False Start

Holy mother-forking shirtballs.

I shouldn’t know what my best friend’s trouser snake feels like. I shouldn’t but after waking up naked in his bed with IT pressed against me, I do. So, even though nothing happened between us, I promptly freak out. Silently, of course, because I don’t want to risk waking him up.

And now I have a problem.

For the past six years, I’ve been perfectly content looking the other way every time I see Hudson running across the football field in those tight pants or walking around our house shirtless, but now I’m noticing everything. Especially the way he looks in those jeans.

And he’s not looking at me like someone who’s just a friend.

So when he suggests one night of no strings fun to get it out of our systems, I’m powerless to say no. And then everything will go back to normal.

Or at least that’s the plan.

One too many margaritas leads to Natalie Fitzroy waking up with her best friend’s naked “beaver basher” pressed against her bare back.

Tired of fighting his attraction to Natalie, Nashville Aces star, Hudson Prince, gives in to temptation when the tequila does the talking.

False Start is laugh out loud funny and steamy AF - a hard combination to pull off. And OMFG!! You really do learn something every day. For instance, I had no idea there were so many names for the 🍆.

Beaver basher
Sexcaliber
One-eyed trouser snake
Baloney pony
Meat sword
Anaconda
Tube snake
Pig in a blanket

A perfect light, quick read!

I ENDED this shiet..... I think the author was trying to be funny? She wakes up naked with her friend and calls his penis a flesh flute? 😬😬😬😬😳😐 Ew. No.....that's trifling

Then they have a double date where they decide to sleep with each other ONE TIME while LIVING together and then itll.all go back to normal......😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂👀😬😂😂😂😂😂😂 dafuq. No one NO ONE no onnnnnnnnnneeeeeeeeeee (calling Alicia keys!!!!) Thinks this way. No one thinks that putting your penis in the vagina of a friend will be normal and all will be perfectly normal.after. I know this is fiction, but this is not realistic nor plausible and to talk this way is just....trifling.

"One night, Natalie.” “One night?” I repeat slowly, his meaning not sinking in. “That’s all I’m asking for. One night to explore whatever is physically happening between us and then we can go back to normal. Back to being friends"

what in the helllllllllllyalllllllllll...... 🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦🤦😐😐😐😐😐😐 sigh.

This book had angst, emotion, laughter and spice. It’s great for a short, spicey pallet cleanser between books.

Natalie and Hudson have been best friends for 6 years. After waking up next to each other in bed, they both agree to have one night together then go back to being friends. But of course, it changes everything.

I did cringe a few times while reading this. The main times being the heroine using many awful/cringe names for his🍆

If you’re looking for a fast-paced, best friends to lovers romance then check this out.

This is the perfect friends to lovers novella. It’s laugh out loud hilarious at parts, with steam coming off the pages. Hudson and Natalie’s chemistry is undeniable and so addictive to read.
I absolutely fell in love with these two. Hudson with his big heart, all the feels, and that dirty mouth, and Natalie with her hilarious nicknames and reactions!
It’s a quick read that kept the smile on my face at all times if it didn’t make me laugh out loud!

Natalie Fitzroy and Hudson Prince have been best friends for six years. Now they’re roommates, and Hudson is one of the most important people in her life. Natalie never wanted to do anything to risk that, but apparently Drunk Natalie had no such qualms. As for Hudson, he’s been in love with Natalie since he met her, but he’s convinced that he’s been put so far in the permanent “friend zone” that he doesn’t stand a chance. When Natalie and Hudson agree to a single night together, neither could’ve known that it would change everything.

Oh. My. God. Melissa Ivers is one of my favorite sports romance writers ever, and “False Start” exceeded all my expectations and more!!! In this short and steamy novella, we have two best friends and roommates who have been dancing around the way they feel about each other for a while now. Natalie and Hudson’s chemistry is extremely obvious, and since their friendship was already so strong, it’s also super intense. I loved everything about this novella and Natalie and Hudson’s love story.

Natalie. I loved her personality! This story had me laughing the whole way through, and a huge part of that had to do with reading the chapters that were from her POV. I think Natalie is super smart, super pretty, and super sweet, but she also has that hint of awkwardness to her that really helps make her a relatable character. Hudson. Oh my gosh, I can’t even begin to say enough good things about this man! Hudson is a sweetheart, and I loved the way he constantly tried to put Natalie first. It’s very obvious how much he cares about her, and I’m so happy that they found their way to each other. I completely recommend!

Natalie Fitzroy has been best friends with professional football player Hudson Prince for the past six years, but things take a turn one night when they go out for half-priced margaritas at their favorite Mexican restaurant and accidentally wind up in bed together, naked. The next morning, Natalie escapes before Hudson wakes up; she may not remember exactly what happened the night before, but she knows enough to be terrified that they've just ruined their friendship. Things are different for Hudson, who's had feelings for Natalie ever since they met. After a disastrous double blind date, he finally convinces her to give him a single night to explore their newfound physical connection, but will they really be able to go back to being just friends after that?

This fast-paced, funny, and sweet yet steamy story was an absolute delight! Natalie and Hudson had fantastic chemistry and I loved them as a couple. I also enjoyed catching up with Natalie's other best friend, Violet, and brother, Donovan, from "Summer Hate," as well as meeting a few of Hudson's teammates. I'm really looking forward to getting to know them better in the upcoming Nashville Aces series.

I highly recommend "False Start" for all contemporary/sports romance and romantic comedy fans and look forward to whatever Melissa Ivers writes next.

This is not something I would normally read. I’m not a huge sports person and typically I prefer the farthest thing was reality (since every day life can suck, ya know) but I’ve been pretty desperate for novellas lately. They have been itching a spot I didn’t know I needed.

Overall, this was satisfying. I don’t usually look for plots in novellas mainly because the story isn’t long enough to give it any true depth. So it usually leaves the author with writing about jealousy or not being ready to take the “jump” or so to speak.

Also. I’m looking for heat and romance. Mainly heat. That’s why I picked up a 60-100 page short story. Skip the dramatics, please. This, of course, tried to have a small plot which the reason I gave it a three.

The heat and dynamic between the two characters was great. I even kind of enjoyed the sports aspect. The little drama between them wasn’t bad, it’s just a preference on my part. So if you don’t mind that, you will probably love this. There wasn’t anything technically wrong with this. It’s a personal opinion on this one.

Natalie has two of the best friends, Violet and Hudson. Hudson and Natalie have been best friends for the last 6 years that started while in college at a bar as they both were dealing with cheating exes. Now 6 years later Natalie wakes up sleeping next to Hudson and unlike any other time that had happened, this one seems to mean so much more. She has tried to keep him strictly in the friend zone, but truly wants to be so much more with him. Unknown to her Hudson feels the same way. He hated being in the friend zone, but figured that Natalie never saw him for more than that. As they stumble through if they can be more than friends, we get some laughs and witness just how amazing it could be for them.

This is a fun novella that offers friends finding out that they no longer need to hide how they truly feel. It is not smooth sailing, as there are always bumps in the road, but when they figure it out their match is a perfect touchdown!

Natalie and Hudson have been friends and roommates for six years and all it took was one night and one too many margaritas to change their dynamic.

There is no denying the chemistry between Natalie and Hudson. They have a solid foundation of friendship and they are both attracted to each other. Though right away Natalie put Hudson in the friendzone and that isn’t a zone that Hudson wants to be in, but he also doesn’t want to change their friendship and share his true feelings.

This was a fast paced story, but enjoyable from start to end and filled with some spice.

If you’re looking for a friends to lovers, sports romance this is one to check out.

Just finished my ARC copy of Melissa Ivers novella, False Start.

If you follow my blog, you'll see that I have reviewed a few of her other books, all worthy of a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ rating.

False Start is no exception! What I truly love about Melissa is how she tells a story that gets right up in your feels. Novellas sometimes feel too quick, or maybe lacking in detail or emotion, because they are meant to be short stories. Not Melissa's novellas. She weaves tales that are full of emotion and that leave you satisified even though it's a shorter story than a regular contemporary or sports romance would be. You're immediately invested in her characters, and you feel every single bit of what they are going through.

I can't wait for you all to get your hands on this Nashville Aces novella, and fall in love with Natalie and Hudson! False Start releases on September 26th!

“𝐼𝒻 𝓌𝑒 𝑜𝓃𝓁𝓎 𝑔𝑒𝓉 𝑜𝓃𝑒 𝓃𝒾𝑔𝒽𝓉, 𝐼 𝓌𝒶𝓃𝓉 𝓉𝑜 𝒻𝑒𝑒𝓁 𝑒𝓋𝑒𝓇𝓎𝓉𝒽𝒾𝓃𝑔.”

False Start is a quick, funny, steamy sweet read.

Hudson and Natalie have been best friends for a long time. Despite having feelings for one another, they have never told each other. Until they agree to have one night together on the condition that they return to being friends afterward, but can they have just one night together? Will they be able to go back to being just friends?

Hudson is a dirty talker, and he 😻slaps.

The number of nicknames for Hudsons 🍆 had me laughing. ( I counted at least 8).

Melissa writes some of the best novellas. For such a short story there still is a lot of steam and laughs. Hudson and Natalie have been best friends for a few years now. But what happens when they cross that line? Can they keep their friendship or do they even want to continue being friends?

Natalie had me laughing so hard! Her internal dialogue was hilarious and all the different ways she names Hudson’s d!ck had me seriously laughing hard!

Natalie and Hudson! Swoon! I loved their story! This is a fast paced sports romance full of best friends to lovers, roommates, one-night, and football. This book made me swoon and laugh all int eh same scene.

this is a perfect friends to lovers book and I 100% fell for these two. They have amazing chemistry and they are comfortable with each other. That problem comes from the years for friendship but I think that makes for a beautiful relationship they can build. And when their feelings are finally exposed… swoon! I live for this!

I 100% recommend this beautiful love story!

i did not realize this was part of a spin off to another book of Melissa ivers.

It was short and quick i wasn't super invested because I didn't know the characters and was under the impression that it would be about the footfall team of Rhett Remington (from the devils series) brother.

It was not. So my mistake!

it was good and fast nothing more.

If you need a light, and fluffy rom-com, pick this up. It's a short, sweet, steamy and hilarious novella that is the perfect in-between book or before bedtime book. Natalie and Hudson fumbled a lot as they worked out how to become more than friends after a steamy night together. This is part of a multi-author series but can be read as a standalone. These MC's are secondary characters from Melissa Iver's other book, Summer Hate.

I didn't realize how short this book was when I started it and I finished it in about 20 minutes. HOWEVER, I was giggling and laughing for all 20 minutes. It's a cute little short story with literally four scenes total:

-wakes up from drunk makeout session between two BFFs who live together
-goes on double date, both end up jealous and agree to a one night stand
-next morning blows up, he moves out
-she finds him at practice and confesses her love to him and they end up HEA

Short, sweet, cute, whatever. Good spice at least

Absolutely love this one! Wonderful, short, quick and easy read.

Hudson and Natalie meet in college and became friends, they moved in together. Everyone except Natalie could see Hudson was madly in love with her. Natalie wakes up after a night of drinking naked in bed with Hudson. He is pressed up against her ass and is cupping her breast. She leaves his bed and rushes back to her bedroom, only to hear her phone ringing. She rushes out of her room to grab her phone so it doesn’t wake up Hudson. Her friend Violet is calling her and asks her why she is out of breath. When Natalie tells Violet what happened she goes into a laughing fit. Later that night Hudson and Natalie are set up on separate double blind dates but they are meeting their dates together. Natalie’s date can tell she’s not into the date and wants to make Hudson jealous so he tries to help her. Hudson date tries to kiss him and he gets offended. Natalie rushes to the ladies room when it happens and Hudson runs in after her. She tells him she wants to know what it’s like to kiss him and he tells her he wants to kiss her. They agree to go back to their dates, but they start kissing. He asks her if she’ll give him one night to get this out of their system. They’ll go back to being friends after the one night is over, she agrees to one night. They leave the restaurant and before the are home Natalie has Hudson cock out and is sucking him off, she tells him she bets she can get him off before they get home. When they get home she tells him he won. They go inside their home and he strips her out of her dress then lays her on the counter, telling her he didn’t get his dessert. He goes to the fridge and pulls out a can of whipped cream and sprays it along her inner thighs. He tells her to hold her legs open for him, then licks the cream off of her. He sprays more cream and licks her the length of her slit. He sucks on her until her eyes roll to the back of her head and she is seeing stars. He asks her if she would like to go to his bed or hers and she tells him his. He sling her over his shoulder and carries her to his bed. He tosses her onto his bed and unbuttons his jeans, she takes over for him pulling his cock free. He begins to kiss her working his way down, as his hands slide down her body. Her slick arousal coats him as she wraps her legs around his hips and rubs herself on him. He lines himself up to her entrance and slides into her. His keeps his pace slow, and she tells him she needs him. As he increases his pace his thrust are long and deep. He empties himself inside her, and doesn’t let go of her, leaning forward and pressing foreheads together. They don’t fall asleep until the sun is peaking over the horizon, their time is running out. Hudson wakes with Natalie snuggled up against him. When she wakes she stretches out rolling to face him. He asks her how she is feeling and she tells him a little sore. Her phone rings and he grabs it from the nightstand to see its one of his teammates, for a booty call. She answers the phone and his heart breaks, but he has to let her go that was the plan, only one night. He never realized how deep his feelings for her went, but he needs to get his feeling back on track for her before he loses her completely. When she hangs up the phone after telling Liam to loose her number, she finds Hudson packing his things. He tells her it would be best if he stayed with a teammate for a couple of weeks. She asks him what’s going on, he tells her he needs some time to reset things and remember how to be her friend. He tells her he’s been in love with her for the past six years and last night meant everything to him. She can’t believe he’s been in love with her for the past six years and hid it from her. Hudson heads to Bronson’s home and stays in his guest room. His friend tells him he needs to wait for Natalie to come around and if she doesn’t then he knows where he stands. Natalie heads to Violets home and stays on her couch, but then she returns home. Violet asks her what is the matter with her and Natalie tells her the whole story. Violet tells her everyone seen the way Hudson looked at her even her brother seen it. Her brother, Donovan tells her Hudson would never do anything to hurt her. Violet tells her she can’t tell her she doesn’t have feelings for Hudson because they all know she does. She tells her he’s put his heart on the line for her is she willing to do the same. Natalie heads to the stadium and waits for practice to be over. Some of the other players start to talk to her until Hudson comes and finds her. She tells him she is sorry that he had to hide his feeling from her for so long and too blind to notice. She asks him if they can start the whole thing over again, no one night, a real relationship, a real chance. He asks her to be clear so he know what she is saying. She tells him she wants to have a romantic relationship with him. She tells him she loves him and he asks her to say that again. He tells her he loves her so much. A few weeks later they wake in each others arms, she asks what time it is. They are late getting up and need to make breakfast, Bronson is coming over after letting Hudson stay with him for a week. They get to the kitchen and get busy making waffles, scrambled eggs and bacon. The door bell rings and Bronson comes with Ryan and Gunner, both not looking to happy to be there. Hudson tells Natalie he’ll show her how much he loves her when the guys leave. She tells him if he’s lucky she’ll let him. Bronson tells them he’s hungry and Hudson tells her he is too, he’s always hungry for Natalie.

“If I’m only getting one night to touch my best friend, then I’m going to f***ing make sure I ruin her for any other man. Just like she’s ruined me just by existing.”

Hudson and Natalie are best friends and roommates. They find that they can no longer fight their attraction and feelings for each other, so they agree to have one night together. One night to explore what this is, to give in to their desires and enjoy each other. Once the sun comes up, everything will go back to normal. They will go back to being just friends. But will that really work out the way they expect it to? Grab your copy and find out!!

“One night. It’s just one night. With my best friend. And his giant meat sword.”

I found myself constantly laughing or giggling throughout this book. Natalie is a riot. I love all of the different names she uses to describe his “thing” throughout the book LMAO. And Hudson has his moments too. I just love these two so damn much. If you’re looking for a quick, fun read, this novella is definitely for you.

And let me briefly mention the ending because the way Melissa tied this into her previous Nashville Aces novella, Loose End, is perfection!! If you’ve read it, you will recognize some of the football characters, specifically my man Ryan. This story ends the same morning Loose End does and it leads us beautifully into Ryan’s story, Tight End, which is currently a WIP and I cannot wait for it!! (**COUGH COUGH MELISSA** LOL)

Happy Reading!!

"There needs to be some sort of handbook. What to do if you accidentally throw yourself at your best friend while drunk and can't stop thinking about him... Too specific?
I'd wait in line for that fucking book."

This novella had the right amount of steam, sweetness, and humor, a guy I wish was my best friend, and also the right amount of feeling. I'm a sucker for friends to lovers, and I'm an even bigger sucker for when the guy falls first.
If you're into that too, and you need a quick read, then this one is definitely for you!

"I know I shouldn't. It's wrong. But I want to know what you taste like. What you feel like."
"What if I said I wanted to kiss you too?"

Natalie and Hudson have known each other for six years, and they live together. They're best friends, they love each other, and they've never gone there. OK, they may have fantasized about it, but nothing ever happened, until she drunkenly throws herself at him and they get a taste of what could be.
Suddenly, it's like no one else matters and no one else can compare.

"I never want to see you wearing this dress for anyone else."
"But it's one of my favorites."
"I don't give a fuck. You wear this dress for me and only me."

They decide to give in to what they want for one night. Let me tell you, what a night! I absolutely loved Hudson and how he finally tells her with her body what he's been holding back for so long. And I loved how Natalie literally takes what she wants. Their hunger for each other was hot AF, in true Melissa Ivers style.

"She's fileted me open and left me without a beating heart because there's no doubt after last night, she has mine. She always has and she always will."
What happens once that wonderful night is over? Hudson knows what he wants, but is Natalie ready for it? Is she ready to move beyond friendship and take a chance? Will she need help from her not-so-clueless brother and her best friend?
I wanted to slap her silly because the guy is awesome, a sex god, her friend, and literally... right there for her.

"My best friend, my whole heart - I don't know how I got so lucky,"
Lucky is putting it mildly. The epilogue? That was everything. There was never a shortage of love between these two, it was just misguided. I'm sure they regret wasting the last six years, but I'm positive they'll be making up for it in spades.

Amazing job, Melissa.

This is a quick read and not just because it's a fairly short story. No, it was a quick read because I seriously did not want to put it down. As far as best friends-to-lovers stories go? This one has been added to my list of favorites.

False Start begins as a laugh-out-loud romcom with Natalie waking up in her best friend's bed. She and Hudson have been best friends for six years and she should have never seen all of his "manhood", but now that she has, she's seeing him in a whole new light. Hudson suggests one night of fun before they go back to being "just friends" and how can Natalie say no to that? Come morning though, it's apparent that they've made a mistake and there may be no going back.

Now, let me just tell you...I absolutely ADORED Hudson right from the beginning. He had me hooked from the start and I was totally #teamhudson from that point forward. This book is HOT and it's funny and it's a little bit heartbreaking too. Although it's a short story, there is a lot of emotion packed into these pages, and I couldn't get enough of it. My only complaint? That there wasn't more. Even though their story was perfectly wrapped up within these few chapters, I still found myself wanting to stay in Hudson and Natalie's world for just a little while longer.

If you're a fan of the friends-to-lovers trope, well then, this is the book for you. Loved it!

I absolutely love friends to lovers romances and throw in a hot and sexy football player and you have a hit on your hands. False Start by Melissa Ivers is a fantastic, funny and sweet romance about two best friends Natalie and Hudson that also happen to be roommates. Right from the start, you are hooked because the friendship lines are crossed and the freaking out begins. Natalie and Hudson have that one relationship that is special and wanted by everyone.

When it's two for one margarita night and you happen to love them, well one thing turns into another and you end up in bed with your best friend. Can they keep it as a one-night thing or will it turn into something more? Natalie never wanted to cross that line because she has always been afraid of losing Hudson and he means the world to her. The push/pull tension between the two of them was fantastic as well as the banter that went back and forth. Going in circles about their feeling just added to the tension that had always been there.

I loved Hudson and the sweetness that he showed towards Natalie. He is definitely book-boyfriend material. I cannot say enough about False Start and Ms. Ivers. They both are a must in regards to reading and adding to your TBR list of books and authors.

Title: False Start
Author: Melissa Ivers
Hero/Heroine: Hudson & Natalie
Tropes: Friends to Lovers/Sports Romance

THE GOOD 😀

What a perfect friends to lovers novella this was, and the fact that it made me howl with laughter on the first page made it even better.
Hudson and Natalie have been friends for six years, however after too many margaritas and shots of tequila one night, they wake up in bed together naked as the day they were born.
Even though this is such a short book, the author packed so much into the story and I loved seeing the progression of Hudson and Natalie’s relationship. They had so much chemistry, both as friends and lovers, which I found made it more believable when they took their friendship to the next level.
Funny and steamy, False Start was another really enjoyable offering from this author. I loved reading about Violet and Donovan from Summer Hate, whilst a big part of me is also hoping that Bronson gets his own story (no pressure though).

THE BAD ☹️

Too short, would have happily read more chapters about this couple. I know it was a novella, but still.

Thank you to the author for providing me with a copy of this to read. This is my honest review.
