19th century. After refusing Darcy’s insulting proposal, Elizabeth Bennet married George Wickham… A decision she came to bitterly regret. Three years later, she is a widow, and somewhat cynical about love. Darcy has never forgotten her. And one evening, he meets Elizabeth again during the glittering whirlwind of an elegant London ball...
21st century. After rejecting Darcy’s passionate, but obnoxious declaration of love, Elizabeth Bennet dated George Wickham for three years. Worse decision ever. Now she is single and certainly not in the mood for romance. Darcy has never forgotten her. One night, he meets Elizabeth again at a raucous party in Bingley’s elegant London flat…
Two stories, two time periods, intricately connected and woven together into the same, timeless love story…
Parallels I wasn’t far into this when I realized I’d recently read the unpublished version. This is a very good short story that has Elizabeth and Darcy reconciling after a few years apart while Elizabeth was with Wickham. It goes back and forth between the 19th and 21st centuries, thereby being both a Regency and modern story. I really liked this one.
Technical note: In the KU version I borrowed, the line spacing goes a bit wonky in some sections. Also, some additional glyphs would have been appreciated between scenes flipping between centuries. Some were included, but not always, which made it a bit confusing to follow at times.
I was ready to not like this story. The conceit of juggling of the same couple in two different times. And yet I was drawn in to their realities fully and completely. I generally dislike modern versions of PandP and I really don’t like when Lizzy and Wickham are together. Today, I was ok with both.
What is their connection? It doesn’t seem to be magic and it doesn’t seem to be science. Maybe two universes gently spinning and just nudging each other. A very small help for both of Our Dear Couples. Is it an accident or can true love impact us more than we know.
I think this story deserves your attentions, you readers of this review.
This variation plays out on two timelines. On both of them, Elizabeth is lately out of an unpleasant relationship with Wickham, and meets Darcy at a party. He is still interested... In the modern timeline, Darcy takes an unknown pill and gets high. The two timelines converge with somewhat confusing results. It was an interesting short variation. I like the author's writing style. There are a number of very apt expressions. Steam level was kissing, but yeah, alcohol and illegal drugs so you, reader, be an adult.
Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy in parallel timeline, modern and regency, where she initially chose Wickham. Now they are meeting face to face again with many regrets and latent feelings for each other. The two timelines see each find their happiness.
I really enjoyed the way the author represents the two presentations of a party but in different eras.
Actually fun and sweet short story. Realm wasn't expecting to like this, but was pleasantly surprised. If you only have a very limited amount of time, this will give you that hea good feeling.
This was sometimes too difficult to follow. I got confused as to what century I was supposed to be in. I didn’t like the back and forth to each century. It was hard to remember where the last century left off and the other began. Not my cup of tea.
Slipping back and forth through time-- Regency Lizzy and Darcy - Modern Lizzy and Darcy - figuring things out and actually learning to communicate. Low angst. Brief tale.
