Theodore is every father’s nightmare and my sweetest revenge. I was nine years old when my dad broke my heart. Ten years later I finally get my chance to break his. And what better way to hurt him than to mess with the only thing he’s ever loved—his football team. Seducing the team’s star quarterback is easy. Throwing him into my dad’s face? Even easier. Letting him go proves much more difficult.Coach warned me to stay away from his daughter. At first glance Emery is the farthest from what I would consider my type—sweater sets, pleated slacks, and a boarding school pedigree. Ignoring her should’ve been easy. I tried. I really did. Some people are worth ruining lives for, even if one of those lives is my own.

No. This was not it. While I liked very much she was sexually experienced and owned it. I hated that she chased him so she could stick it to her father (figuratively speaking).
I also didn’t like him. He was a manwhore.
I also did not liked how got naked in front of her father. Call me a prude but really? A grown ass woman lets her father see her naked as a bird just to see him squirm. I get it her father abandoned her when she was a kid after her mother died that’s the reason why she hates him and she’s sleeping with anyone that he doesn’t like and letting him see her naked. That’s her revenge? Also why bring up that she’s a sociopath if it’s going to be swept under the rug? It was clear that she wasn’t going to tell hero that she’s one so why did the father bring it up if it didn’t cause any drama?

I hate NA books. So freaking childish. And not my thing. Next book will a hero who has been casually seeing the heroine’s cousin.

2.5 stars because she was sexually experienced but that’s about it.

HUH

That was unexpected.

2 dark souls smack bang in the middle of a "normal" New-Adult-university setting
No bully trope (except at the end as an intro to the next book)
No cheating
No love triangles
No other women drama
No bland other men trope
No bouncy party-loving best friend to the h
No longgggg drawn out flashbacks or paragraph after paragraph of painful recapping of tortured pasts
No woe-is-me Hxhs
No secret agendas
No dramatic personality changes

Angsty without plot convenient drama (there ARE authors who can do it!)
Alpha without the unnecessary asshole-ishness - he's an asshole with cause
A solid HEA - they're going nowhere without each other

The Hxh have both had horrid chidhoods
Yes, it has shaped them into the dark souls they are now, but they don't put themselves out by directing their brokeness at others
They're not the kind of broken that makes them downtrodden and mopey.
I don't feel sad for them. I don't need to heal them. I don't feel they're weak.

They see the corresponding deep rooted darkness in each other
Their darkness is...hectic... but its contained...except where they're pushed by outside influences
They don't go tearing down people and places because of their issues
Their drama is within themselves and each other
Their bond is solid and deeply intense and excluding - I cant find the right word now - but they're so powerfully united in their madness (even as they try to not be consumed by that connection) that they're separate from anyone else.

One of my fav heroes.
EXCERPT:
“I’ve never loved anyone in my life. The only thing I’ve ever felt for another living soul is lust and loyalty—the first for women, that latter for my teammates.”
He is possessive in the most masculine way:
EXCERPT:
“A guy comes staggering down the sidewalk toward us. I watch him as his gaze settles on Emery. A sloppy smile pulls his lips. “Hey, beautif—”
“No.” I silence him with a palm to his chest and firm shove.”

I see this hero but I don't connect with him because she consumes him and he has nothing to give anyone outside of his world. I felt like a dayam voyeur during his internalizations - like I wasn't supposed to be there.
He's hardworking and loyal to his friends but apart from that and football, nothing else is even on his periphery.
I love him completely.

The heroine, with her pearl earrings and cashmere sweater sets, is beautiful and delicate.
On the outside...
She doesn't so much as raise her voice, but her impact on others is...disconcerting (fun, LOL)
She is cunning and dispassionate in the most lady-like way I have ever seen in a heroine
She's emotionally disengaged and literally can give no fucks at all.
She not once lets up on this.
Until she does.
And that's when things really start moving, changing, developing

Their story is just long enough to assure me that they will be together forever.
The epilogue shows how far she's come without changing; without losing her uniqueness
It shows his love for her remains steadfast and sure.
EXCERPT:
“I’ve never felt more sane in all my life. You balance the scales, Kitten. You bring me peace. Silence the demons. You possess my soul.”

AND THEN THERE'S THIS:
The hero is objecting to someone's unwanted advances:
I grip her wrist and turn around to face her.........“Not tonight.”
Her seductive smile falls instantly and is replaced by fiery eyes. “Why not?”
“Do I need to give a reason? No means no.”

Hail Mary is a very fast-paced new adult romance novel. Normally, I like the books I read to be longer (this one is 152 pages) because it takes me some time to connect to the characters. However, J.B. Salsbury is one of my favorite authors so I trusted her to deliver a great romance regardless of the size of the book. What really made me love this story the most was the characters. Especially Emery intrigued me the most because she wasn't the usual heroine I read in new adult romances.

When Theodore AKA Spider meets her for the first time at a bar he thinks of her as a delicate good girl, and boy did she -surprise him with her forwardness. She is bold, fierce and a go-getter. However there is also a side to her she keeps hidden because she is afraid to get hurt is she opens up. That was something that both Spider and Emery had in common. Their relationship starts off as meaningless hook-ups. She is also the coach's daughter, so Spider tried to stay away in the beginning. However, Emery goes after what she wants, and she really wants Spider. But when things start to get serious and feelings get involved she tries to distance herself from him.

I really enjoyed Hail Mary and thought the progress of Emery and Spider's relationship was well paced. These two were a good match and I loved how awesome Emery was. The writing as always was great. This author always knows how to hook me to the story, and I can confidently say that I'll blindly pick up any book she writes. This is light and fun new adult romance, and I already look forward to the next book.

NA Romance normally grates on my last nerve to the point I want to smash my kindle against a wall. Without fail, 90% of them are all the same: manwhore hooks up with the innocent, sheltered (i.e. stupid) virgin who has been pining for him all her life. It gets boring real fast. Finding NA heroines I can relate to are few and far between, so imagine my surprise when I stumbled across this gem.

Right from the start, Emery is different. She looks one way and acts another, the whole time smirking at how wrong everyone is about her. She owns her sexuality and doesn't give a shit if people don't like it. I especially loved how Spider (hero) has no idea what to do with her, wants to stay away from her crazy but he just can't. I also liked how it's Emery who is reluctant to make things real between them, and Spider who gives her the time and space she needs without letting her go.

I especially loved the way the author handled Emery's father. Too often things are swept under the rug, but I liked that this seemed more real to me and made so much sense for her character.

Really enjoyed this one. I read the blurb of the first book and I'm pretty sure it would annoy the shit out of me. I don't want to ruin my high with this book. The next one in the series sounds intriguing because the heroine but I don't think I can get past the dick of a hero. I'll probably spend more time rolling my eyes than reading. So even if this book is the only one I read in this series, it was worth it.

4.5 stars bumped up to 5 because it's not often I stumble across a good one!

It’s early hours of the morning so will write a review when I wake up. Needless to say I really enjoyed this one!!

Don't let the synopsis fool you...the heroine is NO VIGIN MARY! I'd venture to say that she was actually worse than some of JB's Heros! Thankfully though we didn't get any OW/OM scenes and only the briefest mention of their sexual past. She played just as well as the boys do and used the many weapons in her arsenal to her advantage. She knew how to work things to her advantage and had no qualms about doing so (sounds like the typical asshole Hero right?). She owned her femininity and her sexuality BUT she did it with a finesse that made her likeable (to me atleast...i KNOW there are people who will disagree). I liked her strength and I liked that she was borderline sociopath in some ways.
I enjoyed he Hero to...her was strong but also weak to her. It was a good balance and I liked their relationship growth. He stood up for her and to her at the right times. He gave her the strong hand she needed without being overbearing or chasing her away. I also really liked that he said ILY first.
So, overall a good read but the heroine made the book for me :-) I'm also looking forward to the next one...i just hope that heroine stays strong and doesn't change herself just to fit into the Hero's life. That Hero has some serious making up to do based on their first real interaction.....

I don’t like her

I usually love this author’s characters even for shorter books. Her character development is good. Emery is just mean, yes she has a sad childhood, but her cruelty is so unnecessary and yet she feels privileged even if she isn’t. Female independence is so important but, Pure cruelty does not equal strength.

And here I thought I loved Ro and Carey. Well, move over, because Emery and Spider were the bomb.

Emery is the football coach's daughter. Estranged daughter is a more accurate term. She was just nine years old when her mother died and her father put him into boarding school, so it felt a lot like she had lost both parents at such a young age. Now her inheritance is not yet released fully so she's attending BSU and has to live with her dad. He might think it's a second chance for them but she's determined to crush all his hopes and get on his nerves as much as possible.
That's how she ends up at the bar, set on seducing one of his players. It happens to be Spider and he can say whatever he wants, he loved her basically stalking him and showing up at his house unannounced. They have way more in common than they'd think and they make so much sense.

HAIL MARY is quite the opposites attract book, and at first glance, you'll think that the Yin and Yang are surface deep.

But what happens when you peel back the layers and find out that the true opposites in both leading characters are their internal qualities vs their exterior armor?

Tough tattooed football star with a chip the size of California? Check. Total a$$hole on the inside to match the out?

Not even close.

Spider may present the perfect bad boy on paper, but page after page of this delicious novella will have you second guessing everything you think you know about this tough guy.

My favorite part? Watching them come together in such a superficial way, then try to ignore the magnetic pull between them.

And don't forget to turn the fan on, because it is super hot in there.

I highly recommend you take a trip to Bear State University and dive right in!

Emery looked like the prim and proper rich girl looking to slum it with the big time jock for one night. Can't fault man whore Spider/Theodore for taking the opportunity can you? What he doesn't expect is the best sex of his life or walking into his coach when he goes to get rid of the condom.

Emery was abandoned and shipped off to boarding school by her father after her mom died when she was 9. Spider has his own dark history. They should stay apart. They can't stay away from each other. Her dad could ruin his life. His past could ruin her.

I loved the fact that the action of secondary characters weren't left open and justice is served. JB Salsbury is a great author, brilliant at characters and plot. I never fail to be entertained!

I'm honestly loving these books. They're sweet and funny. PG-13 at best, with barely any sex. Just be warned.

"I’ve never felt more sane in all my life. You balance the scales, Kitten. You bring me peace. Silence the demons. You possess my soul."

Theodore/Spider (college football star, rebel, bad childhood) is out with the guys celebrating their latest win and trying to decide which jersey chaser he's going to bang for the night. A sweet, innocent little darling catches his eye and they end up back at her place for some naughty times (which we don't get to really experience). When he tries to stumble to the restroom, buck ass naked, he runs into (drumroll please) his COACH!!! Yikes!!! Turns out, demure little Emery (wild child, hell bent on revenge) isn't so innocent after all. Ya see, her dad (the coach) is a complete DICK. He did something so horrible to Emery (not sexual or physical) that she's determined to make his life hell, now that she's older. She's not above using anyone to achieve her goals.

Turns out a messed-up childhood is something both Theodore and Em have in common. They also have a rebellious side and are terrified of love/being hurt. They have the best courtship (as whacky as it is). Then a freaking perfect HEA. I was completely giddy over it!!!! One of the best endings of a book I've read.

There is sex in these books, but it's super PG-13 (on my grading scale). Why am I ok with that?? Because the characters and comedy are freaking awesome. I highlighted half the book with awesome lines. I absolutely loved both of these characters!!! One thing I really appreciated and approved of was how she handled the situation with her dad. It wasn't the typical way these books go. ALSO - side note - at one point in this book she refers to Theodore as "...a man as sadistic as Theodore Web. But I’m not like other girls. His cruelty excites me. His perversions thrill me..." Ummmmm there's literally nothing in this book to indicate he is any of those things.

We also get introduced to Bex in this book and HOLY SHIT I'm so ready for her story. She's hilarious already!!!

I highly recommend these. They're super short and so funny. It's a multiple read for me.

This one was an odd one for me. I am still wondering how I feel about the story because there are parts I liked and a lot I didn't.
I didn't really like the female main character until halfway through the book. She rubbed me the wrong way from the beginning with her cold and snotty attitude, and the way she used the male character (not that it is ever okay when guys do it to women) was really off-putting. Pretty immature.
She comes to the University to follow her football coach father after he abandoned her at a boarding school. This was shortly after her mom dying at age 9. Now she is back to exact revenge by sleeping with his players and hurt him in the process. She ends up falling for the first guy she sleeps with/uses. Still not convinced that this is a valid way of hurting someone, pissing them off maybe...
There is a bit of rough sex situations (biting, bruising, slight choking) thrown in there for both of them and it was kinda hot but when it is mixed in with mental health issues, it became a turn off.
There were also a few situations that didn't sit well with me either: when she stood naked in front of his teammates after one of their hookups; then she sauntered into the football team dressing room and sat there while they were all naked and offered her "services" (kinda skeevy, if you ask me. If that was a guy in the women's locker room, police would be called and he would be arrested); and then threatening to kill someone's whole family.
The ending was better and more of what I was looking for in this story. Her Dad got was coming to him, she got her HEA and male main character got the partner he wanted. Let's hope the next one is better.

For those of you wondering, this is a continuation from the short story in One More Step. Yes, it includes that entire short story whin this one. However, there is an extra chapter before it. You do not need to read the first book in the series to read this book though. Basically, the only thing that is really mentioned about Spider in that one is that he hates Christmas, which shows up in this book.

I loved reading more of Emery and Spider's story. I'm not sure what it was about these two, but I found their characters very fascinating. The book was well written and I didn't want to put it down. I still cannot believe that I am super excited to read more books by this author!

4 stars!

This is such a great read! Sweet, sexy and edgy with a surprising amount of depth, this is the second book in the BSU Football series, but can easily standalone. It’s a really quick read, but still brings the feels, and I loved it.

Spider and Emery hook up after meeting in a bar. At first glance, you wouldn’t think they would be attracted to each other – he’s a pierced and tattooed bad boy, college quarterback and known for his no-strings hook-ups, while she dresses prim and proper in sweater sets with pearls and silk scarves. But their attraction is immediate, and they have an explosive night together.

Things get complicated when, while making a naked middle-of-the-night bathroom run, Spider runs into Emery’s Dad… his Coach. Awkward! Turns out Emery is a woman on a mission to hurt her neglectful father, and Spider is the tool she has chosen to mess with him.

It may be uncool, but Emery is determined to see her plan through, and she continues to pursue Spider to piss off her father. And even though he’s been told to keep his hands off the Coach’s daughter, Spider is intrigued by Emery. She’s nothing like he imagined, and he is drawn to her hidden ‘bad girl’ side who is bold and feisty, and doesn’t give a shit what anybody thinks. And, never one to be told what to do, he can’t keep away.

Truth is, I want to walk away from her, I just can’t. She’s sin incarnate – I know I shouldn’t indulge and yet I do. Over and over again. There is something about her that calls to me, and I’m determined to figure out what exactly it is.

It’s a fun setup that starts off as one thing, and naturally turns into something else. Spider and Emery holding nothing back from each other, and I loved watching them together! They battle and fight, they flirt and tease, the sexy time is sizzling, and the sweet moments are full of emotion. And I loved the way they impact each other’s lives. They both have a lot of pain from their childhoods and Spider has a battle on his hands to win Emery’s heart, but their journey is beautifully written and I was feeling everything along with them, and as they truly open up and get to know the ‘real’ part of each other, their fall absolutely stole my heart.

“I’m afraid once you really get to know me, you’ll leave me.”
“I
know you. And I’ve never wanted you more.”

Like I said, it’s a quick read, but it’s got great character development and a whole lot of heart. I was completely sucked in to the story, and I finished this one with a huge smile on my face.

4 stars!

The lack of backstory really hurt this book. Was Emery’s dad a jerk for what he did? Yeah, sure. But what little we’re given is not enough to paint him as a giant a**hole deserving of Emery’s (and later Spider’s) total hatred. I didn’t really see Emery as broken, but more of a brat, really. She was mean and b*tchy and a little entitled. And, honestly I started feeling a little bad for her dad toward the end. And Spider...while we were given a little more of his history it still wasn’t much. Even though the story was told in dual POV I really felt like we never really got to know him. I can’t say I particularly liked or disliked him. All in all I really couldn’t get myself to really care how Emery and Spider’s relationship ended up.

As another reviewer wrote - this was a tricky one to review as there are parts that I liked and parts that I didn't.

Overall, it was an easy read. Syntax was good.

I didn't like the fast forward on the relationship and thought the issues with the father were skimmed over and then rushed at the end. I felt as though it could have been fleshed out more.

I will read the first in the series and am looking forward to Bex's book.

This seemed like a book that was slapped together in a pinch. And it's not even the last in the series. It's the second. Emery was just a horrible person, and her dad was written like an evil villain and his "bad side" came out of nowhere. I just wasn't into this one at all.

Awwww Spider and Emery are kinda cute in a weird dark way. Is that possible? Don't know but i think they are!

Both Spider and Emery have pasts to overcome. They have cold exteriors they show to the world but when they're with each other they can't keep up the act.

I loved Emery. She's a psycho in a twin set! I love her! I really felt for her when you find out her past. I had hope through most of it that her dad might come good but lifes no fairlytale and he didn't unfortunately. Luckily she found Spider. I loved reading her inner thoughts. So complex but she unravels for him as the story goes on and it was intriguing and fasinating to read.

Spider is the opposite to All American Football star but somehow it fits him too. Heartbreaking back story, circumstance made him what he is. Dark and untrusting but to those closest to him, i just wanted to hold him! When Emery piques his interest you see the little boy wanting to be loved come out. Never having anyone to care, it made my heart squeeze when he would say "i've never had anyone..." to lots of things you'd take for granted. Like being held or some to support him or be proud of him. Gah i loved him!

When these two are drawn to each other the heat burns the pages but its their kindred spirit that cements them together and really makes you care they get their happy ever after.

I was surprised how the story ended. They're so young! But ya know what?! It was totally them! Unpredictable but normal. Shocking but not. They're both contradictions and i love that!

Loved everything about the story. The supporting characters are great. Fantastic to see more or Carey and Ro and i can't wait to get to know the rest of them! Up next is Loren and Bex. Unlikely pairing but reading the teaser at the end i know i'm gonna love em! Think Bex might be my girl!

LOVED

Part of this book was in the anthology I just read, One More Step. Every author had the same sentence to start with and none of them were alike. I love anthologies because I am introduced to new authors and while most are complete stories, there are a few that are snippets of actual full length books like Hail Mary here. While I was sad it didn’t have a proper ending, I was delighted to have a whole book dedicated to Spider and Emery so it was most definitely a win for me. *Just a quick side note…Is Emery the IT name right now because this is like the 4th book I’ve read recently that the heroine’s name is Emery. It’s just a bit odd because usually names don’t seem to repeat. But I digress.

This book is about Spider, a football player and Emery, the coach’s daughter. Both Emery and Spider are jaded from the things they have experienced in their lives but after Emery uses Spider as a weapon to piss off her dad, they see a likeness in each other that opens them both up to the idea of something more.

From reading the part I did in the anthology, I thought this was going to be the typical college romance but I was wrong. This had more going for it than I initially thought and it was not predictable. I’ve found books like this are usually tied up in nice little bows at the end and while this does have a HEA, it didn’t sugarcoat the rest of what was going on. It was realistic and I liked that aspect a lot. I liked this book so much that I’m going to read Bex’s story and maybe Rowan’s but definitely can’t wait to read more by this author. Thank you anthology 💗

So I randomly came across this story in an anthology Colleen Hoover published w dozens or authors.
(Just One Step). The anthology included the first couple chapters and I instantly fell in love with it, so downloaded the full book and read the entire thing last night and today! It’s part of a series but can be read as a stand alone.
This author is now on my to be read list!

.
This romance starts out as everything but a romance you’d expect , and turns into you the love story that we all look for and crave when we read a book like this!
Both hero and heroine are very rough and Abrasive, anti relationship .. the hero reminds me a lot of Hardin Scott ( After series ) initially .
.
Highly recommend, a quick , hot and 5🌟 read!
.
.

Letting him go proves much more difficult.

Coach warned me to stay away from his daughter.

At first glance Emery is the farthest from what I would consider my type—sweater sets, pleated slacks, and a boarding school pedigree. Ignoring her should’ve been easy. I tried. I really did. Some people are worth ruining lives for, even if one of those lives is my own.

Hail Mary
By: JB Salsbury
📚💕⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️💕📚

Two broken too Love!!!

I’m such a huge fan of JB Salsbury and her writing. The writing is flawless, and the words are so captivating, the plot had so many twists and turns and none that I was expecting, and many shocking moments. I really enjoyed this book and it kept me engrossed throughout. I really loved the characters and the way they interacted with each other. This is a fun, hot, romantic must read book and I would definitely recommend this book to anyone.

This book has everything I love in a book. Then you add that it's beautifully written and believable. It is easily a five star read. Written in dual POV my personal favorite this story flows so incredibly well that the next thing you know your 80% into the book and loving every second of it. Perfectly imperfect for each other.

Spider is the QB of his college football team. He is every parents worst nightmare in terms of relationship material and that’s exactly why Emery has her sights set on him.

Emery is the coaches daughter, and to say their relationship is non existent is an understatement. When she is forced to move in with her dad she makes it her mission to drive him insane, and to do that, she plans on going after his star QB.

I don’t want to give too much away because there are definitely parts of this story I didn’t see coming but on paper, these two shouldn’t work. She is cardigans and pearls and he is tattoos and muscle cars. But sometimes the outside doesn’t match the inside and on the inside, these two are perfectly imperfect for each other.

Loved this book and can’t wait for the next one.
