The Riggs Family #1

Peaks of Color

Rate this book
Hot. Arrogant. Talented.
Jack Deacon’s reputation arrived in my small town before he did.

Leave it up to one of my brothers to hire the biggest photographer in sports and then misread the contract.

Now, the six-foot-sexy, dripping with confidence notorious bachelor is staying in my pool house, calling me beautiful instead of boss, invading my workplace, my personal space…and my thoughts.

In Strutt’s Peak, the mountains are our playground, and we provide the entertainment. When your last name is Riggs, you’re royalty here and that makes me the princess who runs this show. Don’t let that title fool you though, I’ve worked hard and earned my place at the boys’ table.

All it takes to unravel everything I’ve been so focused on is a revealing photoshoot and a ride on a gondola.

It turns out that I’m weak for blue eyes and a set of dimples. More than weak, I’m falling head over high heels for him.

But when family secrets unfold and careers take on a new trajectory, everything falls out of focus. Why did we ever start when it was always meant to end? How do I get over someone I never had any business falling under in the first place?

This is a small town, deliciously spicy standalone romance.

Forever a hopeful romantic, I write deliciously witty and wild characters. My stories range from small-town swoon-worthy men to fiercely powerful families and lead characters who aren't afraid to ask for what they want.

You will always find a little bit of fate, a whole lot of steam, and a wildly romantic ride.

Tropes:
- reformed playboy
- billionaire heroine x famous photographer
- boss x employee
- forced proximity
- small tourist mountain town
- nightmare (H) + comforting (h)
- protective brothers (of the heroine)
- groveling (hero)
- childhood trauma (hero)
- insta lust
- 🦋dirty talk🦋

POV: first person - dual

Type: interconnected stand-alone (book one)

Being the biggest sports photographer has it’s perks… or so Jack thinks. After a contract mishap, Jack has no choice but to room with the famous family who hired him to shoot for their company. What becomes instant lust for the known playboy turns to something neither player expected.

The mountain vibes of Colorado made we want to be anywhere except a place with 100 degree weather. I swear my jealousy was through the roof.

I’m a sucker for the nightmare + comfort trope ESPECIALLY when the heroine is comforting the big tough hero. There’s nothing better than this.

My favorite part by far is THE AUTHOR INCLUDE A COFFEE RECIPE AT THE END OF THE BOOK. This specific coffee is the real star of the book, just saying. And how it comes about…yeah you will swoon.

Onto my reasoning for the minus .75:

I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again. I. HATE. ANGRY. S3X.
Truly despise it. It will never make sense to me. I know there’s a lot of people who enjoy reading it so to each there own, maybe this will convince you to pick it.

I also cannot STAND time skips, it’s stupid no matter how you play it. At least it’s less than a year so i’ll take what i can get.

Besides that, I really enjoyed this book! And bonus points for the pretty cover bc I’m vain like that and totally judge a book by its cover. I’m not sorry about it.

Both MC are immature and stand in their own way.
There was no reason for them to be separated for that amount of time. It wasn’t for either one to accomplished something in that time (on page). While she started out as boss and entrepreneur, that fell off completely and her only characteristic mentioned is missing him.
There was no growth, they just saw each other again and said I love you.

This was average but great for a debut novel. It reached a part where it was getting a little bit ridiculous and cringe 😬.

I got sucked right into this pretty quickly, but as time went on I had a hard time pushing through. There were some things that popped up past the halfway point that felt like unnecessary drama adds, and the third act challenges this couple faced felt a little ridiculous and drawn out to me.

My interest was peaked for Giselles story though, so I’ll be continuing on with the series.

I have been sleeping on this series, y’all, and I am here to officially apologize for my actions.

I picked up Peaks of Color after receiving a copy of the book at the Romance Readers Retreat and it did not disappoint. I am a sucker for a workplace romance, especially when it features a strong, independent FMC and Everly embodies that 100%. While Jack never intended to settle down, it was obvious that Everly was the kind of woman he needed and I was rooting him on as he overcame some ghosts of his past. His big declaration at the end had me swooning and I love, love, loved the epilogue.

I’m interested to see what lucky ladies catch the eye of Everly’s brothers as the series continues. They’re an interesting bunch and I have no doubt their journeys to love will be nothing short of entertaining.

RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐.5
STEAM: 🔥🔥🔥

I would read this book over and over again just to experience the boss lady that is Everly Riggs.

The vice president of her family's expanding business, Everly is focused and undeterred. That is until one of her charming brothers hired a sports photographer with an ego as big as the mountains in Strutt's Peak. Sure, he can back it up with his portfolio and might be all kinds of hot, but unfortunately, Jack Deacon knows it and knows it well.

When Jack has to stay with Everly while working for the Riggs, sparks start to fly, and it's not just from them locking horns.

How is this a debut novel? Victoria Wilder does a phenomenal job of building the Strutt's Peak universe and making us fall in love with the Riggs Family, immediate and adopted. Jack is the kind of bad boy that you know in your heart you should avoid but cannot seem to resist. There is more to him than meets the eye, however, and it is great to see that character development unfold. He meets his match in Everly; confident and smart, she is not one to push around. I absolutely love that Everly does not lose her shine or dominance as she engages with Jack and that Jack respects that authority and honors her boundaries.

I adore enemies-to-lovers reads, because that first banter (should) set off a delicious sizzle that grows as we turn each page. This book has that and more. It slowly builds the tension between Jack and Everly, making the payoff of incredibly spicy scenes so. worth. the. wait.

I am also in love with the ensemble cast. Everly's brothers are protective without being overbearing, and I cannot wait to see if they each get their own story. Everly's friend Giselle also stole the spotlight for me, and I hope, hope, hope that she gets her own book, too.

Hat's off to Victoria Wilder for a fantastic debut. If you love enemies-to-lovers, small town romances, this is a must-read for you.

** I am voluntarily reviewing an advance copy of this book. Thank you to Victoria Wilder and Peachy Keen Author Services for providing an ARC. **

Please, PLEASE stop what you’re doing and start reading this series.

This story follows Everly (fashion designer for her family’s sports business) and Jack (a photographer), who is hired to come and work for Everly and her family’s business to help update their image a bit.

Everly shares a humongous, beautiful, Colorado home with her 3 brothers, Law, Michael, and Henry and when lodging falls through for Jack her brothers offer up their pool house (Everly’s studio) to Jack to stay in.. which means forced proximity.. and holy hotness.

The tension is HEAVY and Jack will make every ounce of feminism leave your body.. and I am a okay with that because DAMN.

Victoria writes the family dynamic in all of her books SO WELL and will leave you NEEDING to know so much more about the brothers.

You will not only be kicking your feet like a school girl and sweating from the spice, but also laughing your ass off from the banter between the family members and close friends.

Five stars all the way! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is an ARC Review for the Debut Novel, “Peaks of Color” by @authorvictoriawilder

I was introduced to this story by @hopelesslysmuttyreads who did an ARC read and just told me how amazing this debut novel was! @authorvictoriawilder reached out and I just knew I had to read! This wasn’t just a debut novel, but a debut into a world you will get sucked into!

Strutt’s Peak is a close knit Colorado town home to Riggs Outdoor Sports & Apparel. The Riggs family is the focus of this interconnected world. Everly, the only girl out of 4 children, is strong willed, business minded and next in line to run the family business. Everly along with her three brothers run different areas of the business and are trying to grow it into something bigger than they ever dreamed. This is where Jack comes in. Jack is a low key Billionaire who hides his wealth and takes pride in being a well sought after photographer. He is tasked with helping rebrand the company and as you can only imagine this sets up some firework worthy banter between Everly and Jack.

There is angst, there is banter and there is dirty talk by both Everly and Jack. To me this is a bit of a reverse grumpy x sunshine at points and it works so well! Both Everly and Jack go through major events separately and the reality of what they could be becomes a hinderance despite them never having felt this passion and love before.

It was beautiful watching them decide what their futures would look like separately and together. I felt these were very real world scenarios which allowed me to connect to these characters.

The beauty of this novel is that you also meet many of the family members and friends around town. I’m looking at you Henry and G👀.

I’m so excited to see what comes next for these characters as I am now invested! What a phenomenal job for a debut novel!

Tropes: small town, forced proximity, billionaire, miscommunication, reformed playboy

Triggers: childhood trauma, alcoholism

Everly Riggs is the headstrong daughter of the Riggs family, helping her father build their outdoors company into what it’s become.

Jack Deacon is a famous photographer who has been hired by the Riggs family for their latest ad campaign and while he’s in town he needs a place to stay. With a local film festival in town, the Riggs family puts Jack up in Everly’s workspace and their constant run-ins lead to them acting on their chemistry.

Jack’s sister and nephew also live in the small town, running a local coffee shop. There’s just a lot of things all happening at once, it starts to feel a little cluttered.

This is the debut novel for this author and there’s a lot to like about the story. Everly is strong and extremely hard working, Jack is talented and dependable. But ultimately I don’t feel like I really knew either of them well. This isn’t a story that’s going to last in my brain for long, and while I’m intrigued with the pairing for book 2, I don’t feel the need to jump into that story. I felt like it was a lot of “tell” without the “show.”

Also, Jack is like randomly revealed to be a billionaire at the very end. I was super confused where that came from. Felt like an excuse for part of their ending to make sense.

If you hate the miscommunication/break-up for months trope and never openly communicating… this might not be for you.

It’s obvious that Elsie Silver is an influence for Victoria Wilder. Small town backdrop, sibling series, strong female characters, a bit of heaviness, single dad, lots of steam… but that’s about where the similarities end. The peaks series is set in Colorado and this first installment focuses on the only sister and female family member of the Riggs family. I liked the first 60% of the book even though I was completely unconvinced by the set up (why would a world class photographer accept sharing the pool house?) - and then it just got more ridiculous. I know I should be able to say more but I don’t have the energy. There is not much of a story, in my view, and a lot of it doesn’t quite make sense, esp the latter part of the book. The reason for the third act breakup was not convincing and then the resolution is way too easy (there’s also a bit of at time jump). There is a lot of steam and this is where I’m giving the stars - it’s nice to see a confident woman in the sex scenes.

There is m potential for the series and I’m actually very curious about the next installment as the groundwork for Ev’s best friend and her grumpy brother, Henry, has been laid pretty thick in this book and it looks like it could be good.

So don’t come with high expectations for what I think is a debut book for Wilder; I do think it will get better with every installment. At least that’s what I’m telling myself.

Finding, reading, and getting to know indie authors is my jam. I’m so disappointed that it took me so long to start Victoria’s books. Peaks of Color absolutely blew me away. The way everything is described, especially the location (and spicy scenes, let’s be real), were some of the most top notch that I’ve ever read. I could easily picture and place myself in the story’s setting. The story was engaging, not predictable, and relatable. I’ve fallen in love, and I can’t wait to read what’s next from Victoria Wilder!

Peaks of Color by Victoria Wilder (The Riggs Family Book 1)

⭐️⭐️
🌶️🌶️🌶️.5

When Everly Riggs is stuck sharing a space with a photographer, she could not be more pissed at her brothers for conjuring such a last-minute plan. However, it might work in her favour when she sets her eyes on the infamous Jack Deacon. Jack and Everly immediately have an indisputable attraction. Whilst Jack has always been enamoured by the accolades Everly has brought to the Riggs Outdoor Sports & Apparel empire, Everly is shaken by the new confident, undeterred presence.

The ‘Peaks of Colour’ prologue is a stark contrast from the contemporary writing Victoria Wilder uses for the rest of the novel. In the prologue, we are introduced to two children—with the eldest protecting his younger sister from the wrath of an abusive stepfather. Its content is confronting and dark with the only escapist element being the colour ‘orange’ flashing, providing solace to the fearless older sibling. Age, gender and names—are all absent from the prologue. Hence, when readers are introduced to Everly and Jack, they are forced to conclude that the dark beginnings were from the perspective of Jack Deacon’s POV.

The novel’s basis is the love story of Everly and Jack. The plot sort of hints towards it being a forbidden romance due to the business nature of their relationship, but we soon find that is not at all an issue. Therefore, readers are privy to the steamy affair between the two as both attempt to figure out their independent struggles. As the novel progressed, the writing became repetitive, the scenes lost their originality and nuance. It came to a point that if a reader missed a whole chapter, no integral part would’ve been skipped.

The voice and writing style of this book held it back. The voice of the characters was immature and mimicked one of a college student rather than the adult years of Everly and Jack. Unfortunately, it was difficult to empathise with the characters at all with this voice, which is especially upsetting when hard topics of abandonment and domestic abuse are acknowledged.

Everly’s POV reads like a resume. Instead of the author allowing the reader to experience the career that has consumed the life of Everly, we bear the burden of long narratives, straight dialogue and a recount of the biography of Everly Riggs in Strutt’s Peak. Unfortunately, it immediately establishes a wall between the character and the reader—making it difficult to empathise with her. I believe I would have enjoyed this book a little more if clarity had been given on the characters and setting. It seemed like the author heavily relied on the reader to create their imagery for this novel, hence, it was extremely difficult to curate what Strutt’s Peak was like.

The small town sphere also lacked significantly. Several times throughout my reading it would be mentioned, and completely forgotten soon after. The archetypal charm of invasive townies, close friendships and the backing of a community—did not seem explicit in Victoria Wilder’s storytelling. I do blame the heavy emphasis on the success of Riggs Outdoor as the component that mitigated the community aspect of this novel. The family being wealthy and reaching unattainable heights in the sports industry did not work well with attempted close-knit townspeople, and a small community built for Strutt’s Peak.

There seemed to be a clear dissonance between moments within the book and the reader. I blame it on a lack of integrity in the characters and atmosphere, and I also question if there was an absence of research on world-building. As a reader who has been enthralled by Victoria Wilder’s ‘The Bourbon Boys’ series—this one fell short however, I understand it may be due to its release early on in her career. I give grace that this novel may facilitate an audience who is younger but I was unable to enjoy this novel.

As the ending nears, secrets are availed—specifically in the Beacon family—where Jin and Jack are found to be step-brothers. Jin, who previously had a sexual relationship with Everly, is now protective of her and the two are unable to settle their differences. This plot twist did not feel intentional at all. It was thrown into the book with no awareness, no foundation and amid another secret, Jack’s sister having an alcohol addiction. I’ve never been so blind and confused about a plot in a long time. Everly’s response to Jack’s familial hardship just proved her immaturity once again. Ultimately, the pace of this novel felt very off. Not enough time was given the lack of nurturing Everly and Jack’s relationship before their intimacy, and the default trauma talk were the key mitigating factors to the success of this novel.

PS. At least the spicy scenes were good.

• Small town romance • Reformed Playboy • Self-Assured Successful FMC • Colleague Romance • Just for Now Arrangement •

CW/TW: Child Neglect, Drug/Alcohol Abuse, Parent loss

If I didn’t know this was a debut novel, I never would have guessed! I loved the narration style. This is a semi-slow burn, instant attraction, loaded with pining/tension romance.

In the small mountain town of Strutt’s Peak, the Riggs’ family dominates that tourist attraction market with their outdoors adventure company. Everly Riggs returned home after design school in NYC to prepare to take over the family business, all the while secretly designing the apparel line featured in their store.

The family hires renowned brand photographer Jack Deacon to spend a month in Strutt’s Peak to help them rebrand. Jack’s reputation of playboy precedes him, leading to Everly making up her mind about him before she ever meets him. But when they meet, the attraction is instant for both of them.

Jack stays on the family property in the pool house, which also acts as Everly’s office. When the tension becomes to much for both of them, they enter into a temporary “benefits” arrangement, neither wanting anything more knowing it can’t last. Or can it?

I loved all the characters in this book. The author did an excellent job establishing every side character and making them so interesting that I need to know what happens to them next! It’s a good thing the author has already said this is going to be a character series.

The steamy scenes were so good and the dirty talk was perfect! And I loved Everly’s assertiveness. She’s such a relatable character in her mid 30s and isn’t afraid to prioritize herself. And Jack is a damaged man who is doing what he needs to care for himself: attending therapy. He’s not perfect, but he’s working on himself. And he’s damn sexy.

I really, REALLY did not want to give this only 3 stars, because the beginning was awesome. I loved the firey chemistry between Jack and Everly. They both have a different kind of baggage; Jack has a trauma filled past that has left him reluctant to be vulnerable, and Everly is a highly successful VP of her family's company who struggles with whether she will be able to have it all: a great love and the career she wants, not necessarily the one she has. There is a great cast of side characters including Everly's best friend, Jack's assistant Lucifer, and Everly's brothers who are all adorably loyal and loving, and all bring their unique personalities into the mix.

But, it all falls apart 3/4 of the way through. It seems like a stretch that Jack just happened to land this job in the same town where his sister Kat, and his nephew relocated to own a bookstore, I took it in stride, but then all of the sudden she went off the rails as an alcoholic, forcing Jack to intervene, which brought us to the next weird revelation. While there were hints that Jack and Jin (Everly's former booty call and co-worker) shared some history, the smack in the face that they are (adopted) brothers was just weird, but it also explained how they ALL oddly ended up in this same town since it was Jin's investment in Kat's bookstore that brought her to town.

But the problem is, this doesn't reveal itself over the course of the book. It's one big whammo all at the same time without much foreshadowing. I felt like this book was going pretty good until it kitchen sinked us with plot twists. Of course, all this drama brings on the 3rd act breakup, which also didn't make much sense. Then the dreaded time jump, and super quick reunion. Despite the time jump, it all felt rushed and just odd.

This left a lot of strings dangling, and some uncomfortable ones, at that. What happened to the Riggs' mom? I kept wondering if I missed it. Jack bared his all to Everly, but she didn't reciprocate. What exactly is the Everly's dad's relationship with the town sheriff, who is much younger and gay? I suppose this all sets up for the next books in the series, but if it's intended to read as a standalone in a series, you're left nagging over the dangling threads.

Overall, the beginning was A+, and the smexy scenes were great, aside from the repeated, and I mean repeated, mention of her constantly wet panties, but since the last half was just confusing and kind of took the attention off Jack and Everly, I had to go with 3 stars. It's the first book in the series, so I'm hoping the following books will be better when I return to them eventually.

My first 5 star of 2023!

I absolutely adored this book.

Jack is a photographer hired to shoot for Everly’s family company- Riggs Outdoor Sports & Apparel- that she is the VP of, and he ends up staying in her pool house whilst working there. The moment he and Everly first meet there is an undeniable spark. They try to keep it professional but their chemistry constantly draws them to each other. When things start to move forward, they agree on a fling. But what happens when they both start to catch feelings on something that was supposed to be only temporary?

Strutt’s Peak sounded like such a gorgeous place and I loved Everly’s family and best friend Giselle too- she is hilarious!

Everly is a total badass- strong, independent, ambitious, amazing at her job, creative, kind and loyal. Adored by her brothers.

Jack had a horrific start to life and still carries demons and trauma from his childhood. Something he rarely opens up about, yet he feels so comfortable with Everly that he does start to share with her.

I really loved both characters and was rooting for them the whole way. There were some heartbreaking moments but the ending and epilogue were just beautiful.

Everly is total girl crush material and Jack is definitely a great new book boyfriend!

Peaks of Color is a small town romance set in a tourist mountain town called Strutt's Peak. This is book one of Victoria Wilder's new series and damnit it's so good. This is such an impressive debut novel, and has so much working well. Everly Riggs is Vice President of her family's outdoor company, working alongside her father and brothers, who I think we will get stories for in subsequent books. Everly is a boss bitch with a heart of gold. She's talented, and described as a force of nature. Jack is a photographer hired to help with some branding and he and Everly have a spark of attraction right away. As they slowly give into their attraction and develop feelings, complications arise and we get brilliant tension and believable conflict. This book is full of tropes: forced proximity, boss/employee, small tourist town, and a smattering of enemies to lovers...and the book offers plenty of character insight to set us up for the rest of the series. One of my favourite things about this was many of the descriptions were just poetic and really beautiful. I loved the family dynamics and how protective Everly's brothers were. If you like dirty talk and praise kink, the spice scenes will satisfy you. Victoria knew what we all wanted when she wrote this.

5 stars

CW for past child neglect, parental drug addiction, loss of parents, alcoholism...hopefully I haven't missed any.

Thanks to the author for the ARC. Peaks of Color is out July 14th

Everly & Jack

Stubborn. Frustrating. Endearing. Sweet.

Everly is a strong fierce FMC. She is a leading force within her family’s company and is set to take it over.
Loved reading about how close she is with her dad and brothers.

Jack is a renown sports photographer who is hired by Everly’s brother to help take their marketing a step up.

They both think they want a short term fling. The pull they feel is too strong to be temporary.

I wanted to pull my hair out when they couldn’t see what was right in front of them. And then of course melted when they finally got it right.

The banter was great and had me rolling.
The spicy scenes in this book were soooo good 🥵
I’m also invested in the side characters. Can’t wait for book 2!

For a debut book, Victoria Wilder knocked it our of the park. This story gives us all the feels, tension, and angst you could want. Not to mention the the spice is just right.

Everly is the VP of her family’s outdoor company and a boss bish. Jack is a successful sports photographer, who has been hired to photograph the new clothing line and campaign for the company.

Sparks fly when they met for the first time. Neither is looking for a relationship, and both are fighting their desires. As they start to give in tension mounts and complications arise.

The connection and tension between Everly and Jack is perfect. I enjoyed their characters and the development of their relationship.

I enjoyed the dynamics between Everly and her family. I absolutely loved her brothers and looking forward to their stories.

i should have just read bourbon & lies firsttttr ugh

i feel so bad because i really really wanted to like this book but it kind of fell flat for me. it has all the makings of a good book but i just think it maybe should’ve been 200-250 pgs instead of the 380 pages it is.

i don’t say any of this to be harsh, i know this was an earlier book of hers and i know sooo many people love her new series so I will definitely pick up more books by her especially since I loved her holiday novella too!

we’ll see if the rest of the series improves (maybe, idk if i’ll pick it up)

I adore Victoria’s writing! She writes a spunky, independent FMC so well. Obsessed with this series. Ev + Jack were everything and their dirty talk + chemistry made me squeal.

Read this if you love small town, adventure, photographer + fashion designer, a fierce FMC and spice.
