The Fake Dating Trope

Rate this book
When Lucas Hunt proposes that we fake a relationship to get what we both want, I think it’s the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard.

Yes, I need my car fixed, and yes, he needs to publicly move on from his disaster of a past relationship, but I’m not sure my anxiety or my preference for solitude can handle what he’s asking of me.

After all, as an avid reader and the star employee of Books & Beans, I’ve read enough fake dating trope storylines to know how this ends.

I refuse to be the girl who falls for the guy she’s pretending to be with.

Even though we’re spending all this time together, and I’m getting to know the real version of him, and he’s absurdly nice to look at—

Nope.

Nope. Nope. Nope. Not me.

Definitely not.

…I’m in so much trouble.

While this was a shorter book, I thoroughly enjoyed it. The main characters seemed raw, real, and relatable. They both had family issues happening, which made it feel more honest and raw. I loved FMCs grit for getting out of her home situation and passion for books. She truly pushed hard to be better than her Mom is. I loved the two of them and the multiple discussions and pointed out similarities of bookish terms/tropes. It was a lovely and refreshing read!

A cute, quick read, but could have benefited from diving just a little deeper. The characters didn't feel very developed and there were a lot of plot points that I wish would've been more explored.

It has been a long time since I've enjoyed A book as much as I did "The Fake Dating Trope.".

It was fun, clever and overall romantic but not very sexual. The characters are well crafted and dominate the story.

I highly recommend this pleasant book.

When Lucas Hunt suggests a fake dating arrangement Kate can't believe what she's hearing. Sure, she needs her car repaired and he needs to show his ex that they're truly over. But as the booknerd she is, Kate knows how these books end: with the couple falling in love. And she refuses to be the girl who falls for the guy she's only pretending to date.

Kate and Lucas really have nothing in common. She's the booknerd who works shifts at Books & Beans in between school days, and he's the sport jock who plays baseball for the school team. Kate also needs her alone time, which I definitely can relate to.

"After multiple social interactions and too many sounds, my brain feels like it's gotten sensory overload, and I need this time to recuperate before I face the rest of the day."

But despite being each others opposites they get along great when they meet. It's quite predictable, but I still really enjoy it!

The book is written in first person, from Kate's point of view. I would have liked to have dual POV's, but we actually get to know Lucas well enough, and it's rather easy to imagine what he's thinking. He's both considerate and attentive and he's definitely earned a spot on my book boyfriend list! The author also has a bonus scene you can read, from his POV, and it makes him even more likeable and cute!

As usual, Shore adds some more serious topics into the story as well. Besides Kate's anxiety issues she has to deal with her mother's alcoholism. Lucas' parents are getting a divorce, he's got an ex girlfriend who wants to get back together and his father pressures him on the baseball field. It feels like they both can use some breathing space, and they get that when they're together. This might not be my favorite book by Shore, but I'm still very satisfied!

The story is a really cute romance that could've been better if the characters and the plot had developed a little bit more.

“Life’s just a series of trade-offs, Kate.”

Fake relationship trope is probably one of my favourites when it comes to books so I was genuinely excited to receive this arc and couldn’t wait to get started. But one thing I don't like about books is them being named after a trope or everything happening because of that trope, you know? I feel it's more real when the trope is the only exit the characters have to accomplish their goal.

One thing I enjoyed a lot is Kate’s character, she was very relatable. This books is an easy and light read, so you won't feel it took you too much effort or time to read it. I highly recommed it for a break between heavy trilogies or series. The toned down angst made it better, but I can't rank it more than 3 stars because I'm getting a little bit tired of books being sold as tropes. This was a cute light read, but the plot and characters should've been developed more.

I recently discovered Jennifer's books and honestly, she has shot up to the top of my favourite authors list.

The Fake Dating Trope was a dream. Our main girl, Kate, is an avid reader and her observations are so spot on and so relateable! I found myself falling in love with her practically right away because I honestly saw a lot of myself in her. By the time I reached the end of the book I was ready to fight for her haha~

One thing that I've loved about all of the books I've read by Jennifer is our main characters always develop so beautifully but it's done so naturally and realistically. There's no big, crazy make over like in a romcom or anything but instead the characters find themselves or start on that journey and I just love that.

This story focuses on Kate who ends up fake dating with her classmate Lucas. The best part of this as because Kate is an avid reader, she literally points out the trope to a poor unsuspecting Lucas. (This boy gets his eyes opened to many book related things. When you read the book you'll understand why I'm laughing as I type this🤣)

I honestly could go on and on about how much I loved this book but I could never do it justice. Go pre-order this book before it comes out on September 1st, you won't regret picking up this super sweet story.

This summer I was in the mood to read fresh young adult novels and The Fake Dating Trope has given me that and more.

The story tells us about Kate and Lucas, two totally different people, who reach an agreement to pretend to be a couple in front of their classmates and friends. Lucas needs his ex to stop chasing him and Kate needs to fix her car. This leads them to spend a lot of time together and fall in love little by little.

As I have told you, it is an hooking story, fresh, romantic and with many funny moments, great, especially if you are avid readers and know all the literary tropes.

The characters are different from each other, but both Kate and Lucas carry a difficult family history that I hope you will discover if you give the book a chance.

If you want something that entertains and relaxes you in equal parts, this is the perfect story :)

*This is my honest and voluntary review. Thanks so much to the author for this ARC.*

I surprisingly enjoy this book. I don't tend to gravitate toward young adult romance, but I really like how well-written the characters were. My favorite was Lucas; he was such a perfect guy, and he always knew the perfect things to say and do.
Highly recommend if you want something cozy with low stakes

I mean the title says it all - I'm a huge fan for the fake dating trope and I did enjoy it in this book; I just think there could have been a bit more of the story. I know the trope is the whole theme, but we could've had a bit more as readers. I feel like I didn't fully connect with the characters and the plot was lacking. If we had an extra 100, maybe even just 50 pages I think things could have been exceptionably better.

I will say that even though I didn't fully connect with the characters I adored the way Lucas and Kate had their 'relationship.' It was super fun and seemed so effortless between the two. The humor was also a really nice addition. If you can add humor into a contemporary book...I am sold.

Thank you to Book Sirens and the author for the review copy. All thoughts are my own.

Thank you Book Siren for providing me with an arc of this book! I'm leaving this review voluntarily after finished reading this book😀

Caution : I'm salty in this review. Read my opinion with a grain of salt.

A girl who's not like the other girls meets a boy whose personality is having muscular biceps and playing baseball.

At this stage of my life, I can't decide whether I'm too old for YA romcoms, or they are simply written badly. I didn't pick up this book expecting it to be a masterpiece, but reading one chapter of it made me want to dnf it and never return again.

The reason I finished this is because I've requested an arc (that's on me for picking the book for a pretty cover). I don't like to dnf books altogether, let alone an arc one.

Like I said, the girl is very descriptive about why she's not like the others. And while we are long past that trend, if the author really wanted to bring an "unconventional" character like her, couldn't she show it, instead of describing everything through the girl's narrative?

And why does the boy have to be so gym-level fit and act mature like an adult?! He's a high schooler!! Couldn't his character drawn in a . more realistic way? It's like I'm reading a description from an adult rom-com book, except he goes to school.

Also, the best friends are the most generic best friends in the history of romcoms who are overly excited about the love lives of their friends than their own.

And we REALLY didn't need the unnecessary hatred/dislike towards Sydney. She didn't even do anything harmful, and everyone was just treating her badly??!

I have also noticed the use of the same copy-paste dialogue several times which felt irritating. Like when Lucas Hunt says, "Are you okay?" thirty times in the span of three seconds, it loses its romantic appeal. Then two characters say the exact same line, "Tell. Me. Everything." as a reaction to the same news, which felt a little jarring to me. And finally, the conflicts between the side characters were not well-flashed out...To me, it felt like the writer wrote them because she had to, not because she wanted to.

Pros: Short. If you're looking for a book to finish within hours, this is the book for you.

This book was a super cute read. It was simple and easy and quick. Lucas was adorable and Kate was Uber relatable with her anxiety and social struggles. I liked that they each had family issues going on and we’re there to be strong for one another. Instead of the regular never ending issues between a couple they supported each other through their own personal and familial problems. Lucas planned THE CUTEST date for Kate’s birthday. I really enjoyed how Sydney was nice and understanding for the most part just sad. Instead of the normal mean girl ex cliche.

This book had the bones to make a really great book. It didn’t get all the way there because the characters and interactions just felt a little shallow. Not that they were bad or anything it just could have greatly benefited from diving deeper. Both with moments between Lucas and Kate as well as their family issues so that they felt more like full characters.

Thank you BookSirens for sending me this book!!
Jennifer Ann Shore is now one of my instant buy, for sure! She just write the most beautiful and real young adults novel, that makes that warm feeling to your heart.
Again, this is a cute book about a teenage girl, Kate, who don’t have the easiest life, who meets a teenage boy, Lucas, who also have issues on his own.
Honestly, she writes the perfect types of novel: no drama, no miscommunication, funny, with the loveliest characters and fast-paced.
I can’t wait for her next one!!!

Just too cute!

The plot: well, it is pretty obvious from the name of the book, that it is about a fake dating trope. Meet Kate and Lucas. Kate is an introvert, who avoids crowds at all costs, and has read a lot of romance books, but has never been in a relationship. Lucas is on the school's baseball team, a handsome and popular guy. One day they bump into each other in the library, and so, their story begins.

Is there anything I didn't like about the book? NO. Despite the fact that I'm normally not a fan of overly sweet stories, this one is perfectly aligned and just what I needed at the moment, so I'm not gonna complain.

What I liked:

1. the humor. It is everywhere - in communication between Kate and her friends and their friends, between Kate and Lucas. Their friendly/flirty banter is amusing to follow. Also, for example, the scene when Kate meets Lucas's mother is just hilarious.

2. the characters. All the characters are fairly well-written, some of them could have been given more backstory, but the lack of it did not spoil my reading experience in any way. For example, even if we are not given a lot of information about Kate's mother, she still invokes certain feelings, there is no need for many details.

3. the setting. The fake dating trope is one of my favorite ones in romance books. The reason why Lucas asked Kate to fake-date might not be so serious, but I can kind of see why he wanted to handle it that way. Also, I liked how their relationship evolved throughout the book, and how they got to know each other and care for each other. It is not just pure physical attraction, it is so much deeper. And kudos to the author for that. Lucas and Kate are just so cute!

Content warnings: there is an LGBTQ+ plot line and abusive attitude.

Overall opinion and recommendations: Honestly, I like everything about this book. It is just so sweet and nice. I really enjoyed reading this story and am so glad that I came across it. So I would definitely recommend this to everyone who loves romance and coming-of-age stories with likable characters and a happy ending.

Yikes!

I'm DNFing 20 pages in. I hate to do that. I wanted to continue but I have a feeling if I did this would come out as a 1 star. This was a tell every single detail instead of showing. The girl's narration was beyond annoying. And I hate to be that harsh but I can't say it any nicer. I read a book recently by Shore and if I read this book first I probably would never pick up another one of her books. The writing style is that different.

It was a "I'm not like other girls and this is why..." narration. Also, I really don't like the fact she wrote a teen girl reading smut. I'm in my 30s. I don't want to read about a girl half my age reading something I personally don't think she has the mental capacity to be reading. Especially this girl!

I'm pulling the plug. I will try another Shore novel but if it's anything like this one, I will have to pass.

Although the characters weren't as drawn-out as some of Shore's other characters, I found The Fake Dating Trope to be really fun and sweet. Kate and Lucas made a great romantic pair, but unlike Shore's other books, the rest of the characters kind of floated around. I couldn't remember for most of the book whether Zoe or Daphne was Kate's friend before the two were together, and they blended together most of the time. Besides those four, another character might be mentioned somewhere, but only appeared in two or three other scenes. Overall, this was a fun, cute book, but compared to other books by the author, it felt more like a 3.5 than her usual 5-star books. That being said, I cannot wait to see what she writes next.

I’d go down to 4,75 stars (wich I never do, it’s halfsies or nothing lol) because I’d love some minor details to be filled in but that’s me being ridicolously naggy because this was AMAZING. The fake dating trope is a wonderfull story about anxiety, growth & friendship. It’s a short book but the tropes are well developed and it’s a light read overall while still touching some heavier subjects. Exactly what I enjoy in Shore’s stories! She has 100% become an auto read/buy author for me and I normally don’t care to much for romance so this MEANS something. This is definitely one of my favorite books I read this year.

When Kate crushes the well-known Lucas Hunt in the library, her life will change forever. So the story of their failed fake dating trope is definitely one everyone will enjoy. I had hoped to see more depth to the characters but I loved it either way. Lucas was so sweet and seeing him realise how much he liked Kate throughout this story was a favourite. The flowers, even though a "simple" gesture is something so thoughtful, and I will not be getting over them anytime soon.

This isn't a spicy read, but a nice story to help get you out of a book slump.

The fake dating trope is a teen romantic comedy about a bookworm and a baseball player who start a fake relationship, but things might not be as easy as they think.

One of my favorite clichés or tropes is the fake relationship, so obviously I couldn't miss this book. What I did not expect was to enjoy it as I did.

The book stars Kate, a girl who only thinks about her books and saving to go to college, and Lucas, a charming baseball player. Their paths cross overnight when they accidentally bump into each other at school and he ends up offering to fix her car if she helps him by pretending to be his girlfriend.

I finished this novel in a few days, I spent it glued to the ebook laughing and falling in love with Lucas. The author's pen is fresh and light, so much so that I didn't even feel like she was reading.

I loved the Lucas and Kate's dynamic. Kate is an inveterate reader and somewhat lonely and Lucas is the complete opposite. I loved seeing how they got to know each other little by little and learning to live together beyond the fake couple, Lucas making her feel comfortable in his environment and Kate opening up to receive help. There was a representation of anxiety that I thought was very important, not only because of Kate's development, but also because I think she should be seen more in YA books.

If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend it because it is priceless.

⚠️ TW: Anxiety.

such a cute and quick read

This was an adorable story between Lucas and Kate. It had me smiling through the whole book. There were no major plot twists and i think as i was reading it I was waiting for the other shoe to drop. And it didn’t so I was pleasantly surprised. I gave it 4 stars cuz i just wanted to know more about certain characters. This was a well written story and I highly recommend

Adorable

Such an incredibly sweet read. I really enjoyed how the author mentioned tropes so often, I liked the MC's relationship, how well they fit together against all odds.
Thus author knows how yo write characters you'll root for, stories you want to see to completion and a book that you'll happily recommend to friends.
