Stay Grounded #1

It Will Come Back

Rate this book
Trevor:
At thirty-eight years old, you’d think I’d know what I want in life. Prior to being shot, I’d tell you I did. Sure, the picture didn’t include a spouse, or even my own family, but it did include my dream job of Detective in the Orlando Police Department, and enough intimacy to keep me going.

That bullet tore through more than my shoulder that day. It sent me down a romantic path that’s turned into a freefall.

My newfound desire for someone to come home to has put dents in my already damaged heart that make me crave the way things used to be. The occasional fling, and days filled with fixing everyone else’s problems in this city but my own.

But even that plan falters when I enter the Stay Grounded coffee shop and meet Irish-born owner Alex O’Reilly. Our conversation goes down as smoothly as the coffee, and I find myself crave the very thing I swore I was done with. After a strange break-in at Stay Grounded stops us in our tracks I’m faced with how far under I’ve fallen, and how good it felt to come up for a fresh breath of air with someone as unique as Alex.

And that, is just as terrifying as the escalation this criminal seems hell-bent on.

Keeping Alex and his business safe is my job.

Keeping his heart safe? That’s not something I’m sure I’m fit for anymore.

BH Lynn is a new to me author. I really enjoyed the story and getting to know Trevor and Alex. The beginning of the story with Trevor’s pain felt realistic. Meeting Alex was like waking up from a dream for him. They were the perfect grumpy/sunshine! There’s a great mystery involved within the storyline. The only thing I didn’t like was I felt Trevor was too wishy washy. Thankfully he had a fantastic work partner to wake him up! Great secondary characters. Overall, loved it. I felt it was well written with nice pacing! Definitely recommend.

This has a bit of a detective noir feel in the beginning which had me hooked, as Trevor spirals into self-pity and his pain. You can perceive how alone he feels. The only thing keeping him going is his job. A job that is far from 9 to 5 and one that has him witnessing some of the worst life has to offer.

When he meets Alex the Irish coffee shop owner, he feels a connection that makes him as scared as it does excited. He refuses to believe that Alex could love him with his baggage and job, but thanks to a criminal who seems to have it out for Alex the Detective can’t stay away from the gorgeous man.

This is a novella, so it was set over a short period of time, but it didn’t feel rushed or lacking. It had everything it needed, character development, back story, interesting storyline, and two gorgeous men finding their happy ending.

All in all, I really enjoyed this. 4.5 stars

I did not know the author B.H. Lynn before. I really liked both the pleasant writing style and the love story combined with a mystery.
At the beginning you get to know Trevor and you can feel his pain, which was described very authentically, directly - I was already in the middle of the story. I really liked Trevor from the beginning. He is a police officer with passion, who has a sympathetic partner, but no luck with his own family. A light on the horizon appears in the form of Alex, the owner of a cafe and a real ray of sunshine.
The two were genuinely sweet together, even if the deeply wounded Alex sometimes reacts unexpectedly. The story captivates with sympathetic secondary characters and also the crime plot was well done and suspense is guaranteed. Towards the end there is a lot going on.
I am already looking forward to the next volume of the series.

A good story, and yet...

I enjoyed this book, and yet I don't think I would reread it and am not inclined to pick up book 2. I don't get it, sitting here trying to write the review struggling to identify why I did not love this book. It's short, packed with action and character development, everything is pretty believable, police partner is an amazing woman who's not even CLOSE to a caricature. All things I enjoy but it didn't really grab me...

So maybe it's a me/mood thing today, you should check it out and tell moi what you think !

good pace/romantic

It Will Come Back is a mystery/romance by B.H. Lynn. I’m a fan of mystery and suspense especially when you throw some romance on the board as well. B.H. Lynn can writes both the mystery and the romance well.

Trevor, our main character, is an Orlando police officer who has been abandoned by his family for being gay. He’s been shot in the line of duty and now dumped by his most recent boyfriend for trying to do his job well. Alex is the owner of Stay Grounded, a local coffee shop. They meet by accident one night and one thing leads to another. Unfortunately, they’re interrupted by an alarm in Alex’s shop. With a string of burglaries in the area and an additional threat at Alex’s shop, will Trevor and his partner be able to figure everything out before something happens to Alex?

I think this was a very well thought out story and was emotionally deep as well in some respects. I thought the mystery side of the story kept pace with the romance side and everything ticked along really well. Some of my favorite parts were the dialogue between Trev and Alex, so sexy in one moment and so heartfelt in the next. As this was my first book by B.H. Lynn, I’m wondering if this will be a long series as some mysteries are prone to be or something shorter. Time will tell and I’ll be along for the ride.

I loved the three main characters in this outstanding police investigation/romance story, they were intense, funny, and in Trevor's case, a fucked up mess. He has decided he's useless and, after several failed romances, feels he's better off alone, getting shot on the job didn't help his self esteem much either, and the fact his bigoted parents didn't bother to come to the hospital was the icing on his cake of gloom. This seems to be a fairly new author, only three books on Goodreads, I have the other two lined up to read and, best of all, at the end of this story is a promise from the author of another story with Trevor and Alex in 2023, look forward to that.

A really good short story! I love me a fun romp (all puns intended) adding a bit of mystery is just the cherry on top!

Despite being a shorter novella the characters feel real and the plot doesn't feel rushed. I especially love Jules, not a main character but she's fun! I look forward to the next instalment.

I like detective and supense stories, so this hit the mark on that. I would like to see more development on that portion of the plot. Characters are well developed and well written. The pace was a bit on the slow side for me, but not to a point that it would take away from the story. I look forward to reading more from this author.

This had me hooked from the start. For such a short story it still had everything I wanted from a book. I really enjoyed it and i loved Alex and Trevor so much as characters. I hadn't read anything by this author before I would definitely like to read more.

I really enjoyed this book.

I found the main characters interesting, and the side characters were well fleshed out. The plot pacing flowed well and the plot was coherent and engaging.

The mystery wasn't the most complicated, but it was well executed - the build up was done well, and the conclusion was something the reader won't see coming because the reader only has the information the main character had.

The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 was because the main character's feelings of not being good enough, of not deserving the love interest, got a bit repetitive for my taste. Other than that, a great book well written. Off to read the sequel!

This is a new to me author. What I most enjoyed about the book is how real the characters are written. They had true emotions and struggles seen in real life. The romance was a slow burn but at a good pace. I’m definitely interested to see where the next book in this series will lead.

Flawed, but I like it.

This story is all from Trevor's perspective except for an epilogue from Alex. Trevor is a character some may love or hate. Me? It's a bit of both because he's very relatable to me, for better or worse. He's an Eeyore who fluctuates between maudlin and dramatic in his thinking. Some thoughts are circular and repetitive in ways that could be annoying, but I've been there so I get it.

Alex is a great foil for him. He's a bit sunshiny in personality, but not the bright and optimistic that can lead to an overly sweet romance. He's just a realistic kind of good guy that makes for a good partner for someone like Trevor.

The case is a bit weak in the story. It's there, but not really a focus in a way that makes this a mystery or police procedural story. This is definitely a romance with some added elements. That said, the case could have been good and very interesting. It just has a weak resolution with the inclusion of a hate slur that really doesn't fit the story of the character spewing it.

I really see potential in this writer and series so I've bought all the books currently available and look forward to reading on. As I write this review, on 8/16/24, this title is on sale for 99 cents and I highly recommend grabbing it if you can. I paid full price and feel it was worth that, but a bargain is always a good thing.

This is the first story I’ve read by this author. It centers on two guys, one a police detective and the other a business owner. Trevor the Police detective, has a complete negative opinion of his ability to have a relationship. After being given dead status with his family for being gay and breaking up with his latest he is depressed. While thinking of doing the bar scene he finds it isn’t what he is looking for and stops at this new little shop he has been past before. There he meets Alex the owner. Both guys have this attraction to each other but things don’t work out as planned when Alex is faced with dealing with a break in to his shop. I love Julie, Trevor’s partner. She plays a big part in the story. This ends on a hfn and I’m anxious to see what is next.

I'm excited to see what this new-to-me author can achieve. There's a few editing errors, but the story is a solid 4.5 and my anticipation for the continued story is strong! I love the MCs, especially Alex, and I know, even though we saw a chunk of Trevor's story, there will be so much more to experience WTH these two. And, JULES! She is a wonderful "wing man" and big sister figure that I hope to see explored more. All-in-all, BH Lynn has inspiring potential. I have already loaded my kindle with he remainder of the series.

4 stars for book one

This is a new to me author, and I like her writing style. This is heavy on inner termoil, and is told from one person POV. We do get one chapter at the end from Alex's POV, but the rest is from Trevor's voice. Trevor has sellf doubt issues and has been scarred from an emotionally abusive family. This is a hurt/comfort story, and has well written spicey times. I'm curious now,, and am looking forward to reading where the two characters story evolve to.
