The first book in a gripping series of submarine adventures starring Jack Boxer! Perfect for fans of Douglas Reeman, Michael DiMercurio, George Wallace and Don Keith.
Jack Boxer takes command of a new super submarine…
When the submarine Sting Ray is involved in a fatal collision, her captain, Jack Boxer, is given command of an entirely new kind of submarine.
Built in secrecy, launched in silence, and manned by a phantom crew, the Shark is America’s unique high-technology submarine. As far as the U.S. government is concerned, the Shark doesn’t exist. Should it ever be in danger of capture, the orders are self-destruct.
When satellite photographs reveal a newly built Soviet missile base within striking distance of the American coast, the Pentagon is concerned.
Now Boxer and the crew of the Shark have their first operational take out the base … and get out alive.
Can they destroy the secret missile base? Or will the Shark’s first mission be its last?
The only way to stay alive is to dive deep and strike hard…
DEPTH FORCE is the first book in the Depth Force Submarine Thrillers action-packed naval adventure novels set in the 1990s and starring submariner Jack Boxer.

Irving Greenfield was born in Brooklyn, New York. He was a youthful runaway, a merchant seaman, and a soldier during the Korean War, afer which his writing talent burst into print. His novel, The Ancient of Days, was a best-seller for six weeks and Tagget was made into a film for TV. his work has appeared in a variety of media, but, of all his works, Only the Dead Speak Russian is his masterpiece.
Captain Jack Boxer and his crew accept an apparent dismissal from Naval service in order to secretly operate the Shark, an advanced new sub, in a Cold War beneath the ocean waves.
Holy cow, this book has no business being more than 300 pages long. When Greenfield is writing the kind of action and intrigue that bring a reader to this kind of story, things clip along at a nice pace. However, he often seems less interested in exploring the depths of the ocean than in plumbing the depths of a woman’s…but there’s no need to be crude. Boxer’s many sexual encounters are presented in detail and read like old Penthouse Forum letters. A majority of the book is spent detailing a series of these relationships, not to mention the time he spends with his ex-wife and son. To give you an idea of what I mean, Greenberg spends about two pages on a sequence in which the Shark is buried in an undersea trench by depth charges and must work it’s way free, while in other parts of the book, he devotes an equal or greater number of pages to individual sexual encounters, cocktail parties, and a conversation with his son about what kind of pizza to get. There’s a really good 120-page book in here somewhere.
Rousing tale, poorly told. Technically flawed. Doubt Greenfield ever served in the USN, much less on submarines. And his vocabulary and terminology would suggest he may not have been a native English speaker. Submarine novels MUST be authored by submariners to be credible!
My research indicates Irving Greenfield passed away in 2020 yet this book was published in 2022. The tech in the story indicates it was likely written years ago: fiberoptics and microwave ovens are regarded as novel. There are no credits or copyright notices anywhere in the book....very suspicious.
Don't waste your time reading this unless you enjoy frustration.
As a former submariner during the Cold War, this book is about as far from realistic as you can get. It is too obvious that the author has never been aboard a real sub, and may have based his boats on the imagination of Jules Verne. IMO, this book is awful. Even the dialog was horrible. No sub officer or crew talks the way the author writes their dialog. If I ever heard the captain say, “make your depth two thousand five zero zero feet.” the whole control room would be rolling on the floor laughing at him. Twenty five hundred is much more understandable. I’m sorry. I couldn’t get more than halfway through this book.
Way too many issues with details. I served on a Sub Tender, and my son was a submarine officer, even given that this submarine is fiction it is way too hard to believe. Nuclear subs have only on reactor and one shaft. The depth the story operates at is way to deep. Shooting "War shot" torpedoes and missiles when not at war is simply not done. This story should be rated science fiction, and hard to believe at that. Sorry not my cup of tea.
The whole story is not very realistic at all. Ships and subs firing away at each other and destroying an enemy base with a nuke, even though no-one is at war. Nuclear torpedoes used when no state of war exists. Author also needs a technical advisor so weapon and vessel at least seem to be feasible instead of pure fantasy
Too much womanising by Boxer, who was portrayed as some superhero. Too many loose ends that were not explained or closed off, and way too many random coincidences. Naval boat commanders would probably roll their eyes at the tactics and actions of the Shark commander. A good yarn, but that’s all. Not exactly a classic gripping adventure built around realism. Then, maybe such a super sub is possible some day, who knows, with a superman like Boxer in command.
Exciting storyline but really the Captian is sexist
I would have given 5 stars as I liked the book, but the Captain has taken 4 different women to bed and looks like this behavior isn't going to change in future books. He only has to meet a women and hours later he takes her to bed. This distracts from the story. I'll read his second book and see what follows.
To many mistakes on terminology for my liking. You don't open the inner door with outer door open. Tube interlocks would prevent it. Several other items were to far fetched for my submarines mind.
good sub story and finally a captain with human needs
The military genre needs this writer. It has the action and some thriller components but also has a captain with multiple girlfriends which aids the storyline. Looking forward to book two.
What a scary, exciting thrill ride of an adventure with a subject matter that is so timely. Experts believe that a future WWIII will be fought and won on and in the sea. The complexity of these submarines is mind boggling. So glad I found this series!
Story was it remediate writing plot not great but tradable to much pornography makes it a b plus story line drop the sex and improve the story writing and you would have a good book
Based upon its sci-fi premise, it’s entertaining. The sex scenes are, of course, laughable when you consider his stress levels and the conditions behind his divorce and his bitchy ex. Kim looking for improvement in the second book. I hope it’s there!
I only got through the first 6 or 7 pages and had to stop. The prose is difficult to follow, the sentences jumble into one another, and the terminology used is woefully inept.
