Corrupt Kingdom #1

Savage Prince

Rate this book
My first love. My worst enemy. My husband.

Aiden O’Reilly is a monster in a tailored suit. A beautiful villain who ruthlessly crushes his enemies. And my father made the mistake of crossing him.

Now I’m being forced into an arranged marriage with the man who once stole my heart and broke it.

But even though I have to wear his ring and share his bed, I vow not to let myself fall for him again.

It doesn’t matter that his touch inflames a dark desire inside me that craves only him.

It doesn’t matter that memories of the past keep infecting our present.

It doesn’t matter that he looks at me as if no other woman exists for him.

Because only a fool would fall in love with the devil twice.

Savage Prince is book one in the Corrupt Kingdom series. It's a first love, second chance standalone mafia romance with dark themes and high steam. Although it’s part of an interconnected series, this book ends in a HEA.

I loved the premise of the two main love interests being friends then dating then enemies then blackmailed fiancés then lovers. It had a lot of potential to have a lot of animosity and then groveling and I feel like it just didn’t land. I wanted the FMC to be a lot angrier and resentful of her situation and she just kinda went with it. I know she was doing it for her dad, but she just rolled over on most things. After how she was treated when they were in high school and how he treated them after they reunited, she barely even put up a fuss. Hell, she didn’t even ask why he was doing what he was doing. Not once did she ask why he wanted to ruin her and kill her father. I feel like that’s something I would’ve wanted to know if I were her!

Once they started having sex, the plot went out the window. I found myself skipping sex scenes not because they were bad, but because I just wasn’t interested in that. I wanted more plot. And there would only be a few pages of story between scenes. It got slow and boring. The plot was underdeveloped and could’ve been a lot better.

The FMC was literally only concerned with the MMC. The MMC had other things going on in his life like the mafia and his brothers and his mom, but the FMC was barely concerned about her father or a job or anything. All her inner monologue was about him.

I feel like this book had so much potential. I was sucked in by a blurb about her choosing a crimson wedding dress to spite him and I made some conclusions about what kind of FMC she would be, and it did not deliver unfortunately.

this book was fine. I think I would have liked it if Rose gave in a little less willingly. For someone who claimed to hate Aiden, she was all too willing to be his wife. Also the Irish mob is hard to get behind, I like Italian and Russian mobs better (see 365 for context). Also, these books need to stop throwing around the subject of domestic abuse so freely. What was happening to Willow was INSANE and no one was going to do anything about it until Dimitri kidnapped Rose, oh that was too far??? Lastly, why does every one of these books need a kidnapping. In almost every book I read nowadays it ends with the main love interest (always the female on too) being kidnapped by the bad guys and the man storms in with a gun. Don't get me wrong, I love the masculine trope Winters is going for here, but I'm bored. It is too much of all of the same stuff. I will probably read the rest of the series, but begrudgingly.

Look, I’m willing to admit that maybe this one just wasn’t meant for me. But there’s maybe one scene in the whole book that stood out. I really wanted to love this, especially considering how much I loved The Sweetest Oblivion, but honestly most of this felt like filler, even when it wasn’t supposed to. I had high hopes for this one, but I definitely struck out

⭐️⭐️.5/5 🌶🌶🌶/5

TW - death of a parent (recounted and on page), violence, substance abuse, plot spoiler:

Tropes - arranged marriage, mafia, second chance, friends to enemies to lovers, dark(ish), forced proximity, possessive MMC, erotica

This book had potential and it could not follow through imo.

I am, what some might call, a ✨smut enthusiast✨ but I can't even vouch for this book. If I had gone into this knowing it was just erotica, I would have had different expectations and this rating probably would've been higher.

The plot was not compelling, the FMC had nothing going on in her life apart from the MMC; all of her internal monologue is mostly about him, nothing else. Literally, nothing.

The MMC had some stuff going on, mostly mafia stuff but I would even call this book mafia, I would say that it's more organised crime than anything.

The smut was good, don't get me wrong, but if every single chapter is gonna be them fucking while we pretend that this book has a plot, then make it a novella. This book is 402 pages long. If it was half the length, it would've been good. You can't have them fucking in nearly every chapter if it's just gonna be the same shit different day while we pretend that something important is happening in the background 🤷🏽‍♀️.

Scale:
⭐️ - would've DNF'ed / continued out of spite
⭐️⭐️ - shit, but whatever
⭐️⭐️⭐️ - meh, could've been better
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - lit 👅
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - loved it, inject this shit into my veins 🤪

🫑 - no smut
🌶 - no point
🌶🌶 - mediocre at best
🌶🌶🌶 - standard smut, hot
🌶🌶🌶🌶 - 🥵 okay, some CW
🌶🌶🌶🌶🌶 - fuck me 🥵🥵 CWs / filthy with a side of filth - see Poison / Room Twenty-Two: Hide and Seek

⚠️ spoiler warning ⚠️

💭 so is there a limit to how much spice a book can have without it just being repetitive and boring? yes, yes there is and this book was it.

💭 Savage Prince actually had a fairly interesting plot, but this book just didn't deliver it to its fullest potential, unfortunately. It was both very rushed but also far too long in it's delivery. Perhaps if at least 5 spicy scenes were cut and plot was actually written, it would have felt worth it.

💭 Yes, I understand this book is a romance; however, even romance books need to have more than two characters sleeping with each over every second page. Once the FMC and MMC started sleeping together, absolutely nothing happened for so long. I skipped many pages because the sex was just too repetitive.

💭 For two characters who seemingly hate one another, it sure did not seem like it. I would have liked more development on this angst but they both just dropped their issues with one another after they saw each other naked. He did a shitty thing to her (no matter how the author justified it), and he hated her family for a murder. Also Rose never even questioned Aidan why his family hated her father/her family so much? Wouldn't this be the first thing you do when the man you're being forced to marry suddenly has a soft spot for you? Idk, I'd like to know.

💭 I kept reading because I wanted to see who actually murdered the dad, and what happened in that respect. But honestly, wasn't worth it!

Solid 3 stars for this book. It was good but nothing to really rave about. I like that it wasn't a typical arranged marriage romance the characters did have a unique backstory where they went to school together and had a past relationship and you know things happened obviously so that was really interesting and the side characters their brothers were really interesting. So overall I did enjoy it.

Even though arranged marriage is the main trope of this book, it did not give those vibes. I think they only disliked each other for a second and then just forgave each other. I didn’t feel any chemistry, maybe because all they did is have sex. In the beginning it was fine, but at some point I just wanted them to talk to each with their clothes on them. After the truth came out about the murder of their father, I felt as if the story was finished. The whole Dimitri plot line was boring and quick. Also I hated how they planned on marrying Willow with Connor even though they knew her marriage.

Rose and Aiden

The story was a mix between enemies to lovers/2nd chance love and arranged marriage. The only part I didn't care for is how easily rose gave in. I think she should have made him grovel! Excited to read Connors story!

I liked the premise because I love a good enemies-to-lovers and arranged marriage trope but it fell flat after the first 20 pages :(

I had to skip most of the book because they were going 'crazy' after every 3 pages...

I also read this in pdf form so I didn't even realise this was the cover, I'm scared.

They do not love eachother. Maybe with the idea of eachother from before (would’ve loved insight on that) but they literally just use eachother as sexual vices. Premise had potential but wasn’t executed well. The book was 95% smut. Willlow seems like a much more intriguing heroine than Rose (dumb girl)

2/5 (generous but I didn’t see some twits happening)

Reading commentary:

The names of the places & the syndicates are very childsplay
The detailed sexual fantasies are too much like relax pls
Is she a dream teller or something? How the flip does she know what type of dreams he’s exactly having? Be fr
The chapters end too quickly it ruins tue flow ibr
I was so excited for the jealous scene between Noah & Aiden but it fell so flat. He just picked her up & left ?!?!
Ew he hung the sheet up what Italian traditionalist bs is that yuck 🤢 he’s not even Italian
Naaaa is she acc gna wear a red dress pls no
He’s acc a hypocrite. He has a problem with Dimitri ‘breaking’ Willow but wants to do the same with Rose?? Stfu
Aiden & Rose are like sex magnets 🧲
Willow & Dimitri seem to have a way more interesting story than these two
Oh gosh … I assumed he humiliated her bc of their family but bc of Dimitri ?! That was quite an unexpected turn ahaha
He wanted her safe but ruined her reputation puh-lease
Rose is delusional. Good sex must BLIND you
Thank God she didn’t wear the flippin red dress
Why the flip did she go get pregnant for ffs what a cliche WRAP IT UP
The actual mafia business plot is so dead
How has he fallen in love with her when he’s had one conversation with the her the whole time she’s been back? Fallen into pussy maybe 🐱
Bruv now a car crash ?! Can she just not cry in her room
They’re both toooo young to have this baby idc
Omd I had a feeling there was something wrong with necklace like poison but a camera .. yikes. A lot of NSFW content on that ..
Aiden & co are a bit dumb for not guessing that Dimitri would want some revenge smh
What the flip now she’s kidnapped?! Fs I thought he had security

“You’ll always be mine. There was never a moment when you weren’t. My jaw clenches, and although I don’t say the words, they echo in my mind.”

This book went on for a bit too long. There is absolutely no plot other than the main characters having sex every chapter. Don’t get me wrong I don’t mind that but when you are just getting bored because there is no plot only sex then that is saying something. Nothing happens until the last 20% of the book and the. Even the epilogue is just more sex.

I really just wanted to skim over it but realised there wouldn’t be any book left.

Also our FMC was a little bit on the pathetic side. The “hate” went right out the window when she got had org@sm. Yeah yeah he was your first love and did something truly horrible but let’s just forget about that when he bails you up and touches you. Blah! Have some self respect.

This book was recommended to be when I was looking for a strong FMC. Epic fail!

so much potential but just….flop. the plot kinda just faded after a certain point and the way the fmc just rolled with everything didn’t sit well with me. literally went from “i hate him so much” to “you did it to save me” in 0.5 seconds, no groveling whatsoever. i actually just DNF this book halfway through bc i could tell what route it was going and ended up just looking it up to see how the fmc handled everything. EXTREMELY DISAPPOINTING.

DNF at 63%

I was forcing myself to try and finish this one and then I realized I don’t HAVE to read it. The writing wasn’t horrible but the relationship was very surface level. I didn’t feel as if the two main characters had any chemistry whatsoever and the rest of the characters weren’t giving off any “mafia” vibes either. The plot was intriguing but the execution fell flat.

3.5/5. Honestly, I would’ve liked this more had there not been these plot holes that were impossible to ignore.

1. This awful thing that Aiden did to Rose when they were in HS, is eventually explained and yay he’s a hero, but he easily could’ve repaired their relationship after the fact? Why not just tell her why he did it? Why not eventually go after her? He claims to have loved her but like…why didn’t he try to fix it? He says he was a stupid kid and that reeks of a cop out.

2. The whole thing with Aidens dad was so obviously a setup. Not really a plot hole but like…these are big bad mafia men. They should’ve known.

3. Everything with Willow was nauseating. These men all just threw her under the bus and didn’t give it a second thought. They knew Dmitri would likely kill her for divulging what she did, and yet did or said nothing.

4. Killing Dmitri was so obviously justified. They built it up to be this big bad thing because the Assembly didn’t take their side, but then Dmitri immediately goes off and drugs and kidnaps one of their wives. How would that not have been justified? It isn’t even mentioned to them after the fact? HOW. WHY. Are womens lives valued so little. I couldn’t wrap my head around this. He was literally going to kill her.

All that being said, I still enjoyed it🥴 Give me second chance romance in any context and I’ll likely enjoy it, but mixed with mafia and I was sold. The romance was interesting and thank god for the lack of ow drama. I was expecting it and was so pleasantly surprised that it was never an issue. The spice was top tier. I’d say this is one of the most smut heavy mafia books I’ve ever read, at least of this length and caliber. I’m a quality over quantity type of gal, but you get the best of both worlds with this one. There are A LOT of scenes, but they’re all very extensive, very detailed, they’re not all carbon copies of the previous scene, so you stay interested, and the dirty talk was…perfect🙏🏻 I will be reading the next installment.

Quite a few twists and turns

Although the story is set in the present day, our two main characters didn’t just meet. Aiden and Rose have known each other since high school where they became each other’s firsts; first loves, first lovers, first heartbreaks and betrayals. Being that they are both in families heavily involved the mafia, they both understand what’s at stake years later when Rose is forced to marry Aiden. As much as they try to fight the attraction that never went away even after such brutal betrayals, they can’t. But the real question is, is their love strong enough to get to the bottom of the betrayals and allow them to heal before the floor gets ripped from under then with additional threats looming close by?

Overall, I wasn’t impressed. There were more times than not that I wanted to let the story go because it was just dragging. It felt like there was more focused placed on the spicy scenes than anything within the actual plot to be honest. The “I don’t want to want you but I DO!” Got old really quick when that’s ALL THERE WAS for pages upon pages. We would get hints of other things going on, but nothing would come from it. The whole thing sadly seemed very under developed. You can get all you need by just reading the last half to third of the book. I want to give the series another shot with book #2, but I honestly don’t know if I will…

I didn’t know I was in for a ride when I first saw this book on TikTok and honestly I loved it but at the same time there were things in this book that I probably wanted differently! But Aiden and Rose made me fall in love with them and since I’m a sucker for mafia and at the same time a sucker for arranged marriage this was kind of chef’s kiss for me!! I just wished aiden was the one that was the boss, I love Lachlan and all the brothers don’t get me wrong but I’m so used to reading the mmc being a boss that it was kind of strange at first reading that aiden was the second oldest brother or better yet second in command! But I love the second chance plus arranged marriage and how they really came around to being together again! What gave me give it only 4 stars is that the epilogue was kind of small and it was only spice which I loved every second of it don’t get me wrong but I would’ve wanted something else for them then spice and the second epilogue is like a small prologue to the next standalone in the series so although I like that we get insight to see if it sparks the curiosity to read the next book, I wished it was still about aiden and rose but overall I loved it and would still recommend it!

Okay, I kind of love this story.

I listened to it on audio during a road trip and despite figuring out who the bad guy was and having an inkling of what he'd done pretty much from the second he was introduced, I still really enjoyed it. The only thing I'm still confused about is why Aidan felt the need to stay away from her after hanging up the sheet.

I understand wanting to save her and feeling like that was the only way, but if the bastard lost interest in her as soon as she wasn't a virgin anymore, why did it matter if you were still together? That's probably the big question that's going to haunt me with this book. I was also surprised that the guys were stupid enough to fall for thinking the wrong guy murdered their father when it was so sloppily done. Do you really think a mafia boss will put a body in the back alley behind his bar AND botch the burn job? Like come on, use your brains.

Overall, romance is A++. Chemistry is A++. Story is A+++. Answering questions that you'll have readers asking? C.

I already have the second book queued up to listen to on the drive back next week and am super excited to dive in because I love Connor and Willow already from this book.

This book had a lot of potential. There was so much that could’ve been that didn’t happen like I wouldn’t have been so complacent about the whole marriage situation and fought against it. But Rose just went along instead of showing real anger and she didn’t ask at all why Aiden was doing this and why he hurt her in the past before getting into the marriage.

I’m a sucker for grovelling and when they make up but I personally felt there wasn’t much to it there. And then they just have so much sex and I love reading spice but it was more sex than plot. Her job went out the window, her father disappeared and it was just more about Aiden than her life too. There was no balance.

I genuinely felt bad for Willow and I wish they did more to help her or take her in once she told them the truth but they left her to it and I wasn’t expecting that, especially from Rose.

It wasn’t completely boring and I did get through it but I usually finish books in a day so it took me a while to continue it. But I hope Connor and Willow’s story will be much better paced seeing how much she went through.

This book was something I saw on Spicy BookTok. I had high hopes based on that video and the blurb for the book. It wasn't a bad book if you were new to this genre and don't mind the lack of plot.

This book sets up for an intense lovers to enemies to lovers story. But as you get into the story you realize the plot is meaningless because the FL cares about nothing else but the ML even though she has a complicated family, a full life without the ML, and career goals. But once she returns all of that apparently doesn't matter and she turns into this submissive women with very little thought other than the ML.

The ML, as well, has a complicated life, family, and relationship with people. Then as soon as the FL is reintroduced these things become lukewarm to the ML until it become necessary to remind the reader there is supposed to be some sort of plot.

The story as whole gives off more of a male fantasy story, in my opinion, than one necessarily for women.

Aiden and Rose

So if you want a smut book here is your book. I actually thought in the beginning it was going to be a great mafia romance. But you read and read and read and it is just page after page of what was supposed to be spice. It was too much, there is a killer among them and they are in their home and car, and anywhere else just going at it. No real completion, no HEA nothing that tied the story together she didn’t call her dad they didn’t apologize. Nope just went into the next story about willow and Conner. I dont think I have ever skimmed spice but I did. Just not a author for me.
