Calling all you Fablehaven fans!!! Mark your calendars to enjoy this delightful cookbook coming from the author Brandon Mull and his sister-in-law Cherie Mull.
I really enjoyed reading through this one. Not only is it a cookbook, but there's a fun story you'll get to enjoy with those sneaky brownies you've come to know and maybe love from the series.
The artwork is fabulous as well and brings the fun of Fablehaven to this new offering. I have to say that the names of the recipes brought back memories of the different characters from the series. When the books first came out I devoured them and then my children did as well. Fablehaven and Dragonwatch are favorites in my household.
This cookbook would be a fun one to use during summertime with kids and planning fun cooking lessons/activities with them. Or fun for the Fablehaven fans who want a themed birthday party or how about a Halloween party. I think it would even be fun to use as an incentive for the struggling reader or the voracious reader as well. Finish a book and try out a few recipes then finish another book and try out a few more. Something fun to add to making reading a joy. These are the books that truly helped my own children jump into reading and love being fully engrossed in a wonderful story!
I'm looking forward to trying out several of these recipes: Fairy Toast Muriel’s Pretzel Knots Ogre Stew Bubda’s Sloppy Guac Calico Bread Lena’s Loaded Crepes Bracken’s Unicorn Shakes Zombie Cake Eyeballs Dragon Egg Cupcakes Goblin Glop Trifle Tanu’s Bottled-Up Emotions Singing Sisters Bubbling Brew
I think Bracken's Unicorn Shakes definitely look like something Newel and Doren would love! And I bet several kids would be right there with them enjoying them!!!
I received a copy from the publisher, Shadow Mountain Publishing, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
Happy Reading (or rather baking/cooking and eating)!!!
A fun inventive cookbook for kids and parents alike. A short story by Brandon starts off the cookbook, then the delicious recipes with little snippets of the books reference to it. The recipes are fun and simple with a fun variety. There are also craft recipes for slime and such at the end, which is a great idea for a kids centered cookbook. The pictures are beautifully done, and there is one to accompany each recipe, which I love as well as being easily categorized. There is an index at the end for simplicity of looking up specific recipes.
Fablehaven has been one of my favorite series to read and also to share with my children and my students. The Official Fablehaven Cookbook by Brandon Mull & Cherie Mull(his sister-in-law) is a fun addition to the Fablehaven family. This book starts with a new short story based on the Fablehaven reserve starring the magical Brownies that live on the Fablehaven preserve. It was cute and one that Fablehaven fans will love. I also loved all of the creative recipes related to characters from the series and events from the books. It was great that there are craft recipes too.
The nice thing is that the recipes are kid-friendly and easy to make, with adult supervision of course. The pictures are beautiful in the book and it's a pleasure to just read through the book. The Official Fablehaven Cookbook is one that Fans must buy for their Fablehaven book collection.
If you’re a Fablehaven fan or enjoy creative themed cookbooks, this is a must! My kids and I love the Fablehaven series and were thrilled to give this cookbook a try. We were delighted to find a short story at the very beginning involving Grandpa & Grandma Sorenson, Tess, Knox, and those hardworking Brownies. The recipes that follow are delicious with whimsical titles related to the series, fairly easy to make for older elementary school kids and up, and have easily obtained ingredients. Also included are fun hand drawn illustrations, beautiful photographs, and a brief description at the beginning of each recipe describing how it relates to a Fablehaven character or story.
The first recipe, Pumpkin Chocolate Chip muffins, is tied directly to The Missing Brownies short story found at the beginning and is so yummy! From there, the cookbook is divided into seven sections: Breakfast Lunch and Snacks Midsummer’s Eve Treats Drinks Brandon’s Favorites Crafts.
Each section contains at least six to ten recipes or more, with over 50 recipes total.
My family loved the Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Muffins, Secret Satyr Soft Granola, Sorenson Buttermilk Pancakes, Easy Fair Folk Tortilla Pizzas, Olloch the Glutton’s Carmel Biscuit Bars, and so many more! I can’t wait to try all the recipes. It was also amazing to have craft recipes for Hugo’s Kinetic Sand and Wizard Slime among others.
There are so many fantastic recipes that there’s bound to be several favorites for anyone who picks this up. It’s a great way to combine a love of reading with cooking. Many of the recipes will be perfect for Halloween or birthday themed parties. Highly recommend, especially to Brandon Mull fans! I received an advanced complimentary copy from the publisher. All opinions are my own and voluntarily given.
The Official Fablehaven Cookbook is a must buy for Fablehaven fans. This is a beloved series for me and I loved this added touch to keep the books alive even longer. I especially enjoyed The Missing Brownies story at the beginning of the book. The illustrations are darling and pictures of the recipes make them look irresistible! There were even some fun Fablehaven themed crafts. Loved it! Thank you to the publisher for the gifted copy. All opinions are my own.
Fun cookbook for fans of the Fablehaven series (which, admittedly, I have not read, ha ha, though we do have a couple of the books in our family library, so I think my kids read them)! The book begins with a new mystery-themed short story relating to the series, so it's a fun extra for fans as well. The cookbook portion is divided into the sections of Breakfast, Lunch and Snacks, Midsummer's Eve, Treats, Drinks, Brandon's Favorites, and Crafts. Each recipe includes one full-color photo with a tie-in to the characters and the stories -- sometimes a direct quote from the books, others just a short narrative explaining its origin from the characters and stories. The recipes are simple, not elaborate, so I believe this is meant to be a kids easy-to-use cookbook, as the Fablehaven series is targeted to late elementary/middle grade readers. There are very clear step-by-step instructions, and all the ingredients are very common ones that everyone should have on hand or can easily add on to your shopping list when you and your kids want to make some of the fun treats. The recipes range from treats, snacks, desserts, meals, and drinks, giving kids a wide variety of options to make food tying into their favorite Fablehaven stories. The Midsummer's Eve section contains a fruit salsa, mummy dogs, cake pops, and two more desserts. I'm assuming this section also relates to a holiday in the books, but there's not an explanation for the inclusion of this section, only for the individual recipes. Overall, the short story was enjoyable, even for me as someone who hasn't read any of the books, though there were some things I didn't understand completely, which I'm sure other readers of the series would understand better. The recipes are fun. The pictures are well done. The book has a great graphic design overall, including pencil/black-and-white/charcoal drawings of some of the Fablehaven fairies and other creatures in the story section and also throughout the rest of the book on some of the recipe pages. This is a great youth and family cookbook, but I think it would also be great for teachers to incorporate into using the recipes and their curriculum relating to this fun fantasy series!
***I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.***
At the beginning of this cookbook is a story of Seth and Kendra and brownies that disappear in their kitchen. The sections include; Breakfast, Lumch and Snacks, Midsummer’s Eve, Treats, Brandon’s Favorites ending with some crafts. The directions are clear but while some are easy like pancakes or using a cake mix with add ins to make Zombie Cake Eyeballs others are more complex. And although there are healthy things like Tomato Soup or hummus most of the recipes are on the sweeter side. I love that each recipe has an accompanying color photo.
You don’t have to be a Fablehaven fan to use the cookbook. I can see many of the recipes being used for themed parties. Fablehaven books are geared towards upper elementary school and middle-schoolers. And I’m sure that age group would love to assist in making some of these fun recipes. I looked up Cherie Mull who co-wrote this book and learned she is Brandon’s sister in law and she runs her own bakery. Thank you to NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for the temporary ARC and I am leaving a voluntary review.
I received an ARC of this book through Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.
Fablehaven super fans are going to want to purchase this book just for the short story in the front and the beauty of the book itself. The recipes are nothing earth shattering, but they will be fun for use with kids, and they'll get those super fans excited for sure. My daughter is particularly enamored with the fairy toast and the easy fairy folk tortilla pizzas. I will definitely order this book for my library and (being a Fablehaven super fan myself) I've already pre-ordered it myself.
This is a great recipe book for anyone who has read the Fablehaven Series, I have not, but still enjoyed the story in the beginning and that each recipes derives from the books. The recipes themselves are straightforward, easy to follow, and to obtain the ingredients. I like that each recipe also has a picture to go with it so you can see what it looked like after it'a made. Most of the recipes do require adult help to a degree, unless your kid is well versed in kitchen safety.
Loved the story at the beginning of this cookbook. I am always looking for new things to try and I really liked that there was a variety of items including fun things for the kids. Plus, a bonus- SLIME recipe. If your kids are anything like mine they will LOVE that.
Thank you to Shadow Mountain Publishing for the #gifted copy.
This book was so good I cannot stress this enough! Reading and cooking are two of my favorite things in the whole world so being able to do both is just fantastic! The kids and I create some of these amazing recipes and we look forward to making more! I have even made some of them vegan and will hopefully be able to do that with most.
A very cute children's story precedes the recipes as well as a tiny Fablehaven type intro to each recipe. This is what I read. It has piqued my interest enough that I may try reading a Fablehaven book. The story is about a woods brownie coming to the protector to get help finding five of his brownies who have gone missing.
Wonderful! This cookbook is filled with delicious, simple treats made almost exclusively from common ingredients most people already have (which is a surprisingly rare feature in cookbooks), in addition to a few fun crafts, book excerpts, and a great Fablehaven short story. As a fan of Brandon Mull's books, I loved reading this addition to the Fablehaven universe. Additional props to Cherie Mull, who really hit it out of the park with her recipes!
I was given this book as an ARC and my kids and I love it! It’s got such fun recipes and a cute little story in the beginning. My kids looked at it for hours
I was a fan of this cookbook before I even opened it up to see which recipes were inside! Themed cookbooks are so fun and the creativity that went into these recipes was astounding.
The fun thing that makes this cookbook stand out were the stories included within the pages of recipes.
The pictures were exciting and fantastical. Being a sucker for anything breakfast related myself, the apple pancakes, buttermilk pancakes, loaded crepes, and fairy toast all stood out to me.
If you’re hungry and like to experiment with different types of meals, this cookbook will be perfect for you!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I was expecting this to be just recipes from my favorite series ever but it’s even better! It starts off with the cutest short story ever surrounding Knox, Tess, and the Brownies! Thanks Shadow Mountain publishing for the review copy!
The Official Fablehaven Cookbook is a fun addition to the Fablehaven family! I love the short story at the beginning of the book. It’s super cute and I love how it brings in the brownies from the stories.
There are some fun recipes in this cookbook! I know the kids will love most of them! (Not sure the kids will like the hummus, but I know they’ll love the Mummy Dogs!) Many of the recipes are simple enough for the kids to help, which is great!
As I said before, the Mummy Dogs look fun and easy! Zombie Cake Eyeballs are always a fan favorite, and Bracken’s Unicorn Shakes look magical! It would definitely take some brownie magic for my apple pie to look as perfect as Grandma Sorenson’s—do you think they’d come to my house?? Hugo’s Mudslide Ice Cream Cake sounds delicious, and Grandma Larsen’s Sugar Cookies are super cute (Mine would NEVER look as cute as hers, but there’s always hope for a little brownie help)!
Most of the recipe names come from the Fablehaven world, which makes them fun, especially for the kids. There are recipes for breakfast, lunch and snacks, Midsummer’s Eve, treats, drinks, Brandon’s Favorites, and a few crafts.
If you’re a Fablehaven family and have all the other books, The Official Fablehaven Cookbook will be a fun addition to your set and your kitchen! It’s a fun way to incorporate reading into the day and the daily chores! You’ll have lots of helpers to make a potion of Tanu’s Bottled-Up Emotions or Singing Sisters Bubbling Brew, that’s for sure!

I was a little skeptical when I heard that a cookbook was being made for Fablehaven but you guys, don't be skeptical. Go all in and get this book! If you are a Fablehaven fan or want your kiddos to be one and are starting on the books-go get this cookbook. It is a must buy for all old, new and yet to be fans.
One thing I always look for in a cookbook is if it has pictures because I'm sorry, I want to know what I am making. And I feel like cookbooks that come with ties to books definitely need pictures. This cookbook did not disappoint, it has pictures for every single recipe. It could get five stars just for that alone. I also gave it a five-star rating for the yummy, easy to follow recipes that fill this cookbook, cover to cover. Your mouth is definitely going to water as you flip through these and once you make them your taste buds will be even happier.
Five stars for creativity as well! I've been a fan of Fablehaven from the very beginning and going through this cookbook brought back all the favorite scenes from the books for me and more. I'll definitely be rereading the series because of this cookbook. It also captured the attention of my kids who can't even read yet. My toddler flipped through with me and said more than once "Ooo that looks fun. Let's make that, and that, and that." This is a cookbook for the whole family to enjoy whether you are a Fablehaven fan or not. I think after making a few of these recipes you'll be one if you aren't already. Definitely a cookbook to add to the kitchen!
* I received an advanced copy from the publisher/author and all opinions are my own.
Starting with a story about Seth and Kendra dealing with the disappearance of some Brownies who often help in their kitchen (if you know the series, you won't be surprised at the perpetrators!), this is a solid collection of recipes for different meals, although it seemed to skew a little to the sweet side. It reminded me a bit of The Caretaker's Guide to Fablehaven in the beautiful formatting-- lots of full color pictures, page decorations, and very good photos of every recipe, which is a big plus. Everything was tied into the book very well, and there's a bit of discussion about the food, which I always enjoy.
Am I going to make a unicorn milkshake now? Probably not. Would my mother have let me roll the rim of a glass in frosting and then in sprinkles when I was twelve? Absolutely not. Would I be more than happy to melt chocolate and make that unicorn horn if I had a grandchild? You bet. This is fun to read, and since I do a lot more reading than cookie, this was fine. The recipes are generally pretty solid; pancakes, hummus, and play dough recipes all looked like ones I had. For fans of the series, this would make a great gift, especially if packaged with some of the more exotic ingredients.
Would I have let my own personal children make fairy toast? No. Was my mother perfectly fine with cinnamon toast? Yes. If making guacamole and putting a face on it makes you happy, this is a great book to have. Just make sure you lay in an extra supply of sugar!

I have not read the Fabelhaven books but they are hard to keep on our bookshelves so the book was a no-brainer. Lots of interesting recipes are included and most are easy to make and don't require chef's training for them to turn out! Lots of ingredients that you would already have at home make them easy to create without a special trip to the grocery store: check the book out and have some yummy treats, even if you have not read the book.
This was such a cool cookbook! I love to cook and read, so this book was perfect for me. The Fablehaven series is a middle grade series that I loved as a kid, so I was super excited to see this cookbook. The cookbook fits with the age demographic of the series. There is a cute little introduction story in the beginning, and the rest of the book is filled with fun and creative recipes. Each of the recipes has a short paragraph about it, and its place in the series which will definitely interest Fablehaven lovers. The book is full of pictures, so readers will be able to follow along with the decorations of the treats as well! The recipes mostly seem pretty easy to make, so it would be perfect for younger bakers and cooks. It might also help kids who are not necessarily as interested in cooking and baking to get into it. The ingredients are pretty standard for the most part. Some recipes have more specialized ingredients, but there are also opportunities for substitutes if necessary. I would definitely recommend this fun cookbook for young bakers and cooks but especially those who love Fablehaven!
I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the author. All views expressed are only my honest opinion, I was not required to write a positive review.
For context, I am an adult who enjoys a good fantasy adventure even when the target audience is a middle-grader and the Fablehaven series was one that I really liked. I also like cooking and have a rather serious collection of cookbooks and a few not-so-serious cookbooks; from hobbits to Hogwarts, Discworld to Disney and even Downton [Abbey], I have the official or sometimes unofficial cookbooks so its fair to say that I have some understanding of the subject. With that out of the way, my thoughts on this book: This official Fablehaven cookbook really does a wonderful job of truly bringing in Fablehaven, even starting with a short story that I'm sure will engage kids even if they haven't read the stories before. The illustrations are great as well and appear to be by the same artist that worked on the original books. The book is well organized and there are photos accompanying every recipe. All of the recipes are straight-forward, most with a short list of simple steps and ingredients, and look like kids can help make them. And a short "craft" section in the end is an extra bonus. This book is a winner for Fablehaven enthusiasts and whimsical budding junior chefs alike.
I received a copy of this book for an honest review thru NetGalley. #TheOfficialFablehavenCookbook #NetGalley.
The Official Fablehaven Cookbook shares recipes that go along with the Fablehaven series. As soon as my kids saw this book, they wanted to try the recipes especially since it went along with one of their favorite book series. We started with Muriel's Pretzel Knots. I made it with my son. I did put a little less flour than it said in the recipe. With the elevation changes, you'll want to judge the amount of flour based on the feel of the dough. My nine-year-old son made it on his own as well, but he followed the recipe exactly and they didn't turn out very well. I did like that he was encouraged to try and bake from this book. My seven-year-old daughter and four-year-old son have made the fairy toast recipe several times. I've also made Grandma Larsen's Sugar Cookies twice and they were a favorite with my kids. I loved that the recipe book is very kid friendly and that my kids are excited to make the recipes. After seeing their excitement, I felt like this was a good early cookbook to start kids cooking and baking. This book was a hit in our household, and I would recommend getting this book for your family to try.
I received a free copy of this book to review, however, this is my honest opinion.
A story and a cookbook! Perfect. I am in love with this cookbook. They have done an amazin job at creating an adventure while creating some wonderful treats. Along with great recipes you will be treated to their new story “The Missing Brownies:A Fablehaven Adventure.” These house brownies are perfect for a cookbook, they are known to come in the night and create treats. This was a fun book for our family. It was so hard to pick our favorites. We enjoyed the Sorenson Buttermilk Pancakes, Fairy Garden Cupcakes and the Shadow Charmer’s Hot Chocolate Draught. There are 50 recipes in this delightful book and we can’t wait to try them all. We also can’t wait to share with the rest of the family. The pictures in the book are so colorful and appetizing. My 4 year old loved being able to hear a story that goes with what we are eating. It has ignited some adventures for him. I highly recommend this book for families who love food, adventure and some great story telling. We hadn’t had the opportunity to enjoy the books from this author but now my son wants to hear them all. We received this as an ARC and are so grateful. We will be buying this for our home and to share as gifts for family and friends. 100 Stars to this adventure. Enjoy
The beginning of this cookbook has a short story from the book series, then all of the amazing recipes, and it ends with crafts based off the series too! All of these recipes look so yummy and FUN! I personally love the Midsummer Strawberry Salsa and Cinnamon Sugar Tortilla Chips, S'mores Pizza, Shadow Charmer's Hot Chocolate Draught, and the Garus's Wild Brownies. I haven't actually read Fablehaven but now I want to. These recipes and the short story included in this cookbook are a great quick look at the world found within the book series and I'd love to know who Garus is and who/what the Shadow Charmer is! I love that the author of this cookbook is the same author of the series that inspired this one. If you or someone/a child you know loves Fablehaven, they should be gifted this cookbook or be made aware of its existence! The pictures of all of the food is a bonus because, as a picky eater myself, I love being able to see what it is I'm going to be making! I do wish there was a tools/utensils section and maybe some helpful hints or alternatives included. Otherwise, it's a great cookbook!
As I said, I know nothing of the world and this cookbook makes me wish I did! Thank you to NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for this ARC!♥
If you like making themed food, planning parties and trying new recipes that are FUN and bookish-you’ll definitely want to add this one to cart!
@shadowmountainpub is one of my favorite publishers for cookbooks. The quality is always amazing and the cookbooks are made to last!

The first recipes I’m going to start with are:
•Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cupcakes •Apple Pancakes (easy to substitute to dairy free) •Ogre Stew (easy to substitute to dairy free) •Midsummer Strawberry Salsa (DF and GF)
Each recipe featured has a small section of where you can find that recipe mentioned in the books.
Grab this cookbook and get ready for some fun fall recipes for the entire family!
Happy baking and happy reading!
Thanks to @shadowmountainpub for the copy. All thoughts in this review are my own.
I have a thing for cookbooks and have started to collect literary cookbooks so was very excited to have the opportunity to read an advance digital copy of this cookbook that is inspired by the favorite childhood series, Fablehaven.
The cookbook is broken down into seven sections, each packed with simple recipes inspired by the world of Fablehaven. The recipes are easy to follow, use simple common ingredients and are accompanied by mouthwatering pictures of the final product.
For me, what makes this cookbook special is the storytelling within the cookbook. There is a short story at the front of the cookbook and each recipe has a little snippet introducing the recipe and its relevance to the series or particular character.
The recipes themselves aren’t earth shattering, but they are whimsical and fun. Perfect for fans of Fablehaven and collectors of literary cookbooks like myself.
A hearty thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the opportunity to preview an advance digital copy of this fun cookbook. It was an absolute pleasure to read through.
This is a well designed and attractively presented cookbook tying in kid-friendly recipes with the characters, setting, and tone of the Fablehaven series. And there are a couple of crafts “recipes”, as well. Almost fifty cooking recipes run the gamut from snacks to desserts, evoking bubbling brews, dragons’ eggs, goblin glop, and so much more.
Great bonus: the book even opens with a new, complete Fablehaven story! In addition, each recipes was nicely introduced with its Fablehaven origin.
The recommended reading age is 8-11 but some older folks will want to be involved in the production of a lot of these recipes. I particularly enjoyed the Midsummer Strawberry Salsa.
I highly recommend this cookbook for good content (recipes and the bonus story!) and visually appealing presentation.
I was granted an advance reader copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.
Having read the Fablehaven and Dragonwatch series as they released, I was especially excited for this read--and it did not disappoint!
The bonus short story was just what I'd expect, and Doren and Newel were a hoot as ever.
Kids and adults alike will enjoy the recipes (and the end results!). The dishes remind me a lot of those included in An Unexpected Cookbook: The Unofficial Book of Hobbit Cookery (high praise!), and the two would complement each other nicely--both as fantasy-inspired cookbooks and inspiring readers/chefs to explore the worlds they're based on.
I especially liked the Mexican and Mediterranean recipes included. I'm already hungry!
I received an eARC of the book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
