Fasting & Feasting: 40 Devotions to Satisfy the Hungry Heart

Rate this book
Does your relationship with food come as a constant source of regret, frustration, and shame? Or does it feel like a God-given blessing? Do you bounce between the two sometimes, in a love/hate relationship with food?

Whether it’s a warm croissant, a bright bowl of fruit, a piece of cake, or a steaming cup of coffee put in front of her, author and Bible teacher Erin Davis has experienced all sorts of complicated responses to food, too. She's discovered that God’s Word celebrates food as a gift while simultaneously inviting us to surrender every area of our lives— including what we put on our plates. Rather than the yo-yo of loving food versus hating it, Erin invites you to accept Scripture’s invitation into a different, nourishing, and refreshing rhythm.

In this 40-day devotional filled with heartfelt reflections on key passages of Scripture (and a few inspirational stories thrown in for good measure!), you’ll learn just how satisfying it is to join in the biblical rhythms of fasting and feasting.

A few raised eyebrows and eye squints aside, I mostly appreciated this devotional. I am torn on my rating because there were devotions I really loved that were pointed and fresh. The overall folksy tone was not my favorite, but that’s just a personal preference. I do take issue with Day One in which she centers the whole devotion on a minority reading (basically ignoring foundational tenants of textual criticism). I am wary of authors who pick specific translations or variant readings solely because they fit in with the point they’re hoping to make.

Aesthetically, it’s a beautiful little book. The cover is very well done, and the overall layout is excellent. I love the alternating pattern of devotions focusing on themes of fasting and feasting. There are moments of beauty and eloquence, but I wouldn’t say these characterize the book as a whole. 7/10

When this book was selected for my women's book club, I admit it....I was nervous. The mere idea of fasting made me uncomfortable .... and hungry. Erin's book was so easy to read, non-judgmental and has some great stories. As I read further, it made me understand fasting, the need for it and the power and it made me want to explore it. I can truly say that this is a book that has changed my life as, I now incorporate Spiritual Fasting into my life on a regular basis and enjoy it so much. Thank you Erin!

Erin Davis is a gifted writer and Bible teacher. In Fasting and Feasting she deals with the topic of food, asking the question “Does your relationship with food come as a constant course of regret, frustration, and shame, or does it feel like a God-given blessing. These devotions use the Scripture to point us toward a right relationship with food and to see that only Jesus can truly satisfy.

I received a copy of this book from Net Galley. The opinions are my own.

A terribly challenging devotional! That's a good thing!! I will be reading this again, more slowly, because it's so good. There was a thing or two that I may not have totally agreed with, but they were very rare, and it's basically difference of opinion. I mean, who agrees completely with anyone else, right? Overall, its a wonderful book!!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the advance e-copy of this book. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.

LOVED this. A really interesting devotional, especially if you have any issues surrounding food and eating. Each day alternates between feasting and fasting and gives a section to fill in for yourself about things you are dealing with or need to deal with. Never come across anything similar to this, going to get it as a gift for a friend who struggles a bit with food. I also absolutely LOVE the author, Erin Davis ❤

This book is a gem. It has transformed my thinking & perspective on food to the glory of God. It has explained the experience of fasting Christianly & what it points to (leaning on & trusting in Him). An excellent, excellent book that goes far deeper than you might expect. Brilliant! Would thoroughly recommend.

The book is designed to rotate between days of fasting and days of feasting. Each day offers a chance to “set the table” and reflect as well as “invite the feast” and pray. Erin Davis does an excellent job mixing real life experiences and struggles with Biblical examples. This book is loaded with scripture in a way that weaker devotionals often lack. This book shows us Biblical feasts and Biblical fasts and teaches us how to prayerfully make both a part of our lives. I loved it. I received a free advanced copy of this book from NetGalley.
