Bangers & Mash #1

How to Train Your Alpha

Rate this book
It’s time for the teacher’s pet to get a sizzling lesson on how to take an omega through heat…

Jesse

I wasn’t looking forward to wasting a weekend at the Bangers & Mash compound, sitting through Emergency Support Alpha training when I had no interest in actually becoming an ESA, but from the moment the course instructor, Phillip Mash, walked into the room, my alpha senses went nuts.

Who in their right mind would have an omega about to go into heat teach a class full of alphas?

Phillip

I wasn’t born yesterday. I’d taught the Heat Support class dozens of times. And I had time before my heat started. Or so I thought. But then Jesse Armstrong had to walk through the door and set me off. I thought I could keep it together, but when the two of us were trapped just as Nature took over and turned me into a whimpering pile of slick, I had no choice but to give Jesse a hands-on crash course in taking an omega through heat.

How am I supposed to teach a total newbie how to satisfy me effectively when I’m out of my mind with need?

How to Train Your Alpha is the first book in the Bangers & Mash series. It’s a great start for total newbies to the omegaverse genre, and a fun introduction to a different twist on familiar tropes. However, PLEASE NOTE – No omegas are impregnated in the course of this story, although it does happen in this universe Also, there is no shifting in this world.

Totally worth my while!

Light and entertaining, smutty little omegaverse novella. Interesting plot in a school for Emergency Support Alphas for omegas in heat and fated mates who went off on a rocky start but end up in a pretty sweet romance with a HEA.

Book safety, content warnings, and tropes down below.

I didn’t know if it was the heat hormones or if Jesse really was that big, but I felt dwarfed by him and fragile, and desperate to have him spread me wide and fuck me until I went blind. Yep, I definitely had a case of the heat-slutties.

This was a quick and very hot read, with characters that weren’t exactly cute but still likable. They’re a bit defensive and grumpy, but it’s all pretty understandable in the context of their situation. Lots of heat fun, slick, knots and enough orgasms to put a mere mortal in hospital. Oh, and it made me cry. Shocker.

It was exactly what I expected it to be, but not exactly mind-blowing. 3.5 stars rounded up.

Pretty light and angst free omegaverse romance

This was sweet and very easy to read without an overly complicated or dramatic plot.

There's a nice level of world-building which works very well if you're new to the world of alpha, beta, omega and mPreg romances.

Both characters were crafted well enough to sound like their own unique person and there's a very good sense of place.

4.5 stars. This is another new to me author that I really enjoyed and know I will read more from them in the future. I’m a newbie to omegaverse and have only read a few of them. It’s not something I’m hugely interested in but I don’t mind them every once in a while.

This is a short novella where the omega is in heat so there was a lot of sex but even with that I felt the author did such a great job writing the characters and their feelings during the heat that I really connected with them and it was more than just erotica for me. I was a little unsure at first with how quickly they were actually wanting each other but as the story went on and it was explained it made perfect sense to me and I loved it.

These two start off not liking each other but that quickly changes. I loved their dynamic and how Jesse’s Alpha instincts kicked in. He was such a good support for Phillip who was a great character. He was a great teacher!

As always with short books I really miss certain parts of the story that don’t get included. In this case it was an epilogue. I really wanted to know how they were doing after they decided to be together. Even without that it was a great story but would have loved to see a bit more. If you’re a fan of omegaverse I would definitely recommend this story!

2.5 stars. There was a lot of interesting omega world building and biology in this one. However, I didn't really like the antagonistic dynamic between the MCs at the start and the romance ended up being too instalove for me. I really liked the middle of the book with all the stuff going on during the heat both romance-wise and character-wise, but the ending felt rushed. I also really didn't vibe with the parents, they felt dismissive and unsympathetic. It was a bit hard to understand the tone the author was going for too, because most of the book seemed pretty serious but I can't take the names Banger and Mash seriously.

This was a cute and sexy MM novella. I haven't read many omegaverse books before, so I'm not sure if this is how omega heats always occur, but I really liked the set up for the series/book and the Bangers & Mash Institute. The banter between Jesse and Phillip was so fun and their sexual chemistry and heat scenes were scorching hot. Unfortunately, the conflict at the end felt 100% unnecessary and the story would have been great without it. Overall, a quick entertaining read.

CW: mentions of past forced sex work, impregnation, abortions, and discrimination of omegas

I love Omegaverse books and this was an interesting take on that genre. I loved the characters and the premise.

Jesse and Phillip are trapped together but they make the most of it. It’s hot! And now I’m off to read book 2 about Ty.

I can't handle any more Alpha Super Soaker Dick

description

I'm a bit disappointed because I actually quite liked the set up where the alpha was in an ESA / Emergency Support Alpha class and the omega was an instructor. Unfortunately the story just took a hard left and launched off the cliff-of-body-fluids-insanity almost immediately 😂

description

After that it's a zero-to-100 ride from these guys meeting to needing plastic sheets on the bed 💦💦.

Maybe the whole house, actually.

description

I mean I love me some omega-verse but this was pretty over the top:

Jesse finally sank onto his haunches when the spurts stopped and just gaped at me and at what he'd done, desperately trying to catch his breath as he did. "Two packs of wipes are not enough," he gasped...

You are correct sir 😂😂 I don't know if this was supposed to be funny but it had me cackling!!

And then,

"I'd never been such a cockslut before, and even though I started to retch as another burst of orgasm had Jesse spilling cum down my throat, I wouldn't have had it any other way just then." ...

Retch?? That's the word you chose???

There's a big difference between writing a character gagging during a blowjob - which can be mega hot when done right - and retching from firehose-dick cum overload.

description

I'll tell you one thing, Patrick isn't going to need to moisturize for a while. Anywhere.

description

I usually don't rate when DNFing but I feel I read enough of this one to be able to do so.

On that note, onward and upward, hopefully to dry (er) land 🤣🤣🤣

This was exactly what I was looking for right now. I wanted a sexy little omegaverse story but wasn't in the mood for a Roe Horvat (who has a ton of these kinds of quick hits). I just wanted something a little less saccharine than his tend to be. This was my first MM Farmer but I see there's a bunch in this series plus a few other omegaverse series by them so I have some more to choose from.

The entire novella just covers the handful of days of Phillip's heat. Phillip is an omega who trains alphas to be emergency service alphas (ESAs) who help omegas through their heats as a professional service. Jesse is an alpha and a high school teacher who came to audit Phillip's class for professional development (not actually become an ESA himself). There's not much going on here besides heat sex, some history on omega rights and the founding of the professional service agency, and a little talk of bonding/fated mates. I did appreciate the focus on birth control and the lack of pregnancy here (mpreg is possible in this universe but not included in this story). I actually think bio/breeding kink is hot as hell but don't necessarily care for the pregnancy part. Whatever, let a girl have her hobbies.

Both Phillip and Jesse were a little unlikeable at times but they ended up seeming like a good fit for each other. But really, I came here for the heat sex anyway and that's what I got. There was copious amounts of slick, pheromones, knotting, and very slutty feelings. It was pretty hot but the dirty talk could maybe use a little work and there probably could have been one or two more scenes. This was objectively not a great love story, but it was great for what I wanted right now. When I'm in the mood for short omegaverse erotica stories, I will revisit this author again.

Nicknames: sweetheart

This was my first time reading MM Farmer (or Merry Farmer), so I wasn't sure to expect, but I admit my expectations were low.

While forced proximity is not a favourite trope of mine, I did overall think this was a pretty solid story, especially for its shorter length. The setting was a very smart choice to lay the groundwork for this omegaverse without just being a straight up info dump.

One of my favourite parts of omegaverse is when authors spend the time detailing omega/alpha biology, social dynamics, etc. This was definitely one of the few, if not the only, omega books where it mentions undergarments for omegas to absorb slick, the use of spermicide on top of alpha condoms & birth control pills to prevent pregnancy.

I think the romance part and the characters fell a little flat for me, but it was , so I think that pretty much followed the typical trajectory for the former.

This was a nice, short enjoyable omegaverse, with low angst, probably medium amounts of chili peppers, and good groundwork of Farmer's omegaverse 101.

3.5 stars.

I went back and forth on my rating for this book. While I liked it okay for the most part, I just couldn't feel these two guys together. There was no real emotion outside of sex, yet they were head over heels in love with each other after only 24 hours. While I do love a well-written fated, insta-love mate story, I didn't feel it with these two.

Wow. Wow. I loved this book! This was my first book in the omegaverse, but I have read several books by Merry Farmer before and enjoyed her writing. Welp, I’m in from now on for this genre!

The book blurb gives you the details you need to know about Jesse (our alpha) and Phillip (our omega). This book is low on angst (almost nonexistent) and high on steam - but also wonderfully filled with the details of Jesse and Phillip’s emotional connection. I loved that part even more than their super hot chemistry. I highly recommend this book - it’s a quick, fun read and I read it in one evening! Can’t wait for book 2!.

Short read, extremely insta-love, overall good vibes.

Sets up the Bangers and Mash A/B/O universe, similar to Teacher by Roe Horvat (the heat teacher book). I’m intrigued by the series being centered around a heat service program. Kinda curious about some of these characters. On to book 2.

Spice: 5/5
Angst: 1/5

Not what I was expecting

From the cover and the blurb, I expected something more lighthearted and snarky. It has insta-love which lends itself to these things perfectly but it just fell flat. All the conversation was very clinical and the rest was all sexual. The misunderstanding at the end was cliché and felt really unnecessary. Like Phillip teaches classes on heat but doesn't know the difference between bonding and run of the mill heat emotions? This is a huge deficit in his education and the education they provide the alphas. I don't know if I will read the next book but it will go on my TBR.

"Did Winters really need to send me here? For a whole weekend? Couldn’t I have just read a book?" - Jesse

Per request by his boss, Jesse attends the Bangers & Mash ESA (Emergency Support Alpha) training over the weekend. Helping to truly grasp what omegas go through while in heat. He doesn't understand why him attending is necessary being a highschool teacher and all. But he goes anyways to the lectures only to be confronted by an omega that makes his teeth hurt! And does anyone else smell a peach orchard?

Phillip's hoping this will be his last class he teaches for his dad's. He wants something more with his life and knows there's something out there for him. His heat is right around the corner giving him enough time to teach this class. Only as soon as he begins the lectures he notices something odd pulling him toward an alpha. A scent drawing him in and an alpha who seems to be challenging him a lot. Is the room getting hot or has his heat just started?!

"I had a bad feeling the scent that tickled my nose belonged to Armstrong, and if it did, I was in for a rough next couple of days." - Phillip

Weekend plans change when our alpha and omega get trapped in Phillip's cabin. Phillip already showing signs of going into heat but now he's in close quarters with Jesse. The two have noticed something odd happening and having been drawn to one another. Jesse's in for a lesson of a lifetime!

I loved the two MMCs! Jesse's never been with an omega in heat before and has to learn on the go. Phillip having to teach him while suffering through the normal heat routine. Only something feels off about the whole situation and neither fully want to understand what it is.

This was a rather quick read with a fast paced plot and romance. I laughed about things while also enjoying some of the history about omegas in this universe. Also getting to understand how and why Bangers & Mash came about. Loved also getting some backstory of Sal and Nick's romance!

We do have language in the book, mentions of what omegas have had to endure in the past. Laws that were not in favor of omega's or their rights. The writing is done well and the book stays more with the light and fluffy side of things. The books can be read as standalones within the series or in order. Each couple getting an HEA! I read book two before I read this one and there was mention of this couple in that read.

We get dual POVs and I love how the two have some of the same monologue in their head! I liked getting to see the pining and little bit of angst toward the end! This book contains MM action and it's very detailed and spicy. This is an omegaverse and mpregs do happen within this universe. There's no shifters I am afraid. I love an explanation on alpha's anatomy and how things work.

Enjoy the lighthearted omegaverse with a bit of angst! Don't forget to give the author some stars!

What’s this bad timing or was it fate?
Jess had come to bangers and mash compound to monitor a emergency support Alpha’s training group. But when he got there he found out that he was going to be taking the classes. There was something about the omega that was taking the class that made him off balance. And there was a weird smell in the area a nice smell but just strange.
Philip Mash was the Son of the owners of this group. He was very proud to give this lesson but he was a bit unbalanced about what he wanted to do with his life. He knew his heat was coming soon but he thought he had a week to prepare. He had his alpha planned so he didn’t have any concerns. But as he started to take the group through their training objectives one of them kept drawing his attention Jess Armstrong. What was it about him and there was a smell, a nice smell that was in the room. When he over heard Jess say a comment About OMegas he decided to ask him to accompany him because he wanted to show him a book that he had about the history of what the Omegas had been put through over the years gone by.
As they got to his cabin the weather took a turn for the worse with thunder and lightning. They were too submerged into the book and discussing the history of the omega’s that they didn’t notice how bad the weather had got until they heard a mighty bang. A tree had come down breaking the bridge between the cabins and the classroom. And to make matters even worse Philip had gone into heat, it was now up to Jess to provide the care that he needed to get him through it. Had he learnt enough in the class?? Would they be ready for what would come of the next four days?
I wasn’t sure on Philip when he was teaching in the classroom but I tell you something I got a totally new opinion of him when he got to the cabin with Jess. I felt that we got to see the free real Philip. I liked that they communicated so well and they could talk about anything so freely Jess tried with his jokes and the banter but the connection that these two have is just magical but could they be what they were meant to be? Would they trust what they felt or would they put it down to the heat hormones?? This is the first book I have read by MM farmer and I really can’t wait for the next book for Ty’s book. I’m excited to see what comes next.

I can't remember if I found this book on a recommendation email from one of my favorite authors or on a recommendation post from one of my author fan pages on Facebook or on Facebook as an add. Either way, it grabbed my attention. Here's M.M. Farmer's Bangers & Mash series. The first novel is "How To Train Your Alpha."

This book! The angst and conflict and confusion in the beginning? Off to the instant rush of heat and steam and connection? Then to the feeling of completion and finality and pureness and love? Mix some more angst and heartache and miscommunication in there near the end? Fuck. Yes.

I wasn't sure if I should read the entire series (before I started this book), but now I"m fully committed. The soul mates and bonding thing? All of the fangirl-screams for that one. Paranormal isn't usually my thing, but soul mates and bonding? So. Much. Yes. (secret insight to my nightly, pre-falling-asleep mm daydreams--usually Drarry or Snowbaz themed).

Amazing Wonderful Story . . .

Jesse Armstrong was moaning about the fact he didn’t want to be here attending the Bangers & Mash Emergency Support Alpha training program. He was irritated and restless, with no idea what was bothering him. He really didn’t want to be in the ESA (Emergency Support Alpha) anyway, providing help to Omegas through their intense heat cycle. He would much rather be on the beach this weekend. When the instructor entered the room, Jesse scented the peaches and cream smell of Phillip Mash, and it made him restless and uncomfortable. When the teacher asked if he had a question, he told him he was auditing this class, would have no questions, and would prefer being at the beach right now! The teacher responded that others here had gone through much to be selected for training. So keep an open mind… and a closed mouth. Knowing himself to be the jerk, Jesse apologized.

Phillip could not get the scent of cedar wood after a fresh rain out of his nose. It brought back childhood memories of camping with his family. But the alpha scent muddled his thoughts and emotions and unsettled him. His heat was coming on in the next week, so he should be fine for now. He noted Jesse had all the classic markers of a particularly virile alpha, being tall with broad shoulders and well-defined muscles. Even his blond hair would attract omegas. And apparently Jesse’s presence was bringing on Phillip’s heat early.

Overheard making a comment about omegas, Jesse was surprised when his instructor walked up behind him and asked him to come with him to see something. A storm was gathering above them as they walked. As they are in Phillip’s cabin, his body responded fully to the alpha beside him. As Jesse started to go for help from Ty who was the alpha who agreed to help Phillip, a tree fell and took out the only bridge down from the mountain. There was no choice but to provide Jesse a crash course on getting an omega through heat. And what would be the outcome when it finally ended? Were they both okay walking away? Or would they finally figure out why they shouldn’t?

How to Train a Alpha by Merry Farmer was a great new take on the alpha/Omega fated mates trope.

Jesse didn't want to go to Bangers and Mash just to sit in a classroom with other alpha's instead of him enjoying his weekend on the beach. He never anticipated he would get a hands on experience and lesson on how to take an omega through their heat. That Omega was Phillip, his teacher.

Phillip has taught many classes to alpha's teaching them the biology and history of omegas. How to care for an omega through their heat and what they experience during their heat. He thought he would be fine teaching this last class before his heat, but he was wrong. After taking Jesse up to his cabin to show him a ledger from his great grandpa they get trapped in his cabin on the mountain with no way down. What makes matters worse? His heat comes on unexpectedly. He's going to find out really quickly if Jesse has what it takes to become an ESA.

I really enjoyed this book I appreciated the attention to detail throughout this book. I felt like I was getting a history and biology lesson just like the characters were. I understand that this is fiction but I felt like I was learning so much it was that detailed. Which is fantastic! I love when an author puts in a lot of effort to make their story standout and be so detail oriented. The plotline was really fleshed out and written really well. I think all of the characters added something to this book, something I really enjoyed was this was primarily centered around the main characters relationship which I think was really great.

Really well written and I'm so excited to read more in this series. I need to know what happens after Ty accidentally serviced the wrong omega.

Overall a really good story and a great introduction to the world of omegaverse for first time readers.

1st person, past tense, dual PoV
Jesse Armstrong (29-ish), alpha (cedar and rain), teacher at Olivarez High School, auditing the B&M training course
Phillip Mash (24), omega (fresh peaches and cream), Emergency Support Alpha training instructor at the Bangers and Mash Ins

This is a quick, easy read that delivers exactly what it promises to do. It's funny as I was reading it I thought to myself that it would be a great gateway book into the omegaverse for someone who wanted to dip their toe in and that almost exactly what it says in the note to the synopsis.

I've enjoyed other books by the author so I went in knowing I'd have a good time. I liked the worldbuilding and the heat sex was incendiary, I adore scent compatibility and thought the tutoring and history lesson were a clever mechanism to deliver info to the reader without it feeling like an info dump.
I'm not the biggest insta/fated fan, especially when the characters don't feel otherwise compatible and these two started off a little too antagonistic to get my buy-in. This would have gained a star if Jesse were happier to be where he was and if they had bonded over the fact that they were both educators.

What was up with Jesse's boss and Phillip's dads; were they setting them up? It was never explicitly stated but there were several vague looks and comments that made me expect some kind of matchmaking effort to be at play but that never came to fruition.

Anyhoops, these are reliable fluff to fall back on when I don't know what to read and want something a little predictable, sweet, hot, low-angst and uncomplicated.

This is the first book of the Bangers & Mash series and the first that I have read by this author. This is the story of Phillip Mash and Jesse Armstrong. Phillip is an omega and teacher of the course. He is also the son of the founders of the school. Jesse is an alpha male who is there to audit the course. He is a teacher and is learning the course to take back to the school where he teaches. Immediately the two throw sparks. Then mother nature ensures that they are trapped together when Phillip goes into heat. Jesse is going from an auditor to a participant. This is their story. I did like the premise of this story more than the actual story. I realize as the first, it has all the world building included in it. While I appreciated all the omega heat info, I found it took away from the story. It disrupted the flow and made their interactions seem like student and teacher rather than two people interested in each other. And someone with Phillips expertise shouldn't be discounting whatever emotions that come forward. So while I enjoyed the story, it didn't really flow well for me. That said, it is a well written book and it is easy to read. I look forward to trying the next book in the series.

Jesse was a new teacher at Olivarez High School and since they had reputation for encouraging excellence in our omega students, his principal encouraged him to take the course that would help him understand the Omega students. Jesse being an Alpha and dealing with most Omega who would not reach their heat around him, did what was ask but not without grumbling about missing out on the beach.

Phillip was an Omega that taught the course at B&M that showed Alphas how to assist Omega's during their heat. It was his fathers that started the services in honor of his great grandfather and other omegas that were forced into work just because of their biology. The moment Jesse and Phillip’s path cross the tension was strong as Jesse seemed dismissive of the process, but Phillip quickly learned that Jesse had never been with an omega and was about to have a rude awakening when they get trapped in a cabin during a strong and Phillip’s heat started. This was not Phillip’s first heat, but it was the first time he experienced one that was so deep and soul searing.

This is a well written story, that has the characters take you on an emotional ride and discovery that will open your heart and you watch Jesse and Phillip find the soul mate.

I was curious about omegaverse stories, but they intimidated me until one of my favorite authors mentioned that she was branching out with a new pen name. Somehow the concept wasn’t quite so intimidating with an author I adore. I snagged an ARC when she announced they were available.

MM Farmer’s Bangers and Mash series is the perfect way to dip one’s toe into the omegaverse. It’s so easy to read and engaging that I lost track of time when I was reading. In fact, one of my dogs woke me up in the middle of the night to go outside. Instead of going back to sleep when they were done taking care of business, what did I do? I picked up How to Train Your Alpha and read for an hour or two!

Jesse and Phillip, along with his Dad and Papa, were very likable and relatable. Phillip is a respected Omega teacher, and Jesse is an Alpha who happens to be auditing Phillip’s class at Bangers and Mash as continuing education. They happen to be stranded together as Phillip goes into heat. There’s never dull moment!

This is a VERY steamy read. MM is a master of evoking a reader’s emotion. For those who need a happily ever after (me), How to Train Your Alpha will not disappoint. I strongly recommend giving Bangers and Mash a try. I know I can’t wait to read Ty’s story!

Trust Merry Farmer to put her own unique spin on her first foray into writing omegaverse stories. Even the title is a twist on the usual sort of story in this genre. I really enjoyed the main premise of this book where two men have started a school to train Alphas how to help omegas through their heats. I loved the dynamic between the new to the class alpha, Jesse and the long time teacher omega, Phillip where Ms. Farmer has done a lot trope twisting. A large amount of this book is set in a cabin with Phillip being “taught” by Jesse. This could be a positive or negative depending on how much of that sort of thing you like reading about. Personally I like it, just as long as it is well written, which in this case is decidedly well written as is a hallmark of Ms. Farmer’s work. If you like omegaverse books or you have never read any, but are curious and like mm stories then I recommend this book to you. Enjoy!.
