering. She is a no-nonsense woman who will go to great lengths to help her friends on her home island of Ishchia.

In this story, we have two cases. We have a woman found dead and abandoned on the road, and the theft of a valuable necklace at the local resort. Since Nonna Maria has ties to both cases, one which is especially close to her heart, she is drawn into the investigation and seems quite adept at calmly solving whatever she’s faced with. This story is charming, absolutely atmospheric, unique and cleverly crafted.

This series is inspired by the author’s own grandmother and his childhood memories growing up on a small island in Naples Bay. It’s a new favorite of mine and a clear comfort read, if murder can be called that! Though it’s the second book in a series, it can easily be read as a standalone and is a considerably quick, engaging read. If you love cozies and are looking for a twist on what’s typical in this genre, this book is for you! I am so grateful I found this series, because it was pure joy to read.

Thank you so much to Random House Publishing/Ballantine for the free copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This turned out to be the second story set on the island of Ischia, as Nonna Maria, in her seventies, works with police Captain Murino to solve not one but two mysteries, one a stolen necklace, and one a murder. But I didn't feel I had missed anything not having read the first.

The author weaves the past as well as the present through snippets from various POVs, with Nonna Maria at the center, helping her friends to solve both crimes. We mostly see Nonna Maria from the outside, her decided likes and dislikes, as the book progresses. Everyone talks to her, is the key to her mystery solving. That, and her ability to see past surfaces, and to make connections between what might seem like coincidence.

I enjoyed the friendship between Nonna Maria and police Captain Murino. Both had respect for each other, and they listened to each other, which was a refreshing change from mysteries that depict old women as fussy and interfering. The reader knows fairly swiftly what's going on with the necklace; the murder takes more time, but while that unravels there are delicious descriptions of food, and a beautifully conveyed sense of life on a Mediterranean island.

This was the first book I had read in this series and absolutely loved it. Definitely a stand-alone; didn't feel I was missing anything from not reading the first book. Also didn't get spoilers for the previous book. I HATE that so much.

Nonna Maria is a grandma and widow who helps solve mysteries. Not because the police can't do it, and not the trope of working behind their backs because the cops are too dumb or lazy. She helps because she has tons of connections. Kind of like an unpaid consulting detective that makes amazing, free meals for everyone while she is at it.

The only thing that bothered me about the book? It takes place in Ischia, a small island of the coast of Italy (not the part that bothers me). The author keeps describing all of these amazing Italian meals that Nonna Maria is cooking. Food that obviously I can't eat but now want. Then, she doesn't even include any recipes. Not that I would ever cook them, even if they were in the book, but still. Making me want food I can't have. Sweet carbs ❤️

I received an eARC of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

I immediately requested this one I read the description--a cozy mystery set on an island off the coast of Naples with an Italian grandmother as the sleuth? Yes, please!

A good cozy mystery has a strong sense of place and a likeable (or, at least, intriguing) cast of characters inhabiting that place; Lorenzo Carcaterra delivers both here, and it was gratifying to read how well Nonna Maria knows all of the townsfolk of Ischia--in addition to some notable characters who live further away. Personally, I'm also a fan of cozy mysteries with delectable descriptions of food, and Nonna Maria makes plenty of mouthwatering dishes for everyone (but somehow subsists on wine and coffee; no one, including the reader, sees her eat throughout the whole book). The mysteries (yes, there are two) wrap up neatly--perhaps, one might complain, too neatly--but there's a sharp cliffhanger in the last chapter that teases the next book in the series.

I mistakenly didn't realize that this is the second book in the series, but it works well as a standalone. Guess I'll have to go back and read the first one now!

Nonna Maria is pledged to help her friends, but once, long ago, she failed to do so. When her young friend Fernanda fell in love with a married man and left the island of Ischia, and Nonna Maria let her go. Now the murdered body of an unknown woman is found on a lonely road, and Nonna Maria suspects it may be Fernanda's. At the same time, a guest at one of the five-star hotels claims that her necklace is stolen, and accuses the chambermaid of being the culprit. But the chambermaid is Nonna Maria's godchild, and she's sure that the girl is innocent. It seems more likely that the hotel guest is a con woman who is trying to commit an insurance fraud. Neither of these situations is acceptable, and Nonna Maria pulls together her friends and relations to thwart the bad guys.

Book two in the Nonna Maria cozy mystery series is easily read as a standalone. A necklace goes missing from an upscale hotel and Nonna Maria's niece has been named as the only suspect in its theft. Nonna is certain of her niece's innocence and sets out to prove it.
Nonna is certainly an eccentric elderly woman. Living alone as a widow, she nonetheless has a large amount of family, friends, and contacts everywhere in Italy that she reaches out to when necessary to solve a crime. In this outing not only is a necklace missing, but seemingly unrelated, a body of a middle aged woman is found. Nonna proves neither doddering in her old age or overly saccharine which is refreshing. Though completely uneducated by school standards, her quick wit and thorough understanding of human nature are sufficient enough for most of the town to include the local police, to count of Nonna to help with all the cases that come to the sweet vacation island of Ischia.

Thank you to Ballatine/Bantam Books for an early e-copy. All opinions are my own.

Thanks Netgalley for allowing me to read this book. Nonna is asked to use her expertise to assist with two investigations. One is a mur, and the second is a valuable piece of jewelry. The cases appear to be separate, but the more Nonna digs the more they appear to be related. I liked the storyline.

3-3.5 stars. This cozy mystery takes place on an island off the coast of Italy. The author, with his descriptions of the scenery and the food, certainly succeeded in making me want to go there! I thought the characters and the plot were less well done, however, and I didn't find them compelling or wholly believable.

Thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for a free e-ARC of this book.

Nonna Maria always helps her friends. She imparts the wisdom of her years to readers as well. These books are wonderfully charming, beautifully written, and so fun to read.

Another easy and delightful cozy mystery in this series. Not particularly complicated but chock full of charming Italian characters and a little bit of sleuthing. Our cheeky septuagenarian matriarch guides her family and community and gifts the reader with humorous and smart moves without being cliche. It’s just a fun, fast, and satisfying time spent reading.

Nonna Maria is one of the most engaging characters I have been introduced to in many years. The author has created a vibrant personality that has the perfect combination of head, heart, and street savvy.

I love following her through the streets of her village and her encounters with her many friends. Perhaps the most enjoyable feature of the books for me is, not the mystery, but wondering what sensational culinary treats she is going to serve up for her friends ( it is her “ currency” to elicit confidences). I wish I was on her distribution list. . . Even if it was just for a thermos of her super-strong espresso.

This was my second encounter with Nonna Maria, and I hope there will be many more in the future.

I want a Nonna Maria in my life! This is book two in a new series by Lorenzo Carcaterra. I have not read book one but if you are like me and new to this author and series you will find that the book stands alone well. From page one I was hooked. Lorenzo Carcaterra's writing style transports you to this Italian island and the characters are so well-written that you want to meet them off the written page. I also love his not-too-long chapters. I read a lot between doing other things and I like finishing a chapter before having to put my story down.
Let me tell you a bit about Nonna Maria and why I think we would all benefit from having someone like her in our lives. Nonna Maria is in her 70s, a widow with a large family and friends. To say she is well-connected in my opinion is an understatement. This woman has connections not only on her island Ischai but throughout Italy and possibly farther. I am sure that the FBI or CIA would be jealous. She is also very loyal to her family, but her family consists of more than just bloodlines. In this book the mystery has two storylines, One is her goddaughter accused of stealing a necklace. Number two is a dead body found at the side of the road. Nonna Maria works her magic and these two mysteries and more are solved.
At the end of the story, there is a little cliffhanger, which I hope is a lead into the next in this wonderful series.
Thank you Netgalley, Bantam, and Lorenzo Carcaterra for the ARC. I enjoyed this book very much and will be looking for the first in the series. This is my honest review.
